[3 parts].

[Nuremberg], Christian de Launoy seel. Erben, 1764 [recte: 1763-66]. Folio. Contemporary half calf with gilt lines to spine. Corners a bit bumped. In magnificent, completely clean and fresh condition. (6), 8, (4), 72, 40, (8), 26 ff. + 51 magnificent engraved plates - all plates in astonishing, contemporary hand-colouring. Plates numbered as thus: 1-5 + 2b (i.e. 6 plates - depiting the microscope), I-XXX + A-E (i.e. 35 - details of floral structure and pollens), Anhang 1-10 (i.e. 10 - mainly insects). The plates are engraved by (and coloured by/under the auspices of) Christoph Keller after drawings by Gleichen-Russworm. With several beautiful, large engraved vignettes (by Johann Michael Stock, efter Keller).. The scarce first edition of this splendid work, in which the outstanding microscopist Baron Gleichen-Russworm recorded his observations of plants and insects. The 51 astonishingly beautiful hand-coloured copperplates show the morphology of plants and insects in great detail as well as his magnificent specially constructed microscope and its different parts, making it of the utmost importance to the history of the microscope as well as the fertilization processes in plants. With his thorough study of the pollen, stamens, and pistils as well as the process connected with them, magnificently presented in great detail on beautifully produced plates, the work became a great source of inspiration for many biologists and microscopists of the 18th century. The microscope described and depicted here was frequently reproduced from the detailed plates and Gleichen-Russworm's experiments widely repeated in order to investigate the true nature of the plant. The plates depicting the microscope are among the most frequently reproduced depictions of microscopes. The work appeared in three fascicles, between 1763 and 1766 and were issued with a title-page stating 1764. Wilhelm Friedrich von Gleichen, known as Russworm (1717 - 1783) belongs to the outstanding microscopists of the eighteenth century. He was the elder son of Heinrich von Gleichen and Caroline von Russworm. "He received little formal education and in 1734, after some years as a page at the court of Prince Thurn und Taxis in Frankfurt, he decided to make his career in the forces of the margrave of Bayreuth. [...]. Gleichen-Russworm remained in the army until 1756, when he resigned his commission in order to devote himself to the management of the Greifenstein estates, inherited from his mother in 1748. His first published writings appeared after his departure from Bayreuth, in the periodical "Fränkische Sammlung aus der Naturlehre, Arzneigelahrtheit, Ökonomie und der damit verbundenen Wissenschaften"; they deal, inter alia, with natural history, physics, and chemistry but are, for the most part, quite fanciful.[...] In the summer of 1760 Gleichen-Russworm made the acquaintance of Martin Ledermüller, who had already begun publication of his "Mikroskopische Gemüths- und Augenergötzungen" (1759-1762); it was this work which led Gleichen-Russworm to concentrate on microscopy. Ledermüller visited Schloss Greifenstein in 1762, and Gleichen-Russworm continued to benefit from his advice until the former took offense at certain criticisms of his work which appeared in "Geschichte der gemeinen Stubenfliege" (1764).Gleichen-Russworm was particularly interested in the processes of fertilization in plants and animals, and in 1763 he published the first fascicle of Das neueste aus dem Reiche der Pflanzen. This work contains fifty-one colored plates illustrating numerous details of floral structure and various pollens; in addition, his interest in the construction of the microscope is reflected in the six plates devoted to the different modifications and accessories which he designed for the instrument. His account of the pollen of Asclepias syriaca L. in Auserlesene mikroskopische Entdeckungen (1777-1781) contains what appears to be the first observation of a pollen tube, although he remained unaware of its significance." (D.S.B.). Nissen BBI: 716. Pritzel: 3367 (merely stating 46 plates). Honeyman: 1515. Wellcome: III:125 (merely having an incomplete copy of the French translation)

        DEI DELITTI E DELLE PENE.

In-24 gr.

Soulsby Catalogue of the works of Linnæus 1095a. &c. &c. in quo animalia rariora imprimis & exotica: aves, amphibia, pisces describuntur. Tomi secundi prodrumus."

The Residual Analysis; A New Branch of the Algebraic Art, Of very extensive Use, both in Pure Mathematics, and Natural Philosophy. Book I [all published]

London: Printed for the Author; and sold by L. Hawes…[et al.], 1764 First edition. Recent tan calf over marbled boards, Gilt-ruled spine with crimson morocco label. . Quarto. Five engraved folding plates. With list of subscribers. A little light foxing. A very good copy of a scarce book. John Landen (1719-1790) was the most notable British mathematician in the second half of the eighteenth century. At the time when British mathematics was held back by inadequate notation, an unfortunate consequence of the Newton-Leibniz dispute, he was the only Englishman to score major advances in mathematics and in the art of computation. In this, his most important work, he attempted to replace the fluxional calculus with an analytic method "founded entirely on the anciently received principles of algebra." A second volume was planned, but it never appeared. According to Lacroix, this was the first attempt to reduce the infinitesimal calculus to "purely mathematical notions" (Oxford DNB). Landen's writings served as the starting point for investigations by Euler, Lagrange, and Legendre. He also developed the theorem known by his name for expressing the length of a hyperbolic arc in terms of the lengths of arcs in two ellipses.

ANNO QUARTO GEORGII III. REGIS. AN ACT FOR PREVENTING TUMULTS AND RIOTOUS ASSEMBLIES, AND FOR THE MORE SPEEDY AND EFFECTUAL PUNISHING THE RIOTERS

[Philadelphia: Benjamin Franklin and David Hall, 1764].. 4pp., printed on a single folded sheet. Folio. Three horizontal folds. A bit of wrinkling at the edges. Very good. Untrimmed. In a half morocco and folding case, spine gilt. A rare and important colonial law, passed by the Pennsylvania Assembly and issued under the name of King George III, and Governor John Penn. The law, passed on February 3, 1764, was enacted specifically to address the crisis caused by the actions of the "Paxton Boys," frontier Pennsylvanians who were engaged in a murderous spree against Indians. In December 1763, presumably seeking vengeance for Indian attacks on frontier towns and frustrated by the Pennsylvania government's inability to protect its frontier citizens, a mob of men from Paxton and adjacent areas slaughtered twenty peaceful Conestoga Indians, including fourteen that had been given refuge in a Lancaster workhouse. The infamous "Paxton Boys", numbering more than five hundred, then marched to Philadelphia where, by the presence of the militia and the intercession of Benjamin Franklin and other emissaries, they were thwarted in their aim to kill more Indians. "At the urging of Governor John Penn the Assembly passed this act in the compass of one day in order to deal with the Paxton Boys intent on marching from Lancaster to Philadelphia and killing the Indians lodged for safety on Province Island. The act extended to Pennsylvania for a brief time the terms of the British Riot Act of 1715" - Miller. The act notes that recently "several dangerous Riots and Tumults have been...continued and fomented by many turbulent and evil-minded Persons." It proclaims that any group of twelve or more men, "being unlawfully, riotously and tumultuously assembled together," may be ordered by the authorities to disperse, and that if they do not disperse they may be arrested, and if found guilty "shall suffer Death, as in Case of Felony, without Benefit of Clergy." The law was to be in effect for one year from the date of its passage, and then until the end of the next sitting of the Assembly. Miller notes that Franklin's partner, David Hall, charged the colonial government £5 for printing copies of this "Riot Act" on February 4, 1764, the day after the act was passed. Miller and ESTC together locate only two copies, at the American Philosophical Society and the Historical Society of Pennsylvania. The ESTC listing of the University of Aberdeen library appears to be in error. A rare and important colonial American law for dealing with rioters, printed by Benjamin Franklin. MILLER 816.         THE HISTORY OF THE COLONY OF MASSACHUSETS- BAY, FROM THE FIRST SETTLEMENT THEREOF IN 1628. UNTIL ITS INCORPORATION WITH THE COLONY OF PLYMOUTH, PROVINCE OF MAIN, &c. BY THE CHARTER OF KING WILLIAM AND QUEEN MARY IN 1691

Boston: Thomas & John Fleet, 1764.. [4],iv,566pp. Contemporary calf, gilt leather label. Extremities worn, binding rubbed. Hinges cracking but still firm. Contemporary ownership inscription on titlepage. Light foxing and dampstaining. A very good copy. The first edition of this classic Massachusetts history, published in two separate volumes; the second volume was published in 1767, under the title THE HISTORY OF THE PROVINCE OF MASSACHUSETS-BAY. "Hutchinson's HISTORY OF MASSACHUSETTS-BAY accurately recounted these events and contained sympathetic accounts of Puritanism; the Antinomian heresy of Hutchinson's ancestor, Anne Hutchinson; and Massachusetts opposition in the 1680s to the 'tyrannical disposition' of the royalist governor, Sir Edmund Andros, and his administration's 'harpies.' Hutchinson's HISTORY acknowledged the multiplicity of jostling interest groups in Massachusetts and the duty of government to protect the public interest from the demands of self- interested groups" - ANB. Hutchinson (1711-1780), besides being a colonial historian, was governor of Massachusetts from 1771 to 1773, and was a staunch Loyalist. He left Boston for London in late 1773, after he had helped cause the Boston Tea Party, and remained in Exile in England until his death in 1780. The first two volumes of Hutchinson's work on the Massachusetts colony are complete unto themselves; the third volume was published posthumously. This first volume is relatively scarce on the market.         Delsboa illustrata, eller Delsbo socken i norra Helsingland, i sådan måtto ljusliga beskrefwen, at de förelagde fyra och fyratio frågor, dem framledne högwördige dom-probsten i Wäxiö, herr doctor Sven Bælter, då han år 1736 ännu war philosophiæ candidat, åstundade få swar uppå, här warda beswarade, såsom de äfwen samma året straxt beswarades.

Sthlm, Nyström och Stolpes förlag, 1764. 8:o. (14),256,(2) s.

Jacques Nicolas Bellin Paris: Jacques Nicolas Bellin, 1764. unbound. very good(+). Map. Uncolored engraving. Image measures 21 7/8" x 34 7/8". Fantastic early map of New York City. Details the fortress and city walls, streets and lots. A numbered key corresponds to notable buildings such as the governor's house and the armory. Based on a manuscript map by J.B.L. Franquelin of 1693, created during the French and Indian War. The focus on military function and details evokes the threat of attack by the French on the English, and is thought to have been reported by a spy (possibly John Reaux). Bellin reproduced the map 70 years later, although it was an outdated depiction of the city. Newer sources were simply unavailable. See Augustyn and Cohen, 50. Small chip to lower right, very light staining to margins. Jacques Nicolas Bellin (1703-1772), was the official hydrographer to the French king and the first person to hold the title of "Ingénieur de la Marine of the Depot des cartes et plans de la Marine" (chief engineer of the French Hydrographical Office).

Collection of 138 arrests and memoires, of which 76 concern Louis Dominique Bourguignon, called Cartouche

1676-1764. No Dust Jacket. Crime and Punishment during the Ancien Regime [Cartouche, Louis Dominique Bourguignon (1693-1721).] Collection of 76 official court records relating to the arrests, trials, sentences and executions of Cartouche and members of his criminal gang. Various places and publishers, 1721-22. With: 62 documents, including official arrest and sentencing records, relating to crimes committed in France in the 17th and 18th centuries. Various places and publishers, 1676, 1716 and 1727-64. 138 documents in total. Various sizes (mostly 4to). 247 x 177 mm. Bound together in one volume, 18th cent. mottled calf, gilt spine, leather label, light wear. Minor foxing, a few leaves repaired, but overall fine. Manuscript notations on a few leaves. Manuscript label reading "Ex libris C. T. Noel du Payrat" on front pastedown, referring either to French jurist Pierre Theodore No? du Payrat (1761-1832) or a member of his family; see below. An extraordinary collection of 17th and 18th century French legal documents and other papers on specific crimes committed in France during this period. Over half the documents relate to the arrests, trials and punishments of Louis Dominique Bourguignon, called Cartouche, and his notorious "Cours des Miracles" gang of criminals. One of France's most famous outlaws, Cartouche has been portrayed (and romanticized) in countless stories, plays, songs and films, including the 1962 film "Cartouche," starring Jean-Paul Belmondo and Claudia Cardinale. His crimes and those of his followers are exhaustively detailed in this collection, which consists chiefly of documents issued by the Cour de Parlement de Paris, the ancien regime's primary legislative and judicial body. Cartouche was the son of a wine merchant. After expulsion from school, he became the head of a gang in Normandy, then served for a time as a police informant before joining the army. Upon leaving the army, Cartouche and some of his fellow soldiers formed a new criminal gang, headquartered in the Cours des Miracles, a notorious Parisian slum. The Cours des Miracles gang, which appears to have had over one hundred members (both male and female), was an early example of organized crime in France: Cartouche had himself elected leader, and punished challenges to his authority with death. Members of Cartouche's gang terrorized the city with almost daily robberies and murders; they were especially feared for their attacks on carriages traveling from Versailles to Paris. Betrayed by one of his accomplices, Cartouche was arrested on January 6, 1721 and thrown into prison. Believing that his gang would rescue him, he at first refused to divulge any information to the authorities, even when subjected to the question extraordinaire, a particularly brutal form of judicial torture. Cartouche was scheduled to be executed on November 27, 1721, and hoped for rescue up until the last minute; however, when he finally realized his gang had broken faith with him, he begged the officiating priest for a reprieve so that he, in turn, could betray his former associates. On November 28, after making his confession, Cartouche was broken on the wheel (rompu vif), the standard execution for robbers and brigands in 18th-century France. Document no. 6 in our collection, dated November 26, 1721, records the death sentence given to Cartouche and seven of his associates by the Cour de Parlement de Paris. After Cartouche's execution, most of the remaining Cours des Miracles gang members were arrested and tried for their crimes, which included murder, armed robbery, breaking and entering, stealing from churches and royal residences, receiving stolen goods, and harboring other criminals. These proceedings, which took place at the Cour de Parlement de Paris in the summer and fall of 1722, are recorded in documents 8-86 in our list (except for documents 12, 15, 62 & 85). The sentences included hanging, being burned alive, the wheel, branding, whipping, the stocks, banishment and the galleys. Of the remaining documents in this collection, the most interesting are a defense of the notorious Marquise de Brinvilliers (no. 1), executed in 1676 for poisoning her family; the arrest records of Robert-Francois Damiens (no. 130), drawn and quartered in 1757 for attempting to stab Louis XV, and of Damiens's family (no. 131), arrested and punished for their association with him; and a record of the judgment against the famous French smuggler and bandit Louis Mandrin (no. 122). The remaining documents record arrests and punishments for diverse crimes, including theft, pimping, infanticide, fraud, heresy, and refusing a dying person the last rites. This remarkable collection on crime may have been assembled by Pierre Theodore No?du Payrat, seigneur de Razat (1761-1832), jurist, King's counsel, acting procurer general of the Parlement of Paris, delegate from the Dordogne to the ?ats generaux in 1789, and member of the Council of Five Hundred. No?de Peyrat's descendants still maintain the Chateau de Razat and its important library of books on jurisprudence. A complete listing of the items in this collection can be on our website under the Rare Book tab.
