Extremely rare work on the Augustinian missions in the Philippines and China. 1763. Madrid. Andres Ortega. In 4to (197 mm x 137 mm). 1 [blank] + 8 ff. + 247. Contemporary vellum, spine lettered in ink, very good condition. A fine copy, very crisp, fresh and clean, with barely any signs of foxing.First edition. A very rare work on the progress of the Augustinians missions in South East Asia, Philippines and China; it includes an immense array of information on the costumes, religion, ethnology, superstitions, manners and way of life of the natives ?of the Philippines-, habits, religion, geography, products, and progress of the faith. It is also a lengthy and substantial source for the state of the region shortly before the expulsion of the Jesuits.         FREEWILL, FOREKNOWLEDGE, AND FATE. A FRAGMENT

London: Printed for R. and J. Dodsley, [1763].. xxxi,[1 errata],268pp. Octavo. Modern half calf and marbled boards, raised bands, gilt label. Old divinity school stamp on title, minor foxing, but a very good copy, very neatly bound. First edition. The pseudonymously published prelude to Tucker's magnum opus, THE LIGHT OF NATURE PURSUED. This "1763 fragment was strongly criticized in the MONTHLY REVIEW, to which Tucker provided a humorous reply, MAN IN QUEST OF HIMSELF, under the new pseudonym Cuthbert Comment. In 1768, again using the pseudonym Edward Search, he published the first four volumes of his book; the last three volumes were posthumously published under the editorship of his daughter Judith in 1778 ... Although an occasionally eccentric and digressive text, THE LIGHT OF NATURE PURSUED enjoyed a high reputation from its first appearance. In the introduction to his MORAL AND POLITICAL PHILOSOPHY (1785) William Paley emphasized his deep indebtedness to Tucker in expounding his ethical theory. Paley considered Tucker to be a very original thinker. His work was also highly praised by Sir James MacIntosh, who had used his ideas in his lectures on ethics ..." - DNB. Tucker's writings were also read and admired by, among others, Coleridge, Godwin and Hazlett, and the latter undertook an abridgement of the full work, published in 1807. ESTC locates ten copies in North America, and OCLC adds a few more, but this work is uncommon in the trade. ESTC T117455. NCBEL II: 1893.

Voyage from Montreal on the River St. Lawrence through the Continent of North America to the Frozen Pacific Ocean in the Years 1789 and 1793. With a Preliminary Account of the Rise, Progress, and present State of the Fur Trade of That Country.

John Morgan, Thick 8vo, recent tan calf spine and corners, old marbled boards, engraved portrait frontispiece, , morocco lettering piece on spine, half title, large folding map, viii, cxxvi, 392 pp. Ex-library copy, rubber stamp on a few pages of the New Jersey Historical Society, marbled boards a bit rubbed, some foxing to endpapers and frontispiece, ink additions to Chippewa language word list, folding map with one repair to fold, and some minor chips and folds in one margin, still map is in very nice condition; overall very good. Sir Alexander MacKenzie (1763/4-1820) was born in Stornoway, Isle of Lewis and was an important explorer of the American continent. Around 1779 he joined the firm of Finlay and Gregory as a fur trader, and eventually he would take a post in the west, which set the stage for his exploratory efforts. MacKenzie is best known for his overland exploration of Canada, and reaching the Pacific Ocean in 1793. In addition to adding to a geographical understanding of the area he explored, he also added considerable knowledge of Native Americans in that region. This work includes a translation of some words from the Chipewyan language. This edition is preceded by the original London edition in 1801, and a Paris and New York editions earlier in 1802. While there is some confusion on the pagination of this edition, this copy appears complete, including the very attractive map of America, which is often missing. Wagner-Camp suggests that the Philadelphia edition was often published in two volumes and with three maps. The OCLC and Field list only one map. Howes M133. Wagner-Camp 1:5. Field 968. OCLC. ODNB.

Philosophie rurale, ou Économie générale et politique de l'agriculture, réduite à l'ordre immuable des Loix physiques & morales, qui assurent la prospérité des Empires

Amsterdam: Chez les Libraires Associés, , 1763. Quarto (255 x 195 mm). Contemporary French pale calf, blind rule border on covers, spine decorated gilt in compartments, morocco label, marbled endpapers, edges stained red. Woodcut printer's device on title and vignette to the first leaf of text. 3 engraved plates of the Tableau Économique and tables in the text. A little worming to the joints and spine, contents unaffected, short split to the upper joint skilfully mended and corners restored. Private library ownership stamp to the title-page. A very good copy. Rare first edition of Mirabeau's "magisterial account of the views of the physiocratic school" (Higgs), containing for the first time Quesnay's masterful explanation of his Tableau Économique, "one of those works in the history of economics which have often been regarded as an anticipation of modern theories" (Schumpeter, p. 242). There have been no copies at auction in the last 35 years and only a handful of copies traded privately in this time. Originally printed as a pamphlet of ?? pages in 1759 in a minute number of copies, Quesnay's Tableau Économique was first revealed to the public as the final part of Mirabeau's L'Ami des Hommes, in 1760. In the Philosophie rurale, Quesnay for the first time gives a full explanation of his system. The tableau économique is credited as the "first precise formulation" of interdependent systems in economics and the origin of the theory of the multiplier in economics. An analogous table is used in the theory of money creation under fractional-reserve banking by relending of deposits, leading to the money multiplier. "The Tableau has been considered a first rough presentation of Keynes's multiplier and as a sort of general equilibrium system of a Walrasian type (Schumpeter, 1954, p. 242). For others, the Tableau is an input-output table. Because of the Tableau, Quesnay has been regarded as an early econometrician. The Tableau has also been interpreted as the first classical system of price determination, thus anticipating Marx's reproduction schemes and Sraffa's price system" (The New Palgrave). "In 1763 appeared the Philosophie rurale ... which presents perhaps the most complete and magisterial account of the views of the physiocratic school" (Higgs). "Quesnay collaborated very substantially in preparing this last major work, contributing the final chapter with further explanations and manipulations of his Tableau Economique analysis" (The New Palgrave). Schumpeter calls the work "the first of the four text-books of physiocrat orthodoxy" (p. 225).

Componimenti Poetici pel solennissimo ingresso di sua il Signor Cavaliere Eccellenza Francesco Morosini all dignita di Procurator de S. Marco per merito.

In Venezia Appresso Luigi Pavini con Licenza de Superiori 1763 - FIRST AND ONLY EDITION. 4to, 298 x 222 mms., pp. lxxxviii, xxi, title-page in red and black with engraved ornament, engraved head- and tail-pieces, one engraved vignette signed "F. Bartolozzi," the others unsigned, but probably by Bartolozzi, contemporary marbled wrappers. A fine copy. Gozzi published several works with a similar title, including one in 1763 entitled Componimenti poetici per l'ingresso solenne alla dignità di procuratore di S. Marco p er merito di Sua Eccellenza il signor Gian-Francesco Pisani. This poetical tribute to the Doge of Venice, Francesco Morosini (1619 -1694), who was probably the most illustrious member of the distinguished Morosini family, is dedicated to Elizabetta Cornaro Morosini, described in the dedication as "consorte di Lei," though it seems unlikely that she would have been alive in 1763. The work contains poems by the editor, Gozzi, as well as Lodovico Emili Bresciano, Girolamo Vaninetti, Antonio Lambertenghi, Carlo Casati, among others. Those with a taste for printing errors will relish the one on page xvi, where the word "sonetto" contained within an engraved vignette is printed upside down. Copies with similar titles can be found in WordCat, but none paying tribute to Francesco Morosini and printed in Venice in 1763, so this particular example of what is probably a sub-genre of 18th century Italian poetical literature is at least uncommon.         L'Economie politique.

(Higgs, 2859. INED, n°1772. Kress, n° 6100. Manque à Goldsmiths et Einaudi). Quelques petites taches et quelques auréoles claires. Bon exemplaire. Rare. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Rare document includes both the signatures of "The Father of New Hampshire," Meshech Weare, and his wife, Mehitable as witnesses to a land transaction

Manuscript Document Signed, ìMeshech Weareî, ìMehitable Weareî and ìBenjamin Frenchî, 1p., approximately 7.5î x 12î. New Hampshire, February 18, 1763. Partial split at folds and small portion of text loss not near signatures, else good condition with dark, bold signatures and remnants of original wax seal. Weare was elected first president of New Hampshire in 1784. Often called "The Father of New Hampshire", Weare was active in New Hampshire politics for many years. Between 1739 and 1776, Weare served as selectman and representative for Hampton Falls in the New Hampshire House of Representatives, its speaker and clerk, as well as one of New Hampshireís delegates to the Albany Congress in 1754. As a prominent political figure, he was asked to witness the signing of important transactions, such as this one. Women were not usually asked to bear witness to documents in the eighteenth century, thus the signature of his wife beneath his, as witness, is rare. The land was sold to an ìAbner Philbrick of Hamptonî for ìthe sum of Three Hundred and Ten Pounds old Tenor of New Hampshireî, quite a sizable sum in that day. The town in which the Weareís land is located, Hampton Falls, was officially incorporated in 1726, however most referred to it as a parish until 1835. The plot of land next to the Weareís house is now the site of a park.

The Police of France, Or, an Account of the Laws & Regulations Established in That Kingdom, for the Preservation of Peace, and the Preventing of Robberies: To Which Is Added, a Particular Description of the Police and Government of the City of Paris

London: Printed by E. Owen and T. Harrison, 1763. Hardcover. Very Good. London: E. Owen and T. Harrison, 1763. 4to. 138pp. Inscribed by Sir William Mildmay. Three-quarter bound in dark brown contemporary calf-skin leather with brown marbled boards. 4 raised bands. 5 compartments. Spine label with gilt lettering. Gilt embellishments along spine. Tight binding and solid boards. Minimal shelf wear. Slight rubbing to boards and spine edges. Minor scattered foxing. Owners inscription over preface. Upper corner of final seven leaves repaired. Sir William Mildmays inscription at end of preface. A descriptive account of the laws and policing of France shortly following the war of Austrian succession, and during the 7 Years War from the eyes of an English liason. Published in the same year as the signing of the Treaty of Paris. Includes not only laws of the time, but the salaries of different ranks of officers. Mildmay was a British lawyer, born in India, and known for his time spent in France. Upon entering the bar, Mildmay worked in a minor capacity for British government officials, which eventually earned him a place with William Shirley on the Anglo-French Commission in Paris from 1750-1755. The purpose of the commission was to settle the final disputed sections of the Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle, signed in 1748, to end the War of Austrian Succession. Issues at hand included the boundaries of Nova Scotia; the right to the islands of St. Lucia, Tobago, St. Vincent, and Dominica; and the accounts of prizes taken at sea after the signing of the preliminary articles of peace. Mildmay was separately commissioned to effect the exchange of prisoners. In May 1752, Ruvigny de Cosne, secretary of the British embassy in Paris, succeeded Shirley. Negotiations dragged on for several years, and the failure of the commission to conclude a lasting treaty with France influenced the outbreak of the Seven Years' War in 1756. After the commission finished its mission in 1755, Mildmay returned to England, where he wrote an official report on the commission. Mildmay wrote several books on French society based on his time living in France. During the Seven Years' War, Mildmay served as a captain in the militia, and later as sheriff of Essex. A collectible copy in very good condition. Ships daily.

Bottom corners of frontispiece, title page, and first page of preface torn. Interior margin and text of p. i/ii torn. Chip from pp. 13-14. Stained throughout. Dedicated to the Right Honourable the Earl of Chesterfield." The DNB states that when Beau Nash first entered the Inner Temple as a law student in 1693 he had such good manners, opulent taste in dress, and so high a standard of living, most of his fellow students suspected him of being a highwayman. His addiction to gambling drew him to Bath in 1705 where he soon became a hit at the balls and assembles. He became Master of Ceremonies and the informal king of Bath. 18th century humour at its best/worst.
