Our copy lacks plate 13 of volume 1; plate 50 of volume 21 (in its place is bound plate 36 which is double), and a text leaf in volume 2. A few copies of the work were also issued with the plates coloured.A total of some 26,000 plants are illustrated and described. 'The Vegetable system is of great importance because it gave for the first time in the vernacular a comprehensive treatment of the plant kingdom, on a lavish scale. adopting the Linnaean generic names and introducing binary nomenclature' (Stafleu). Numerous species are described for the first time, most being recently introduced exotics. The Vegetable system is dedicated to the Prince of Wales, later George III. Its publication was instigated by, and partially financed by, John Stuart, Earl of Bute, a notable patron of botany and the initiator of Kew Gardens as a botanic garden. He may well have contributed to the text. John Hill was involved in lengthy financial disputes with Bute, and the publication of the Vegetable system ended in Hill's bankruptcy and death.

Amsterdam, P.Fouquet junior 1761 - Houbraken, J[acobus] after C[ornelis] Troost. Amsterdam, P.Fouquet junior, 1761. Copper engraving. Overall size : 38.4 x 44.5 cm. Engraved dedicatee’s arms in centre of otherwise blank lower margin. Proof copy in its first state before lettering. A festive scene of a family celebrating Santa Claus Day round a table graced with a large silver coffee urn with porcelain cups, status symbols of the wealthy burgher. The father, dressed in an informal house robe sits at the table near a warming fire place, watching his children play. His wife is standing beside him with the youngest child in her arms which is holding a toy. A daughter next to her is showing her doll, a brother is eating sweetmeats on the floor, whilst a weeping older boy is being punished with a rod by the maid who has taken away his toy. The evocative scene was engraved by the portraitist Jacobus Houbraken (1698-1780), after a painting by Cornelis Troost (1697-1750) in the collection of the Amsterdam town councillor Dionis Mussman. Troost specialized in genre scenes and was known as the “Dutch Hogarth”.See the reference to this print in Pim Reinders & Thera Wijsenbeek, Koffie in Nederland. Vier eeuwen cultuurgeschiedenis. Rome, 1748. Large Folio, 537 x 400 mm, bound in contemporary Italian calf. |~||~||~||~||~||~| A magnificent copy of the Carceri as published by Piranesi in a combination volume, as described by Andrew Robison. This is the first printing of the "dark" series of Carceri after Piranesi radically reworked the engraved plates, adding substantial details and, more particularly, heightening the light and dark tones and infusing the images with dramatic shadows and disturbing, haunting imagery. A large-margined, fresh copy on thick paper, printed and published by Piranesi himself. Piranesi originally etched a set of 14 plates during the late 1740s, issued anonymously under the title Invenzioni Capric di Carceri all Acqua Forte Datte in Luce, published in 1750. This first series must be viewed as an intensely private work, not for the audience that his Prima Parte di Architetture, e Prospettive (1743) nor his Vedute di Roma (1748-1788) were intended, i.e., visitors on the Grand Tour. The first issue etchings exhibit more purely decorative inventions that can be viewed as an experiment in a "Venetian" graphic style. However, something changed between 1750 and 1760 when Piranesi went back to the Carceri plates and began to rework them, adding extensive detail to the plates, creating two complete new engravings and, most importantly, impregnating the plates with double biting of harsh black diagonals, enclosing the spaces with nightmarish light and dark contrasts and gloomy shadows, and emphasizing the instruments of torture: chains, ropes, metal cables, iron grills, gallows, spiked wheels, powerful and sinister indistinct instruments, large block and tackle pulleys, and endless stairways heading up and down but offering no exit. "The disturbing psychological atmosphere of these architectural fantasies has caught the imagination of many artists over succeeding centuries. Their menacing, exotic atmosphere inspired the Romantics of the 19th century, while the Surrealists of the 20th century admired their irrational portrayal of objects in space" (St. Louis Public Library, The Steedman Exhibit). The numerous writers and artists that came under the spell of Piranesi's Carceri would have found but little inspiration in the early states of the Carceri series. "In this series of variations on a theme, Piranesi attacked his copperplates with a boldness and spontaneity unmatched in any other work of his time. One of his goals seems to have been a thorough exploration of the tools and techniques of the etching medium" (Metropolitan Museum of Art, Heilbrunn Timeline of Art History, The Round Tower: Plate 3 of Carceri, ca. 1749-60). Condition: Plates in superb dark impressions with considerable burr.Very fine condition with large margins, engraved plates on thick Roman paper.

Negley, 1141. 'Utopies au siècle des Lumières', 034/5. Versins, à l’article « Listonai », p. 540). Actually, fighting had been going on in America for two years. The war involved all the major European powers and did not go well for England until the elder William Pitt came to power in 1756. He concentrated on fighting the French and sent badly needed troop reinforcements to North America. The Treaty of Paris, signed by Great Britain, France, and Spain on February 10, 1763, ended the Seven Years' War and its American counterpart, the French and Indian War (1754-1763). Worldwide, France was humbled and the treaty marked the start of the colonial and maritime supremacy of Great Britain. Britain's success was costly, however, and Parliament's attempt to cover its debts and to pay for a continuing military presence in America by direct taxation of the colonists soon caused strained relations between mother country and colonies. The 90th (or Colonel Morgan's) Irish Light Infantry, of 1759-63, was raised in Ireland, and the papers of the day speak in glowing terms of its fine appearance when first brought over to England. It was employed at the famous siege of Belle Isle on June 7, 1761. Protected by a fleet under Admiral Keppel, 8,000 British troops led by General Hodgeson landed under enemy fire and after difficulty forced the surrender of the garrison of Palais, the main town. British casualties were 700, many more than the French. It was was also much distinguished in June 1762 when British troops and naval units (Earl of Albemarle and Admiral Pococke) laid siege to Havana. They took Moro Castle, key to the defense, by storm and after two months captured the city. It was disbanded in England at the peace of 1763.
