[MOÏSE, François-Xavier.
Region of Besançon, 1761. Manuscript, with inserted prints. 8vo (172 × 98 mm), pp. 181, [182-388] (blank save for for borders, ruling and pagination). Text opening in Latin but mainly in French, in a neat and legible hand. Pink ruled borders and pagination. 34 devotional prints (all but two engraved, the others woodcut) bound in. Contemporary red morocco, gilt with panelled sides and spine, gilt edges, red and white silk endpapers (a pair of each, the latter with painted pink borders), broad silk markers (pink, blue and white). Slightly rubbed, spine slightly cocked, but a pretty volume. The personal record of the spiritual devotions and exercises of a novice priest in pre-Revolutionary France, with records of his attendance at several retreats (some Jesuit-run) and his own spiritual reflections leading up to the time his ordination and beyond. Neatly kept in a hand in emulation of print, the volume also includes over thirty small-format devotional prints by printers such as Englebrecht, Pfeffel and others, some of which appear to be provincial end likely very rare. Among them are at least two bearing added captions indicating they have touched holy relics or sites. The spiritual reflections are arrestingly personal, with long sections of self reproach and mortification on the subject of worldly temptation, often involving the perils of contact with women. The manuscript opens in Latin, but after p. 37 is largely in French, the second half of the volume remaining blank. The text forms 13 major sections describing the teachings received at initiatory retreats in early 1761, … [Click Below for Full Description]

Berlin, Buchladen der Real Schule 1761. -62. 2 volumes in 1. [VIII],[III]-XVI,576,114,[1]; [II],625[1],77p. With numerous tables in the text and 1 folding table at end. Wanting a dedication leaf before the preface. Contemp. half calf, gilt back with red label, marbled edges, little rubbed. Second edition, much expanded with a second volume. The first complete and systematic treatise on demography and population statistics in Germany, building forth on the work of William Derham, John Graunt and William Petty. Sussmilch's Divine order in the circumstances of the human sex, birth, death and reproduction' was an attempt to disclose the demographic phenomena that, as he thought, were regulated by the Divine Order. The work includes a fairly complete compendium of all the statistical literature up to his time. Schumpeter notes of Sussmilch that he 'may be said to have put vital statistics definitely on its feet by developing and systematizing the work of his English predecessors'. This first appeared in 1741 in one small volume only. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

ERASMUS DESIDERIUS
In Basilea, a spese della Saviezza, 1761. Cm. 16, pp. (4) 391 (23). Con una bellissima antiporta incisa finemente in rame con raffigurazione allegorica della "Pazzia regina del mondo" e i ritratti di Erasmo e Tommaso Moro. Testo italiano e francese (di Nicolas Gueudeville). Legatura coeva in piena pelle; dorso a 5 nervi con titoli in oro su tassello in marocchino rosso e ricchi fregi dorati agli scomparti. Piccole mancanze a cuffie e punte; sporadiche e trascurabili arrossature/fioriture. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

London, 1761. Two volumes bound in one. [8],132,*129-*142,[133]-168 (as issued); [4],246pp. plus eighteen folding maps and plans. Errata overslip on p.80 of second volume. Folio. Antique-style speckled calf, tooled in gilt, spine gilt, raised bands, gilt morocco label. Minor toning and foxing. A handsome copy in very good condition. First edition, second issue of this major rarity. "A monumental geographical work important equally for its text as well as its maps" - Streeter. "This is the best English language description of Canada and Louisiana to its day" - Nebenzahl. This extensive work is a primary source for the French on the Great Lakes and in the Mississippi Valley at the height of their power in North America. Its British publication is also indicative of increased British interest in the Mississippi Valley and the West - they were on the verge of ejecting the French from their colonial empire, as happened several years later with the conclusion of the French and Indian War. The first part of Jefferys' work describes Canada and Louisiana, and France's trouble with the Indians. The second part provides a close look at the island territories of the French West Indies, including Martinique, Hispaniola, Guadeloupe, and other smaller islands. These Caribbean colonies brought a fortune to the French from sugar cultivation, and numerous maps included here depict the French sugar islands. The maps are generally regarded as the best of the period, and include a map of North America based on D'Anville and a plan of New Orleans. This is the third edition, first published in 1644. “These extracts will serve to show the hawks known to falconers in Spain, and the Spanish names for them. Good. 1761. Hardcover. 16mo - 17 x 11.5 cm.; (2) - 208 - (2) pp. The text is solely in Greek with the exception of page 3 where the alphabet is printed in Greek with English below, both upper and lower case. Bound in a full calf leather with a six panel spine with gilt motifs and line work. Most probably not the original binding as the paste down end papers are of a printed white and red pattern. The first leaf present is blank on both sides with a written letter "N" on the recto. The last leaf, again blank on both sides, has a previous owner's note of 7 lines in Greek on the top third of the recto of the leaf. Illustrated title page, full page engravings on pages 6, 102, and 200 with some engaved head pieces present also. A few pages have minor chipping of the edges though not affecting any text. Rubbing and wear to the fore corners of the boards and the spine tips with the spine head being quite worn. Mild and general foxing throughout with some worming of the fore edge margins of the pages. An Orthodox liturgical text first published in 1494 in Cetinje of what is now Montenegro. The liturgical cycle required that the text be chanted daily at Vespers, Matins, Compline and (on Sunday) the Midnight office. The "eight tones" refer to the use of a different tone for each week of an eight week cycle and is sometimes called the litugical mode. The text itself as compiled by St. John Damascene (675-749) is considered a summing up of the Byzantine orthodox faith. A somewhat scarce edition. Further digital images are available upon asking. .

SUMMARY: After being estranged from her husband, Lady Pennington wrote this book instructing women on religion, prayer, dress, needlework, the theatre, marriage, dancing, and other "feminine" pursuits. Originally published in 1761, Lady Sarah's letter deals with the issues of women's education and the moral conflicts that many women may face. Interestingly enough, although Lady Sarah was a writer herself, she did not approve of fictitious novels which she considered unrealistic. She was distrustful of texts leading women to poor judgment and encouraging them to make fatal mistakes in conduct. Her text differs from these in that it instructs and gives advice as to how to navig … [Click Below for Full Description]
