Novum testamentum. Juxta exemplar Millianum. Typis Joannis Baskerville

Oxoni: E typographeo Clarendoniano 8vo in 4s (23.5 cm, 9.25"). [4], 676 pp.. 1763 Sole octavo printing of the Greek New Testament using Baskerville type (i.e., Greek type that Baskerville designed and cut himself); and indeed this pleasingly was printed from the only set of Baskerville type that survives to this day, still at Oxford's Clarendon Press. The text was based on the Mill edition of the Greek N.T.; Darlow and Moule notes that while the text "generally reproduces that of Mill . . . Reuss notes seven variations." => An important example of 18th-century fine printing of the Bible. This copy retains its half-title. Provenance: The Howell Bible Collection, Pacific School of Religion (properly released). Contemporary acid-stained calf, rebacked some time ago with morocco, spine with gilt-stamped title and publication information; edges and extremities rubbed, sides and spine with small scuffs. New endpapers with pencilled annotations; back pastedown with California bookseller's small ticket. No library markings. Title-page with tiny nick in upper edge. Pages very slightly age-toned with a very few scattered small spots, otherwise crisp and clean.

        Il Gazzettiere Americano. (3 vols)

1763. AMERICANA. Il Gazzettiere Americano, contenente un distinto Ragguaglio di Tutte le Parti del Nuovo Mondo. Three volumes. xxiii, [1], 216, [2]; 256, [2]; 253, [3] pp. Illustrated with an engraved frontispiece, 3 title-page vignettes, 40 full-page engraved plates, 38 maps and plans (many folding), plus exquisite etched tailpieces throughout. Folio, 303 x 270 mm, bound in contemporary full Italian vellum, later lettering pieces on spines. Livorno: Marco Coltellini, 1763.|~| |~||~||~| First Edition thus, a fine copy of this deluxe Italian eighteenth-century topographical dictionary of the New World. The work was published in English a year earlier in an inferior 12mo-format, illustrated only with eight small maps. This Italian edition is virtually a new work, printed in the eighteenth-century rich Italian style on thick paper, with elegant full-page illustrations, folding plates of habour views, etc. "A comparison of the entries [between the English and Italian editions] shows that although the words were trans-lated literally, the printer, Marco Coltellini, has elevated the cramped, unattractive English original into a handsome book, and the visual effect of the Italian edition is strikingly superior. Because it is a translation of an English work, there is much more information about the English colonies in America than is found in most geographical books written by conti-nental authors up to this time" (Hough, Italians and the Making of America, 81). The text attempts to cover all aspects of the Americas: the land, climate, commerce, goods, government, cities, rivers, mountains, peoples and customs; it is particularly impressive, however, concerning the flora and fauna. A majority of the etched plates are devoted to the indigenous animal and agricultural enterprises, such as a sugar plantation, native cotton manufacturing, tobacco processing, fisheries, and beaver dams, with individual plates of bison, wolverines, porcupines, penguins, Brazilian monkeys, and numerous birds. There are scenes of Barbados, Jamaica, New England, Hudson's Bay, Newfoundland, the Great Lakes, Santo Domingo, Florida, Havana, Lima, Acapulco, Santiago, Boston, New York, Niagara Falls, Quebec, and much more. Some occasional light spotting or browning, short repaired tears in pp. v-vii in Vol. I; some maps strengthened with linen at folds; despite these minor faults, this copy is overall in fresh condition both internally and externally. PROVENANCE: Professor Bombicci with his letterpress book-labels on title-pages of each volume. Luigi Bombicci (1833-1903), the renowned mineralogist, was the director and curator of the Museum of Mineralogy attached to the University of Bologna, and the author of over 200 works on the physical sciences.         Rare document includes both the signatures of "The Father of New Hampshire," Meshech Weare, and his wife, Mehitable as witnesses to a land transaction

Manuscript Document Signed, ?Meshech Weare?, ?Mehitable Weare? and ?Benjamin French?, 1p., approximately 7.5? x 12?. New Hampshire, February 18, 1763. Partial split at folds and small portion of text loss not near signatures, else good condition with dark, bold signatures and remnants of original wax seal. Weare was elected first president of New Hampshire in 1784. Often called "The Father of New Hampshire", Weare was active in New Hampshire politics for many years. Between 1739 and 1776, Weare served as selectman and representative for Hampton Falls in the New Hampshire House of Representatives, its speaker and clerk, as well as one of New Hampshire?s delegates to the Albany Congress in 1754. As a prominent political figure, he was asked to witness the signing of important transactions, such as this one. Women were not usually asked to bear witness to documents in the eighteenth century, thus the signature of his wife beneath his, as witness, is rare. The land was sold to an ?Abner Philbrick of Hampton? for ?the sum of Three Hundred and Ten Pounds old Tenor of New Hampshire?, quite a sizable sum in that day. The town in which the Weare?s land is located, Hampton Falls, was officially incorporated in 1726, however most referred to it as a parish until 1835. The plot of land next to the Weare?s house is now the site of a park.

Abraham Ferweda [vol. 1]; . en Gerrit Tresling [vols. 2-3], Leeuwarden 1763 - (13 7/8 x 9 7/8 inches). Titles with a typographic border printed in red, engraved arms on the dedication. 39 hand-coloured plates engraved by Jan C. Philips or Jacob Folkema after Knoop. Contemporary speckled calf, spines with raised bands in seven compartments, bands tooled in gilt, red morocco lettering piece in the second compartment, the others with a repeat decoration in gilt, red stained edges A lovely set of the first editions of Knoop's fruit monographs: "among the earliest books on the subject to be illustrated with coloured plates" (Oak Spring Pomona). Knoop served as the head gardener to the Dowager Princess of Orange et Marienburg, near Leeuwarden. "[His] fruit monographs, apples and pears in the first, plums, peaches, cherries, nuts and soft fruit in the second, are among the earliest books on the subject to be illustrated with coloured plates, the Pomologia ones packed with a dozen or so varieties, each with a label giving its time of ripening . As descriptive records of varieties of fruit in cultivation, observed by a dedicated and scientific gardener late in his career, they are often cited by later authors" (Oak Spring Pomona). In all, Knoop published four monographs in the series, three of which are found here, with the fourth on herbs and vegetables being published in 1769 over a decade after the first part. Raphael notes that "the last part is very rare and most sets lack this final section on the contents of the kitchen garden." The plates, based on Knoop's own drawings, are made up as follows: in the first work are 12 plates of apples showing 103 varieties; 8 of pears showing 82 varieties. The plates in the second work include one plate with 2 quince varieties; 3 varieties of cherry on one plate; 3 varieties of plum on one plate; 1 apricot, 1 peach, 1 almond, 1 fig, each on a single plate; 2 grapes on one plate; 1 chestnut, 1 walnut, 1 hazelnut, 1 medlar, 1 mulberry, 1 raspberry, 1 blackberry, each on a single plate; 3 currants on one plate; 1 gooseberry, 1 unidentified fruit tree, 1 cornelian cherry, each on a single plate. No illustrations appear in the third part concerning trees. Stafleu & Cowan TL2 3766, 3767 & 3768; Oak Spring Pomona , p. 131. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Complete with Errata leaf, which follows Table of Contents. Does not contain the map, of which most historians agree "map generally missing and probably not inserted in all copies". Overall condition is near fine.Another translation of Father Charlevoix's letters, in two volumes, which first appeared in English in 1761 as Journal of a Voyage to North America and one other and A Voyage to North-America (Dublin: 1766) Provenance: Signed by Englishman "John Cartwright", with scattered text notations and corrections apparently in his hand in contemporary brown ink. Cartwright (1740-1824) was a naval officer, political reformer and pamphleteer, who refused to serve against the American colonies. In 1774, he published "Letters on American Independence" siding against colonial taxation. Additionally, the volume is signed by Charles James Fox (1749-1806), noted English statesman, member of Parliment and orator who was also against the British forces and in strong support of the American colonies. Fox has pencilled his opinions regarding the valiant efforts of Cartwright on the free pages of this volume. Giving an Account of a Voyage to Canada, and Travels through that vast Country, and Louisiana, to the Gulf of Mexico Undertaken by Order of the Present King of France In the era that these letters were written, it was very common-place for the clergy to be under the support of one or more of the nobility who acted as sponsors and correspondents for the venturing missionary priest. That was the arrangement between Charlevoix and the Dutchess. His letters to her were lengthy and very complete in detail. While Canada was a vast and only mildly settled area under the tutelege of the Hudson's Bay Company, the "Louisiana" referred to in this title actually covered almost the complete half of American North America west of the Mississippi River. This land, almost totally unexplored and unsettled, was eventually to become the Louisiana Purchase and would be criss-crossed by the likes of Alexander Henry The Younger from 1799 to 1814 and the well recognized expedition of Lewis and Clark in 1804-06 with many additional trapper and hunter forays into the Great Plains and Indian Country. Charlevoix was the first writer and traveller who describes the interior areas of America. This is the early translation of Charlevoix's Journal d'un Voyage, which was first published in 1744 as the third volume of his Histoire de la Nouvelle France; however it does not include the Preliminary Discourse and excludes the first letter which describes his voyage from Orleans to Rochefort, commencing instead with the longer voyage from Rochelle to Quebec.
