Typis Martinianis, 1759. Cm. 28, pp. (2) viii, 80. Legatura in cart. rigido. coevo. Cfr. Lazzari (Storia della micologia) e Pritzel, 490.

8 p.l., 586, [38] pp. 4to, cont. calf (upper joint cracked at head, minor foxing at beginning & end), red morocco lettering piece on spine. London: W. Johnston, Keith, & E. Dilly, 1759. First edition in English, with considerable additions based on his own experiments by the translator William Lewis, author of the Commercium Philosophico-Technicum (London: 1763-65). Neumann (1683-1737), contributed significantly to the establishment of Stahlian chemistry in Germany and its dissemination throughout Europe. "He distinguished clearly between pure and applied chemistry and insisted that the chemical approach to nature was vastly superior to the mechanical philosophy."-D.S.B., X, p. 26. "The text is divided into three approximately equal parts covering the mineral, vegetable and animal kingdoms. One of the best textbooks of the period, it contains (according to Cole) 'the first exposition of Stahl's phlogiston theory in English.' JOHNSON, Dr. Samuel [writing anonymously]
London: R. & J. Dodsley, W. Johnston(1759). This is the second edition of the work now universally known as "Rasselas", and it is almost in every respect identical with the extremely rare first edition issued a few weeks before it, on April 19, 1759. It is a philosophical novella which describes the life of Prince Rasselas and Nekayah, his sister, who are kept in a place called the Happy Valley in the land of Abyssinia. The Valley is a place free of problems, where any desire is quickly satisfied. The constant pleasure, however, does not lead to satisfaction; and, with the help of a philosopher named Imlac, Rasselas escapes and explores the world to witnes how all aspects of society and life in the outside world are filled with suffering. They return to Abyssinia, but do not wish to return to the state of constantly fulfilled pleasures found in the Happy Valley. "Rasselas" was written during the evenings of one week, in order for Johnson to raise enough money to bury his mother, and to pay some of her debts. It was published anonymously, and Boswell says of it that it contains "all the force and beauty of which the English language is capable". Our little set contains the Chippendale bookplate of John Buller, of Morval, and the signature of Anne Lennon, his wife (c. 1770), the predecessors of Sir Redvers Buller. Both volumes have been freshly restored and re-bound in full book calf with five raised bands to each spine. Vol. II contains final blank leaf (M4). The contents are clean throughout with only the very occasional spot of foxing. Overall, a magnificent set. ESTC T57 … [Click Below for Full Description]

(JOHNSON, Samuel)
London: Printed for R. and J. Dodsley and W. Johnston, 1759. First edition, first state of Vol. II, with leaf A2 headed "CONTENTS / VOL. II". Fleeman, I, 785-8; Courtney & Nichol Smith, p. 87; Chapman & Hazen, pp. 142-3; Rothschild 1242. "Hawkins and Boswell agree that Rasselas (as The Prince of Abissinia was subsequently called) was written to help the dying Sarah Johnson (Dr. Johnson's mother) and eventually pay for her funeral ... Johnson told Reynolds he wrote the work in the evenings of a single week, which implies a commencement at least on Monday 15 January, the date on which he learned of his mother's illness and on which he first sent her money." - Fleeman. Rasselas is the story of a journey of discovery to find the source of true happiness. With the help of the philosopher Imlac, the prince, his sister and companions escape from their perfectly anodyne home in Happy Valley - a place where "every pleasure is anticipated and satisfied and every external cause of anxiety or grief is removed" - where they have all become listless and bored and unhappy. In the course of their journey, they inquire into every condition of life, finally realizing that happiness, like a mirage, cannot be attained if we search for it. We can only find it by chance, or indirectly, as a result of another activity; or rather, it finds us, when and where we least expect it. Rasselas was an immediate and perennial success: "it has been estimated that an English or American edition has appeared almost every year since it was first published.... The main reason Rasselas quickly became - and remai … [Click Below for Full Description]

(DESCEMET, Pierre)
(Paris:) 1759. Second and enlarged edition of this complete catalogue of the plants growing in the Jardin Des Apothicaires in Paris. First published in 1741. In addition to being a major source of medicinal plants in the city, this important Parisian physic garden, whose origins dated to the late 16th century, was used extensively by medical students and botanists for the study of plants and herbs. The printed catalogue was compiled specifically as a guide for those students and was sold at the gardens for their use. The listings provide Latin and common (French) names classified according to the system of Tournefort then in use by the apothecaries . The entries include Latin and common names together with, in most cases, citations of listings in earlier botanical works and brief notations regarding the primary medicinal properties of the listed plant. Jean Descemet, the famous Parisian physician, is often incorrectly cited as the author of this work. The correct attribution is to Pierre Descemet, who ran the gardens for many years before his death in( 1762 or 1763). His son, Jacques-Louis, succeeded him. (For a lengthy account of the gardens see: Constans, Martine, ed., JARDINER A PARIS AU TEMPS DES ROIS pp. 209-216). Pritzel 2168 incorrectly ascribing this to Jean; Cleveland 395 for the first edition of 1741. 8vo (18.3 x 11.7 cm); xxii + (ii) + 136 pp. with printer's ornaments. Bound in full contemporary leather with decoratively gilt panels and gilt lettering piece on spine; corners and extremities scuffed, slight worming (half centimeter) to edge of upper cover; conte … [Click Below for Full Description]

Cioranescu, 61975; Barbier I, 424; Caillet, 10699; Frère II, 565; Versins, 887B.

[Click Below for Full Description]

QUESNAY, Francois.) BELLIAL DES VERTUS, le Sieur de, attributed author, [but see below.]
Paris: chez Jean-Thomas Hérissant, 1759. 2 works in 1 volume (see below), octavo (200 x 122 mm). Contemporary mottled calf, red morocco label to spine, compartments and raised bands elaborately decorated in gilt, marbled endpapers, edges red. Bookplate and Bibliotheque d'Hauteville library ticket to front pastedown. With the contents page repositioned after the avertissement. Spine ends and corners bumped, extremities lightly rubbed, endpapers a little marked and browned with contents lightly foxed, a very good copy. Engraved head- and tailpieces. First edition of a work which has been attributed to Quesnay since it expresses many Physiocratic beliefs, in particular those relating to agriculture and its importance to the country's economy. Scholarship, both past and present, remains divided on its authorship. Higgs refused to acknowledge the work to be Quesnay's (he lists it as by le Sieur de Bellial des Vertus), and an article by Pierre le Masne and Gabriel Sabbagh argues that the work was actually authored by Quesnay's disciple and collaborator, Charles Richard de Butré, and that Quesnay was himself influenced by the Essai prior to its publication. However, a number of other bibliographical works (Barbier, INED, OCLC) have continued to cite Quesnay as the author, an opinion convincingly supported in recent years by the New School. Essai sur l'administration des terres is bound together with a first edition of L'art de cultiver les peupliers d'Italie by Pelée de Saint-Maurice, published in Paris in 1762. This short treatise provides readers with advice on cultivating the p … [Click Below for Full Description]
