        Letters between the Honourable Andrew Erskine, and James Boswell, Esq;

      London: printed by Samuel Chandler; for W. Flexney 1763 - [4],156p.; 8ø. Contemporary calf, old reback leading hinge weakening but still sound, red label, spine a bit rubbed but a very good copy. Pottle 8. Rothschild 430. Maggs Sam Johnson, 1983. No 456. (265) Many of the letters are in verse; besides the twenty-one letters in prose and verse by Boswell, this volume also contains the following poems, "Ode to Gluttony", "Epigram", and "Ode on an Engagement between the Right Honourable Lady B****, and a Turkey-Cock", one of which had already been printed in the Original Poems. This was the first of Boswell's publications to bear his name. "The letters are genuine in the sense that they were unquestionably sent through the post, and are crammed full of current news and personal allusions. They were plainly, however, from the very first of the series, conscious literary compositions intended ultimately for publication. The book is the first considerable example of Boswell's life-long willingness to be indiscreet provided thereby he could be interesting. In these breezy epistles both his and Erskine's relatives, friends, and connections are discussed by name and at length in the most impudent manner." Pottle p.24. This book was published on April 12th, 1763, a day described by Boswell as "the greatest day that Erskine and I ever saw." Boswell reviewed the letters anonymously in the London Chronicle calling them "a work of pure genius". A little over a month after publication he first met Samuel Johnson, who did not approve of printing private correspondence. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        RELAZIONE del Viaggio fatto dal Collegio fortuito. Opera di Anonimo Malalingua Accademico Spregiudicato. Prima Edizione. ". ridendo dicere verum quis prohibet?".

      - In Bischeri, 1763, nella Stamperia di Chiappone Tetro, con privilegio [ma probabilmente, Colle Alberti, 1763]. Manoscritto cartaceo, in-folio, cartonatura originale di tipo archivistico ad ancoraggio diretto sul dorso (mancanze alla carta di rivestimento al dorso), un titolo (non decifrato) manoscritto su tassello di carta applicato al piatto anteriore, pagine [346], le ultime 5 bianche. Ciascun foglio è stato ripiegato longitudinalmente una volta in modo da ottenere due colonne per facciata di cui solo una reca il testo. Steso probabilmente da due mani, in chiarissima grafia, (prima mano le pp. [1], da [5] a [42]; seconda mano pp. [3], [4], da [43] a [341]. Reca una paginazione manoscritta antica, con errori. Condizioni più che buone. Si tratta del resoconto d'un viaggio fatto da un allegra brigata di amici da Bocca d'Elsa a Pisa, per assistere all'illuminazione per la festa di S. Ranieri. Il lungo racconto è a chiave: sia i personaggi (che sono personaggi reali) e i luoghi visitati, sono presentati con nomi fittizi o anagrammati; in principio del volume sono presenti due pagine che recano gli anagrammi e i nomi fittizi dei personaggi e dei luoghi, con il loro relativo scioglimento. Il racconto, seppur basato - a quanto afferma l'autore nell'indirizzo al lettore - su un viaggio reale, si sviluppa su un registro di totale fantasia: si svolge su una barca, come se si trattasse d'un viaggio in mare, con varie tappe nei porti di numerosi paesi toscani. E' suddiviso in 14 giornate (prima giornata il 3 di giugno 1762) durante le quali i componenti la compagnia sostano nelle varie località, dove vivono alcune divertenti avventure. Sulla barca, durante i tratti di navigazione, si intrattengono raccontandosi storie piccanti e boccaccesche, con particolari di fantasia (anche se, sicuramente, basate su avvenimenti reali). Il volume è dedicato a Lacervano Ichellerice, gran cappellano di Lilletrecoba, pseudonimi sciolti dalla chiave iniziale in Valeriano Ceccherelli cappellano di Colle Alberti, e la dedica è datata: Lilletrecoba (Colle Alberti) 30 dicemmbre 1763. Non abbiamo trovato notizia di altre copie di questo testo, né in collezioni pubbliche, né in private. Seguendo la iniziale chiave di scioglimento dei nomi si possono probabilmente riconoscere fra i protagonisti del racconto alcuni personaggi che hanno lasciato qualche traccia di sé: Stefano Fabbrini (pittore), Domenico Ceccherelli (costruttore edile?), Pompeo Signorini (giureconsulto). Prendendo per veri il luogo e la data della dedica, l'autore potrebbe essere individuato fra i membri della famiglia proprietaria della tenuta di Colle Alberti (Cerreto Guidi) nel 1763, o fra i dimoranti in quella fattoria in quell'anno. Si tratta, in ogni caso, d'un racconto a chiave con influenze boccaccesche piuttosto interessante, inedito e - probabilmente - a tutt'oggi sconosciuto. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        LES TOULOUSAINES ou LETTRES HISTORIQUES et APOLOGETIQUES, en faveur de la Religion Reformée, & de divers Protestans condamnés dans ces derniers tems par le Parlement de Toulouse, ou dans le Haut Languedoc.

      1763 - A Edimbourg [Lausanne], sans nom d'éditeur, 1763. In-12 (100 X 167) demi-basane fauve, dos cinq nerfs sertis de filets dorés, pièce de titre rouge dans un encadrement de filets dorés, tranches mouchetées en rouge (reliure de l'époque) ; (1), faux-titre, titre, 2 feuillets non chiffrés (table), 458 pages, un feuillet d'errata, (1). Quelques restaurations à la reliure. EDITION ORIGINALE, de second tirage. Selon BARBIER, IV-723, on distingue deux tirages d'après le nombre de pages de l'ouvrage : 444 pages pour le premier, 458 pour le second qui contient quelques courtes additions. Dans ce mémoire composé sous la forme de trente lettres, COURT DE GEBELIN plaide la cause de la tolérance religieuse, s'appuyant notamment sur les "affaires" du début de la décennie 1760 (Rochette, Sirven, Calas) afin de modifier l'image négative que les protestants avaient auprès de l'opinion publique. A la suite des "intellectuels" du Refuge qui ont fait évoluer les esprits en déployant une réflexion de fond sur la tolérance et la liberté de conscience, sur l'histoire, sur le droit et sur la politique qui va profondément marquer la pensée protestante européenne, "Les Toulousaines", tout comme le "Traité sur la tolérance" de Voltaire publié la même année, font partie de ces apports qui, tout au long du XVIIIe siècle, constituent une contribution non négligeable à ce qu'il est convenu d'appeler les Lumières. A noter que Court de Gébelin (1725-1784) a adhéré, peu après 1776, à la franc-maçonnerie et fut membre de la loge des "Neuf soeurs". AGREABLE EXEMPLAIRE dans sa reliure de l'époque. GOOD COPY. Mendelssohn I, p. 434; for de la Caille: Dictionary of Scientific Biography, VII, pp. 542-545 . Nicolas Louis De La Caille (1713-62), an eminent French mathematician and astronomer, arrived at the Cape of Good Hope on March 30, 1751 and began a study of the parallax of the moon. In this diary, he gives descriptions of Rio Janeiro, the Cape, Bourbon, and Ascension. De La Caille's account of the Hottentot and other customs and societies dissented from and superseded Kolbe's narrative, although he made almost as great errors as his predecessor. However, with the publication of this journal, Kolbe was no longer considered a standard author. (See Theal, History of South Africa, 1691-1795)

Una cum nova, eaque excultiore, nec non ad sensum Scripturae magis accommoda versione Germanica, in commodum et utilitatem totius ecclesiae Catholicae praesertim Germanicae elucubrata. A theologis maonasterii D. Ettonis prope S. Landelinum, vulgo Ettenheim-Münster ordinis S. Benedicti, sub directione P. Germani Cartier. Ibidem Profelsi, Capitularis, nec non SS. Theologiae, & SS. Canonum Professoris. In Quatuor Tomos Distincta. (Vols. 1 & 2 of 4)

      Jacobi Friderici Bez & Sociorum, Constance 1763 - Folio. [26], 758, 562pp. Two vols. in one. Original blind-tooled vellum with gold lettering on spine. Raised bands. Printer's device on title-page. Decorative head- and tailpieces. It is profusely illustrated with 29 full-page copper-engravings, each one being numbered and having its own caption in German and Latin. Priest at the Benedictine monastery in Ettingheimmunster, where he headed a team to achieve a Bible translation in understandable German, Cartier died before the completion of the work, in 1749. The first edition of the Ettingheimmunster Bible was published post mortem 2 years later (1751).The team worked 10 years on the Bible translation. Its uniqueness is not only the clear German, but also the division: Whereas Biblia Vulgatae (standard Catholic Bibles) are normally divided into three parts, this Biblia is divided into four parts:1) From Genesis to Chronicles.2) From Ezra to Ben Sirah.3) Prophets and Maccabees.4) New Testament. (This copy contains the first two parts). Contains also a "syllabus" of different Bible editions, Church fathers and exegetes as well as a dissertation on the topic of the earthly paradise.Another sign of its uniqueness is the inclusion of Latin commentaries from Church fathers and contemporary exegetes. Furthermore, the attempt to deliver a clear and understandable German was a clear focus point of the group (and one of the reason why it took so long). It specifically attempts to improve a German that Dietenberger's and Ulenberg's translations had lacked. However, the aim was to still be as close as possible to the Semitic language character of the source. The second edition [our copy] was published in 1763 and has different illustrations than the first edition. Some edge wear on binding with minor soiling/age-toning and slight rubbing on raised bands and on title-label. Gold lettering slightly faded. Some foxing/browning throughout. Text in German and Latin. Binding and interior in overall good+ condition. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

      xx (i.e. xxiv), 448, 59 pp. 8vo, cont. mottled sheep (head of spine & corners a little worn, minor rubbing), spine nicely gilt, red morocco lettering piece on spine, arms in gilt on each cover of Guillaume-Gabriel Pavée de Vendeuvre (see below). Paris: Pissot & Gogue, 1763. An important sale catalogue of the library of the Maison Professe des Jesuites of Paris, founded in 1580. This library was comprised of many donations, the most notable being that of Pierre Daniel Huet (1630-1721), bishop of Avranches and scholar. Huet, whose scholarship was very well-known, made considerable scientific researches as well as classical studies; he edited the famous Delphin series of the Latin classics in about sixty volumes. Huet formed a great library of books and MSS. which he donated to this Jesuit house upon his death. When the Jesuits were expelled from France in 1762, the entire library of the house was offered for sale by auction. However, Huet's books were withdrawn before the sale due to the terms of his donation and were given by his heir to the Royal Library in 1765. This was one of the best and most complete Jesuit libraries in France. It numbered 30,000 volumes in 1754 (this sale catalogue has 7252 lots). It must be noted that this catalogue gives us the best idea of the contents of Huet's great collection. Very good copy. It lacks one of the two unnumbered pages following the preliminary leaves and the final six leaves, which are not present in most copies, listing the withdrawn books. However, bound-in at the end is the 8-page schedule of the sale of the Louis-le-Grand library, sold in the following year (I haven't seen this before). Guillaume-Gabriel Pavée de Vendeuvre (1779-1870), a native of Troyes, served as deputy in the French National Assembly for many years. ❧ Blogie col. 9. Franklin, Les Anciennes Bibliothèques de Paris, pp. 269-77-"une collection très-complète et très-bien choisie." Grolier Club, Printed Catalogues of French Book Auctions...1643-1830, 181.         [AUTOGRAPH LETTER, SIGNED, FROM GEORGE CROGHAN, CONCERNING A MAP OF THE AMERICAN COLONIES]

      [N.p. n.d., but ca. 1763].. [1]p. Quarto sheet. Separation at old fold, repaired on verso with contemporary paper. Minor wear otherwise. Very good. Croghan, a deputy Indian agent serving under British agent William Johnson, writes this letter to an unnamed recipient concerning a map of the northern British colonies. This letter presumably accompanied the map in question, and both this letter and the map were likely sent to a cartographer or artisan of some kind; due to the date and the available resources, it is almost certain that the map Croghan refers to is that of Lewis Evans. In part: "I Send you this Map wh. is to be Inlarged Takeing In all the province of New York to Connecticut River and as far back as the Limits of Cannada all the Jersey Pensylvaine Maryland & Virginia the Lackes & back Cuntry is properly & well Lay'd. Down in this & the Larger Scail its Lay'd. Down on the better, one Copey is for Sir William Johnson to Settle the Boundry with the Indians by the other is to be Sent the proprietors when the boundry is [pricht?] of, on itt." In the lower left corner is written in another hand, "The Map when Enlarged was 7 ft 2 in Length & 4 ft 3 inches in Breadth. Takeing in Connecticut River & the Massisippa all Virgina & Canda to the Lat. of Montreal." As indicated in the letter, the map was to assist in the boundary dispute between the British and the Native Americans, giving a probable date for the letter to circa 1763, around the end of Pontiac's Rebellion and the Royal Proclamation of 1763 which legally curtailed white settlement past the Appalachian Mountains. George Croghan (1718-82) was an Irish-born fur-trader who became acquainted with the Great Lake Region Indians and their languages through his trading pursuits. Breaking the traditional modus operandi of British traders, Croghan traveled to the Indians, rather than waiting for them to arrive at a British post. This allowed him to spend time among the native peoples, who he grew to respect, learning their customs and languages. In 1756, he began service as the deputy Indian agent under William Johnson, the British Indian Agent in the area, a position he held until retiring in 1772. A fascinating document, which leads to the mystery of whether or not such a large scale map was created, and if so, does it still exist somewhere.

        A Description of Ventilators : whereby Great Quantities of Fresh Air May with Ease be conveyed into Mines, Goals [sic.], Hospitals, Work-Houses and Ships, In Exchange for their Noxious Air

      London: W. Innys, R. Manby, T. Woodward, 1763. Two volumes, octavo, five folding plates, some very light browning and two plates bound in upside down; a good set in contemporary speckled calf, a little chipped at spine, hinges starting but firm. First edition: Hales' ventilators became known as "ship's lungs", and were so appreciated by eighteenth-century sailors, and contributed so significantly to an improvement in seaboard conditions, that captains reported the crews needed little encouragement to work the machines. After a leisurely twelve years in residence at Cambridge, Hales (1677-1761) took up a parish and became heavily involved in local affairs, but this did not preclude him from a long and productive scientific career. His continuing fame was assured with these two books, which effectively invented artificial ventilation. Designed to draw fresh air into confined spaces, his machines were installed in His Majesty's ships, merchant vessels, slave ships, in hospitals, even at the court of King's Bench, the Drury Lane Theatre and Newgate Prison. As a result, there was a marked improvement in mortality rates, even among French prisoners-of-war held in English gaols, which led Hales to quip that he hoped none would accuse him of corresponding with the enemy. He was a pioneer in public health, a role that he apparently considered a vocation: his friend Gilbert White commented that Hales could barely be restrained from offering unsolicited advice to friends and acquaintances, his wide-ranging mind capable of discoursing endlessly on the perils of encrusted tea-kettles or on the best methods of maintaining the keels of boats to passing ferrymen. White records one particularly endearing act of benevolence, commenting that he once spotted Hales busy painting white the 'tops of the foot-path posts, that his neighbours might not be injured by running against them in the dark' (DNB). Hales was elected a fellow of the Royal Society in 1718.

[Attributes: Hard Cover]

        A Description of Ventilators : whereby Great Quantities of Fresh Air May with Ease be conveyed into Mines, Goals [sic.], Hospitals, Work-Houses and Ships, In Exchange for their Noxious Air

      W. Innys, R. Manby, T. Woodward, London 1763 - Two volumes, octavo, five folding plates, some very light browning and two plates bound in upside down; a good set in contemporary speckled calf, a little chipped at spine, hinges starting but firm. [Attributes: First Edition]
