Les Nymphes de la Seine, poëme.

s.l., 1763. - Petit in-8. 29pp. Cioranescu, 41018. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Jerusalem Delivered

London - R. and J. Dodsley et al., 1763. London - R. and J. Dodsley et al., 1763 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition. A scarce copy of Torquato Tasso's best-known poem, La Gerusalemme Liberata, or Jerusalem Delivered, translated by John Hoole. This is the first edition of this well known translation, that would go through many reprints. In the poem, Tasso depicts a highly imaginative version of the combats between Christians and Muslims at the end of the First Crusade, during the siege of Jerusalem. The Gerusalemme Liberata occupies a larger space in the history of European literature, and is a more considerable work. Yet the commanding qualities of this epic poem, those which revealed Tasso's individuality, and which made it immediately pass into the rank of classics, beloved by the people no less than by persons of culture, are akin to the lyrical graces of Aminta. Monastic bookplates to front pastedown. Complete in two volumes. Condition: In calf bindings. Externally rubbed, marks to the boards and wear to the spines. Front joint of volume I failed, with front board detached; all other joints cracked. Internally, firmly bound. Institutional stamps to endpapers and title page. Library labels to front pastedowns. Ink inscriptions to front free-endpaper. Bookplate of Rev. B. Birchby to verso of front free-endpaper. Pages have some scattered spotting throughout. Overall: FAIR..

However, when the first edition was actually published by Robert Dodsely in London, it was revised to meet the general needs of the scholars and the reading public. The edition was very small in number and seen as a pilot project. Lowth wrote that he hoped to receive ""the judgement of the learned upon it,"" and aimed to publish a better edition in the future. In the midst of the burgeoning market for English grammars, Lowth's book was an immediate success. Dodsely, recognizing the enormous commercial potential of the new grammar, pressed Lowth to prepare this second edition as quickly as possible. As the the publisher of Samuel Johnson's extremely popular ""Dictionary of the English Language"" (1755), Dodsely also saw an opportunity to make up for the shortcomings of the ill-considered and severely criticized grammar prefixed to the dictionary. & & The second edition is an important one: While it's not the first, a good deal of scholarly opinion thinks of the second as more important. It's for this reason that David Reibel's well known facsimile edition of Lowth's major works only included this second edition. Also, history often credits Lowth for the grammatical rule that two negatives become a positive— this was usually attributed to the first edition, but in fact it begins its life in the second. It appears on pages 138-140. Reibel calls attention to this in his paper ""An Abundance of Negatives: A brief history of the concept of multiple negation in English from Robert Lowth to the present day."" The second edition also has the first appearance of Lowth's guidance against using double superlatives and comparatives (See The BIshop's Grammar, p. 62-63; Tieken-Boon van Ostade, 2011). & & Lowth (1710-1787) was primarily known in his day as the Bishop of London, and the Hebrew scholar who authored Praelectiones Academicae which put forth the idea that sacred poetry be read as poetry, and which should be examined by the ordinary standards of literary criticism. Lowth was also the biographer of William of Wykeham and an able translator. Today he is remembered chiefly for his Grammar, first published in 1762, which was widely popular and still in use well into the 19th century. & & Catalogue notes by Dobson Gault. Alston I, 213. "

A good set only. Ferdinand Berthoud (1727-1807), was a Swiss watchmaker, marine clockmaker, and writer on horological subjects. He was born in Neuchâtel, Switzerland but In 1745 he moved to Paris, where he established his business and lived for the rest of his life. Berthoud’s extensive knowledge and talent were coupled with an indefatigable energy, and his technical training was matured and perfected by his contact with other masters of the trade. He is credited with making improvements in Pierre Leroy's detent escapement, the control mechanism used in chronometers, and for his advances in the mechanisms of marine clocks he was made a member of the French Institute and of the Royal Society, London. He was nominated Clockmaker to the French Navy in 1762 and to the French King in 1773. Ferdinand Berthoud is moreover the author of the watchmaking texts of the Encyclopedia of Diderot and d’Alembert. Baillie, Clocks and Watches An Historical Bibliography, page 262: "Less than half of Vol. 1 is devoted to describing various types of clocks and watches. The drawings are admirable, many are in perspective and some show what are now termed exploded views. The remainder of the volume describes in great detail the actual operations of making clocks and watches, including making springs, enamelling dials and gilding ... The second volume starts with wheel teeth and the calculation of trains. Then follows a long series of experiments on the pendulum, and the effect on its arc and isochronism of different escapements. From these the author concludes, and probably was the first to conclude, that the aim should be, not an isochronous pendulum, but an isochronous combination of pendulum and escapement. After several chapters on the temperature compensation of pendulums, a similar series of experiments is described on watch balances, from which the author succeeds in reaching a fair degree of temperature compensation by varying the stiffness of the mainspring and the mass of the balance wheel. He describes an observatory clock and two designs of marine time-piece, in which he uses curb compensation with a gridiron. Harrison's name is not mentioned, but the author does not explicitly claim the compensation device as his invention, and it may be presumed that he had seen, or had knowledge of, Harrison's No. 1 time-piece."         AUTOGRAPH LETTER, SIGNED, FROM GEORGE CROGHAN, CONCERNING A MAP OF THE AMERICAN COLONIES].

[N.p. n.d., but ca. 1763]. - [1]p. Quarto sheet. Separation at old fold, repaired on verso with contemporary paper. Minor wear otherwise. Very good. Croghan, a deputy Indian agent serving under British agent William Johnson, writes this letter to an unnamed recipient concerning a map of the northern British colonies. This letter presumably accompanied the map in question, and both this letter and the map were likely sent to a cartographer or artisan of some kind; due to the date and the available resources, it is almost certain that the map Croghan refers to is that of Lewis Evans. In part: "I Send you this Map wh. is to be Inlarged Takeing In all the province of New York to Connecticut River and as far back as the Limits of Cannada all the Jersey Pensylvaine Maryland & Virginia the Lackes & back Cuntry is properly & well Lay'd. Down in this & the Larger Scail its Lay'd. Down on the better, one Copey is for Sir William Johnson to Settle the Boundry with the Indians by the other is to be Sent the proprietors when the boundry is [pricht?] of, on itt." In the lower left corner is written in another hand, "The Map when Enlarged was 7 ft 2 in Length & 4 ft 3 inches in Breadth. Takeing in Connecticut River & the Massisippa all Virgina & Canda to the Lat. of Montreal." As indicated in the letter, the map was to assist in the boundary dispute between the British and the Native Americans, giving a probable date for the letter to circa 1763, around the end of Pontiac's Rebellion and the Royal Proclamation of 1763 which legally curtailed white settlement past the Appalachian Mountains. George Croghan (1718-82) was an Irish-born fur-trader who became acquainted with the Great Lake Region Indians and their languages through his trading pursuits. Breaking the traditional modus operandi of British traders, Croghan traveled to the Indians, rather than waiting for them to arrive at a British post. This allowed him to spend time among the native peoples, who he grew to respect, learning their customs and languages. In 1756, he began service as the deputy Indian agent under William Johnson, the British Indian Agent in the area, a position he held until retiring in 1772. A fascinating document, which leads to the mystery of whether or not such a large scale map was created, and if so, does it still exist somewhere.
