Lapie Pierre M. (1759 - 1870)
Artist: Lapie Pierre M ( - 1870); date: ca 1828, 1759. - technic: Copper print; colorit: colored; - condition: Centerfoldv restored; - size (in cm): 46 x 61; - description: Map shows the miky-way of our galaxy in two hemispheres. In Meteorologica Aristotle, wrote that the Greek philosophers Anaxagoras and Democritus proposed that the Milky Way might consist of distant stars. However, Aristotle himself believed the Milky Way to be caused by the ignition of the fiery exhalation of some stars which were large, numerous and close together and that the ignition takes pace in the upper part of the atmosphere, in the region of the world which is continuous with the heavenly motions. The Neoplatonist philosopher Olympiodorus the Younger criticized this view, arguing that if the Milky Way were sublunary, it should appear different at different times and places on Earth, and that it should have parallax, which it does not. In his view, the Milky Way was celestial. This idea would be influential later in the Islamic world.Actual proof of the Milky Way consisting of many stars came in 1610 when Galileo Galilei used a telescope to study the Milky Way and discovered that it was composed of a huge number of faint stars. In a treatise in 1755, Immanuel Kant, drawing on earlier work by Thomas Wright, speculated (correctly) that the Milky Way might be a rotating body of a huge number of stars, held together by gravitational forces akin to the Solar System but on much larger scales. The resulting disk of stars would be seen as a band on the sky from our perspective inside the disk. CONTARINI, Pietro Antonio - Jesuit Priest
Portugal: (1759). Lisbon, 5 June 1759. Fair copy manuscript letter, transcribed in 1760 by a scribe of the Portuguese royal court, with the original letter in hand, being correspondence from a Jesuit called Pietro Antonio Contarini, addressed to Pope Clement XIII, which was intended to apprise the Pope of the excellent works of the Jesuits in America in terms of global commerce and trade, with special interest being taken in California gold and pearls, to report on anti-Jesuit propaganda and scandals, and ultimately to augment the Pope's support in a time of persecution. According to the transcriber's final annotation, however, the letter was intercepted by the court of King Joseph I of Portugal, who only three months later officially expelled the Society from his kingdom and colonies. The final page consists of a poem honoring Saint Francis Xavier, co-founder of the Society of Jesus. All text is in Italian. Folio. 6 pages written on two double leafs laid watermarked paper measuring approximately 22 x 34 cm. Some creasing and minor chips to edges, otherwise in very good condition, clean and bright, a superlative primary source document, paramount to any Jesuit Americana library. The timing and the content of the letter, together with surrounding political circumstances, are most significant. In September 1759, only 3 months after this letter was written, a letter in which a Jesuit noble who revealed economic activity in California and persecution in Lima, King Joseph I of Portugal and his minister the 1st Marquis of Pombal expelled the Jesuits from the Kingdom of Portugal … [Click Below for Full Description]

HIRT (A.).
2 ouvrages reliés en 1 volume in-4 carré. 1). XVIII. 102 pages. + VI. 1 feuillet. pages 103-226. + 31 planches gravées et chiffrées. 2). 36 pages. 12 pages. I … [Click Below for Full Description]

Forces from the People of Dover Rural District on first free endpaper. Marguerite de Launay (1684-1750) was educated at a convent in Evreux and entered the household of the Duchesse du Maine. After being implicated in a conspiracy against Philippe, Duke of Orleans, Regent for Louis XV, she was committed to the Bastille for two years in 1718. Here she discovered a love for a fellow prisoner and conversely her gaoler developed a passion for her, both of them being aristocrats. In 1750 she entered upon a marriage with the Baron de Staal, arranged by the Duchesse to enhance her status. Her Memoirs, notable for their humour and frankness were first published in French in 1755 and have remained popular ever since. This second edition is very scarce; ESTC records only one UK copy, in Oxford, two in the US and two in Australia, the first edition also having one UK location, in the British Library. London: T.Kinnersley, 1759, Sheet 205 x 105mm. The Battle of of Zornsdorf (now Sarbinowo, Poland) was fought between the Prussians and Russians during the Seven Years' War, as Frederick II of Prussia came up behing the Russian army, which was besieging Küstrin. Because of unsuitable terrain flanking manoeuvres were impossible, so the battle became a bloody head-to-head clash. The Prussians lost a third of their 36,000 men and the Russians 18,000 of their 43,500. Because the Russians refused to retreat Frederick famously declared that 'it's easier to kill the Russians than to win over them'. This map was published in the February edition of 'The Grand Magazine of Magazines. or Universal Register'. Mostly written by David Henry, the magazine was published as a competitor to the 'Gentleman's Magazine'. The circulation was never high and it folded in 1760. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

VOLTAIRE, [François Marie Arouet de] (1694-1778)
Geneva: Gabriel Cramer, 1759. 12mo (161x95 mm). 299, [3 blank] pp. Woodcut ornament to title and tail-pieces, with penultimate leaf N7 (blank) present but final leaf N8 (instructions to the binder) a stub only. Contemporary Italian mottled sheep-backed boards, gilt spine with red morocco label (upper corners worn). Some light foxing and browning, mostly to upper margin, a very good, genuine copy.RARE FIRST EDITION. A nice copy of the true first edition, with the following issue points: the title ornament of spray, fruit and flowers is repeated at pp. 193 and 266; p. 103, line 4, has the misprint 'que ce ce fut' (corrected to 'que ce fut' in later editions); p. 125, line 4, has 'précisément' (corrected to 'précipitamment' in later editions); with Voltaire's revisions on p. 31 eliminating an unnecessary paragraph break, and on p. 41 the rewritten several short sentences on the Lisbon earthquake. This first edition does not preserve the cancelled paragraph on p. 242 critical of German poets (beginning "Candide était affligé").The bibliographical history of this book has been exasperatingly complex and confused, not least because before handing over a final manuscript to Cramer, Voltaire went behind his back and sent a slightly different version of the manuscript to John Nourse, a printer in London, who may well have dispatched copies to other publishers. The result was that within weeks of the first edition of Candide appearing in Geneva, sixteen other editions appeared in Paris, London and Amsterdam. The identification of the present issue as the true editio princeps, al … [Click Below for Full Description]

CONTARINI, Pietro Antonio - Jesuit Priest
In September 1759, only 3 months after this letter was written, a letter in which a Jesuit noble who revealed economic activity in California and persecution in Lima, King Joseph I of Portugal and his minister the 1st Marquis of Pombal expelled the Jesuits from the Kingdom of Portugal and its colonies. Eliot, Andrew:
Printed by Daniel and John Kneeland, for J. Winter,, Boston: 1759 - 43, [1 blank] pp, lacking the half title and disbound. Else a clean text and Very Good. Eliot traces the aggressions of "the papal yoke" from at least 1588, with the defeat of the Spanish Armada. "This open attempt being unsuccessful, our popish adversaries have ever since been forming plots and conspiracies to overthrow our religion and liberties." Eliot celebrates England's thwarting of their most recent effort, the defeat of Montcalm on the Plain of Abraham outside Quebec City. The French, says Eliot, have been a real nuisance-- "troublesome neighbors." Although "their numbers have been comparatively small, agreeable to the grasping temper that nation has ever discovered, they have been gradually drawing nearer to us, as if they hoped in process of time to drive us into the sea. They have been, for a long course of years, the cause of the wars we have had with the natives, they have supplied the Indians with arms and ammunition, they have filled them with prejudices against the English." He deplores "the most pernicious effects" of French domination of Nova Scotia upon the New England colonies; and lists the French aggressions against England in the New World from 1627 until the present.
