A lovely, late-18th century almandine garnet brooch celebrating the 1759 passage of Halley's Comet. During 1680 astronomer Edmund Halley travelled through France and Italy. While in Paris he observed the appearance of the comet that would come to bear his name. "In Rome he would have met astronomers who had observed the comet in November 1680; they were of the circle of Queen Kristina of Sweden, and he may have met the queen herself, for she had observed an earlier comet with Cassini and had offered a prize for a calculation of the orbit of the comet of 1680. Halley discussed many astronomical subjects in the course of his tour; it is likely that comets were a principal topic, for their orbits were of great contemporary interest. Shortly after his return to England early in 1682, Halley met Newton, probably for the first time, and gave him an account of observations of the comet. Newton later discussed its orbit in considerable detail in book 3 of the Principia" (ODNB). Halley's breakthrough was noting the similarities between the comet he witnessed and those that had appeared in 1531 and 1607, and predicting its return in 1758/59. The comet's much-anticipated reappearance was a popular sensation, and brooches such as this one were fashionable accessories in the years following. The British Museum holds a similar brooch (1978,1002.718). Gere et al 1984 114. Britain, late 18th century. Gold and foil-backed almandine garnet brooch in the form of Halley's Comet. 2 x 1 cm. Amsterdam: heirs of C[ornelius] Stichter [II], 1759. 4to (193 x 150 mm). [32] pp. Printed in red and black. Large woodcut printer's device on title, 12 half-page woodcuts. Interleaved with double leaves. Contemporary Middleburg binding of gold-tooled calf, from the Rosette Roll Bindery, covers with outer ornamental bird roll and inner scallop roll, at center the crowned arms of the province of Zeeland, surrounded by an exuberant array of repeated rose, carnation and shell tools, smooth spine in 8 compartments with repeated flowering plant tool, gilt edges, remains of one (of two) green silk fore-edge ties, marbled endpapers; a few small scrapes to front cover, joints and extremities rubbed. Provenance: unidentified inkstamped initial M.*** An attractive interleaved Dutch almanac, illustrated with 12 large emblematic woodcuts of monthly activities, several showing Amsterdam, delightfully bound in Zeeland. The Amsterdam comptoir or "office almanacs" were issued yearly by successive members of the Stichter printing family from 1728 (date of the privilege, printed in every edition) to the mid-19th century. Unlike their French counterparts, these Dutch almanacs were generously proportioned, being intended literally for the "counters" of merchants and businessmen, rather than for gentlemen's or ladies' pockets. The contents were invariably as follows, and the calendars were always interleaved: one page is devoted to each month, containing a half-page woodcut above a blank space for notes on the recto, and the monthly calendar on the verso. WAGNER, Johann Ludwig.
Robel, "German travel reports on Russia and their changing function in the eighteenth century" in: Grau, Karp and Voss eds. Deutsch-russische Beziehungen im 18. Jahrhundert, p. 286; Quérard X, p. 466. First and only edition in French of the memoirs of a German postmaster, who spent the Seven Years' War as a prisoner in Siberia. After the capture of Prussian Pillau (modern Baltiysk) by Russia in 1759, Wagner (1735-1820) had unknowingly been sending Russian troop movements to the Prussians but was betrayed, arrested and subsequently deported to Siberia. Wagner was first sent to Tobolsk and then to Mangazeya, where he arrived more than a year after his arrest and would spend another three years. In the memoirs he "describes the hardships of living there without any self-pity. His observations and experiences during the transportation and finally in the Far North of Siberia are given to the reader in graphic details" (Robel). Wagner was released in 1763 and returned home after a journey lasting a year and a half, but denied any financial support by the Prussian king. The memoirs are followed by a description of the Russian Empire, drawing on earlier accounts but also containing original remarks. In writing his account, published in German in 1789, Wagner probably collaborated with Johann Heinrich Würzer, one of Prussia's fiercest Jacobins. Both the memoir and the description of Russia deliver accusations against rulers who are not interested in the wellbeing of their subjects and of the rights of people living under occupation. In very good condition. ROUELLE (Guillaume-François) ].
(Paris, c. 1759). [Geneva: Cramer,] 1759-63. First edition
I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. Voltaire was an important French author whose works of history became popular throughout Europe. He wrote biographical sketches on Charles XII of Sweden, as well as a historical view of Peter the Great of Russia. After publishing his history of Charles XII, 'History of the Russian Empire' was written as Voltaire became historiographer of Peter I. This book begins with a description of Russia and continues with the story of Peter the Great. While the title page of the first volume states 1759, the work was not released for sale until the following year as Voltaire had to wait for approval from the St. Petersburg authorities. The second volume is often more desirable than the first in that it discusses Peter the Great's religious and political views, Russian trade with China, and Peter's travels in Persia. The second volume is often more desirable than the first in that it discusses Peter the Great’s religious and political views, Russian trade with China, and Peter’s travels in Persia. HELVÉTIUS, Claude-Adrien.
London: Printed for the translator, and sold by Mr. Dodsley and Co., Mess. Millar, Nourse, and Tonson, Mess. Hitch and Hawes, Mr. Fletcher, Mr. Merril, and J. Coote, 1759. Quarto (255 x 197 mm). Contemporary calf, later red morocco label. Contemporary price notation to front endpaper. Some light marks to calf, trivial wear around extremities, a few minor interior blemishes and light creases to contents, stain to p. 129. A very good copy. First edition in English of the controversial French Enlightenment philosopher's most radical work, "On the Mind", with annotations transcribed from those made by Jean-Jacques Rousseau in his own personal copy. In opposition to Montesquieu's theory as set forth in Spirit of the Laws, Helvétius (1715-71) attacks all forms of morality based on religion, arguing instead that human beings are ruled by sensation, "motivated in their actions only by the natural desire to maximize their own pleasure and minimize their pain" (Bristow). De l'Esprit was immediately condemned as heretical by the Paris Parlement, the Sorbonne, the Pope, and King Louis XV's son, the dauphin Louis. Copies of it were ordered publicly burned by the Paris hangman, and it negatively affected Helvétius's contemporary philosophes: publication of Diderot's Encyclopédie was suspended and works by others, including Voltaire, were also burned. This copy is from the Lindsayan Library (with the Bibliotheca Lindesiana bookplate and associated shelfmark to pastedown), the vast library accumulated by the 25th and 26th Earls of Crawford, one of the most impressive private collections of … [Click Below for Full Description]

BIRCH, Thomas (ed.)]
London: A. Millar, 1759. Quarto (255 x 205 mm). Recent quarter calf preserving contemporary marbled paper boards, red morocco label to spine. Baltimore library plate and their shelfmarks to pastedown, over earlier bookplate which has offset onto front free endpaper; pencilled additions to last few leaves. Rebacked and recornered preserving older endpapers, loosening and a little torn, slight dampstain at foot of second half. A very good copy. With 7 printed folding tables. First collected edition. Li Bai; Wang Qi
[China]: Bao hu lou, 1759. Sixteen woodblock-printed volumes, all on double leaves, bound in traditional Chinese style with thread, in a later blue folding cloth case. The leaves have all been carefully re-backed, apparently during the Republican era, so that wormholes and other minor areas of loss have been made sturdy; new exterior wrappers were also added to each volume. The blue case bulges somewhat with the thickness of the volumes contained within. While one of the prefaces is dated to the 23rd year of Qianlong, 1758, a date cited for some listings in OCLC, two other prefaces and the last page of the work are dated to the jimao year of Qianlong, or 1759. This set of blocks may have been used for a number of years to print new copies as called for, without any indication of the actual date of printing. The interior title page, which gives the title "Li Qinglian quan ji ji zhu," states that it was printed from the woodblocks stored at Bao hu lou. An important edition of the works of Li Bai, the Tang dynasty poet, also known in English as Li Po.

Sandby, 1759. viii, 264 pp. Octavo (8-1/2" x 5-1/2"). Later library cloth, red and black lettering pieces to spine. Light soiling, some chipping to lettering pieces, "T. Mitchell, 1807" to bottom edges of text block. Moderate toning to text, faint dampspotting in places, faint library stamp and early struck-through signature to center of title page, repair to its top-edge, early owner annotation ("Thos. Mitchell's Book, 1807") to head of following page. $1,000. * First edition. This is an annotated translation of the first book of Bynkershoek's Quaestionum Juris Publici (1737). Bynkershoek considers questions dealing with international law and the customs of war. "De Rebus Bellicus," its most important chapter, addresses the customs of war on land and sea. Notably humane, it condemns actions against civilians and advocates the fair treatment of prisoners of war. Beginning with Lord Mansfield, scholars have considered this to be his greatest work. 4to. 1 page on bifolium with integral address panel. To a Mr. Gerstöcker, "Maitre de langue" in Meissen, thanking him for some poems he had sent him and congratulating him on the way he bears his fate. - Reynolds' edition of Gellert's letters does not record any letters from, to or about any "Gerstöcker" or "Gerstäcker". The recipient may possibly be identified with Johann August Gerstäcker, later a civil servant at Pegau who became an official at Zwickau in 1772 and that same year penned a Gellert quotation in the friendship album of his colleague Thomas von Wagner (GNM Hs. 113064c). - Upper right corner has recipient's note: "Accep. d. YAMAWAKI, Toyo
Four finely handcolored full-page woodcuts in the text. 40 folding leaves; 44 folding leaves. Two vols. 8vo, orig. wrappers (minor rubbing), orig. block printed title labels on upper covers, new stitching. Kyoto: Yojuin, 1759. First edition of the first book to describe the first officially sanctioned dissection in Japan. Until the 18th century, Japanese medicine closely followed Chinese practices which did not regard anatomy as relevant to pathology or therapy. Additionally, there were strong social pressures against the use of dissections for medical research. Yamawaki (1705-62), a member of one of the greatest medical families of Japan, studied traditional medicine under both Goto Gonzan and Kagawa Shuan but was far more interested in what could be achieved on an empirical basis. He developed a healthy skepticism toward the theories of the internal organs as used in Chinese medicine and wanted to know more about the structure of the human body and the functions of its organs. "Toyo's opportunity came in 1754 when five thieves were executed in Kyoto, and three medical men from Obama fief asked for and received, for the first time, official permission to dissect one corpse. This permission was granted by the lord of Obama fief. Toyo was invited to join this group for the observation. Their interest focused mainly on the internal organs? "Toyo recorded his observations in 1759 in his Zoshi (on the viscera) which consisted of six pages of explanation and four pages of sketches drawn by his pupil Asanuma Sukemitsu. The sketches were reproduced by wood-block printing? The conte … [Click Below for Full Description]

Giuseppe VASI (Corleone, 27 Agosto 1710 - Roma, 16 Aprile 1782)
Acquaforte e bulino, 1759. [Click Below for Full Description]

Wargentin, Peter (Pehr) ? John Harrison:
Hamburg und Leipzig, Grunds Witwe und Holle 1759. 8vo. Titel, 2 Bl. 300 S., 5 Bl., 7 gefalt. Tafeln. Bd.19 vorgebunden. [Click Below for Full Description]

CONTARINI, Pietro Antonio - Jesuit Priest
Lisbon, 5 June 1759. Fair copy manuscript letter, transcribed in 1760 by a scribe of the Portuguese royal court, with the original letter in hand, being correspondence from a Jesuit called Pietro Antonio Contarini, addressed to Pope Clement XIII, which was intended to apprise the Pope of the excellent works of the Jesuits in America in terms of global commerce and trade, with special interest being taken in California gold and pearls, to report on anti-Jesuit propaganda and scandals, and ultimately to augment the Pope's support in a time of persecution. According to the transcriber's final annotation, however, the letter was intercepted by the court of King Joseph I of Portugal, who only three months later officially expelled the Society from his kingdom and colonies. The final page consists of a poem honoring Saint Francis Xavier, co-founder of the Society of Jesus. All text is in Italian. Folio. 6 pages written on two double leafs laid watermarked paper measuring approximately 22 x 34 cm. Some creasing and minor chips to edges, otherwise in very good condition, clean and bright, a superlative primary source document, paramount to any Jesuit Americana library. The timing and the content of the letter, together with surrounding political circumstances, are most significant. In September 1759, only 3 months after this letter was written, a letter in which a Jesuit noble who revealed economic activity in California and persecution in Lima, King Joseph I of Portugal and his minister the 1st Marquis of Pombal expelled the Jesuits from the Kingdom of Portugal and its colonies.
