BUCOP also records the set at Birmingham Public Lib. Not in Union List. Not in OCLC. * Our set has been collated with great care. It runs from 10 May 1764 to 7 November 1765 (as is correct) and appears to lack a total of only 5 leaves (2 leaves from vol.I no.18, a further 2 from vol.I no.25 and the final leaf of vol.II no.15). These few faults, however, suggest that this set may be closer to completeness than any other set now extant. The Birmingham Register> was a biweekly periodical running in all to some 40 issues during its publication life. It includes essays, anecdotes, selections reprinted from other journals such as The Monitor> and the continuation of the North Briton>; with a Historical Memoir> in each issue including domestic and foreign news, prices of stocks, bankrupts; and with poetry selections.

[Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

ORDONNANCE CONCERNANT LES FONCTIONS DE LA MARÉCHAUSSÉE [caption title]

Martinique: Pierre Richard, 1764.. 8pp. Small quarto. Folded sheets. Lightly creased. Near fine. Incredibly early and unrecorded imprint from the island of Martinique, regarding the establishment of a constabulary in Guadeloupe. Passed by the Governor of Guadeloupe (François-Charles de Bourlamaque, who remained in office one year, due to sudden death) and the Intendant (Louis Thomassin Peinier), this ordinance regulates the establishment of a constabulary company in Guadeloupe. Among the thirteen articles, several concern the arrest of fugitive slaves. No copies in the Catalogue Collectif de France or in OCLC. The first recorded printing on the island is by Bradford Swan in 1784, but we have handled one other imprint from 1764 and several from later in the 1760's, and have seen in commerce an imprint from as early as 1762. This is, therefore, among the earliest Caribbean imprints this firm has handled. As with virtually everything to do with early Caribbean imprints, the story of printing on Martinique remains shrouded in mystery. Rare, and perhaps a unique survival.

[85] pp., including engraved allegorical frontispiece, engraved portrait of Lodovico Manin on verso of title-page. Each page within elaborate engraved border, embellished with allegorical figures, engraved head- and tailpieces, allegorical printer's device at end. Folio, 375 x 265 mm bound in contemporary Venetian brocatto paper wrappers. Venice: Nella Stamperia Albrizzi, 1764. |~||~||~||~||~| First Edition of the apogee of eighteenth-century Venetian commemorative books. "This beautiful publication was presented to Lodovico Manin on the occasion of his taking of office as procurator of St. Marco Basilica in 1764. Lodovico Manin (1726-1802) was the last Doge of the Venetian Republic. Deposed by the French under Napoleon in 1797, the Republic ceased to exist and was ceded to Austria. This ended the unbroken succession of 120 Doges, from the first, Paoluccio Anafesto in 697, and it marked the end of the 1000-year-old Serenissima, the Most Serene Republic of Venice, the longest-surviving continuous republic in western history. "Perhaps most striking of all, the Manin family from the Friuli were untiring in the decoration of palaces, country houses and churches in and around Venice, and they thus won a reputation for nobility of soul through the expenditure of money which was to lead eventually to the election of the futile Lodovico as the last of the Doges" (Haskell, Francis, Patrons and Painters, New Haven: Yale University Press, 1980, p. 251). The Componimenti poetici "contains poems in Manin's honor by members of contemporary Venetian high society. The charming unsigned engravings by Francesco Bartolozzi which adorn the book make it an outstanding example of Venetian graphic art in its final perfection. Bartolozzi designed and engraved expressly for this edition the majority of the Rococo decorative borders, the vignettes, the portraits, and frontispiece" (Robison, Library of Congress, Quarterly Journal, May 1948, v. 5, p. 51). Bartolozzi departed for London in the same year, thus it is likely the Manin Componimenti was his final (and grandest) commission executed in the High-Baroque style for a Venetian ceremonial book. Altogether the work contains an engraved title comprised of a baroque cartouche frame with the Manin coat-of-arms, a portrait of Manin, 16 head- and tailpieces, 40 ornate borders surrounding the text (one repeated), and a full-page engraved publisher's mark. "Together with the Ingresso for Gian Francesco Pisani (1763), this book stands as the ideal synthesis of Bartolozzi's extraordinary technical and stylistic virtuosity in book decoration" (Glory of Venice, no. 245). A fine copy, wrappers rebacked, front blank leaf a little spotted and repaired. Morazzoni 272 (illustrated in plates #38-51). Lapiccirella 56. Soranzo 291. Not in Hollis.

Divers Habillements des Femmes de Moscovie

Complete suite of six numbered engravings on three sheets, signed "Le Prince 1764." Tipped-on and mounted on heavier paper, in window mats. Moscow, [1764]. WITH: ____________. Complete set of six numbered engraved plates on three sheets, signed "Le Prince 1768." Tipped-on and mounted on heavier paper, in window mats. Preserved in folding box of green paper over boards. Moscow: [1768].Early issue of two suites from Le Prince's celebrated album of Russian Cries and Costume, which "constitute an important part of the pictorial record of the time" (Beall p. 485). Le Prince's Russian etchings became hugely popular and have been justly praised for their documentary as well as their artistic and aesthetic value. Jean-Baptiste Le Prince (1734-1781) painter; draftsman and etcher, was the most famous student of François Boucher. Not only did Le Prince assume Boucher's controlled painting style, but he also adopted his master's penchant for rustic settings with shepherds and shepherdesses.During 1750s Le Prince traveled extensively throughout Russia, filling sketchbooks with studies of the Russian people, with special emphasis on local customs and costumes. He returned to Paris in 1763 and began painting pictures and printing etchings of the Russian countryside and daily life. In 1765 the French Académie Royale exhibited fifteen paintings by Le Prince, all scenes of Russia. It has been noted that the artist used Russian costumes brought back to France from his travels and even small mannequins to create accurate rendering of dress and local type. "Le Prince's graphic art of Russia and its peoples is significant in that he based his compositions entirely upon his own designs, lending a much more realistic portrayal to his views than other eighteenth-century contemporaries. He is also credited with being the first artist (in 1768) to introduce aquatint into his etched and engraved plates. He may even have been the inventor of aquatint" (J. Paul Getty Museum online). A few light spots, else very fine. Not in Lipperheide. Colas 1841 & 1847. Ray, French I, 75-6. Cohen-Ricci 626.

Les Figures des Plantes et Animaux

Five volumes. With 3 engraved title-pages, 6 leaves of 'Avertissement' and 'Nota,' 729 engraved plates by Defehrt, Prevost, Duflos, and Martinet after original designs by Garsault, 20 pp. Index. 8vo., 218 x 143 mm, bound in contemporary marbled French calf, tan morocco title-labels on spines, marbled edges and endpapers. Paris: The Author, [1764]. |~||~||~||~||~| First Edition, First Issue. The work is celebrated on account of the 729 superbly engraved natural history plates, almost all of which were drawn from nature by Garsault (1693-1778); there are accurate depictions of plants and animals of every variety, including tobacco ("Nicotiana Major latifolia," plate 407; "Nicotiana Major angustifolia," plate 408; and "Nicotiana Minor," plate 409), flowers, fruits, insects, mammals, birds, and finally (on plate 729) Man and Woman. This work is highly unusual in that it was issued not only for the use of medical doctors but also for artists. As Brunet relates, this work first appeared in 1764 exactly as here, without descriptive text, under the above title (Les Figures des plantes et animaux d'usage en médicine). A text volume was published separately in the following year under the title "Explication abregée de 719 plantes" etc. (Paris, 1765); the plates and text volume were re-printed by Didot le Jeune in 1767 as: Description, vertus et usages de 719 plantes...et 134 animaux, en 730 planches gravées en taille-douce.         Caryophyllus, General Clayton

Nuremberg 1764 - The “Hortus Nitidissimis Omnem Per Annum Superbiens Floribus Sive Amoenissimorum Florum Imagines” was published between 1750 and 1786 as a periodical intended, when collected, to form an unmatched collection of botanical prints. The engravings are based on the drawings collected from various artists by the famous Nuremberg physician and amateur botanist Christopher Jacob Trew. Although the plates were produced using engraving techniques common to the period, each plate was completed individually through hand coloring. The variations in plates between different known volumes indicates that more than one artist was involved in this process. These variations render every volume of the work unique. Trew’s good friend Georg Dionysius Ehret, considered the most important and influential botanical artist of the mid-18th century, was a chief artist of this endeavor. Ehret was born to farmers in Heidelberg, Germany in 1708, and showed an early propensity for drawing. As a young man he was employed primarily as a gardener and he used his time spent gardening to examine and practice drawing botanicals and the natural world around him. Eventually his art attracted the attention of Dr. Trew who gave Ehret financial patronage and with whom he worked on the Hortus Nitidissimis as well as Plantae Selectae. These botanical engravings are considered the finest records of cultivated flowers of the time and are noted as being precisely engraved and exquisitely colored. This hand colored engraving, Caryophyllus, 20” x 14”, is in excellent condition with a slight stain on the top right edge. Caryophyllus is a type of herbaceous perennial plant commonly called the carnation. This engraving of the blooming flower is expertly colored and highlighted in crimson gray and white. The delicate stem is also detailed and dynamically colored.

An Accurate map of Buckingham Shire, divided into its Hundreds

London: , c 1764. Mounted size: 885 × 705 mm. Copperplate engraving with original hand colour. Slight creasing to the central fold, otherwise in very good condition. A wonderfully precise, detailed and informative large map of Buckinghamshire; from 'The Large English Atlas' ; arguably the finest English atlas produced in the eighteenth century. Emanuel Bowen and Thomas Kitchin were prolific and highly respected cartographers, however, this collaboration was not without its difficulties; ownership of the particular project changed many times, therefore the maps are found to have various imprints. This map carries the imprint of Robert Sayer, John Bowles and Carrington Bowles. In addition to being on a grand scale, the maps carry a wealth of valuable county information concerning the Seats of the Nobility, geographical and political information, and major market towns and cities.
