A manifesto on legal reform, and one of the best interpretations of the ideas circulating around France in the second half of the eighteenth century. The central theme of the work is the reform of criminal justice, in a context in which punishment was still both brutal and arbitrary. Beccaria advocates an egalitarian justice system, and traces a new metric for punishment and laws rooted … [Klicken Sie unten für eine ausführliche Beschreibung]

Thomas Hutchinson
Thomas and John Fleet, Boston, MA, 1764. FIRST EDITION. [6], iv, 566 pp. Hardcover in contemporary cloth with red leather spine and gilt title label on spine. Age toning and minor foxing throughout the text. "Hutchinson did not seek his role as an ally of the Crown. Rather, he was a vigorous and conventional defender of Massachusetts interests. He opposed, for example, the impressment of Massachusetts inhabitants by British naval vessels. In 1742 he confronted Captain William Scott on the deck of H.M.S. Astraea and demanded the release of one seaman and the hostage wife of a man Scott was attempting to impress. Hutchinson persuaded Shirley to intervene in their behalf. In 1747 Speaker Hutchinson mediated between a violent anti-impressment mob and the provincial government; the Massachusetts House approved such a strong anti-impressment resolution that the mob dispersed. Hutchinson's History of Massachusetts-Bay accurately recounted these events and contained sympathetic accounts of Puritanism; the Antinomian heresy of Hutchinson's ancestor, Anne Hutchinson; and Massachusetts opposition in the 1680s to the "tyrannical disposition" of the royalist governor, Sir Edmund Andros, and his administration's "harpies." Hutchinson's History acknowledged the multiplicity of jostling interest groups in Massachusetts and the duty of government to protect the public interest from the demands of self-interested groups like the advocates of an inflated money supply he had battled in the 1740s. Though Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790) got credit for the Albany Plan of colonial union in 1754, Hut … [Klicken Sie unten für eine ausführliche Beschreibung]

The results were published as two separate works, but they are almost always bound together, as in this copy. Despite the title only mentioning birds, amphibia and fish, the Museum Frederici contains all the major vertebrate classes. In both parts many new species, from all over the world, were introduced. A fine copy in a modest contemporary binding; preliminary leaves a bit browned in the margins, all the text pages clean, Rare, especially in such good condition. printed for A. Millar, 1764. First edition, 4to, pp. vii, [1], 252, [4]; 23 folding engraved plates; bound with: A Supplement to Mr. Ferguson's Book of Lectures ... containing thirteen copper-plates, with descriptions, of the machinery which he has added to his apparatus, since that book was printed, London, A. Millar, 1767, pp. 40; 13 folding engraved plates; contemporary full calf, red morocco label on gilt-decorated spine; joints cracked, corners worn and peeling, boards scuffed; externally good; internally about fine. Ferguson (1710-1776) was "almost totally self-taught. [He] became fascinated with mechanics as a small child when he observed his father using a lever. A talented artist, for many years he earned his living as a portraitist. In later years he was able to devote himself to science, delivering popular lectures on science, and designing instruments. He invented eight orreries, a tide-dial, a 'whirling table' for displaying the mode of central forces, the 'mechanical paradox' and various kinds of astronomical clocks, stellar and lunar rotulas, as well as his 'seasons illustrator' and the 'eclipsareon' of which he was very proud..." (Roberts & Trent, Bibliotheca Mechinaca, p. 114-5). "His models of the planetary system were classics of engineering design whose accuracy far surpassed anything previously available" (DSB). Charles Nicolas COCHIN
Etching with engravings, signed and dated at lower center. A good impression, printed on contemporary laid paper, with margins, some expert repairs at the back, otherwise in good condition. This plate is engraved by Cochin & Jacques Philippe Le Bas, after a painting by Joseph Vernet. Vernet was commissioned by Louis XV in 1753 to paint fifteen views of the main ports of France, and given the exceptional title of "peintre des marines de sa majesté". He spent twelve years travelling around the Mediterranean, Atlantic and Channel coasts with his family and servants in tow. The country was at war with England at the time, and Loui … [Klicken Sie unten für eine ausführliche Beschreibung]

Item #1225803 The rare second edition of this important political work. Darcy (1598-1668) was a leading 17th century Irish politician who fought for Irish rights against the British crown. This work contains his famous Argument, a dramatic speech he gave to members of the Irish House of Commons. Darcy's argument is a detailed political rationale for the rights of the Irish Parliament and why Ireland should be governed under the Rule of Law as a British colony. In many ways, it anticipated the arguments of the Founding Fathers of America a century later. This work was first published in 1643 and reprinted in 1764. Both editions are today rare.
