Münchner Maler, Mitte 19. Jahrhundert
Jahrhunderts hin.

Venegas, Miguel
Printed for James Rivington and James Fletcher, London, 1759. Good sound set rebacked nicely; all text in English. The Spanish-language Venegas issue is Zamorano 78. Unpaginated preliminaries, 455, 387, folded map and 8 plates recto (all copperplate) on four leaves; textblock is sound and readily handled, and clean, with an occasional foxing trace and small smudges. The map is a crisp bright strike with a couple short closed marginal tears, while the plates, named below, are tepid and a trifle dim. The two volumes are well-matched and recased in all four of the original 8x5 inch polished calf boards, skived gracefully into the much newer calf spines on which the original (somewhat damaged) red leather labels have been laid down. All edges retain the first-issue red tint, though top edges have turned very dark. Hinges are perfectly functional if a little unsightly (endsheets somewhat messy but requiring preservation), One could have wished for filled-in hinge gutters and a better match-up of new and old hides, but the craftsmanship here is plainly very high. Both books bear the steel-engraved armorial bookplate of Sir Joseph Copley Baronet., and ingenious additional ownership notices on circular leather coin-sized "bookplates," a red and a black one, these aligned well with the much larger Copley's. Engraved images as follows: Women of Calif, Men of Calif, Cayote / Fox, Taye / Deer, Curing the Sick, Sorcerers, Martyrdom of Carranco, and of Tamaral. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

BERTHOUD, Ferdinand (1727-1807).
Paris,: chez l'auteur & Michel Lambert, 1759., 1759. 16mo, 4 folding engraved plates. Contemporary calf, spine gilt; upper joint split, a little worn. Bookplate of Leon Leroy. Very good. All editions very scarce. First edition of the author's first work. How to manage and regulate clocks and watches: for those who have no knowledge of horology. The work is a technical manual for watchmakers and clock-makers trained as tradesmen, rather than philosophers or mathematicians. The beautiful engraved plates depict clock works, watch works, pendulums, and sun-dials. Berthoud's popular work went through six editions through 1836. / Berthoud, scientist, inventor and horologist, was born in Neuchatel, Switzerland, near the center of the famous Swiss watch and clock making industry. He became watchmaker to the King of France, having been named a Master of the craft in Paris, 1753. His father was a burgher of Neuchatel and Couvet, and his wife was also born in Couvet. PROVENANCE: Leon Leroy. The rubber-stamp from Couvet places this volume in the commune of Berthoud's parents. Louis Leroy, brother of Leon, had a clockmaking business in Paris. That business was started by Bazile-Charles Le Roy (1765-1839), followed by Charles-Louis, his son, who took over in 1828 and died in 1865. In 1845 Halley-Desfontaines bought a share of the business, and he engaged Louis Leroy in the business (ca. 1860- … [Click Below for Full Description]

MILTON, John
Birmingham: John Baskerville for J. and R. Tonson, 1759. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. "The mind is its own place, and in itself can make a heaven of hell, a hell of heaven." ― John Milton, Paradise Lost An excellent printing of John Milton's most famous work, 'Paradise Lost' and the sequel, 'Paradise Regain'd,' to which is added 'Simon Agonistes' and 'Poems on Several Occasions.' 'Paradise Lost' follows the biblical story of the Fall of Man and the temptation of Adam and Eve. Milton himself states that purpose for this book was to "Justify the ways of God to Men". It covers the characters Adam, Eve, and Satan and the roles each played in the development of religious culture and idolatry. It was critically acclaimed and well-received by many famed personalities, including Samuel Johnson who states. "[Paradise Lost shows] Milton's peculiar power to astonish...and he seems to have been well acquainted with his own genius, and to know what it was the Nature had bestowed upon him more bountifully than upon others: the power of displaying the vast, illuminating the splendid, enforcing the awful, darkening the gloomy, and aggravating the dreadful. Christian writer C.S. Lewis also interpreted Milton's landmark poem as a 'genuine Christian morality tale' (Leonard).

Marchand, Prosper
[The Hague] a la Haye: Pierre de Hondt, 1758-1759. Hardcover. This remarkable "Historical Dictionary," offers critical and literary memoirs about the life and works of various distinguished persons, particularly in the republic of letters, This book was done as a complementary work to the famous early 18th century dictionary of Pierre Bayle. Prosper Marchand (1678-1756) was a Huguenot refugee who became a bookseller, bibliographer, and publisher in the Netherlands. Marchand died before the manuscript was complete, but he had commissioned his friend and executor, Jean Nicolas Sebastien Allamand, to review and publish it. Allamand spent four years putting Marchand's notes in order. They were mostly written on confused and scattered scraps of paper. In his introduction, Allamand describes all the pains he had to take to restore these notes and to supplement the omissions of Marchand. The result is this monumental bound folio with two painstakingly printed volumes on on seemingly everyone and everything literary. Printed in double columns with numerous shoulder footnotes on most pages. At the end of Volume II are an alphabetical list of articles, a table of subjects, and a catalog of books published by Pierre de Hondt. Bound in three quarter brown leather with decorated brown paper boards. Six raised bands to spine with brown leather title label in second compartment. Chipping and small tears to leather as well as to paper covers. Interior pages show light aging but are otherwise clean and bright. Offsetting on free endpapers from leather borders on pastedowns.

Battam, referenced as 'the late' to the title page of this edition, was styled as 'Mistress of Myon's Coffee-House, in Great Russel-street, Bloomsbury' in the first edition. Unashamedly advertised as a collection of receipts incorporating the work of others, as was the convention with manuscript receipt books, the introductory advertisement explains that 'many of the receipts in the following work are originals, not to be met with in any former collection, and most of them written by Ladies of quality, whose principal study has been houshold oeconomy and elegance of taste'. BERTHOUD, Ferdinand (1727-1807).
chez l'auteur & Michel Lambert, 1759., Paris. 1860-1935); Lou … [Click Below for Full Description]

LEYRIS, abbé de
Avignon, 1759. ______ Format : In-12. Collation : 24 pp. Reliure : En feuilles.

Anonymous.
London: T. Kinnersley, 1759, Sheet 135 x 210mm. A map of the Province of Pennsylvania published to illustrate the conflict between the British, French and their native allies for control of the area during the Seven Years' War (known as the 'French and Indian War in America). In particular it marks Fort Duquesne, a French fort on the Ohio River. In September 1758 the British attacked the fort: an advanced force was crushed by the French, who then burned the fort and retreated before the main force arrived. The British then rebuilt it as Fort Pitt, which evolved into Pittsburgh. This map was published in 'The Grand Magazine of Magazines. or Universal Register', which was mostly written by David Henry. Published as a competitor to the 'Gentleman's Magazine', Henry appears not to have scruples about the sources of his illustrations; this map seems to have been adapted from Kitchin's map for the 'London Magazine', published in 1756, before these events. Thus this map is marked 'F.t du Quesne now called Pittsburg', a very early usage of the name. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Johan Haartman ( September 19, 1725/December 29, 1787 Turku, Finland ), the Academy of Turku was the first Finnish-born professor of medicine . After the Great Northern War in 1721, Sweden ceased to be an important military power. Instead, the kingdom concentrated on developing science. Swedish research got international fame with names as Carolus Linnaeus, Pehr Wargentin and Anders Celsius. Medical research remained limited and malaria was common especially in the coastal area and along the shores of the big lakes. Already in the beginning of the 18th century Swedish physicians recommended Peruvian bark as medication and they also emphasized that bleeding or blood-letting a malaria patient was harmful. Although malaria was a common disease in the kingdom, the situation was worst in the SW-part of Finland which consisted of the town of Turku and a large archipelago in the Baltic. The farmers had no opportunity to get modern healthcare until Johan Haartman was appointed district physician in 1754. To improve the situation he wrote a medical handbook intended for both the farmers and for persons of rank. Haar … [Click Below for Full Description]
