Travels Of The Jesuits, Into Various Parts Of The World: Particularly China And The East Indies. Intermixed with an account of the manners, government, civil and religious ceremonies, natural history and curiosities, of the several nations visited by those fathers.

London: printed for T. Piety at the Rose and Crown, 1762., 1762. SECOND EDITION. Two volumes, octavo, pp.487, [24 "A Concise Account of the Spanish Dominions in America"]; and volume two, pp.507, [1] advertisement for T. Piety's other titles, [19] index. Sympathetically rebacked in recent brown calf over the original calf boards, gilt panelling to boards, red and black title labels and gilt decoration to spines; all edges red speckled. Ownership inscription of "James Caldwell" to front pastedowns of both volumes; note apparently presenting the set to the "Congregatonal Library" by "Mrs C Strong", believed to be Celia Strong (1826-1887), wife of Reverend John C. Strong, to pastedown of volume one. Blind library stamp, to title page, "American Congregational Association, Boston". Some instances of pencil annotations, including two to volume one both referring to the necessity of converting the Indian subcontinent by force. Binding has been professionally repaired, including the reback and new corners, original boards showing signs of historic heavy wear including some leather cracking, small chips and gouges. Lockman was known primarily as a translator, and wrote a number of well respected translations primarily from French. He had some communication with Alexander Pope and other great figures of the time, being known to frequent the then popular Slaughter's Coffee House. This is a translation of an interesting texts which records the view of Jesuit missionary work around the world, specifically in converting non-colonised countries.

Mappa Gubernii Orelensis Auctore J. Schmidt.

      - Highly detailed rare map covering the area of the Oryol Oblast in Russia, south of Moscow. The map is a result of a new survey of Russia done in the first years of the reign of Catherine the Great (from 1762) by the Geographical Department of the Academy of Science in St. Petersburg. The survey was done by Johann Treskot (1719-1786) and Johann Schmidt (1732-1786) until the mid 1770s. "By January 1763, Schmidt had 9 large maps ready in manuscript form—most of them in the Baltic countries while one, prepared by Truskot, was devoted Siberia" (Bagrow, L. Russian Cartography to 1800 p. 202). The new map of Russia was published in 1776 in 23 sheets. Treskot’s and Schmidt’s survey was highly influential on the contemporary cartography of Russia. Their maps were copied in the next decade in Russia and in Europe. Today the original maps by Treskot and Schmidt are rare. Tiny tears in white margins, wide margins uncut with deckled edges, left and right white margin folded.

        La Marchande de Canards

Paris: Moyreau, 1762. Hand-coloured engraving on laid paper by Moyreau. Very good condition apart from some overall light soiling, minor foxing, and a bit of mild rippling. A fine composition showing a group of cavalrymen congregating oustide of a duck merchant's cottage. This beautifully coloured print is one of many engravings Jean Moyreau (1690-1762) made of Wouwerman's paintings. Born into a family of Dutch artists in Haarlem in 1619, the prolific draughtsman and painter Philips Wouwerman was primarily renowned for his lively battle and hunting scenes. After an early elementary introduction to the art of painting by his father, Paulus Joostens, he trained with the landscape painter Jan Wynants (1620-1679) and briefly worked in the Hamburg studio of the history painter Everard Decker (d. 1647) around 1638. Wouwerman later returned to Haarlem, where he joined the Guild of St. Luke, which later elected him to the office of vinder in 1646. His elegantly rendered, distinctive works, which are characterized by their luminous colour and detailed, animated treatment of figures and landscape alike, were extremely popular in the seventeenth century as well as the nineteenth century, during which they were zealously collected. In addition to his hunting scenes, Wouwerman's varied and substantial repertoire of subjects included military and battle scenes, landscapes, travellers, animals and genre subjects. Cf. Benezit, Dictionnaire des Peintres, Sculpteurs, Dessinateurs, et Graveurs , vol 14, p. 723.

PRELIMINARY ARTICLES OF PEACE, BETWEEN HIS BRITANNICK MAJESTY, THE MOST CHRISTIAN KING, AND THE CATHOLICK KING. SIGNED AT FONTAINEBLEAU, THE 3d DAY OF NOVEMBER, 1762

London. 1762.. 23pp. printed in double-column format in parallel French and English. Quarto. Recent half morocco and marbled boards. Titlepage lightly soiled. Very good. The first publication of one of the most far-reaching and significant peace treaties to deal with North America. By terms of this treaty, printed here for final ratification and made official in 1763, major shifts in the American balance of power take place. The French are almost entirely expelled from North America, as their Canadian possessions and all lands east of the Mississippi are ceded to the British. The remainder of Louisiana goes to the Spanish. The Spanish give up claims in Florida to the British, who also receive the Grenadines and Dominica. All the French get is the return of Martinique, Guadeloupe, and several smaller Caribbean islands. The new balance of power set the stage for the American Revolution and the rise of the power of the United States. HOWES P569. SABIN 65044. SERVIES 423. DAVENPORT 148.

Copper engraving by Canot, after Serres from a drawing made "on the spot". Expert marginal repairs. Sheet size: 18 1/2 x 25 5/8 inches. Spectacular images recalling the siege and capture of Havana in 1762. A fine pair of views from a series illustrating events during the capture and reduction of Havana by a force under the command of Sir George Pocock (1706-1792). In February 1762 Pocock "was appointed commander-in-chief of 'a secret expedition' ... which sailed from Spithead on 5 March ... On 26 April it arrived in Martinique, sailed again on 6 May, and ... landed ... the troops six miles to the eastward of Havana on 7 June ... The seige-works were at once commenced. A large body of seamen were put ashore, and 'were extremely useful in landing the cannon and ordnance stores , manning the batteries, making fascines, and supplying the army with water' (Beatson) [these preparations are shown in the first of the present plates]... By the 30th the batteries were ready, and on 1 July opened a heavy fire, supported by three ships of the line, under the immediate command of Captain Hervey of the Dragon [this incident is pictured in the second plate]. The Moro was engaged, but after some six hours, the ships were obliged to haul out of action, two of them - the Cambridge and the Dragon - having sustained heavy loss and much damage ... the English batteries gradually subdued the enemy's fire ... the Moro was taken by storm on 30 July, and on 13 Aug. the town ... surrendered by capitulation. The money value of the prize was enormous. The share of Pocock alone, as naval commander-in-chief, was 122,697l. 10s. 6d." ( DNB ). Dominic Serres 'was born in 1722 at Auch in Gascony, and was educated in the public school there... His parents intended him for the church, but, this not suiting his taste, he ran away from his native town, and made his way on foot into Spain. He there shipped on board a vessel for South America as a common sailor, and eventually became master of a trading vessel to the Havannah, where he was taken prisoner by a British frigate and brought to this country about 1758. After his release he married and lived for a time in Northamptonshire. He had received some instruction in drawing, and commenced life in England as a painter of naval pieces, for which the wars of the period furnished an abundance of subjects. He received some assistance from Charles Brooking, and soon established a position. In 1765 Serres became a member of the Incorporated Society of Artists, and exhibited with them for two years. On the establishment of the Royal Academy in 1768 he was chosen one of the foundation members, and was a constant contributor up to the time of his death. Between 1761 and 1793 he exhibited eight works at the Society of Artists, twenty-one at the Free Society, and 105 at the Royal Academy ... Serres was a good linguist. In 1792 he succeeded Wilton as librarian to the academy. He was also appointed marine-painter to George III, but he did not long hold these offices. He died in 1793, and was buried at St. Marylebone Old Church.' ( DNB ).

To which are added, an abstract of the theory of ship-building; an essay on naval discipline, by a late experienced sea-commander; a general idea of the armament of the French Navy; with some practical observations; by Christopher O'Bryen, Esq; Lieutenant in His Majesty's Navy.

London: W. Johnston, 1762. 4to. viii, 90, (2)pp. b/w folding plates. This is the first English translation of HosteÂ’s “Art des Armées Navales”, first published in Lyons in 1697. It is the first book on naval tactics printed in the English language. Eighteen magnificent folding engraved plates illustrate naval maneuvers and tactics. The last two pages provide a list of “Ships lost by the English during the Present War” - presumably the Anglo Spaninsh War of 1762 -1763 - and an errata. On page 65 in the article entitled “To form a line,” Hoste stresses the importance of the strength of the center of the line “for if that is forced, or broke through, the battle is looked upon as lost.” Corbett references this statement in Signals and Instructions, (London, 1908), describing OÂ’BryenÂ’s “Naval Evolutions” as the first work printed in English to refer to “Breaking the Line.” A&W 2150. Bound in contemporary marbled boards rebacked in calf. A handsome copy

English Hero

1762 - [CROUCH, Nathaniel]. The English Hero: Or, Sir Francis Drake Reviv'd… Inlarged and reduced into Chapters and Contents, by R.B. London: Printed for C. Hitch, L. Hawes, S. Crowder and Co., 1762. 12mo (3-1/4 by 5 inches), contemporary full calf rebacked in calf-gilt, red morocco spine label. $1800.Later edition of this popular and influential biography of Sir Francis Drake, illustrated with an engraved frontispiece portrait of the sea captain, in contemporary calf boards. This brief biography of Drake, a key contribution to his legendary status in the popular imagination, includes accounts of his global circumnavigation, his defeat of the Spanish Armada and his voyages to North America. "Based largely on Fletcher's World encompassed [1628] and on Nichol's Sir Francis Drake revived [1626], this account… seems to have struck English popular fancy more forcibly" than its sources (Howes B1035). In fact, although the title page denotes this the "sixteenth edition," the book actually saw 23 by 1762. "R.B." are initials for "Robert Burton," a pseudonym bookseller and publisher Nathaniel Crouch appears to have adopted in reference to the author of The Anatomy of Melancholy (1620): "The Anatomy… [gave] many humbly educated men a passing knowledge of the classics. In a similar fashion Crouch's history books presented shortened and simplified versions of serious works to audiences that might otherwise never have read them" (DNB). First published in 1687. Sabin 9500. Contemporary ink markings and later pencil bibliographic notation to front pastedown.Occasional light foxing, minor closed tear to leaf [C6], free endpapers renewed. Contemporary calf boards lightly rubbed with expert restoration. Extremely good condition. Scarce. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

New York 1762 - 2 volumes. [6],iii,488,[2]; [8],268pp. including Errata leaf in first volume. Antique three quarter calf and marbled boards, leather label. Faint old library stamps on titlepages, ownership inscription on titlepage of first volume, some tanning and foxing. Very good. The rare two-volume compilation of early New York colonial laws prepared by William Smith (author of the History of New York) and William Livingston. The Laws of New-York was "the first digest of the colonial statutes in force at that time," according to the DAB. The work is also notable for the subscriber's list, which includes prominent names such as Benjamin Franklin, Charles Pinckney, and James De Lancey, among others. Also includes the second volume (often sold on its own), published ten years after the first. This latter volume includes much on the difficult years of the French and Indian War, with numerous acts relating to raising money and troops, preventing stores from falling into French hands, and much more. An important and handsomely produced pair, rarely encountered together. The first volume has the ink inscription "1752 8th August This Book belongs to me and my son Samuel Clowes Junr. S. Clowes." Samuel Clowes was a New York attorney who was born in England in 1674 and emigrated to New York in 1698. He practiced in Jamaica, Queens, for decades until his death in 1760.

Autograph letter, signed, by Lord George Anson to Lord Hardwicke

London: Office of the Admiralty, 1762. Original manuscript, laid paper sheet measuring 235 x 185 mm., annotated to both faces; folded to letter size, excellent condition. Original manuscript letter written and signed by Admiral George Anson three months before his death. The letter is dated 5 March 1762, almost three months to the day before Anson died 6 June 1762. The most successful and famous English privateer of the eighteenth-century, Anson returned home from his Pacific raiding voyage in 1744 laden with gold. Although scurvy and disaster claimed the lives of the majority of his crew, the sheer volume of treasure hailed the expedition a success in the public eye, and assured Anson's enduring fame. This letter is fully signed "Anson". Written from the Admiralty and intended for Lord Hardwicke (Anson's father-in-law), the letter concerns the commission of a naval officer. At this time Anson was First Lord of the Admiralty.

      - Paris, Michael Lambert, 1762. 8vo. 116 pp.+ 2 folding handcoloured engr. maps over the eastern mediteranean and the Middle East and of Palestine. Old paper repair on the title leaf, minor spotting. Near contemporary half calf, richly gilt spine with blue label, marbled edges. From the library of Bengt Ferrner, with his signature and note that he has received it from the author. Warmholtz 1258. Carlander II, 556. Fina kartor. Medlem i Svenska Vetenskapsakademien 1760.

[LARGE COLLECTION OF 18th-CENTURY MANUSCRIPT LEGAL DOCUMENTS RECORDING AN EXPANSIVE RANGE OF ROYAL DECREES AND LEGAL ACTIONS IN THE AUDIENCIA OF CHILE, COMPOSED IN SANTIAGO CIRCA 1722 - 1762]

Santiago, 1762. Folio. Dbd. Edges lightly worn, occasional moderate dampstaining and soiling. 18th-century tax stamps on several leaves, including a few blanks. In very good condition. In a cloth clamshell case, leather label. A massive collection of manuscript legal documents generated in Santiago, Chile between 1722 and 1762. The collection records a wide range of legal notices including royal decrees from Spain, affirmations that such decrees were received and reviewed, and updates and references to earlier laws. The majority of the documents mention local figures such as high government officials, church leaders, and other members of the local aristocracy; a few refer to members of other sectors of the community, including mulattoes and "Indios infideles;" and a few others include news of royal figures in Spain. The subjects detailed in these documents include financial matters and accounts, land holdings, religious matters (including organizations, missionaries, and rituals), the naming of judges, criminal acts (including homicides), judicial decisions, visits and actions performed by different officials, and numerous other legal matters concerning everyday life in colonial Chile documented over the course of four decades in the mid-18th century. In addition to the content of the texts, the formulaic elements and the physical characteristics of the manuscripts are also notable as evidence of when and where the documents were produced. These include the various hands in which the documents are written, signatures of officials and scribes, standard formulas for the different types of legal documents and summaries included at the end of particular texts (both comparable to the forms found in printed versions of similar laws), Maltese crosses inscribed at the beginning of certain royal documents, and tax stamps with different dates found on several leaves of paper. A vast gathering of mid-18th-century Spanish legal manuscript documents produced in Chile, with much potential for additional study and research.

Xenophon's Memoirs of Socrates. With the Defence of Socrates, Before his Judges

Bath: C. Pope, 1762. Octavo, contemporary calf boards ruled in gilt, skillfully rebacked, raised bands, gilt rules to spine compartments, crimson morocco spine label. With errata, preface, and eight-page list of subscribers. Armorial bookplate of Robert Fellowes to front pastedown. Light shelfwear, corners bumped. First edition of Sarah Fielding's English translation of fifth-century Greek historian Xenophon. Along with Plato and Aristophanes, Xenophon provides a memorable first-hand portrait of his teacher Socrates: "when his friends would have withdrawn him privately, he would not consent, but asked them with a Smile, 'If they knew of any Place beyond the Borders of Attica, where Death could not approach him?'" The bluestocking sister of novelist Henry Fielding, translator Sarah Fielding published fiction (including The Governess, the first English novel designed for children), criticism, and biography. Her Xenophon remained the standard English text for well over a century. A handsome near-fine copy.

THE ENGLISH HERO: OR, SIR FRANCIS DRAKE REVIV'D. BEING A FULL ACCOUNT OF THE DANGEROUS VOYAGES, ADMIRABLE ADVENTURES, NOTABLE DISCOVERIES...THE SIXTEENTH EDITION...Inlarged and Reduced into Chapters and Contents, by R.B

London, 1762. 16mo. Modern gilt morocco, spine gilt with raised bands, a.e.g. Spine ends bit worn, outer hinges rubbed. Some scattered dust soiling. Else very good. "R.B." were the initials of Robert Burton, the pseudonym for author-publisher Nathaniel Crouch. This account of the exploits of Sir Francis Drake was itself mainly cribbed from a work first published in 1653. Crouch's first edition appeared in 1687. Although styled "sixteenth edition" on the titlepage, that may have been counting from 1653 or, as Kraus suggests, the second and third editions may never have existed. An important work in the Drake legend, it describes the Nombre de Dios voyage of 1572, the circumnavigation of 1575-77, Drake's defeat of the Armada in 1588, and his final American voyages. "A biography of Drake in chap-book form...like all such chap-book publications, copies are seldom found" - Kraus (commenting on the 1695 edition).

BY HIS EXCELLENCY FRANCIS BERNARD, ESQ; CAPTAIN-GENERAL AND GOVERNOR IN CHIEF, IN AND OVER HIS MAJESTY'S PROVINCE OF THE MASSACHUSETTS-BAY IN NEW-ENGLAND...A PROCLAMATION. WHEREAS THE GENERAL COURT...HATH PROVIDED FOR THE IMMEDIATE RAISING TWO THOUSAND MEN...TO BE PUT UNDER THE SUPREME COMMAND OF SIR JEFFRY AMHERST...TO INVITE HIS MAJESTY'S GOOD SUBJECTS TO INLIST IN SUCH SERVICE...[caption title]

Boston, 1762. Old folds. Moderate tanning and soiling, particularly in margins. Clean tear at top along fold with no loss; small holes at fold not affecting text. A good copy. Archivally matted and protected with a Mylar sheet. An extremely rare Massachusetts broadside printed towards the end of the French and Indian War, in which Gov. Francis Bernard calls for two thousand new recruits to serve under Sir Jeffrey Amherst, Field Marshal and Commander-in-Chief and Governor of North America. Amherst had previously been responsible for a series of victories against the French which led to the conquest of Canada. The proclamation, dated March 4, 1762, indicates that the soldiers will "serve only within the northern district of North America." Additional terms of service for the men who enlist include the following: "They are to serve only until the last day of October next, and will be discharged sooner if a peace should intervene. They are to enter into immediate pay, and to receive seven pounds each, as a bounty, besides a blanket; and they will have six dollars per month; and be provided with victuals, tents, camp-equipage, and all other accommodations...And they may in general depend upon serving under the officers with whom they enlist." Extremely rare, not in Evans, Bristol, or NAIP. Ford lists only the Massachusetts Historical Society copy.
