*****. In-8.         A Description of Ventilators: whereby Great Quantities of Fresh Air May with Ease be Conveyed into Mines, Goals [sic.], Hospitals, Work-Houses and Ships, In Exchange for their Noxious Air.

London: W. Innys, R. Manby, T. Woodward, 1763. Two volumes, octavo, five folding plates, contemporary speckled calf. First edition: Hales' ventilators became known as "ship's lungs", and were so appreciated by eighteenth-century sailors, and contributed so significantly to an improvement in seaboard conditions, that captains reported the crews needed little encouragement to work the machines. After a leisurely twelve years in residence at Cambridge, Hales (1677-1761) took up a parish and became heavily involved in local affairs, but this did not preclude him from a long and productive scientific career. His continuing fame was assured with these two books, which effectively invented artificial ventilation. Designed to draw fresh air into confined spaces, his machines were installed in His Majesty's ships, merchant vessels, slave ships, in hospitals, even at the court of King's Bench, the Drury Lane Theatre and Newgate Prison. As a result, there was a marked improvement in mortality rates, even among French prisoners-of-war held in English gaols, which led Hales to quip that he hoped none would accuse him of corresponding with the enemy. He was a pioneer in public health, a role that he apparently considered a vocation: his friend Gilbert White commented that Hales could barely be restrained from offering unsolicited advice to friends and acquaintances, his wide-ranging mind capable of discoursing endlessly on the perils of encrusted tea-kettles or on the best methods of maintaining the keels of boats to passing ferrymen. White records one particularly endearing act of benevolence, commenting that he once spotted Hales busy painting white the 'tops of the foot-path posts, that his neighbours might not be injured by running against them in the dark' (DNB). Hales was elected a fellow of the Royal Society in 1718. Some very light browning and two plates bound in upside down; a good set in contemporary speckled calf, a little chipped at spine, hinges starting but firm.

In retrospect Angelo's method of instruction was a blend of the Italian and French schools, and as such was a forerunner of Alberto Marchionni's mixed school'' (Gaugler, pp. 61-69).

First edition of the works of Charles - François Pannard, or Panard, (Courville - sur - Eure 1689 - Paris 1765), french prolific writer, poet, chansonnier, dramatist, and goguette writer. Considered as one of the propagators of vaudeville and song in France. Marmontel gave him the name "La Fontaine of vaudeville". Pannard, just like Jean de La Fontaine, didn't care about his financial situation ; he lived and died a poor man. He wrote more than 80 plays, which more famous are : Le Tour de Carnaval, Les Acteurs déplacés, Les Fêtes sincères, Le Fleuve Scamandre, Zéphir et Fleurette (Firmin Didot Frères, Nouvelle biographie générale, 39, 125).         De sede inferni in terris quaerenda

ex typographia Remondiniana. first edition. Vellum full time, with smooth back piece as beige. Italian binding. Nice copy on 2 columns. Giovanne Patuzzi Vincenzo (1700-1769) was an Italian writer, this strange book is devoted to the geographical location and physical description of Hell. After reviewing several assumptions, in particular that of Swinden, the author gives his own. References to Gallileo, Copernicus are many, the book definitely looking for a more credible scientific. The first part of the volume is a refutation of the theory that Hell is located in the sun itself. The author, who believed his true location was underground, develops throughout the work of many scientific arguments relating to astronomy, with the calculation of the number of the damned can be contained in a sphere like the sun , volcanoes, etc.. Loss of Caillet and Dorbon. and the catalog of the BN as well as most major catalogies (British Library, Italian catalogs?).

S.n.. New edition, and probably the first in-4 that brings together three stories published between 1760 and 1765.Traduction Ms. Belot, described by the author himself. Full sheepskin marbled time. Back to nerves decorated with nets. Piece blue morocco title and volume number of brown morocco. Scuffs in caps tail of six volumes. Some gaps on the boards, due to galleries and to the last nerve of Volume I. Border lower flat bare half a cm. Good copy, however, very fresh. The History of England is undoubtedly the most popular work and was a great success of the philosopher David Hume, the father of philosophical empiricism and its importance in the history of philosophy is the measure of Descartes France. The story could not but interest the philosopher effect since it is an unparalleled amount of experience, as such, it is a must for those seeking knowledge; the historian is an empiricist, since can not simply perceive the causal links between facts and events, it is constrained in its vision to design a movement. However, for Hume, there is no way to conceptualize the history and structure typically follows the chronology of events, it is a story provided detailed and England, which extends from the arrival of the Romans in Revolution of 1688; it is divided into three historic and dynastic contemporary: the house of Plantagenet, the Stuarts and the Tudors. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate.         The Elements of Geometry. In which, The principal Propositions of Euclid, Archimedes, and others, are demonstrated after the most easy manner. To which is added, A Collection of useful Geometrical Problems. [bound with] The Doctrine of Proportion, Arithmetical and Geometrical. Together with a general Method of arguing by proportional Quantities.

First Edition London Printed for J. Nourse, Bookseller in Ordinary to his Majesty 1763 First Edition. 8vo; viii,183, [1]; iv,32 pp, with 296 geometrical figures and perspective designs on 14 folding engraved plates. Prefaces to both titles signed: W. Emerson. Contemporary full leather, the spine ribbed and divided into six compartments with a red morocco lettering piece stamped in gilt in the second. A Very Good or better copy, the front hinge skillfully (and almost invisibly) reinforced, the pages and plates free of stains and foxing, save for the first 10 leaves of the first book, which have been professionally restored on the top inner edge (with no loss of text) where they were worm eaten. Both First Editions of elementary works on geometry and perspective, the first divided into eight books. Both works start with definitions, axioms, and postulates, followed by numerous problems (keyed into the 296 figures, in the case of the first book) and their solutions. ESTC Citation Nos. T77181 and T77180. Very GoodLike his fellow County Durham savant John Bird, the astronomer and instrument designer, Emerson makes a fictional appearance in Thomas Pynchon's 'Mason and Dixon.' He was the very archetype of the English eccentric: According to onAge of Enlightenmente account, Emerson dressed in old clothes and his manners were uncouth. He wore his shirt back to front and his legs wrapped in sacking so as not to scorch them as he sat over the fire. He complained about the expense of all the candles he had used during a lifetime studying mathematics, mechanics (he apparently never advanced a proposition he had not tested, nor published an invention without first proving its effects by a model) and music, including the theory of sounds and the ancient and modern scales. He died on 20 May 1782 at his small estate in Weardale, where his gravestone bears epitaphs in Latin and Hebrew.

Contemporary glazed plain paper boards, red sprinkled edges (binding soiled and a little worn, corners bumped). Text only little age-toned, very minor spotting in places. Provenance: undeciphered inscriptions on endpapers; 19th-century armorial bookplate "Bibliotheca SeckendorWana" to front pastedown. A good fresh and unmarked copy. ----Euler Archive 149A. First edition in German and the only separate edition, a translation of Réflexions sur l'éspace et le tems, Mémoires de l'académie des sciences de Berlin 4 (1750), p.324-33. "Euler outlays his views on the relation between Metaphysics and Mechanics. The truths of mechanics are "so indubitably constant" that they must be founded in the natures of bodies. Metaphysics is the study of the nature of bodies, therefore the laws of Mechanics constrain Metaphysical theories. In fact, any Metaphysical idea or conclusion corresponding to a Mechanical one must agree in all its implications with Mechanics. This applies in particular to space and time. Real, absolute, space and time are assumed by the laws of Mechanics. Therefore, Metaphysical arguments for the unreality of space and time must be unfounded and 'hide some parlogism'." (The Euler Archive: http://www.math.dartmouth.edu/~euler/). (R. Gaskell, Books from the Library of Walter Pagel, Pt. II, 53). This edition is exceedingly rare. OCLC/Worldcat lists no copies in US libraries and only two copies outside Germany (Swiss libraries). Very Good.

Contemporary vellum, title in gilt on spine. Some foxing, head of spine a little worn. Provenance: bookplate Charles Atwood Kofoid (American Zoologist); George Wilbraham of Delamere House, Northwich Cheshire (bookplate); Verne Roberts, Bibliotheca Mechanica (bookplate) and Andreas Gedeon. (bookplate), Christie's sale 5442, April 23, 2008. ---Riccardi I/1, 180; Honeyman Coll. 428; Roller-G. I, 146; de Backer-S. I, 1841; see PMM 203 and Norman 277 for 1st edition. - Third (first Venetian) edition of Boscovich's fundamental work in the history of scientific thought, a precursor of modern atomic theory by the eminent Dalmatian Jesuit mathematician and polymath. "Boskovich's theory influenced the position of nineteenth-century field physics with regard to the relations between space and matter; it was employed by Faraday and Kelvin, and J. J. Thomson used its curve of forces to introduce the earliest concepts of atomic physics" (Norman). The bookplate of Charles Atwood Kofoid (1865-1947) is interesting; there are planktonic organisms about to be hauled into the plankton net being towed by the research vessel. Kofoid was born in Illinois in 1865, did his undergraduate work at Oberlin College, and received his PhD in Zoology from Harvard in 1894. He was at the University of Michigan for a year, and for five and a half years, he was Superintendent of the Illinois Biological Station, where he wrote numerous articles and books, including the massive The Plankton of the Illinois River 1894-1899. He next went to the University of California at Berkeley where he was a leading member of the faculty for twenty-five years. Look at the upper left end of the bookplate; the campanile (bell tower) seen outside the window is the one on the Berkeley campus of the University of California. Kofoid was one of the leading investigators in protozoology and limnology, and was the developer of what came to be known as the Kofoid Bucket, a device used in the collection of planktonic samples. The associates of Professor Kofoid are said to have been always impressed by the succession of arrivals of packages of books, which did not cease until his death in 1947. A few months before his death, he gave the University more than 40,000 volumes, including many rare works in the history of science and medicine. Near Fine.

1763. "- SECONDO STATO DI QUATTRO - Acquaforte e bulino, 1763, firmata in lastra . "- SECOND STATE, OF FOUR - Etching and engraving, 1763, signed on plate. Example from the contemporary Roman Edition. A very good impression, printed on contemporary laid paper with watermark ""double encircled fleur de lys with letters CB"", with margins, very good condition. Taken from Vedute di Roma; the whole work consists of 135 plates which have been individually produced by Piranesi along 30 years, from 1745 circa until his death. Two more works have been subsequently added, two plates by his son Francesco. They have been printed for the first time in 1751 (34 plates) by the editor Giovanni Bouchard, afterwards by Piranesi himself, publisher in Palazzo Tomati in Rome (as it is written on m,any plates), until the final edition of 137 plates. After Piranesi's death, his son Francesco inherited the plates, editing them first in Rome and then in Paris. The Calcografia Camerale, nowadays Calcografia Nazionale, has then bought the plates which are now kept inside the building." Roma Rome Hind 69 II/IV 585 445

A DEFENCE OF THE OBSERVATIONS ON THE CHARTER AND CONDUCT OF THE SOCIETY FOR THE PROPAGATION OF THE GOSPEL IN FOREIGN PARTS, AGAINST AN ANONYMOUS PAMPHLET FALSLY [sic] INTITLED, A CANDID EXAMINATION OF DR. MAYHEW'S OBSERVATIONS, &c. AND ALSO AGAINST THE LETTER TO A FRIEND ANNEXED THERETO, SAID TO CONTAIN A SHORT VINDICATION OF SAID SOCIETY. BY ONE OF ITS MEMBERS. BY JONATHAN MAYHEW, D.D. PASTOR OF THE WEST CHURCH IN BOSTON

Boston, 1763. 144pp. Dbd. Minor dust soiling. Near fine. In a half morocco and cloth box. This work recapitulates and extends Jonathan Mayhew's 1763 argument with the Church of England's Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts. John Adams later wrote the following about Mayhew and the controversy: "To draw the character of Mayhew, would be to transcribe a dozen volumes. This transcendent genius threw all the weight of his great fame into the scale of his country in 1761, and maintained it there with zeal and ardor till his death, in 1766. In 1763 appeared the controversy between him and Mr. Apthorp, Mr. Caner, Dr. Johnson, and Archbishop Secker, on the charter and conduct of the Society for Propagating the Gospel in Foreign Parts...If any gentleman supposes this controversy to be nothing to the present purpose, he is grossly mistaken. It spread an universal alarm against the authority of Parliament. It excited a general and just apprehension, that bishops, and dioceses, and churches, and priests, and tithes, were to be imposed on us by Parliament. It was known that neither king, nor ministry, nor archbishops, could appoint bishops in America, without an act of Parliament; and if Parliament could tax us, they could establish the Church of England, with all its creeds, articles, tests, ceremonies, and tithes, and prohibit all other churches, as conventicles and schism shops." Rare; no copy appears in auction records since 1974. EVANS 9442. SABIN 47130. John Adams, "The Meaning of the American Revolution" in NILES' WEEKLY REGISTER, March 7, 1818.
