[Click Below for Full Description]

Giovan Battista PIRANESI (Mogliano Veneto 1720 - Roma 1778)
Acquaforte e bulino, circa 1761, firmata in lastra in alto a sinistra. [Click Below for Full Description]

PRINGLE John
1761. The Third Edition Enlarged. Engraved vignette to the title page. Light browning, otherwise very good in full contemporary calf, a little rubbed and stained, some leather loss to the fore-edge of the boards, chipping at the tail of the spine. xxviii, 435pp. [35pp.] Table 1p. errata. A. Millar, D. Wilson, and T. Durham, Pringle is seen as the founder of Military Medicine. Under the patronage of the Earl of Stair, commander of the Army in Flanders, he was made Physician to the Army. He served on campaign from 1742 down to the Peace of Aix-la-Chappelle in 1748, including at Culloden, having been made Physician General in 1744. ?Pringle's great innovations encompassed both administration and epidemiology. It was probably owing to his efforts that military hospitals were first recognized as neutral territory and safely set up near a battlefield. At the battle of Dettingen in 1743, the last in which a British king led his army into battle, British and French hospitals under a temporary red cross and with the agreement of the duc de Noailles, the French commander, were set up side by side, each taking wounded from the other army if the occasion arose. he did not publish his Observations on the Diseases of the Army until 1752. This watershed work has probably not received the credit it deserves. Like his countryman James Lind, Pringle had quickly recognized hospitals as the chief causes of sickness and death in the army. His special contributions were the first scientific account of epidemiology in the field and prevention of cross-infection.? [ODNB] Attractive C18th engraved … [Click Below for Full Description]

KANT) SPAZIER, Johann Gottlieb Karl
Very rare treatment of Kant's Critique of Judgement, by J.C.K. Spazier (1761-1805). Adickes 2177. WorldCat locates only four copies: Worms, Köln, Strasbourg and Columbia NY. Though called a 'new edition', it is certainly the first appearance under this title. Adickes says it may be identical with the same publisher's 'Versuch einer kurzen und fasslichen Darstellung der teleologischen Principien: ein Auszug aus Kants Kritik der teleologischen Urtheilskraft', 1791, which is equally rare. 'In 1798, Spazier became known as a philosophical writer with his Ueber Kants Kritik der Urteilskraft . He is almost the only representative of the German Enlightenment who advocated a radical critique of religion that tended towards atheism and materialism' (Dictionary of Eighteenth-Century German Philosophers). The accompanying copy of Schelling's Bruno is a first edition. PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Small 8vo, [ii], 230, 180 pp., contemporary marbled boards with handwritten spine label and shelf sticker, fairly rubbed, pastedown with early ownership signature, front free endpaper with contents listed in early ink, title-page with a pen mark, printed blue wrapper bound in at front, both texts texts clean and fresh. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

WINTHROP, JOHN
Edes and Gill, Boston, 1761. VERY RARE FIRST-HAND ACCOUNT OF THE FIRST PUBLICLY FUNDED AMERICAN SCIENCE EXPEDITION: JOHN WINTHROP'S VOYAGE TO NEWFOUNDLAND TO PARTICIPATE IN THE INTERNATIONAL EFFORT TO TIME THE 1761 TRANSIT OF VENUS AND THUS DETERMINE THE DISTANCE BETWEEN THE EARTH AND THE SUN. A LIKELY PRESENTATION COPY FROM JOHN WINTHROP TO NATHANIEL APPLETON. Transits of Venus and Their Importance: By chance, the Sun is about 400 times larger in diameter than the Moon, and about 400 times farther from the Earth. As a result, the two bodies have roughly the same apparent size; and on the rare occasions when the Moon is located directly between the Sun and Earth, the Sun is blotted out, with only its corona visible - thus, a total eclipse. Other objects in the solar system do not have such a precisely calibrated relationship between their size and distance from the Earth, and as a result when they pass between the Earth and the Sun, their passage, when visible at all to earthbound astronomers, appears as a small black dot moving across the Sun's face. This phenomenon is known as a transit. Since Mercury and Venus are the only two significant celestial objects that pass between the Earth and Sun (setting aside the Moon and the occasional comet), it is only those planets that are observed to transit the Sun. In 1716 Edmond Halley published a paper in the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London (written in Latin, then the international language of science, and titled "Methodus singularis qua Solis Parallaxis sive distantia a Terra .") in which he argued that … [Click Below for Full Description]
