THE ORIGIN AND PROGRESS OF DESPOTISM: IN THE ORIENTAL, AND OTHER EMPIRES, OF AFRICA, EUROPE, AND AMERICA

Amsterdam [i.e., London], 1764. FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH . Hardcover. 184 x 117 mm (7 1/4 x 4 5/8"). 1 p.l. (title), 285 pp. (BB and BB2 bound in reverse order.) Translated by John Wilkes. FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH. Excellent contemporary crimson morocco, covers with gilt rule border, raised bands, spine gilt in compartments with floral spray centerpiece and foliate cornerpieces, green morocco label, gilt turn-ins, marbled endpapers. Sabin 6885; Minuti, Rolando. "Oriental Despotism." European History Online (EGO), published by the Leibniz Institute of European History (IEG), Mainz 2012-05-03. URL: http://www.ieg-ego.eu/minutir-2012-en. Joints and top of spine slightly rubbed (and carefully refurbished), occasional faint browning, half a dozen pages of text with rather light printing (but still entirely legible), one opening with offsetting from ribbon bookmark, but A VERY APPEALING COPY, the unsophisticated decorative binding bright and solid, with no serious wear, and the text fresh and clean throughout. This is a pretty copy of the first appearance in English of an Enlightenment-era examination of the roots of despotism, a work that denounces religion and theocracy as key elements in tyrannical rule. As stated on the title page and in the text, "this theologico-political [work] is calculated for an introduction and key to Montesquieu's 'Spirit of laws,'" a treatise primarily concerned with the separation of powers. However, Boulanger and Montesquieu disagreed on a key point. Montesquieu saw religion, specifically Islam, as the potential ally of a despot, but he considered it an overall stabilizing force in society. Boulanger, on the other hand, saw little or no redeeming social value in religious institutions, and strongly emphasized the link between religion and despotism. As Rolando Minuti observed in "Oriental Despotism," "Boulanger did not define religion as socially useful but as the anthropological source of a fundamental mystification that creates power. Its political consequence, reinforced by superstition and idolatry, would then be despotism." Boulanger (1722-59) was a road and bridge engineer with a keen interest in philosophy, particularly in the area of politics and human rights. He wrote several articles on the rights of man for Diderot's "Encyclopedia," and several books critical of religion, all of which were published posthumously. The first edition of the present work, in French, appeared in Geneva in 1761; English politician John Wilkes (1725-97) privately printed another French edition in London in 1763, and is believed to have prepared this translation. While one can find copies of the 1764 English edition, they almost never show up in pleasing contemporary bindings, as here.

Bon exemplaire. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

"It is the most complete and compact account of physiocratic views, for which the reader is referred to the article Physiocrats, and owed a good deal to Quesnay, by whom the whole of the seven chapter was written" (Palgrave, II, p. 777). Leiden,: Theodor Haak,, 1764.. [viii], 338, [ii], [ii, blank] pp. 8vo (13 x 21,5 c.). Contemporary marbled calf, spine with 5 raised bands; in compartments gilt decorated with floral motives (top of front joint slightly damaged; marbled end-papers, red edges. With several woodcut headers, footers and initials. BMN. I, 200.First edition, very rare. A considerably expanded edition of author's thesis (Leiden, 1762). Rouppe travelled much in the West-Indies as a naval physician for the Dutch West Indische Companie. The text is based on author's own observations and experiences, including sanitation and sanitary measures, venereal diseases, fevers, cancers etc. An important part (pp. 90-212) deals with scurvy. One of the last parts, "de morbus in portubus" is of particularly interest. This work is often considered the best 18th century treatise on naval medicine, and was translated into English and German. -- (Owing to the quality of the paper, text lightly browned as in all copies. Copy with the bookplate of G.J.B. Ducos).

        Ville de Manathe ou Nouvelle-Yorc

Jacques Nicolas Bellin, Paris 1764 - Fantastic early map of New York City. Details the fortress and city walls, streets and lots. A numbered key corresponds to notable buildings such as the governor's house and the armory. Based on a manuscript map by J.B.L. Franquelin of 1693, created during the French and Indian War. The focus on military function and details evokes the threat of attack by the French on the English, and is thought to have been reported by a spy (possibly John Reaux). Bellin reproduced the map 70 years later, although it was an outdated depiction of the city. Newer sources were simply unavailable. See Augustyn and Cohen, 50. Small chip to lower right, very light staining to margins. Jacques Nicolas Bellin (1703-1772), was the official hydrographer to the French king and the first person to hold the title of "Ingénieur de la Marine of the Depot des cartes et plans de la Marine" (chief engineer of the French Hydrographical Office). Map. Uncolored engraving. Image measures 21 7/8" x 34 7/8".

        Essays on Husbandry

London: Printed for W. Frederick in Bath, 1764. First edition. Original full calf, joints tender but sound, raised bands, red label, gilt lettering. Rubbed otherwise a very good clean copy of the first edition.. pp xviii, errata, Essay I: tp, 213[214] ; Essay II: 232. 5 plates, woodcuts in text. Walter Harte (1709-1774) was a friend to Alexander Pope, who approved of the book of poems that Harte published in 1727 when he was only 18 years old. He was a tutor to the Earl of Chesterfield's son and became Vice Principal of St. Mary's Hall Oxford and ,later, Canon of Windsor. His approach to agriculture although scholarly, is well rooted in the practice of his time. His "Essay on Lucerne" is of particular interest as, although it had been known since antiquity, the importance and success of lucerne as a fodder crop were just coming to light. Fussell II p. 37 calls this edition "Essays on Husbandry and Lucerne 1764" because Essay II is "An account of some Experiments tending to improve the Culture of Lucerne by transplantation: Being the First Experiments of the Kind hitherto made . . ." . Kress 6188& Perkins - see No.758 but he only describes the second edition. Kress No. 6188.

A Paris, Chez Guillyn..., 1764. FIRST EDITION. 2 volumes. 4to, 272 x 185 mms., pp. [ii], xvi, 691 [692 blank]; [ii], 710, [2], xxiv, 34 [35 - 36 Approbation], 29 folding tables, early reback in quarter sheepskin, morocco labels, marbled boards (rubbed), uncut; some soiling of edges, but generally a good to very good copy, with the armorial bookplate of Henry N. Sealy on the front paste-down end-paper of each vlume and is autograph on the upper margin of the title-page of each volume. Sealy was the author of A Treatise on Coins, Currency, and Banking: With Observations on the Bank act of 1844 and on the Reports of the Committees of the House of Lords and of the House of Commons on the Bank Acts (1858), so this seems to be a useful book for him to have had in his library. Abot de Bazinghen (1711 - 1791) discusses the history of coins and coinage from its beginnings up to the first quarter of the 18th century. The emphasis is, of course, upon French coins, but he also gives some account in Asia and Africa. Germain Garnier, in his edition of the Wealth of Nations, vol. v., p. 234, says the book "n'est guère qu'une compilation faite sans soin et sans discernment," and explains that the mint price remained in force a very short time. It having failed to bring bullion to the mint, much higher prices were successively offered, and when the Wealth of Nations was published the seignorage only amounted to about 3 per cent. On the silver coin it was then about 2 per cent., in place of the 6 per cent. stated by Bazinghen, p. 590. Graesse 315, Kress Lib 5161, Goldsmith Lib. 9994.

A New and Literal Translation of all the Books of the Old and New Testament; with Notes, Critical and Explanatory

London: Printed by W. Richardson and S. Clark: and Sold by William Johnston..., 1764. FIRST AND ONLY EDITION. 2 volumes. Folio, 347 x 220 mms., pp. [ii], xxxviii, 745 [746 blank]; [ii], 334, viii, 339 [340 blank], contemporary calf, rebacked in slightly lighter calf, gilt spine, black morocco labels. A very good copy with a rather good provenance: "Doctor Fothergill/ To his Niece S T/ now S. Hird" on the upper margin of the recto of the front free end-paper in volume 1, the autograph of said niece, "Sarah Hird," on the upper margin of the recto of the front free end-paper in volume 2, and the bookplate of Joseph Crosfield on the front paste-down end-paper of each volume. The Quaker minister Samuel Fothergill (1715 - 1772) was one of the most prominent Friends of his generation, and he spent two years, 1754 - 1756, in the American colonies, travelling almost 9000 miles to attend Friends' meetings, strengthening their Quaker principles. Before that, he became interested in Purver's translation and encouraged in 1746 its publication in parts. This was undertaken by the Bristol printer Felix Farley, but the project was more-or-less stillborn. Nevertheless, Fothergill encouraged Purver to persevere, and when Purver completed the work in 1763, he paid Purver £1000 for the copyright and published it at his own expense. His niece, Sarah, was the daughter of one of his siblings. Joseph Crosfield, whose bookplate appears on the paste-down end-papers was the brother of George Crosfield (1785 - 1847), who compiled Memoirs of the Life and Gospel Labours of Samuel Fothergill (1843). Another note, in a 19th century hand, appears on the verso of the leaf opposite the title-page in volume 1. Anthony Purver (1702 - 1777) was apprenticed as a boy to a shoemaker, but he taught himself Hebrew, Greek, and Latin, and becoming convinced that the text of the Bible was corrupt also believed that he had been called by the divine spirit to produce a new and accurate translation. The translation did not replace the King James version, but Purver's considerable learning appears in the notes. The Monthly Review for 1765 described it as having "no small share of erudition. This is a work to which we should have thought very few individuals equal, however great and extensive their abilities; and we cannot help admiring the man who hath intrepidity enough to attempt it." The Roman Catholic priest and Biblical scholar Alexander Geddes (1737 - 1802) described it as a "crude, incondite, and unshapely pile, without order, symmetry, or taste." Scott Mandelbrote, in his essay, "The English Bible and Its Readers in the Eighteenth Century," asserts that "Purver's translation testified to the difficulty of ignoring or deriding the importance of lay readership of Scripture in eighteen-century polite culture, Yet, in common with many other private translations, it also suggested that the linguistic standards of a refined and newspaper-reading public were too exacting for the antique style of the Authorized Version" (Books and their Readers in Eighteenth Century England: New Essays, ed. Isabel Rivers [2001]).

A Flemish Entertainment. From the Original Picture, Painted by Van Harp, In the Collection of the Right Honourable the Earl of Bute

London: John Boydell, 1 December 1764. Copper engraving, coloured by hand, by William Walker, from Richard Earlom's design after van Herp. 19 1/4 x 25 1/4 inches. A very fine genre picture, expertly interpreted by Earlom and Walker. The artist of the original work is probably Willem van Herp (not Harp as in the title): the most likely candidate from amongst a prolific family of 17th-century Flemish painters. A riotous scene, full of movement, set in an anteroom in a Flemish tavern. In the foreground a cat and dog pause momentarily during their ongoing battle. Guests are seated around a table set with bread and ham. A small boy reaches for the ham. The men, all somewhat the worse for drink, sit or stand around. One man relieves himself in the background, whilst two of his companions try and sweet-talk two of the serving maids, both of whom resist, one tries to keep her paramour at arms length whilst still maintaining her grip on a dish of fresh radishes, but a third seated figure reaches up and pulls her towards him by her apron. It has been observed that the tobacco 17th century Dutch and English men (and for that matter that the Native Americans) smoked was considerably more narcotic than that available today, and here, four of the much less than sober men are smoking. In any event, this is an excellent example of the obstensibly moralistic illustrations that the Dutch painted but which were ultimately celebrations of inebriation, particularly in Frans Hals' and Jan Steen's work. These pictorial celebrations resonated with the English of course, with their venerable traditions of heavy beer drinking and smoke filled taverns.

NEW ENGLAND'S PROSPECT. BEING A TRUE, LIVELY, AND EXPERIMENTAL DESCRIPTION OF THAT PART OF AMERICA, COMMONLY CALLED NEW-ENGLAND: DISCOVERING THE STATE OF THAT COUNTRY, BOTH AS IT STANDS TO OUR NEW-COME ENGLISH PLANTERS; AND TO THE OLD NATIVE INHABITANTS. AND LAYING DOWN THAT WHICH MAY BOTH ENRICH THE KNOWLEDGE OF THE MIND-TRAVELLING READER, OR BENEFIT THE FUTURE VOYAGER

London, Printed; Boston, Re-printed: Thomas and John Fleet..., 1764.. xviii,128pp. Modern brown morocco, ruled in gilt, spine richly gilt, leather label. Titlepage silked. Evenly tanned. Very good. In a cloth slipcase. Although styled "third edition" on the titlepage, this is actually the fourth edition overall, and the first American edition. The earliest topographical description of the Massachusetts colony, according to Vail, and the first detailed account of the animals and plants of New England, as well as the Indian tribes of the region. The first section is devoted to the landscape, animals, and plants, while the second describes the Indian tribes. Appended is a vocabulary of Indian words, one of the earliest published for New England. One of the most important early New England works, of considerable rarity. This edition contains a new introduction by Nathaniel Rogers which surveys the political and economic relationship between Great Britain and the colonies, and suggests this was issued as part of a discussion of the Sugar Act and the impending Stamp Act.
