Institutiones Juris Naturae et Gentium, In Quibus ex Ipsa Hominis...

1763. Wolff Summarizes His Classic Work on International Law Wolff, Christian, Frieherr von [1679-1754]. Institutiones Juris Naturae et Gentium, In Quibus ex Ipsa Hominis Natura Continuo Nexu Omnes Obligationes et Jura Omnia Deducuntur. Halle: Prostat in Officina Rengeriana, 1763. [xxxii], 774, [36] pp. Final leaf, a blank, lacking. Octavo (6-3/4" x 4"). Contemporary vellum, gilt title to spine, edges rouged. Light soiling and a few minor stains, minor wear to corners, spine ends bumped, front and rear endleaves lacking. Title page printed in red and black, woodcut head and tail-pieces. Light browning to text, faint dampspotting to a few leaves. Early owner signatures to front pastedown, early underlining to a few passages, interior otherwise clean. * Fifth edition. To quote Quincy Wright, "Christian Wolff was perhaps the most influential writer on international law of the eighteenth century. His influence flowed not only from his reputation in other fields - mathematics, philosophy and theology - from the voluminousness of his writings, from the notoriety of his philosophical controversies, but also from the logic, completeness and definiteness of his treatise on international law, first published in 1749, as the ninth volume of his Jus Naturae et Gentium [1740-1749]. A major work on its jurisprudence and basis in the law of nature, it is an important document of Enlightenment-era legal theory and an undisputed classic in its field. As Wolff recognized, it is also a rather daunting work, which prompted him to produced the Institutiones, an introductory guide and summary of his larger work. A well-received work that was soon translated into French and German, it went though several editions. All are rather scarce, however. OCLC locates 2 copies of the fifth edition in North America (at Brown and Cornell Universities). Wright, American Journal of International Law 29/3 (July 1935) 552-554. This edition not in the British Museum Catalogue..

A History Of The Military Transactions Of The British Nation In Indostan, From The Year MDCCXLV. To Which Is Prefixed A Dissertation On The Establishments Made By Mahomedan Conquerors In Indostan.

London: Printed for John Nourse, 1763-78. - 2 Volumes in 3. 4to. pp. 2 p.l., 415, [1]errata & directions to binder; 1 p.l., 365; 1 p.l., [367]-739, [3]errata & directions to binder. 32 engraved maps & plans (25 folding) & 4 folding engraved plates. A fine set in contemporary calf, rebacked preserving spine labels. First Edition. A work of enormous detail based on Orme’s years with the East India Company as writer, historiographer and member of the Council of Madras, and still essential today for the depth of its account of the Indian campaigns. The son of a British East India Company physician and surgeon, Orme himself entered the service of the Company in 1743 at the age of fifteen, five years later rising to the position of Factor. As a member of the Madras Council from 1755 to 1758 he played a vigorous part in crushing the French power in the Deccan, and was largely responsible for the appointment of Lord Clive to command the retaking of Calcutta against Suraj-ud-Dowlah. Retiring for health reasons, Orme returned to England in 1759 and began work on his history, the publication of the first volume of which earned him the position of historiographer to the Company. Macauley praises Orme in his essay on Clive as "inferior to no English historian in style and power of painting." Cox I 297. [Attributes: First Edition]

Fine. S.n., à Amsterdam 1763-1766-1769, in-12 (9,5x17cm), 18 volumes reliés. - New edition, and probably the first in-4 that brings together three stories published between 1760 and 1765.Traduction Ms. Belot, described by the author himself. Full sheepskin marbled time. Back to nerves decorated with nets. Piece blue morocco title and volume number of brown morocco. Scuffs in caps tail of six volumes. Some gaps on the boards, due to galleries and to the last nerve of Volume I. Border lower flat bare half a cm. Good copy, however, very fresh. The History of England is undoubtedly the most popular work and was a great success of the philosopher David Hume, the father of philosophical empiricism and its importance in the history of philosophy is the measure of Descartes France. The story could not but interest the philosopher effect since it is an unparalleled amount of experience, as such, it is a must for those seeking knowledge; the historian is an empiricist, since can not simply perceive the causal links between facts and events, it is constrained in its vision to design a movement. However, for Hume, there is no way to conceptualize the history and structure typically follows the chronology of events, it is a story provided detailed and England, which extends from the arrival of the Romans in Revolution of 1688; it is divided into three historic and dynastic contemporary: the house of Plantagenet, the Stuarts and the Tudors. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate.

Together with all the Papers relative to the Confinement and Enlargement of Mr. Wilkes. With many other curious Particulars. Vol. I [-III].

vols. i & ii Dublin: Printed by J. Potts vol. iii London: Printed by especial appointment for E. Sumpter. And Dublin: Re-printed and sold by the Booksellers 1763 - 3 vols., pp. [i], 195; [i], 173, 33, [1, ads]; [i], 195, 12mo, contemporary calf backed marbled boards, red lettering pieces, numbered in gilt direct, very good. A very pretty set. ESTC has three entries for Dublin 1763 editions, one for the first 2 vols., another for the third vol. alone, and another entry for the second edition (all three vols., T181842), this last noting that in the third volume the imprint reads: 'Lnodon [sic]: printed by especial appointment for E. Sumpter' &c. In this edition 'London' vs. 'Lnodon' is a variant, and is here spelt correctly. The North Briton was 'founded on 5 June 1762 to attack the new ministry of George III's Scottish favourite, Lord Bute . When Bute resigned on 8 April 1763 he was succeeded as prime minister by George Grenville, who had broken with Pitt and Temple in 1761. Wilkes momentarily held his fire, but when Grenville ended the parliamentary session by a king's speech commending the peace, North Briton no. 45 on 23 April denounced the "ministerial effrontery" of obliging George III "to give the sanction of his sacred name" to such "odious" measures and "unjustifiable" declarations. Immediate prosecution of the paper for seditious libel ensued' (ODNB). (ESTC T195003 & N19482)

1763 - Curious Mexican work on the origin of men in America. 1763. Mexico. In 8vo (197 mm x 140 mm). 22 ff. + 72 pp. Contemporary calf, possibly Mexican. A fine copy, in it´s entirely genuine condition. First edition. A very curious Mexican imprint dealing on the issue of the population of the Americas, both of men and animals, how they reached it and their settling. The work is written by the Alexo de Orrio (1715 – 1763), a Jesuit philosopher and writer, “The question of the origin of the American Indian had been of great concern to Spanish theologians from the early days of the conquest until well into the period of the Enlightenment, and Father Orrio’s Solucion continued the tradition of thought that had developed from the great Las Casas-Sepulveda debates of the middle of the sixteenth century” (Howell). Orrio was not alone in his search of the origin and population of the Americas, the subject had been long discussed by other before him, and remained the subject of investigation well into the 20th century; the same subject had been investigated by others as Rocha in his “Tratado unico, y singular del origen de los Indios Occidentales del Piru, Mexico, Santa Fe, y Chile” (1681), speculating to the American natives Jewish ancestry. The last copy we have been able to trace in the market was the one offered by Howell in 1980, for 525 $. Orrio also authored the Breve noticia de las fiestas enq ue la muy ilustre ciudad de Zacatecas explico su agradecimiento en la confirmacion del patronato de Nra. Sra. de Guadalupe. Sabin, 750. Decorative initials. In 1743, Christoph Saur (1693-1758), printed the first Bible in a European language (German) in America. 1,200 copies were printed in Germantown, Pennsylvania. Twenty years later, in 1763, a second edition of 2,000 copies (our copy) was printed by Saur's son Christoph (1721-1784). This was the first Bible printed in America on American-made paper. A third edition appeared in 1776 (3,000 copies), which was the first Bible printed from American-made type (see Darlow & Moule 4240). Spine and covers rubbed. One clasp missing. Front free endpaper detached but present. Back hinge starting. Upper margin of pages trimmed with sporadic and minor loss of captions. Title page darkened, and slightly foxed and chipped at corners. Title, Foreword, and first page remargined. Pages 36-48, 77-79 (Old Testament), remargined with loss of printed text replaced by previous owner's handwriten text. Page 697/698 (Old Testament), and 273/274 (New Testament) repaired with non abrasive tape (with minor loss of text). Page 275/276 (New Testament) remargined, with minor loss of text. Moderate to heavy age-toning and foxing throughout. Sporadic minor to moderate water-staining throughout. Text in German, gothic script. Binding and interior in overall fair condition. About the publisher: Christoph Saur II (1721-1784) became an elder in the Dunkers (modern Church of the Brethren) and would neither take an oath or bear arms. During the American Revolutionary War, Saur was arrested as a spy and, despite the long feud of the Saurs with Muhlenberg, appealed to General Peter Muhlenberg, the son of the pastor. Peter Muhlenberg (1746-1787) interceded with Washington and saved his life. At the end of the Revolutionary War, the pacifist Saur was treated poorly. His neighbors seized his property. Saur ended his life in poverty, earning income by binding books. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

A report of some proceedings on the commission of oyer and terminer and gaol delivery for the trial of the rebels in the year 1746 in the county of Surry [sic], and of other Crown cases. To which are added discourses upon a few branches of the Crown law

Dublin: Printed for Sarah Cotter 8vo (20.3 cm, 8"). xii, 412, [16] pp.. 1763 First Irish edition, following the Oxford first of the preceding year: one of the most authoritative and scholarly of such reports of the time, accompanied by examinations of treason, homicide, accessories, the writings of Lord Hale, etc. Cotter's printing seems to have appeared in two variants, as per ESTC; in the present example, the catchword on p. 406 is "to." Cotter was the daughter of Joseph Cotter and successor to his printing business. She was active from 1757 to 1767 and published/printed law, technical and religious books, belle lettres, and a wide variety of other productions. The trial mentioned in the title refers to that of those arrested for participation in the Jacobite rising of 1745, an attempt by "Bonnie Prince Charlie" (i.e., Charles Edward Stuart) to regain the British throne. (He had timed his effort for a moment when much of the British military was occupied on the continent by the War of the Austrian Succession.) Contemporary speckled calf, rebacked, spine with gilt-stamped leather title-label and blind-tooled tulip decorations between raised bands; hinges (inside) reinforced. Front pastedown and free endpaper each with one small early inked annotation (shelf and price?); first and last few leaves with offsetting to margins; pages generally mildly age-toned with a very few scattered light spots.

S.n. 1763 - - S.n., A Amsterdam 1763-1766-1769, in-12 (9,5x17cm), 18 volumes reliés. [AUTOMATIC ENGLISH TRANSLATION FOLLOWS] New edition, and probably the first in-4 that brings together three stories published between 1760 and 1765.Traduction Ms.
