      - Lisbonne [i.e. Paris], s.n., 1762. A La Haye, Chez Jean Neaulme, Libraire, 1762. Full leather. Very Good +. The 1762 original edition, complete in 4 volumes.

Rafael D. Mérida (1762-1828) began his career as a bureaucrat in Caracas, participated in the early patriot movement, served as minister of Justice under Bolívar in 1813-14, but turned against the Liberator in 1816. In his Representación, Mérida recapitulates Bolívar's errors, military and political, in a finely honed philippic. He is no less kind to Miranda, whom he nearly accuses of treason. Palau states that this piece was actually printed in the U.S., and the paper on which it is printed would certainly substantiate that claim, as does the fact that it is held by the Library Company of Philadelphia, famous for its collection of Spanish-language books printed in Philadelphia with false imprint information. An extremely rare piece of Bolívariana. => This copy belonged to one of Mérida's family.

        La France Agricole et Marchande.

Avignon: [publisher not identified],, 1762. 2 volumes, octavo (124 × 198 mm). Contemporary catspaw roan, green morocco label, spine lettered and decorated in gilt, board edges gilt, marbled endpapers, green edges. 11 folding plates (2 maps, of which 1 is hand-coloured). Boards a little scuffed, with a little surface worm damage, occasional minor foxing. An excellent set. First edition of this economic utopia. Published anonymously, as were many of Goyon de la Plombanie's works. Foreshadowing the effects of increased production on society, the results of industrialisation, urban migration and overcrowding, he proposed the use of cartography to document natural borders and indicate ownership and the improvement of road transport with the use of steam engines and a form of locomotive - technical advances well ahead of his time. Similarly, his fiscal proposals, witholding tax, land and property taxes, were all introduced after the French Revolution. Little is known about him (d. 1808); he was one of the editors of the Journal Economique, and after an army career turned his attention to economic questions. He wrote several works in which he denounced the insufficient supply of money and the increase in interest rates, always proposing reform of agriculture and economics.

A Defence of the United Company of Merchants of England, Trading to the East-Indies, and their Servants, (particularly those at Bengal) against the Complaints of the Dutch East-India Company...

London, 1762. Quarto. [4],71pp. plus folding plan. Quite clean. Very good. Disbound The Seven Years War (known in America as the French & Indian War) has often been considered the first "world war" because the European powers contested with each other in every sphere of the globe. This led to clashes in India between the French, British, Dutch, and Portuguese. This is a rebuttal to a memorial published by the Dutch East India company in which the Dutch East India Company "exculpate their servants in India from the charge contained in the Memorial of the 14th August, of committing hostilities against the English in Bengal...and even to introduce and give colour to other complaints, no way relative to the English Memorial." It details aggressionsby the Dutch against the British in India from 1756 to the time of writing. The plan shows the fort at Bangalore. ESTC T97097; Kress 6007; Goldsmith 9776.

PROVINCE OF MASSACHUSETTS-BAY. AN ACT FOR RENDERING MORE EFFECTUAL THE LAWS ALREADY MADE RELATING TO SHINGLES, AND FOR REGULATING THE ASSIZE OF STAVES, HOOPS AND CLAPBOARDS.

[Boston. ]. 1762 - Broadside, 14 1/2 x 9 3/4 inches, printed in two columns. A few chips and old stain along lower edge. Two small closed tears in upper edge, with no loss. Very good. Expertly matted, and protected with a mylar sheet. A rare printing of an important law regulating manufactures in colonial New England. Massachusetts had one of the most dynamic economies in colonial British America, with much of the colony's wealth coming from manufactures and exports. It was clear to colonial leaders that the quality and reputation of their goods was vitally important to growing trade, so they set about to guarantee and regulate Massachusetts products. The present Act sets standards for the production of shingles, staves, hoops, and clapboards, giving exact specifications for the size and quality of each. The specifications for each product is clearly defined (for example, shingles should be between fifteen and eighteen inches long and free of sap, worm holes, or shakes). Deficient products would be destroyed, the materials sold, and the funds generated from the sale distributed to the local community for the benefit of the poor. A system of "surveyors and cullers" is also created to check the quality of the finished products, and penalties would also be imposed for those quality control officers found to be corrupt. Other penalties are set for ship captains who agreed to transport products that had not been approved. The act was passed by the Massachusetts legislature at their June 1762 session, published on June 12th, and was to remain in force for three years commencing in March 1763. We are able to locate only three copies of this legal broadside, at the American Antiquarian Society, Massachusetts Historical Society, and Historical Society of Pennsylvania. Rare and interesting evidence of the development of governmental regulation of the economy in colonial Massachusetts. BRISTOL B2295. SHIPTON & MOONEY 41281. FORD, MASSACHUSETTS BROADSIDES 1270.

A Genève, 1762. - in-12. XXIII. 102pp. 1f. Ownership inscription of "James Caldwell" to front pastedowns of both volumes; note apparently presenting the set to the "Congregatonal Library" by "Mrs C Strong", believed to be Celia Strong (1826-1887), wife of Reverend John C. Strong, to pastedown of volume one. Blind library stamp, to title page, "American Congregational Association, Boston". Some instances of pencil annotations, including two to volume one both referring to the necessity of converting the Indian subcontinent by force. Binding has been professionally repaired, including the reback and new corners, original boards showing signs of historic heavy wear including some leather cracking, small chips and gouges. Lockman was known primarily as a translator, and wrote a number of well respected translations primarily from French.         Mappa Gubernii Orelensis Auctore J. Schmidt.

      - Highly detailed rare map covering the area of the Oryol Oblast in Russia, south of Moscow. The map is a result of a new survey of Russia done in the first years of the reign of Catherine the Great (from 1762) by the Geographical Department of the Academy of Science in St. Petersburg. The survey was done by Johann Treskot (1719-1786) and Johann Schmidt (1732-1786) until the mid 1770s. "By January 1763, Schmidt had 9 large maps ready in manuscript form—most of them in the Baltic countries while one, prepared by Truskot, was devoted Siberia" (Bagrow, L. Russian Cartography to 1800 p. 202). The new map of Russia was published in 1776 in 23 sheets. Treskot’s and Schmidt’s survey was highly influential on the contemporary cartography of Russia. Their maps were copied in the next decade in Russia and in Europe. Today the original maps by Treskot and Schmidt are rare. Tiny tears in white margins, wide margins uncut with deckled edges, left and right white margin folded.

        La Marchande de Canards

Paris: Moyreau, 1762. Hand-coloured engraving on laid paper by Moyreau. Very good condition apart from some overall light soiling, minor foxing, and a bit of mild rippling. A fine composition showing a group of cavalrymen congregating oustide of a duck merchant's cottage. This beautifully coloured print is one of many engravings Jean Moyreau (1690-1762) made of Wouwerman's paintings. Born into a family of Dutch artists in Haarlem in 1619, the prolific draughtsman and painter Philips Wouwerman was primarily renowned for his lively battle and hunting scenes. After an early elementary introduction to the art of painting by his father, Paulus Joostens, he trained with the landscape painter Jan Wynants (1620-1679) and briefly worked in the Hamburg studio of the history painter Everard Decker (d. 1647) around 1638. Wouwerman later returned to Haarlem, where he joined the Guild of St. Luke, which later elected him to the office of vinder in 1646. His elegantly rendered, distinctive works, which are characterized by their luminous colour and detailed, animated treatment of figures and landscape alike, were extremely popular in the seventeenth century as well as the nineteenth century, during which they were zealously collected. In addition to his hunting scenes, Wouwerman's varied and substantial repertoire of subjects included military and battle scenes, landscapes, travellers, animals and genre subjects. Cf. Benezit, Dictionnaire des Peintres, Sculpteurs, Dessinateurs, et Graveurs , vol 14, p. 723.

PRELIMINARY ARTICLES OF PEACE, BETWEEN HIS BRITANNICK MAJESTY, THE MOST CHRISTIAN KING, AND THE CATHOLICK KING. SIGNED AT FONTAINEBLEAU, THE 3d DAY OF NOVEMBER, 1762

London. 1762.. 23pp. printed in double-column format in parallel French and English. Quarto. Recent half morocco and marbled boards. Titlepage lightly soiled. Very good. The first publication of one of the most far-reaching and significant peace treaties to deal with North America. By terms of this treaty, printed here for final ratification and made official in 1763, major shifts in the American balance of power take place. The French are almost entirely expelled from North America, as their Canadian possessions and all lands east of the Mississippi are ceded to the British. The remainder of Louisiana goes to the Spanish. The Spanish give up claims in Florida to the British, who also receive the Grenadines and Dominica. All the French get is the return of Martinique, Guadeloupe, and several smaller Caribbean islands. The new balance of power set the stage for the American Revolution and the rise of the power of the United States. HOWES P569. SABIN 65044. SERVIES 423. DAVENPORT 148.
