An essay in two parts, the first shewing when, and by whom letters were invented : the formation of the alphabets of various nations : their manner of writing, on what materials, and with what instruments men have written in different ages to the present time : wherein is considered the great utility of this art with regard to mankind : the second part consists of a compendious account of the most celebrated English penmen, with the titles and characters of the books they have published both from the rolling and letter press : interspersed with many interesting particulars by way of notes throughout the first part : and the second is a new species of biography never attempted before in English : the whole

The North Briton. To which is added, by Way of Appendix, the Letters which passed between the Rt. Hon. Earl of Talbot, &c. and John Wilkes, Esq; previous to their Duel. Together with all the Papers relative to the Confinement and Enlargement of Mr. Wilkes. With many other curious Particulars. Vol. I [-III].

vols. i & ii Dublin: Printed by J. Potts vol. iii London: Printed by especial appointment for E. Sumpter. And Dublin: Re-printed and sold by the Booksellers 1763 - 3 vols., pp. [i], 195; [i], 173, 33, [1, ads]; [i], 195, 12mo, contemporary calf backed marbled boards, red lettering pieces, numbered in gilt direct, very good. A very pretty set. ESTC has three entries for Dublin 1763 editions, one for the first 2 vols., another for the third vol. alone, and another entry for the second edition (all three vols., T181842), this last noting that in the third volume the imprint reads: 'Lnodon [sic]: printed by especial appointment for E. Sumpter' &c. In this edition 'London' vs. 'Lnodon' is a variant, and is here spelt correctly. The North Briton was 'founded on 5 June 1762 to attack the new ministry of George III's Scottish favourite, Lord Bute . When Bute resigned on 8 April 1763 he was succeeded as prime minister by George Grenville, who had broken with Pitt and Temple in 1761. Wilkes momentarily held his fire, but when Grenville ended the parliamentary session by a king's speech commending the peace, North Briton no. 45 on 23 April denounced the "ministerial effrontery" of obliging George III "to give the sanction of his sacred name" to such "odious" measures and "unjustifiable" declarations. Immediate prosecution of the paper for seditious libel ensued' (ODNB). (ESTC T195003 & N19482)

Solucion del gran problema acerca de la poblacion de las Americas

1763 - Curious Mexican work on the origin of men in America. 1763. Mexico. Imprenta Real del Superior Gobierno, de los herederos de Doña Maria de Ribera. In 8vo (197 mm x 140 mm). 22 ff. + 72 pp. Contemporary calf, possibly Mexican. A fine copy, in it´s entirely genuine condition. First edition. A very curious Mexican imprint dealing on the issue of the population of the Americas, both of men and animals, how they reached it and their settling. The work is written by the Alexo de Orrio (1715 – 1763), a Jesuit philosopher and writer, “The question of the origin of the American Indian had been of great concern to Spanish theologians from the early days of the conquest until well into the period of the Enlightenment, and Father Orrio’s Solucion continued the tradition of thought that had developed from the great Las Casas-Sepulveda debates of the middle of the sixteenth century” (Howell). Orrio was not alone in his search of the origin and population of the Americas, the subject had been long discussed by other before him, and remained the subject of investigation well into the 20th century; the same subject had been investigated by others as Rocha in his “Tratado unico, y singular del origen de los Indios Occidentales del Piru, Mexico, Santa Fe, y Chile” (1681), speculating to the American natives Jewish ancestry. The last copy we have been able to trace in the market was the one offered by Howell in 1980, for 525 $. Orrio also authored the Breve noticia de las fiestas enq ue la muy ilustre ciudad de Zacatecas explico su agradecimiento en la confirmacion del patronato de Nra. Sra. de Guadalupe. Sabin, 750. Medina, Mexico, 4840. Palau, 204612. Leon, Bibliografia Mexicana del Siglo XVIII, 908 (“de gran rareza”). [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

A report of some proceedings on the commission of oyer and terminer and gaol delivery for the trial of the rebels in the year 1746 in the county of Surry [sic], and of other Crown cases. To which are added discourses upon a few branches of the Crown law

Dublin: Printed for Sarah Cotter 8vo (20.3 cm, 8"). xii, 412, [16] pp.. 1763 First Irish edition, following the Oxford first of the preceding year: one of the most authoritative and scholarly of such reports of the time, accompanied by examinations of treason, homicide, accessories, the writings of Lord Hale, etc. Cotter's printing seems to have appeared in two variants, as per ESTC; in the present example, the catchword on p. 406 is "to." Cotter was the daughter of Joseph Cotter and successor to his printing business. She was active from 1757 to 1767 and published/printed law, technical and religious books, belle lettres, and a wide variety of other productions. The trial mentioned in the title refers to that of those arrested for participation in the Jacobite rising of 1745, an attempt by "Bonnie Prince Charlie" (i.e., Charles Edward Stuart) to regain the British throne. (He had timed his effort for a moment when much of the British military was occupied on the continent by the War of the Austrian Succession.) Contemporary speckled calf, rebacked, spine with gilt-stamped leather title-label and blind-tooled tulip decorations between raised bands; hinges (inside) reinforced. Front pastedown and free endpaper each with one small early inked annotation (shelf and price?); first and last few leaves with offsetting to margins; pages generally mildly age-toned with a very few scattered light spots.

Histoire d'Angleterre, contenant la maison de Plantagenet ; contenant la maison de Tudor ; contenant la maison de Stuart

S.n. 1763 - - S.n., A Amsterdam 1763-1766-1769, in-12 (9,5x17cm), 18 volumes reliés. [AUTOMATIC ENGLISH TRANSLATION FOLLOWS] New edition, and probably the first in-4 that brings together three stories published between 1760 and 1765.Traduction Ms. Belot, described by the author himself. Full sheepskin marbled time. Back to nerves decorated with nets. Piece blue morocco title and volume number of brown morocco. Scuffs in caps tail of six volumes. Some gaps on the boards, due to galleries and to the last nerve of Volume I. Border lower flat bare half a cm. Good copy, however, very fresh. The History of England is undoubtedly the most popular work and was a great success of the philosopher David Hume, the father of philosophical empiricism and its importance in the history of philosophy is the measure of Descartes France. The story could not but interest the philosopher effect since it is an unparalleled amount of experience, as such, it is a must for those seeking knowledge; the historian is an empiricist, since can not simply perceive the causal links between facts and events, it is constrained in its vision to design a movement. However, for Hume, there is no way to conceptualize the history and structure typically follows the chronology of events, it is a story provided detailed and England, which extends from the arrival of the Romans in Revolution of 1688; it is divided into three historic and dynastic contemporary: the house of Plantagenet, the Stuarts and the Tudors. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate.         Il Gazzettiere Americano. (3 vols)

1763. AMERICANA. Il Gazzettiere Americano, contenente un distinto Ragguaglio di Tutte le Parti del Nuovo Mondo. Three volumes. xxiii, [1], 216, [2]; 256, [2]; 253, [3] pp. Illustrated with an engraved frontispiece, 3 title-page vignettes, 40 full-page engraved plates, 38 maps and plans (many folding), plus exquisite etched tailpieces throughout. Folio, 303 x 270 mm, bound in contemporary full Italian vellum, later lettering pieces on spines. Livorno: Marco Coltellini, 1763.|~| |~||~||~| First Edition thus, a fine copy of this deluxe Italian eighteenth-century topographical dictionary of the New World. The work was published in English a year earlier in an inferior 12mo-format, illustrated only with eight small maps. This Italian edition is virtually a new work, printed in the eighteenth-century rich Italian style on thick paper, with elegant full-page illustrations, folding plates of habour views, etc. "A comparison of the entries [between the English and Italian editions] shows that although the words were trans-lated literally, the printer, Marco Coltellini, has elevated the cramped, unattractive English original into a handsome book, and the visual effect of the Italian edition is strikingly superior. Because it is a translation of an English work, there is much more information about the English colonies in America than is found in most geographical books written by conti-nental authors up to this time" (Hough, Italians and the Making of America, 81). The text attempts to cover all aspects of the Americas: the land, climate, commerce, goods, government, cities, rivers, mountains, peoples and customs; it is particularly impressive, however, concerning the flora and fauna. A majority of the etched plates are devoted to the indigenous animal and agricultural enterprises, such as a sugar plantation, native cotton manufacturing, tobacco processing, fisheries, and beaver dams, with individual plates of bison, wolverines, porcupines, penguins, Brazilian monkeys, and numerous birds. There are scenes of Barbados, Jamaica, New England, Hudson's Bay, Newfoundland, the Great Lakes, Santo Domingo, Florida, Havana, Lima, Acapulco, Santiago, Boston, New York, Niagara Falls, Quebec, and much more. Some occasional light spotting or browning, short repaired tears in pp. v-vii in Vol. I; some maps strengthened with linen at folds; despite these minor faults, this copy is overall in fresh condition both internally and externally. PROVENANCE: Professor Bombicci with his letterpress book-labels on title-pages of each volume. Luigi Bombicci (1833-1903), the renowned mineralogist, was the director and curator of the Museum of Mineralogy attached to the University of Bologna, and the author of over 200 works on the physical sciences.         Rare document includes both the signatures of "The Father of New Hampshire," Meshech Weare, and his wife, Mehitable as witnesses to a land transaction

Manuscript Document Signed, ?Meshech Weare?, ?Mehitable Weare? and ?Benjamin French?, 1p., approximately 7.5? x 12?. New Hampshire, February 18, 1763. Partial split at folds and small portion of text loss not near signatures, else good condition with dark, bold signatures and remnants of original wax seal. Weare was elected first president of New Hampshire in 1784. Often called "The Father of New Hampshire", Weare was active in New Hampshire politics for many years. Between 1739 and 1776, Weare served as selectman and representative for Hampton Falls in the New Hampshire House of Representatives, its speaker and clerk, as well as one of New Hampshire?s delegates to the Albany Congress in 1754. As a prominent political figure, he was asked to witness the signing of important transactions, such as this one. Women were not usually asked to bear witness to documents in the eighteenth century, thus the signature of his wife beneath his, as witness, is rare. The land was sold to an ?Abner Philbrick of Hampton? for ?the sum of Three Hundred and Ten Pounds old Tenor of New Hampshire?, quite a sizable sum in that day. The town in which the Weare?s land is located, Hampton Falls, was officially incorporated in 1726, however most referred to it as a parish until 1835. The plot of land next to the Weare?s house is now the site of a park.
