Battam, referenced as 'the late' to the title page of this edition, was styled as 'Mistress of Myon's Coffee-House, in Great Russel-street, Bloomsbury' in the first edition. (Fort Pitt)
R. Baldwin. Bound volume of Jan. - Dec. 1759, in early or original half brown calf and marbled boards, 730 pp, index, with 27 of 28 plates as called for by the binder's directions; lacking only the map of the 'seat of war in the empire of Germany' supposed to be at p. 8. Otherwise very good, with all plates present including folding charts, frontispiece, etc. Light rubbing to binding and lacking spine label. Significant to Pittsburghers for having the first published map of the city of Pittsburgh named as Pittsburgh in the January 1759 issue (a 4 x 4 inch woodcut vignette map); in late November, the French, who occupied Pittsburgh and had built Fort DuQuesne, came under attack from the British General John Forbes and his forces and set fire to their own fort and fled. The fort was rebuilt quickly and renamed Fort Pitt and the settlement surrounding the fort dubbed Pittsburgh, both in honor of William Pitt, the Earl of Chatham. News reached London quickly and this is the first published map and one of the earliest published accounts of the skirmish and name change. Another version of this map appeared at the same time in Scots Magazine of similar dimensions but slightly different, and these two compete for the honor of the first published map of Pittsburgh. Very Good. [Attributes: First Edition]

Voyage To Senegal, The Isle Of Goree, And The River Gambia was printed in 1759. The Hardcover book has no visible shelf wear on it. The pages are in great shape with no tears or stains. The two maps of Africa were unfortunately removed from the book by the previous owner during rebinding. The two maps are in wonderful condition with absolutely no signs of sun damage or discoloration. The extremely rare book details the exploration conducted by a group of brave travelers and explorers to explore Senegal, The Isle Of Goree, along with parts of the River Gambia. They detail their research of the area and the tribal people who inhabited those parts of Africa during the 1700s. Great book for any antique book collection! Great read! What you see is what you get. If you have any questions feel free to ask me anything about the book.

Henri IV, (Henry le Grand) unified France after the religious wars in Europe tore it asunder, and Duke Sully was his Prime Minister, pretty much entirely responsible for the execution of a re-organization of France under the King. The first parts of the memoirs outline a utopian Europe, divided into 15 separate and equal dominations, 11 monarchies and 4 republics, that shared in the governance of Europe without National rivalry. It took more than five hundred years to begin the formation of the Eurozone forseen in this book. Maximilien de Béthune, first Duke of Sully (13 December 1560 ? 22 December 1641) was the doughty soldier, French minister, staunch Huguenot (Protestant) and faithful right-hand man who assisted king Henry IV of France in the rule of France. Smith, Adam
London: For A. Milar, and A. Kincaid and J. Bell, 1759. Rare first edition of Adam Smith's first book, with a recorded "print run of 1,000 copies" (Sher, "Editions of Adam's Smith's Books," 13). Octavo, bound in full contemporary leather. In near fine condition. First editions are rare. Adam Smith's Theory of Moral Sentiments, his first book, is "one of the truly outstanding books in the intellectual history of the world" (Amartya Sen). First published in 1759, it laid the foundation for Wealth of Nations and proposed the theory repeated in the later work: that self-seeking men are often "led by an invisible hand... without knowing it, without intending it, to advance the interest of the society." "The fruit of his Glasgow years... Moral Sentiments would be enough to assure the author a respected place among Scottish moral philosophers, and Smith himself ranked it above the Wealth of Nations... Its central idea is the concept, closely related to conscience, of the impartial spectator who helps man to distinguish right from wrong. For the same purpose, Immanuel Kant invented the categorical imperative and Sigmund Freud the superego" (Niehans, 62). Basing moral sentiment on "the power one man has of putting himself in the place of another," in contrast to Hume's idea of self-interest, "Smith was henceforth recognized as one of the first authors of the day" (DNB). With Moral Sentiments and Wealth of Nations Smith created "not merely a treatise on moral philosophy and a treatise on economics, but a complete moral and political philosophy, in which the two elements of history a … [Click Below for Full Description]

Marchand, Prosper
[The Hague] a la Haye: Pierre de Hondt, 1758-1759. Hardcover. This remarkable "Historical Dictionary," offers critical and literary memoirs about the life and works of various distinguished persons, particularly in the republic of letters, This book was done as a complementary work to the famous early 18th century dictionary of Pierre Bayle. Prosper Marchand (1678-1756) was a Huguenot refugee who became a bookseller, bibliographer, and publisher in the Netherlands. Marchand died before the manuscript was complete, but he had commissioned his friend and executor, Jean Nicolas Sebastien Allamand, to review and publish it. Allamand spent four years putting Marchand's notes in order. They were mostly written on confused and scattered scraps of paper. In his introduction, Allamand describes all the pains he had to take to restore these notes and to supplement the omissions of Marchand. The result is this monumental bound folio with two painstakingly printed volumes on on seemingly everyone and everything literary. Printed in double columns with numerous shoulder footnotes on most pages. At the end of Volume II are an alphabetical list of articles, a table of subjects, and a catalog of books published by Pierre de Hondt. Bound in three quarter brown leather with decorated brown paper boards. Six raised bands to spine with brown leather title label in second compartment. Chipping and small tears to leather as well as to paper covers. Interior pages show light aging but are otherwise clean and bright. Offsetting on free endpapers from leather borders on pastedowns. [Blondel, Jean]
Hamburg: [s.n.], 1759. 8vo. 177 x 121 mm. (7 x 4 3/4 inches). 103 pp. Woodcut vignette on title-page. Printing flaw on page 26 with first few words at the beginning of each line are faintly printed. Text lightly soiled. Original paste-paper wrappers, orange paper back strip with paper label pasted over spine; edges of spine rubbed, occasional worming to gutter. Rare Italian edition of Jean Blondel's essay on mankind, which is dedicated to all classes of society. Blondel published this work with the idea of lifting the spirit of men and women and suggesting they focus on feelings and sentiments which have been lost in the rush of progress. Entitled "Mankind, such as they Are and as they Should Be" is one of a number of essays published by Blondel in the 1750's. He was an important jurist by training and member of the administrative court of Louis XVI. In the early years of the Enlightenment, Blondel was involved in both criminal reform and economics. He witnessed classes of men and women from an analytical point of view and recognized that understanding the condition of man required more than statistics. Orazio Arrighi Landini translated the work right after it was published. Arrighi was a noted Italian actor, orator, and author who was well known throughout Italy and the Austrian Empire. One copy of this edition is listed in ICCU; no copies are listed in NUC or OCLC. A second edition was published in Venice in 1770. Not in Brunet. (102).

JOHNSON (Samuel)
London: Printed for R. and J. Dodsley.and W. Johnston, 1759. FIRST EDITION. 2 volumes. Small 8vo, 150 x 94 mms., pp. [iii] iv - viii, 159 - 160 blank; [iii] iv - viii, 165 [166 blank], contemporary calf, neatly rebacked, retaining original spines with volume numbers in gilt on the spines; no front free end-papers or initial blanks in either volume, slight water-staining of last three leaves in volume 2, occasional staining or foxing of text, but a good copy, with the presentation inscription inscription on the front paste-down end-paper, "The gift of Mrs. Pearch/ to/ Dorothy Robertson," and the autograph "Miss Burrell" on the top margin of the title-page in each volume. Mrs. Pearch is conceivably the wife of the publisher George Pearch. Edmund Burke reviewed the novel in The Annual Register, beginning with the assertion that, "in this novel the moral is the principle, and the story is a mere vehicle to convey the instruction. Accordingly the tale is not near so full of incidents, or so diverting in itself, if the ingenious author, if he had not had higher views, might easily have made it; neither is the distinction of character sufficiently attended to: but with these defects, perhaps no book ever inculcated a purer and sounder morality; no book ever made a more just estimate of human life, its pursuits, and its enjoyments." Like many people, Burke was aware of the identity of the author and observed at the end of the review, "there is no doubt he is the same who has done so much for the improvement of our taste and our morals, and employed a great part of his life in an as … [Click Below for Full Description]

(Fort Pitt)
London: R. Very Good.
