BUTLER, SAMUEL.
Hamburg und Leipzig (d.i. Zürich, Orell, Gessner u. Füssli) 1765 - Gr-8°. XIX, (1), 528 S., (1) Bl. Druckfehler. [Click Below for Full Description]

CAVALLI, Atanagio
Venturi, Settecento riformatore, p.355-85. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Official publication for the second edition was in the second week of November. The variations between the two are in the matter of the imprint variations in the first two volumes, the pagination of Johnson's Preface in the first volume, corrections of cancels, variations in press and signature marks, and the half-titles that appear in this edition. Parts of four volumes of the second edition were reprinted, and most, if not all, sets include a mix of the two printings. Courtney & Smith do not make a distinction between the two editions, identifying the 1768 edition as the Second. The best and most substantial of Johnson's editorial undertakings. Jean Baptiste Basseville - Charles-Nicolas d' Eslon
[Paris] : Quillau, 1765. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

[Bach, Johann Sebastian]. - Doles, Johann Friedrich, composer and Cantor at St. Thomas (1715-1797).
Oblong folio (340 x 202 mm). 272 written pages with a total of 252 numbered chorales (and 4 pages of empty pen-staves). Contemporary half calf over mottled boards with manuscript title label to upper cover. All edges sprinkled in red. Highly interesting collection of Bach chorales, very likely assembled from 1765 onwards at St. Thomas School, Leipzig under the direction of Johann Friedrich Doles, the student of and successor to Johann Sebastian Bach, who sought to make his master's works more widely known. According to an expert opinion included with the volume (ca. 1940), the late head of the Peters Music Library, Kurt Taut (1888-1939), had surmised that the book was "written in Doles's own hand". This assumption is sustained by the apparently autograph entry "di Doles" at the beginning of the Doles chorales which entirely resembles the writing of the remainder of the manuscript. - The volume comprises a total of 252 chorales in a clean, contemporary copy by a single hand, numbered in red ink and (by a later editor) in pencil. Numbers 1 through 200 broadly agree with the two-part printed edition of Bach's chorales issued by Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach (Berlin/Leipzig 1765 & 1769), while numbers 231-251 represent the melodies for Gellert's "Geistliche Oden und Lieder" which Doles published in 1758, but in a revised order. As far as they could be identified, the final piece as well as the thirty pieces between the (real or ascribed) Bach music and Doles's settings consist of works by various composers of the 16th through 18th centuries, including Doles. - Provenance: In 1882 t … [Click Below for Full Description]

STERNE, Lawrence
R. and J. Dopdsley, 1765. With all half-titles present and engraved frontispieces by Hogarth in Volumes I and III. Contemporary calf, uniformly bound in superb unrestored condition throughout. From the library of Edward Ricketts with his armorial bookplate and an annotation noting that this Edward Ricketts came to Virginia in 1642. First edition, first state of Volumes III-IX, Volumes I and II in second edition. Volumes V, VII, and IX are signed by Sterne. Our copy is complete and compares with Rothschild, Volume II, 1970. Sterne (1713-1768), an English author born in Ireland, is considered one of the major novelists of the eighteenth century. This work quickly made him a celebrity. He led a dissolute life and was plagued by ill health. Tristan Shandy is a parody of a novel, a hodgepodge of character sketches, blank pages, dramatic action, and transposed chapters. It is witty, satiric, sentimental, knowledgeable and obscene. It was denounced on moral and literary grounds by Johnson, Walpole, and others, and it has come to be seen as one of the greatest comic novels in English, as well as a forerunner for many modern narrative devices.

Voltaire, Francois Marie Arouet de
Geneva: Cramer, 1765-1768. Five volumes. A GORGEOUS COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION (with ALL HALF-TITLES PRESENT) of one of Voltaire's most important and fascinating works, a haphazard collection of philosophical and literary pieces which clearly demonstrate the depth and scope of his genius. The original intention was to publish only three volumes, and for that reason many bibliographers consider the first three volumes a complete work in itself, although Voltaire continued until the 19th volume appeared in 1776. I offer here the first three volumes along with the next two. In his introduction to the third part, Voltaire points out that some of the works which appear here had been published before, but only incorrectly and incompletely. He goes on to assert that many of the other works originally printed alongside them, and attached to his name, were not in fact by him. His reason for publishing this collection, therefore, was to present a definitive and complete text of many of his most important works, many of which are printed here for the first time. Included are his commentary on Beccaria, his Traite sur la tolerance (with documentation that had not previously been published), and dozens of other pieces. Volume 3 is complete with the supplement, which is often missing. Due to their subversive nature (they all ended up on the Catholic Church's Index of Prohibited Books), these books were published without the name of the author, the name of the publisher, or the place of publication. Due to their popularity, they were reprinted by Cramer and mercilessly pirated by other pub … [Click Below for Full Description]

A Paris : Chez P.G. Simon.
