xx (i.e. xxiv), 448, 59 pp. 8vo, cont. mottled sheep (head of spine & corners a little worn, minor rubbing), spine nicely gilt, red morocco lettering piece on spine, arms in gilt on each cover of Guillaume-Gabriel Pavée de Vendeuvre (see below). Paris: Pissot & Gogue, 1763. An important sale catalogue of the library of the Maison Professe des Jesuites of Paris, founded in 1580. This library was comprised of many donations, the most notable being that of Pierre Daniel Huet (1630-1721), bishop of Avranches and scholar. Huet, whose scholarship was very well-known, made considerable scientific researches as well as classical studies; he edited the famous Delphin series of the Latin classics in about sixty volumes. Huet formed a great library of books and MSS. which he donated to this Jesuit house upon his death. When the Jesuits were expelled from France in 1762, the entire library of the house was offered for sale by auction. However, Huet's books were withdrawn before the sale due to the terms of his donation and were given by his heir to the Royal Library in 1765. This was one of the best and most complete Jesuit libraries in France. It numbered 30,000 volumes in 1754 (this sale catalogue has 7252 lots). It must be noted that this catalogue gives us the best idea of the contents of Huet's great collection. Very good copy. It lacks one of the two unnumbered pages following the preliminary leaves and the final six leaves, which are not present in most copies, listing the withdrawn books. However, bound-in at the end is the 8-page schedule of the sale of the Louis-le-Grand library, sold in the following year (I haven't seen this before). Guillaume-Gabriel Pavée de Vendeuvre (1779-1870), a native of Troyes, served as deputy in the French National Assembly for many years. ? Blogie col. 9. Grolier Club, Printed Catalogues of French Book Auctions...1643-1830, 181. Peignot, p. 106. Taylor, Book Catalogues, p. 64.

Buisson, Dictionnaire de pédagogie, I, 1039.

Of the Imitation of Christ: In Three Books. With the Book of the Sacrament. Translated from the Latin of Thomas a Kempis by John Payne.

n.p.. Hardcover. B01N0EE9V5 Rare first edition of this translation, with bookplate of then 'proprietor' of Pennsylvania Thomas Penn (son of founder William Penn). 1763 first edition of this translation, n.p. (London), 5 1/4 x 8 1/8 inches tall full leather bound, gilt-ruled boards, four raised bands and elaborate gilt tooling to spine, title to gilt-lettered burgundy leather label and year gilt stamped to bottom panel, all page edges yellow, marbled endpapers, [2], xlii, [12], 382 pp. Recently rebacked employing the original leather boards, which are moderately rubbed and edgeworn. Prior owner name in pencil from either 1783 or 1883 to top margin of blank front free-endpaper. On the verso of the title page is the bookplate of the book's first owner, Thomas Penn (1702 - 1775), a son of William Penn, founder of the Province of Pennsylvania, the English North American colony that became the U.S. state of Pennsylvania. A few scattered instances of mild marginal foxing. Otherwise, a very good copy - clean, bright and unmarked - with a fascinating provenance, in a binding with an exquisite shelf appearance. ~LR1~ The first edition of the much-reprinted John Payne English translation of The Imitation of Christ (De Imitatione Christi in Latin). The English Short Title Catalog (T93912) locates only 14 copies of this edition at institutions worldwide - seven in England and seven in America. The prior owner of this copy, Thomas Penn, inherited the position of Proprietor of the Colony of Pennsylvania for the Crown of England in 1718 along with his brothers John and Richard on the death of their father William Penn, until 1746 when John died. Thomas continued as the Proprietor with Richard's son, John, and his own son John Penn until 1775. He tried to bring his family out of the debt that had plagued his father. He asserted his independence from the Quakers, and tried to assert his control of the colony almost as a feudal lord. His bookplate, much prized by collectors, is an adaptation of the plate his father used, with the family coat of arms and motto, Dum Clavum Teneam ('While I hold the tiller,' an adaptation of a phrase from Quintilian), and reads 'of Stoke Pogeis in the County of Bucks, first proprietor of Pensilvania [sic]' - except either on the bookplate or the copper plate which produced it, the word 'first' has been deleted, likely because it was used to mean 'chief' proprietor but found confusing to some, since Thomas took the office from his father, William. About this translation: In the first paragraph of the 39-page translator's preface, John Payne explains that he hoped to do 'some justice to the sense of the Original; which is almost lost in the loose paraphrase of Dean Stanhope [referring to Anglican George Stanhope's often reprinted 1698 English translation], and almost deprived of its spirit by the literal and inelegant exactness of others. Payne's translation uses the King James Version wording for scriptural quotations within the work, rather than the Vulgate edition of the Bible available to a Kempis in the fifteenth century. And Payne has edited out much from the original which he found overly 'monkish' or 'popish,' including substituting for the original Book 4 - dealing with the Roman Catholic Mass - a work which Payne here calls 'The Book of the Sacrament.' About the original author: The Imitation of Christ was written by Catholic monk Thomas a Kempis (circa 1380-1471), as four separate books completed between 1420 and 1427, at Mount Saint Agnes monastery, in the town of Windesheim, located in what is now the Netherlands. He wrote these works for the instruction of novices of his Augustinian monastic order, followers of Geert Groote's Brethren of the Common Life. But the writings quickly became popular among all the literate faithful. There is probably no other book apart from the Bible which has been printed in so many editions and translations. . Very Good. 1763. First Edition.

(Grente). Cioranescu 38657. Cohen 614.

The author, a French Botanist (1710-1795), takes the best parts of previous treatises, adds the knowledge of farmers specifically dedicated to grow this type of tree, especially in some cantons of the Languedoque and approaches mainly the following five areas: the land, the plant nurseries, the planting of big mulberry trees, the planting of mulberry bushes, the grafting and the pruning. This work can be framed within the context of the interest for the improvement of working methods in agriculture, serving as a base for the development of the textile industry, in an environment of a growing widening of scientific knowledge. Ottimo esemplare. ''.in his celebrated L'ècole des armes, published in 1763, he has left us a record of his method of instruction. Angelo begins the tratise by advising his reader how to select a sword. Then he distinguishes between the weak and the strong of the blade. In retrospect Angelo's method of instruction was a blend of the Italian and French schools, and as such was a forerunner of Alberto Marchionni's mixed school'' (Gaugler, pp. 61-69). Gelli, p. 22.

[ii], 266, 300, 48 pp. 56 plates (of fish, etc.). Contemporary half calf over speckled boards. Spine with five raised bands. Gilt title.= Rare and very well illustrated work on the history of Dutch trade, and government, and the natural history of the former Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia). The latter part contains faithful reproductions of the fish and other marine life of Valentyn (53 plates with 477 different species of fish, and five [three folded] plates with crustaceans, one folded plate with Mantodea and mammals, one with mammals and reptiles, and one with birds, including birds of paradise), and the illustrations of trees and herbs, mostly from the Hortus malabaricus, including the pine-apple, coconut palm, mango, pepper, etc.. The former part has the portraits of all the Dutch governors of the colony, including Pieter Both, Laurent Reaal, Jan Pietersz. Coen, Anton van Diemen and Karel Reniersz, to name a few, as well as plans, maps, and views of several islands and settlements, including many of the capital, Batavia (now part of Jakarta). One plate is a text written in Singhalese. The last 31 pages are titled "Considerations sur l'etat present de la compagnie Hollandoise des Indes Orientales, rélativement à sa navigation, à son commerce & à son gouvernement; & sur les moyens de remédier aux causes de sa décadence", written by Mr. Gustave Guillaume Baron d'Imhoff, ci-devant Gouverneur-Général, pour la Compagnie aux Indes Orientales. This work is dated 24 novembre 1741. This is one of the rarest parts of Prévost's "Histoire générale des voyages" and complete in itself. Prevost's name, however, is nowhere to be found. There are several similar-titled works, dealing with other Dutch travels in the region, but none contains such a great number of natural history plates. Boards and spine rubbed, hinges starting, gilt lettering abraded. Some leaves a bit age-toned, few spots, otherwise a very good clean and complete copy. Dean III, p. 303; Sabin, 65404; Tiele, 103 (volume XX of the Dutch edition).

The Republic of Plato. In Ten Books. Translated from the Greek by H. Spens. With a Preliminary Discourse Concerning the Philosophy of the Ancients by the Translator

Glasgow: Robert & Andrew Foulis, 1763. First edition in English, presentation copy, of Plato's Republic, translated by Scottish classicist Henry Spens "to stir up the youth to the study of the Ancients," and published by the Foulis brothers at the University of Glasgow. In the most influential of Plato's dialogues, Socrates leads a debate on the character of the just city and the just man. The allegory of the cave in Book VII, which dramatizes the possibilities and limits of enlightenment, remains a touchstone for educators: "when at any time he sees one in confusion, and unable to perceive any thing, he will not laugh in an unreasonable manner, but will consider, whether the soul, coming from a more enlightened life, be darkened by ignorance, or going from prevailing ignorance, to a life more enlightened, be filled with the dazzling splendor, and so will congratulate the one on its fate and life, and compassionate the life and fate of the other." Spens's translation, although eclipsed by Thomas Taylor's collected edition of 1804, was revived in the twentieth century in the Everyman's Library series of pocket classics. The recipient of this copy, George Dempster of Dunnichen (1732-1818), was a member of Parliament who moved in the same Scottish Enlightenment circles as David Hume, Adam Ferguson, William Robertson, and James Boswell. PMM 27, Gaskell 423. A handsome presentation copy of a landmark in Western philosophy. Quarto, contemporary calf, boards ruled in gilt with decorative cornerpieces, rebacked with original spine laid down, spine compartments elaborately decorated in gilt, red morocco spine label lettered in gilt, marbled endpapers. Complete with final leaf of publisher's advertisements. Bookplate of Dunnichen Library to front pastedown, shelfmarks to front fly leaf, inscriptions reading "From the Author to G. Dempster / 18th Nov 1784" (pencil) and "From the Author to George Dempster / 18th Nov 1784" (ink) on second front fly leaf. Closed tear to second front fly leaf, expertly mended.

Paris: Bellin, Nicolas, 1763. unbound. Map. Copper plate engraving. Original outline hand color. Image measures 18" x 12". This fine antique chart of the Western Hemisphere was issued by Bellin in 1763. It presents North America and South America in exceptional detail, noting place names, rivers, islands, and notes on discoveries. Elevation is beautifully rendered and scale notations are in English and French.

The map notes the location of the Sea of the West or the Mer de l'Ouest, but does not actually depict the Sea. The map also includes several notations regarding the Northwest Passage and the discoveries of Admiral de Fonte.

The map includes a beautiful compass rose and a rococo style title cartouche. In good condition with minor foxing and minor wear along folds. Original plate mark is visible.

Jacques Nicolas Bellin (1703-1772), was the official hydrographer to the French king and the first person to hold the title of "Ingénieur de la Marine of the Depot des cartes et plans de la Marine" (chief engineer of the French Hydrographical Office).

A form of prayer, and A New Collection of Psalmes, for the use of a congregation of Protestant Dissenters in liverpool

[London]: Printed for the society; and sold by Chr, Henderson....and by John Sibbald, Bookseller, in Liverpool, 1763. Two works bound as one, as issued. [4], 96, [20]. [Bound with:] [PSALTER]. A new collection of psalms, For the Use of a Congregation of Protestant Dissenters in Liverpool. [London]. Printed for the society..., 1763. [2], 165pp, [7]. Quarto. Finely bound in contemporary black morocco gilt, with elaborate gilt decoration, including detailed board centre-pieces and two separate bird devices. A.E.G, marbled endpapers. The very slightest of rubbing to extremities, occasional mark internally, else a fine and crisp copy. Preserved in a modern cloth folding-box. Signature I misbound, with early ink inscriptions instructing the reader to read in the correct order. Contemporary ink inscription of R. Pilkington and later inscriptions of the Pilkington/Holland family to blank fly-leaf. A beautiful copy of the first edition of an experimental non-conformist liturgy for the Octogon Chapel, Liverpool. Composed by Philip Holland and Richard Godwin, it was edited by rector of the nearby Warrington Academy John Sedding. The work is a rare example of the formalisation of a non-sectarian liturgy amongst dissenters, and despite attracting a readership including Thomas Jefferson (who owned an octavo version of this work and referenced the Psalter in vaguely positive terms in correspondence with John Adams) proved typically divisive even within the congregation of the Octogon chapel. Produced in both octavo and quarto settings, this larger version is far scarcer, with ESTC locating copies in only four British libraries (BL, Congregational, Dr. Williams', NLW) and just three elsewhere (Dalhousie, Huntington and Union Theological Seminary). ESTC T148701.. First edition.

1763. 8vo. XVI, 272 pp. Contemp. Italian paper-covered marbled soft paste boards. Edges sprinkled red. First edition of an interesting look at German artistic and cultural life in Munich and Dresden through the eyes of a cultured Italian. He also acted as the King's art agent, taking over his role from Algarotti. Bianconi counted Canaletto and Mengs among his friend and was especially close to Winckelmann, whom he introduced into Italian connoisseur circles when Winckelman travelled to Italy for the first time in 1755. - Top of spine a little worn but sound.

GOOD COPY. PICTURES AND MORE DETAILS ON REQUEST.

Yamato eyoshu [trans.: Collection of Traditional Japanese-style Wood Carving Patterns].

Numerous woodcuts in the text, mostly full-page. Four vols. Large 8vo, orig. blue wrappers (some mostly marginal worming) bound in orihon style (accordion), block-printed title labels on each upper cover. Tokyo: Suharaya Mohe, 1763. First edition of this important and handsomely illustrated work on Japanese-style wood-carved motifs and patterns which stem from the "Tachikawa [or Tatekawa] Ryu" school of design, decoration, and building techniques. Tachikawa (active 1763-71), a master carpenter who lived in Tokyo, focused on the taisha-zukuri (or oyashiro-zukuri), which is the oldest Shinto shrine style. The handsome woodcuts depict a series of small motifs and larger designs for carvings on pillars, rafters, gables, and other structural elements of a shrine or house. The book, printed in the orihon style, allows for the consecutive pages to be laid out for multi-page overhead schematic views. Most of the woodcuts are highlighted by hand in red as guides for correct proportions and placement of ornaments. Very good set and very rare. Occasional stains. .
