Hard cover with the original marbled boards. Has been rebound to replace the spine leather about 25 years ago. Much shelf wear is found on the outer cover and top, bottom and edges of the paper pages. The book starts with the July, 1760 issue and ends with the December, 1760 issue.& The list of engravings are:& Genius, Truth and Science. Handed colored- American Goldfinch. Music- Belinda. Fort William in Bengal. View of the bridge in Hampton Court. Music- Reconcilement. Admiral Saunders. Hand colored- Red and black Manakin. Temple at Mount Laurium *this has a wear mark through the paper on this page. Music- Polly's Charms. Hand colored- Sapphore crowned Parrakeet. Map- Jamaica. Music- Retirement. Mr. Pope's House, Twickenham. Music- Jesse. Floor plan of the Royal burial vault. Temple of Corinth. Some of these are large fold-out sheets. & , Vice-Admiral Sir Charles Saunders. At 46, this bulky man with fierce baggy eyes had seen 32 years of service in the British navy. Despite his deceptively quiet personality, Saunders carried out his orders with dogged determination. His career up to this point was marked by no outstanding sea victories yet he had a reputation for being one of the best and luckiest officers in the Royal Navy. Now he was placed in overall command of a quarter of the Royal Navy. , September 12 saw a good deal of activity on the part of the Royal Navy, causing Montcalm to wonder where Wolfe was with the main part of his army. Saunders had stationed his fleet opposite the Beauport Lines, he didn't give the French a moments peace all day or night. On September 18, Admiral Saunders and Brigadier General George Townshend accepted the surrender of Quebec. Yet Saunders accomplishments did not end with the conquest of Quebec, he also provided the garrison with cannons, ammunition and provisions before he left, even to the extent of reducing his ships' stores. It may be that Quebec might well have been recaptured by the French under Francis de Gaston, Chevalier de Levis the following spring if not for the troops and supplies Saunders had left behind. Horace Wallpole once said of Saunders, "No man said less and deserves more." He died in 1775 and is buried in Westminster Abbey near the Wolfe memorial. Superbly illustrated with very fine engravings throughout including a very finely engraved full-page frontispiece by Novelli, a beautifully engraved title page in red and black, with finely engraved vignettes and head and tail pieces throughout, a very fine full page engraving of the author by Agostino Caracci, and with 20 very beautifully executed full page engravings by J. Leonardus from the designs of Bernardo Castello from 1617. The “Argomentos” all with elaborate engraved and intricate borders, the first large multi-line initial of each canto finely historiated with engraved figures, and additionally, 94 fine and large engravings are included within the text after designs by Novelli and executed for the edition by Leonardus. 4to, in fine full antique vellum over stiff boards with yap edges and marbled endpapers, the spines with a brick-red morocco title labels gilt lettered and decorated and a smaller brown morocco volume labels also gilt decorated and lettered. An Oates Family copy with engraved armorial plates of William Edward, Edward and Robert Washington Oates, founders of the Oates Museum and the Oates Collection at University of Southampton. (2), XXX, 364; XII, 360. A wonderful set in exemplary condition, extremely fresh and clean, the paper unpressed and the impression is bold, dark and fine. A RARE, IMPORTANT AND VERY BEAUTIFUL EDITION OF THIS CLASSIC OF ITALIAN LITERATURE. The edition has long been considered one of the richest and most magnificent of the many editions of Tasso printed over the centuries. Poet, prose writer and literary theorist, Tasso was successor to and deviator from the tradition of Boiardo and Ariosto, he gave to the court of Ferrara the third of the great ottava rima epic romances celebrating the Este ancestry, Gerusalemme Liberata, and the purest example of Renaissance pastoral drama, Aminta. Even before its end, his life became a legend of poetic madness and wandering. Born in Sorrento, he shared the political exile of his father, Bernardo, and began his literary studies and his long experience of Italian courts in Urbino. He attended the universities of Padua and of Bologna, at 18 published Rinaldo, a chivalric poem in 12 cantos, and in 1565 took service with Cardinal Luigi d'Este. Although he completed the Liberata in 1575, Tasso was never to be satisfied with it in relation to neo-Aristotelian canons of epic poetry or to Counter-Reformation religious orthodoxy, and restlessly he consulted scholars on one score and ecclesiastical inquisitors on the other. In 1577 he was imprisoned for a paranoid display of violence in the presence of Lucrezia d'Este. He escaped to the south but, following another outburst on his return to Ferrara in 1579, was shut up in the hospital of S. Anna, to remain there until 1586. The Liberata was finally published in 1581, but Tasso continued to regard the poem as unfinished while it circulated in several editions from that year on. Released from S. Anna, he went to Mantua under the protection of Duke Vincenzo Gonzaga, and thence into a ceaseless vagabondage that took him to Genoa, Rome, Naples and Florence. He received hospitality from religious orders and academies, from the Medici, from the marquis Giambattista Manso, and from Pope Clement VIII and his nephew, to whom Tasso dedicated the only authorized version of his epic, much reworked and retitled.

        Plan von Fort Cumberland auf der insel St. Laurenti

      circa 1760. Gouache, painted on fine watermarked laid paper, in excellent condition. 19 7/8 x 28 1/8 inches. A rare fictional manuscript plan of Fort Cumberland in Canada. This fascinating manuscript map purports to depict the English Fort Cumberland on the island of St. Lawrence. Closer research has uncovered that there was no Fort Cumberland on a St. Lawrence island. It is possible that the artist is referring to Fort Cumberland, located on the Bay of Fundy in Canada, which is near the St. Lawrence River. Originally named Fort Beausejour, the fort was erected by the French in 1751. It was captured by the British in 1755 and renamed Fort Cumberland. The fort was located on the coast rather than an island and was used to command the territory between Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. The location as well as the complicated layout of the ramparts suggests that this representation is fictional rather than illustrative. The buildings, which are all identified in a numbered key, resemble medieval architecture rather than eighteenth century design, signifying that this fine painting is a product of the artist's romantic vision rather than a depiction of an actual place. Accounts of the exploration of North America and Canada circulated throughout Britain and the Continent, and it is most likely that this magnificent painted plan was based on these texts. Although fictional, this is a fascinating glimpse of eighteenth century cartography, which often relied more on written accounts and hypothetical theories than actual geographic surveys.

Detaillierte Darstellung der Befestigungsanlagen mit den fünf Bastionen benannt nach dem Bistumsheiligen und vier Bischöfen: St. Paulus, Christoph Bernhard, Maximilian, Ferdinand und Friedrich Christian von Münster; mit Schanzen, Außenwerken, Haupt- und Nebengräben. Die Legende Nr. 1 - 30 oben links benennt die Details des Festungswerkes mit Kapelle, Kasernen, Zeughaus, Brunnen, Schmiede, Ställe, Souterrains, Pulver-Magazin, Laboratorium, Ein- und Ausfluss des Mohrbaches u.a. In der Stadt sind nummerisch über die Legende die Kirche, Burgmannshöfe, Franzsikaner-Kloster, Rathaus und Stadttore, zusätzlich auch handschriftlich die Amts-Rentmeisterei, Hof des Kloster-Dechanten, eine Mühle, die Esplanade zwischen Stadt und Zitadelle, Gärten und Cämpe, Wiesen, die grosse Masch (eine gemeine Weide) und die Straßen nach Münster und Osnabrück, Füchtel und von Cloppenburg verzeichnet. Unten links eine Detailzeichnung: Grundriss einer Bastion mit ihren "Bomben-freyen Souterrains" mit handschriftlichen Erläuterungen. Oben links Kompassrose.Der Bau der Vechtaer Zitadelle begann 1666 (1667) unter Fürstbischof Christoph Bernhard von Galen. Im Verlaufe des Siebenjährigen Krieges wurde Vechta durch kur-hannoversche Truppen belagert und kampflos an sie übergeben. Während dieser Besatzungszeit entstand dieser Plan von Johann Anthon Overheide, seit 1738 Leutnant im Ingenieurkorps der hannoverschen Armee, 1730 - 1743 Conducteur und Festungsbauingenieur in Göttingen. Als solcher war er in der Festungsbaukunst, in Mathematik und im Zeichnen von Festungsanlagen geschult und geübt. Der Maßstabes der Zeichnung ist in Calenberger Ruten angegeben, sie zeigt auch die von den hannoverschen Truppen vorgenommenen Veränderungen, so den Tête de Pont, dessen Anlage hier mit "anno 1760" datiert wird (als Detail unten rechts dargestellt) und die in der Zitadelle neu angelegten Lunetten, Traversen und Reduits. Schon 1769 wurde die Anlage geschleift und abgetragen.Fein ausgeführte Zeichnung in Grün-, Rot- und Grautönen mit getuschter schwarzer und grauer Umrandungslinie. Dekorative und farblich ansprechende Darstellung in bestem Erhalt. Interessantes Dokument zur Stadtgeschichte mit dem Zustand der Zitadelle kurz vor ihrer Zerstörung.

All 89 plates, including American ports (Quebec, Louisbourg, Nouvelle orleans, Fort Dauphin, Cayenne, Ville Marie), plus Table (index) at rear. These are b&w (as issued) copperplate engravings, on laid paper, all in very good or better condition. Le Rouge was trained as a military engineer, but did quite a number of cartographic works, often with a military slant, between 1740-1780 (see Moreland & Bannister, ANTIQUE MAPS). Listed as Phillips' entry 2975. A rather uncommon small atlas. Neat owners signatures.. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

A fine, wide-margined copy. --- Dibner 57; Horblit 31a; Howes F320; PMM 199 (all describing the 1751-54 original edition in 3 parts); Ford 79, 95 (this edition). - Franklin's most important technical publication, "the most important scientific book of eighteenth-century America" (PMM), in which he proved that lightning is electrical and deduced the positive and negative nature of an electrical charge. The third edition was printed in a small number and is very rare, much rarer than the first edition. It is a reprint of the second edition of 1754. The last time, the first two parts appared in an auction was in 1970. The third part of this edition, but designated "fourth edition" on the title, was published in 1765 and is exceedingly rare (no entry in WorldCat, only one repositiory listed in Copac). WorldCat list no copy of the third edition in public libraries in the USA; Copac locates 7 copies in the U.K..

Facsimiles of the author's signature are printed on p. iv and the first page of text. This is an ex-library copy with a perforation on the title page and an acquisition number and withdrawn stamp at the foot of the first page of the Preface. Leaf B1 is in facsimile, else this is a very good copy. The first edition, first printing of Hannah Glasse's book on confectionary . It was later reprinted by J. Cooke ca. 1770, under the title 'The Complete Confectioner', and again in 1772. In 1799 it was issued in 10 parts, edited by Mrs. Maria Wilson; these were later issued in book form in 1800. Rare in first edition. ESTC N3215. See Oxford, pp. 90-91, but he lists only the later editions printed by Cooke.

Bell’esemplare in ottimo stato di una raccolta uscita sotto gli auspici dell’Accademia Granellesca, i cui animatori furono i fratelli Gozzi, Carlo in particolare, strenui difensori della tradizione letteraria e linguistica. Le quattro egloghe sono: Il Moreto d’autore incerto, ma attribuito a Gasparo Gozzi, (1713-1786); Il Batino di Francesco Bracciolini (1566-1645); Celeo e l’Orto di Bernardino Baldi (1553-1617); Pane di Marco Aurelio Olimpio Nemesiano nel volgarizzamento di Tommaso Giuseppe Farsetti. A fine map of Asia by the prolific cartographic publisher Tobias Lotter. Tobias Conrad Lotter married into Matthaeus Seutter's well-established publishing business. He became one of the most prolific cartographic publishers on the Continent, and produced a vast array of fine maps ranging in scope from double hemispheres to celestial charts. Lotter took over Seutter's business in 1756 and continued to publish Seutter's reworked plates until his death in 1777. Like Seutter's and Lotter's maps are distinguished by their rich colours and ornate cartouches. This beautiful map of Asia is considered one of Lotter's best maps. Covering the whole of Asia, the map includes the East Indies and the tip of New Guinea. The fictional Terra de la Compagnie is included above Japan, and Korea is shown as a peninsula. Japan is connected to the mainland by a country identified as Terra Yeco. The most impressive portion of the map is the depiction of southeast Asia, as Indochina, Indonesia and the Philippines gradually assume their true outlines.

Joints with very slight rubbing and flaking, corners a bit worn, two covers with small loss of patina from insect activity, one page with faint (watercolor?) blur, light stain on rear endpapers of one volume, a few other trivial imperfections, but A VERY NEARLY FINE CONTEMPORARY SET, the entirely unrestored original bindings completely sound and showing little wear, and THE TEXT UNUSUALLY FRESH AND CLEAN. Laurence Sterne (1713-68) is the perfect example of an author whose scandalous personal behavior initially overshadowed his achievements as a writer. The journalist and editor Robert Shelton Mackenzie said in his "Noctes Ambrosianæ" of 1854 that Sterne was "so infamous [in] his private character, that when he entered the pulpit to preach in York Minster, of which he was a prebend, many of the congregation rose from their seats and left the cathedral." Most notorious, perhaps, was Sterne's membership in good standing in the "Club of Demoniacks," a group of Yorkshire rakehells who met frequently in the half-ruined Skelton Castle to undertake heavy drinking and coarse jests. At least as outrageous, Sterne made no attempt to cover up his infidelities. Even DNB, which normally strains to put the behavior of its subjects in the best possible light, says that Sterne's "deficiency in self-control induced a condition of moral apathy." Still, none of this should diminish the importance of, or achievement represented by, "Tristram Shandy," the dynamic work that made Sterne famous and that is generally regarded as the first novel dominated by a conscious psychological theory. Full of digressions, and with very little in the way of a conventional plot, Sterne's great contribution to the English novel consists mainly of an exposition of the author's personality and whimsical imagination. The first two volumes of the work were greatly (and surprisingly) successful, caused an immediate sensation, and generated several piracies and imitations. Partly to authenticate the copies issuing from the Becket & De Hondt press, Sterne decided to sign the later volumes as they appeared--both the 1762 first and our 1767 second edition of volume V (which was issued along with volume VI), the 1765 printing of volume VII (issued with VIII), and the 1767 printing of volume IX. It has been estimated that this precaution required Sterne to sign his name 12,750 times. Our copy of volume VII may be identified as the first state by the presence of the errata on the verso of the title page; corrections were made to the text for the later state. The work is normally sold in mixed editions, as here, because the first editions of volumes I and II numbered only about 200 copies and are, thus, very hard to come by. Sets combining one printing or another come into the marketplace with regularity, but one seldom sees excellent contemporary copies like the present one.

Lovely contemporary full nut brown calf binding with gilt lines and gauffered edges. Some hinges cracked, a couple of volumes have lost their title labels. Some transference to endpapers and pastedowns, some chipping to heads and tails of spine, some marks to boards here and there but generally this is a very strong clean set, with good lustrous and largely clean leather. 107b

An archivist and historian, Gruner served from 1749 as Hofmeister with Prince Christian von Anhalt-Schaumburg, whom he frequently accompanied on trips, collecting mineralogical and other natural specimens. This survey of the geography, geology and physics of the glaciers and glacial mountains of Switzerland (and parts of present-day Italy) was his most important work. The first two volumes contain detailed topographical and mineralogical descriptions of the areas covered, based in part on previous writers and on correspondence with contemporaries. Concluding volume II is a chapter comparing the glacial mountains of the Swiss Alps to those of northern Europe, and in the third volume Gruner analyzes glaciers generally, discussing the physical characteristics of ice fields and glaciers, various types of glaciers, their altitude, beauty, chemical and mineral properties, and age. He attempts to explain the presence of erratic blocks, whose origin he recognized, though he could not correctly account for the way in which they had been carried to their present locations. The work concludes with two interesting chapters on potential uses of glaciers and on the dangers awaiting the mountain explorer.& & The striking engravings show high mountain views, many graphically depicting the enormity of glaciers 250 years before their present state of rapid regression. Most important is Gruner’s large mineralogical map (often lacking), “Die Eisgebyrge des Schweizerlandes, mit allen dabey vorkommenden Mineralien,” the first such map for Switzerland. Drawn and engraved in Paris by A. This copy is in the first state of what Hazen describes as " perhaps the most distinguished piece of printing to come from the Press at Strawberry Hill" (Hazen 7, p. 49)., Horace Walpole (1717-1797) was a politician, a patron of the arts and an author. Today he probably best known as the author of the gothic novel, 'The Castle of Otranto' and for his home in Twickenham, Strawberry Hill. Here Walpole indulged his taste for the gothic, slowly transforming the house into the finest example of Georgian Gothic revival architecture in the country. The house gave its name to Walpole's private press which was founded in June 1757. While the press published many of Walpole's own works it did not publish his most famous work, 'The Castle of Otranto' and in later life Walpole would describe his 'Anecdotes of Painting in England' as "‘the only thing I ever published of any use." Hazen it seems disagrees with this sentiment as did Thomas Dibdin, who described the 'Pharsalia' as the "most perfect specimen of that press.", 4to 11" - 13" tall, [3]ff., [1]-525, [1] pp .

Excellent. Rare first edition of the funeral-book of Maria Barbara of Portugal, Queen-consort of Spain and wife of Ferdinand VI, with a large folding plate of her catafalque. As with many books of exequies for European monarchs printed in America, the volume appeared over a year after the Queen's death in Madrid in August 1758, subsequent to her funeral exequies held at the Cathedral of Lima on 4 September 1759. The volume's folding engraving depicts a four-tier catafalque with six pairs of Ionic columns and eight obelisks, of which the four largest are crowned by the arms of the Spanish monarchy: a castle tower and a lion with its paws resting on twin globes. The Queen's casket is shown on a dias in the center of the monument, surrounded by elaborately wrought candelabra and scrollwork-a visible testament to French rococo influence in the court of Spain during the mid-18th C. Below the catafalque are the signatures of its engraver Camacho and its designer and builder, the architect Antonio Bejarano Loayza; a year after Ferdinand VI died in 1759, heartbroken and distraught, Loayza designed his catafalque as well.Among the work's gathering of dedicatory and elegiac verse-sonnets, decasyllables, octavas, décimas, romances, acrostics and other forms popular in Perú at the time-of special note are two unusual folded woodcuts presenting a large, diamond-shaped acrostic, and a self-described "eccentric labyrinth" of décimas in the shape of a spiraling horn.       London: Printed by John Baskerville, Printer to the University, 1760. An outstanding copy in an ornate contemporary red morocco binding with green on red leather onlays and extensive gilt decoration. A notoriously difficult book to determine with numerous permutations of cancelled and uncancelled leaves. The title page to this copy is dated 1760 and importantly priced at "Six Shillings and Six Pence, unbound" and therefore Gaskell's First edition, Group One (whereas slightly later copies were priced at "Seven/Eight Shillings and Six Pence, unbound"), however this copy conforms to a rate state of which Gaskell writes "There is however a rare state - I know of only three copies - in which sections x-2b, 2N-2Q, the 'occasional prayers', are found in a new setting....these reset sections are something of a puzzle, since, while they are obviously later, they occur...with group 1 (6s. 6d.) title-pages (with border), which is of course an early variety." As stated this copy includes the 'occasional prayers' with the text ending on Qq4b; "A form of Prayer with Thanksgiving... upon the Twenty-fifith Day of October; being the Day which his Majesty began his happy Reign" is present, Queen Charlotte is mentioned and has a proclamation dated 7 October 1761 is also present. The text is arranged in a single column within Baskerville's decorative 'lozenge-and-star' border; the same border appears on the title page. Contemporary full red morocco binding with central onlay in blue and green morocco, stamped "JHS" to the centre, with angels and stars about, double gilt sunbursts; border with urns and floral motifs, fillets; spine with 5 raised bands and gilt decoration to the compartments. All edges gilt, original marbled end papers; binding very good with a little general wear and rubbing, gilt generally bright, front joint with short cracks but remaning strong; head/tail of spine and corners a little more worn, with boards showing through to upper corners. Contents clean and tight, wide margins, engraved contemporary bookplate of Henrietta Jane Arnold to the front paste-down with a couple of later autographed gift labels of the same, stating gift of the prayer book to her grandaugther dated December 1842; small light ink mark to the fore-edge, otherwise contents appears unmarked. A very good copy in a fine contemporary binding of a rate state. Printed in the famous Baskerville Type by one of the greatest printers of the 18th Century, John Baskerville. Bindings rubbed, hinges cracked on Volume 1, but still holding firm, 12 mm (½ inch) hole to top of hinge on Volume 3, Volume 2 top hinge has 40 mm (1½ inch) crack, but still holding firm, other hinges rubbed but all covers holding firm, corners worn with board showing through at most tips, green labels unevenly faded, 4 pages have very small holes to top margins, not affecting text, 1 top margin has very small chip, all paper flaws but not affecting text, 2 pages lightly dusty and a few top margins have a light brown horizontal stain, not affecting text, 3 pages have tips of corners missing, paper flaws, some occasional light age-browning due to different paper stock used, small neat old ink inscription to the top margin of each title page, 3 ink shelf numbers to top of the first free endpaper of each volume, occasional small spots and creases as is usual in old books, otherwise a very good set of this classic work. This edition first published in Geneva in 1739 is known as the "Jesuits" edition although the 2 editors Le Seur and Jacquier were Minims not Jesuits. The text of the Principia is that of the third edition, each volume contains a separate book of Principia and the 3rd Volume contains in addition "Traite sur le flux et reflux de la mer. Par mr. Daniel Bernoully": Volume 3, pages 133-246. "De causa physica fluxus et refluxus maris. A d. d. Mac-Laurin": Volume 3, pages 247-282. "Inquisitio physica in causam fluxus et refluxus maris. A d. d. Euler": Volume 3, pages 283-274. These were three prizewinning essays submitted in 1724 to the Academie des Sciences to resolve "the Problem relating to the Motion of the Tides from the theory of gravity". The third volume also contains a long Introductio ad lunae theoriam Newtonionam pages 537-677. The Jesuits' edition is valued for its copious commentary. Nouvelle Edition, revue & corrigee. 12 Volumes, 12mo, contemporary mottled calf, gilt lettered spine-labels (rubbed), some moderate wear, contemporary writing on preliminary pages of a volume and a few chips to leather but still in very good condition. A very scarce early complete set of Florent Carton Dancourt's dramatic works. The plays of Dancourt are faithful descriptions of the manners of the time, and as such have real historical value. The characters are drawn with a realistic touch that led to his being styled by Charles Palissot the Teniers of comedy. He is very successful in his delineation of low life, and especially of the peasantry. The dialogue is sparkling, witty and natural. Many of the incidents of his plots were derived from actual occurrences in the fast and scandalous life of the period, and several of his characters were drawn from well-known personages of the day. Most of the plays incline to the type of farce rather than of pure comedy. Voltaire defined his talent in the words: "What Regnard was in respect to Moliere in the high comedy, Dancourt was in the farce." (French: "Ce que Regnard était à l'égard de Molière dans la haute comédie, le comédien Dancourt l'était dans la farce.") The Great Britain Coasting Pilot was the result of the first systematic survey of British coastal waters. It took eight years to complete, and was used by the Royal Navy for navigating British waters for many years. The charts are notable for both their accuracy and their charm.Captain Greenvile Collins was an outstanding naval officer who became 'Hydrographer to the King' before the Coasting Pilot was published.

The final text leaf is Ll2; there are interpolated signatures (r–z) between Q and R. Binding: Contemporary red morocco framed and panelled in gilt rolls with gilt-stamped corner fleurons, board edges and turn-ins with gilt roll; later rebacked with red morocco, spine beautifully stamped in foliate and geometric designs originally gilt but now virtually entirely black/blind. An excellent example of the second state of this map to carry Lotter's imprint: an important map of the American northeast with an inset view of New York City This is the fifth state (with the 'Boston' reading) of a map originally issued by Matthaeus Seutter (1678- 1757) in 1730, but is also a fine example of one of the much-pirated Jansson-Visscher New England series of maps, first published by Visscher in 1651. The present Seutter/Lotter plate `is the first map in the [Jansson-Visscher] series to show ... the boundaries of Massachusetts, New England, New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania'. There are three states with Seutter's imprint, and after his death in 1757 his son-in-law, Tobias Conrad Lotter, inserted his own name and three further states were published. This is the second of those three states with the spelling of Boston corrected. To this map of the northeast is added the famous 'Restitutio View' of New York City, which celebrated the brief return to Dutch governance from late 1672 until February of 1674. This is one of the earliest views of the city. Adorning the inset view is a very elaborate tableau in which the Emperor, Charles VI, is shown attended by Hermes, god of commerce, Athena, goddess of wisdom, and Hera, who is standing over a chest of gold coins. Behind the divine beings, dark-skinned workers of the world carry nature's products to lay at the Emperor's feet. The Seutter / Lotter dynasty was one of the most important of all eighteenth-century German map-making firms. The business was established by Lotter's father- in-law who had trained under the renowned cartographer Johann Baptiste Homann in Nuremberg. By 1731 Seutter had been appointed Geographer to the Imperial Court. On his death, Lotter continued in the same post, and with his son Mathais Albrecht Lotter produced cartographical works of a consistently high quality throughout the 18th century. Cf. Bellissima prova, impressa su carta vergata coeva priva di filigrana, con margini, consueta piega centrale verticale, nel complesso in ottimo stato di conservazione. Opera molto rara in questa tiratura. Giovanni Battista Piranesi nasce a Mogliano Veneto o Mogliano di Mestre, vicino Venezia, nel 1720 e muore a Roma nel 1778. Si può senza dubbio considerare come il più notevole incisore del secolo, ed il maggiore artista in questa materia nel periodo che va da Rembrandt a Goya. La sua opera incisa consta di oltre 1000 lavori, realizzati dal 1743 (anno della pubblicazione della prima opera), e l?anno della sua morte. La sua produzione si può dividere in più periodi: un primo nel quale si dedica ai lavori di architettura fantastica nel quale realizza tra l?altro Prima Parte di Architetture, e Prospettive inventate ed incise da Gio. Batta Piranesi Architetto Veneziano dedicate al Sig. Nicola Giobbe (1743), i celebri Grotteschi (1750), oltre al suo capolavoro assoluto, le Carceri d?invenzione, pubblicate dal suo editore Bouchard nel 1750. Nel periodo successivo rivolge la sua attenzione sui lavori di archeologia pubblicando testi come : Trofei di Ottaviano Augusto (1753), Le Rovine del Castello dell?Acqua Giulia (1761), Le Lapidi Capitoline (1762), Il Campo Marzio dell?Antica Roma, Opera di G. B. Example belonging to the extremely rare first state out of six, before the address of the editor Bouchard & Gravier and finishing touches (engravings) were added. Beautiful proof, printed on contemporary laid paper watermark, with margins, usual vertical central fold, overall in very good conditions. The example of the print here presented is a rare collector's item. Giovanni Battista Piranesi was born at Mogliano Veneto or Mogliano di Mestre, near Venice, in 1720 and died in the whereabouts of Rome in 1778. Undoubtedly he can be thought of as being the most important engraver of his century and the leading artist in this field in the period going from Rembrandt to Goya. His catalogue comprises more than one thousand engravings, created between 1743 (the year in which his first work was published), and the year of his death. His output can be divided into distinct periods. In the first of these he devoted himself to depictions of imaginary architectures among which are Prima Parte di Architetture e Prospettive inventate ed incise da Gio. Batta Piranesi Architetto Veneziano dedicate al Sig. Nicola Giobbe [First Part of Architectures and Perspectives created and engraved by Gio. Battista Piranesi Venetian Architect dedicated to Mr. Nicola Giobbe] (1743), the famed Grotteschi [Grotesques] (1750) and, finally, his absolute masterpiece, the Carceri d'invenzione [Imaginary prisons] published by his editor Bouchard in 1750. In the following period he focused his attention on archaeology publishing works related to this topic, such as the Trofei di Ottaviano Augusto [Trophies of Octavian Augustus] (1753), Le Rovine del Castello dell'Acqua Giulia [The ruins of the Castle of Acqua Giulia...] (1761), Le Lapidi Capitoline [The Capitol Memorial Plaques] (1762), Il Campo Marzio dell'Antica Roma, Opera di G. B. Piranesi socio della reale società degli antiquari di Londra [The Campus Martius of Ancient Rome, Work by G.B. Piranesi, member of the Royal Antiquary Society of London] (1762), together with prints depicting the Lake of Albano and the towns of Cori and Paestum. His most important work in this period is the Le Antichità Romane [The Roman Antiquities], in four volumes where archaeological documentation can be seen together with remarkable achievements of the artist's imagination. Finally, in the third and last period, Piranesi's activities were characterised, as an editor, by a more commercial flavour. By this time he was already very famous and created over two hundred decorative plates depicting antiquities collected in his works Diverse maniere d'adornare i cammini [Various manners of decorating paths...] (1769) and Vasi, candelabri, cippi, sarcofagi, tripodi, lucerne ed ornamenti antichi disegnati ed incisi dal. Cav. Gio. Batt. Piranesi [Vases, chandeliers, funeral columns, sarcophaguses, tripods, oil lamps and ancient adornments drawn and engraved by the Cav. Gio. Batt. Piranesi] (1778). Furthermore, during the length of his whole artistic career, Piranesi drew, engraved and composed his most important and significant work of art, the renowned Vedute di Roma [Views of Rome], in which his professional contentment in being an architect together with a personal pride in his Venetian origins can be witnessed in the title-page, signed as ?Giovan Battista Piranesi Architetto Veneziano" ["Giovan Battista Piranesi Venetian Architect"].       A Paris, Chez Jean Thomas Hérissant, 1760. 1760 In-8° (172x103mm), pp. (2), XXIV, 399, legatura coeva p. pelle marrone marmorizzata con titolo in oro su tassello e decori vegetali e floreali in oro entro scomparti su dorso a nervetti. Tagli rossi, sguardie in marmorizzatura policroma. Alcuni fregi tipografici ornati. Una carta ripiegata f.t. incisa su rame dei dintorni di Napoli e del Vesuvio. In fine, 5 tavv. ripiegate incise su rame con vedute del Vesuvio. Bellissimo esemplare. Ex-libris nobiliare del tempo. Prima edizione francese della "Storia e fenomeni del Vesuvio" del Della Torre (Napoli, 1755), importante descrizione delle eruzioni vesuviane avvicendatesi nei secoli. La traduzione è dell'abate Péton, che non si limitò a volgere l'opera in francese, ma la ampliò e aggiornò sino al 1760 basandosi su documenti fornitigli dal Della Torre stesso. Il Della Torre (Roma-1712-Napoli, 1782), sacerdote somasco, fu fisico e naturalista. Moncada Lo Giudice, 2167: "È forse questa la prima storia generale del Vesuvio, che prende le mosse dall'eruzione descritta da Plinio... Nel gennaio 1755 il Journal des Etrangers espresse un giudizio estremamente positivo sul lavoro, che del resto ottenne buona accoglienza nell'ambiente scientifico dell'epoca".

Numerose tabelle ed esempi numerici intercalati n.t. Bellissimo e fresco esemplare. Terza edizione, rara come tutte quelle che furono impresse, di questa vasta opera di matematica pratica in tutte le sue possibili applicazioni: commercio e mercatura, astronomia, ingegneria, agrimensura, computisteria, monetazione, insegnamento, ecc. In principio della prima parte sono presenti alcuni giochi ed anagrammi numerici del padre Paolo Andrea Buffetti. L'edizione originale dell'opera era stata pubblicata in Parma, per Paolo Monti, nell'arco di quasi un ventennio (1707-1726). Il Carisi (Correggio, 1675-Mantova, 1733) sacerdote carmelitano, fu professore di aritmetica e geometria. Riccardi, I, 265: "Uno dei buoni e piú estesi trattati di aritmetica pratica fino allora pubblicati". Poggendorff, I, 378.
