PALMIERI GIUSEPPE
Rarissima prima edizione. Cfr. Houttuyn, M. [Linnaeus]
Amsterdam, F. Houttuyn, 1761-1785. Three sections in 37 volumes. 8vo (21.2 x 13.3 cm) [22.1 x 13.6 cm]. Text and 296 finely hand-coloured engraved plates. Contemporary uniform mottled half calf over marbled boards; spine with gilt-rolled bands and red and green morocco labels with gilt title. A complete set - in the very rare originally coloured edition - of the main Dutch natural history encyclopedia of the 18th century compiled by the Dutch medical doctor and naturalist Martinus - or Maarten - Houttuyn (1720-1798) and often referred to as the Linnaeus Houttuyn edition. The three sections are divided as follows: section I: Zoology in 18 volumes with 143 plates; section II: Botany in 14 volumes with 105 plates, illustrating 275 species of plants and "including well over 100 new species of plants"; section III: Minerals in five volumes with 48 plates. As noted by Stafleu, "The taxonomic part of the book is extremely detailed and contains a wealth of incidental information not brought together in this form elsewhere", not even by Linnaeus himself". Bindings a bit rubbed, a few joints and inner hinges starting; some fraying at spine tops; some mostly marginal dampstaining to zoology volume 3 and 16, and botany volume 12; a few plates bound different from the binder's instructions, namely: plate V in zoology volume 1 placed opposite p. 353 instead of 337; plate XXI in zoology vol. 2 placed opposite p. 449 instead of 499; plate C in botany vol. 13 placed opposite p. 225 instead of 205. Some bindings with tiny head or tail problems, but generally the bindings are in a good state. … [Click Below for Full Description]

Sprache: Französisch Bestell-Nr: 25526 Bemerkungen: Techener, Bibliothèque champenoise 499 (Ausgabe von 1755). - Über das sog. "Wolfskind" Marie-Angélique Memmie LeBlanc (geb. im heutigen Wisconsin, 1712; gest. 15. [Click Below for Full Description]

JONG, Jacobus de.
Geschriften.Noordwijk-Binnen, 1761. Oblong folio (21 x 33 cm). Manuscript calligraphic copybook in brown ink on paper, with a calligraphic title-page followed by sample texts (mostly from the Old and New Testament) in Dutch in a roundhand script with decorative flourishes, and verses by Jacob Cats on the outside of the first and last leaves, the last illustrated with a penwork father, son and a large fish eating a small fish. Side-stitched, with the first leaf and last leaf serving as wrappers. [31] ll. A manuscript calligraphic copybook by a student learning penmanship, but with a calligraphic title-page giving his name, the title, place and year. Jacobus de Jong is a fairly common name, but Noordwijk-Binnen (now part of Noordwijk in South Holland, on the coast near Leiden) is fairly small and a boy of that name was baptised there (Dutch Reformed) on 27 August 1747, which would make him 14 if he began work on the present copybook at the beginning of the 1761/62 school year. He was the son of Roelof de Jong and his second wife Elizabeth Verkinderen.Nearly all leaves are written on the rectos only, mostly using Bible quotations (Old Testament, New Testament and Psalms) as sample texts, but the first leaf (before the title-page) serves as a front wrapper and has a verse quotation in 4 lines of large script on the front and a couple practise Gs on the verso (trials for the first letter of the title), while the last leaf has a normal sample text on the recto but has verses illustrated with penwork figures on the verso, serving as a back wrapper. The texts on both the front and … [Click Below for Full Description]

Historie van mevrouwe de hartoginne van Pompadour. [Wrapper-title: Levensbeschryving van de hartoginne van Pompadour]. Zaltbommel, Johannes Willem Kanneman, 1761. 8vo. With engraved frontispiece and title-page printed in red and black. Recased in 18th-century vellum, later endpapers, preserving the original publisher's printed wrappers. [8], 207, [1 blank] pp. First and only edition of Kersteman's extremely rare "histoire scandaleuse", describing the flagrant life of Madame de Pompadour (1721-1764), mistress of Louis XV. The book is described on the title-page and in the preface as a defence against the slanderous biographies published by the French and English. This apparently couldn't convince the French ambassador Louis Augustin d'Affry, who had, immediately after publication, destroyed the full run after buying all available copies for their full price, to defend Madame de Pompadour her good name. With modern bookplate on pastedown. The engraved frontispiece is possibly transferred from another work and has a small restored tear in the margins. Faint dampstain in the last quire and a few spots throughout. Good untrimmed copy. The original wrappers soiled, but the vellum very good. Buisman 1029; STCN (2 copies); Ter Horst no. X; Waller 745.

[GRIFFITH, ELIZABETH, TRANSLATOR].
London: Printed for R. and J. Dodsley, 1761. First edition in English. 2 vols, 12mo, 19th-century brown half calf, marbled paper boards and matching endpapers, red and green morocco spine labels, gilt decorations and lettering, t.e.g. One of the earliest works by Elizabeth Griffith (1727-93), the interesting English playwright and novelist, who resorted to translation at the beginning in her career to support her penniless husband. Ninon de L'Enclos (1620-1705) was a famous French courtesan, patron of the arts and friend to many in literary circles. Though based on her Memoirs, much of the text is by Elizabeth Griffith, including the letters to the Marquis de Sevigné, and it reads much like an epistolary novel. Edges a little rubbed; very good copy.

(Princeton University) Gibbons, Thomas
London: J. Buckland .., 1761. First edition, state unknown. 31, [1, ad for books "Published by the Rev. Mr Thomas Gibbons"] pp. 8vo. Bound in late 19th century blue quarter calf and marbled boards, binding rubbed, small piece from A2 costing a few words. First edition, state unknown. 31, [1, ad for books "Published by the Rev. Mr Thomas Gibbons"] pp. 8vo. Gibbons Funeral Sermon on the Death of Rev. Samuel Davies, President of Princeton. Gibbons (1720-1785), an Independent minister, wrote an important biography of Issac Watts, kept an entertaining diary of his active London life, and wrote poetry and hymns. Like the present volume, many of his publications were funeral sermons - this one preached on the death of the Reverend Samuel Davies (1723-1761), a Presbyterian minister from Delaware. Davies was instrumental in the founding of the College of New Jersey (now Princeton University). He spent eleven months in England raising money to build Nassau-Hall, the first permanent building on campus. Both Davies and Gibbons were prominent dissenters from Anglican orthodoxy and it is likely that they would have met during Davies' fund-raising mission to England. They evidently carried on a correspondence, which Gibbons quotes from in his sermon. Davies served as the fourth president of the college until his early death at 37. ESTC lists three 1761 editions - one with p. 31 paginated (as in this copy), one without pagination, and a third with a variant imprint for sale in America. MORTIMER, Thomas.
London: printed for S. Hooper,, 1761. An early guide to the stock exchange Duodecimo (171 x 99 mm). Mid-20th-century brown polished half calf by Bayntun-Riviere, twin green morocco spine labels, marbled boards. Engraved folding table. Complete with terminal advertisement leaf. Bookplate of British accountant Sir Harry Page (1911-1985), President of the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy in 1968. Spine lightly sunned, otherwise the binding in fine condition; contents evenly browned, some negligible light spotting and offsetting. A very good copy. Fourth edition, following the first of the same year, of what is generally considered the first guide to the stock exchange, based on the author's own experience of losing "a genteel fortune" in 1756. Thomas Mortimer (1730-1810) was one of the earliest experts on the operation of the stock exchange established in the coffee-house of London's Change Alley. Every Man his Own Broker is a practical guide for would-be speculators, warning about the dangers of getting involved with brokers and gives a valuable insight into the financial world of mid-eighteenth-century London. Mortimer was the first to write about the terms "bear" and "bull" markets. A popular guide, with fourteen editions published within forty years. ESTC T87413; Goldsmiths' 9693; Higgs 2517.

STEUART, Sir James Denham.
Tübingen: Johann Georg Cotta,, 1761. Octavo (209 x 140 mm). Uncut in recent half mottled calf and marbled boards, spine decorated in blind, red morocco label lettered gilt. With a large folding table opposite p. 54. Printed in Gothic type. Pale dampmark to upper margin of first few leaves, occasional marginal dust soiling; a very good copy, entirely uncut. Very rare first edition, written by Steuart whilst in Tübingen, where he had settled in 1757 with his wife and son under the protection of the Duke of Würtemberg, to whom the work is dedicated (in French). In it, Steuart attempted to disentangle the inextricable perplexities of the German mints. The work was translated from a manuscript by Christoph Friedrich Schott, and was only first published in English in 1805 as A Dissertation upon the Doctrine and Principles of Money, applied to the German Coin in volume five of the Works, political, metaphysical, and chronological.Carpenter, Dialogue in Political Economy, 25; Higgs 2537; Holzmann & Bohatta VI, 156; Kress 5986; Lipsius & Leitzmann, p. 2.[Attributes: First Edition]

MOSES AUSTIN
MOSES AUSTIN (1761-1821). Austin lived in Missouri until 1820, when he left for Texas. He received a grant to bring 300 colonists to Texas and returned to Missouri for this enterprise. He died while in Missouri but requested his son Stephen carry out his plans for Texas. ANS. 1pg. 7 ¾" x 3 ¾". August 15, 1812. No place [Missouri]. An autograph note signed "Moses Austin" to Mr. Buyler: "I will thank you to send by my Negro Boy as much meal as he can bring also be so good as to send me 50 pounds of flower in one end of one of the bags...". In 2015, Heritage Auctions sold for $4,000 an 1827 document by Elias Bates, the nephew of Moses Austin, liberating one of his former slaves several years after Austin died. The auction house erroneously stated that "This may be the only extant document associating Austin with the ownership of one of his slaves." Obviously, this statement is not true because of the existence of this Austin document. The document is tanned and light in spots and somewhat brittle.
