DUHAMEL DU MONCEAU, [Henri Louis].
A Paris: Chez H.L. Guerin & L.F. Delatour, 1759. FIRST EDITION. Duhamel du Monceau was inspector general of the French navy. In this book he deals with the diseases of a ship's crew and the means of preventing them, hygienic conditions on board a ship, and nutritional advice. These include methods of renewing the air below decks, the preparation of an extract of lemons, and the preservation of fresh vegetables. Reference is made to Lind, Sutton, and Hales, whose books had been recently published. At the end is a description of the Hospital St. Louis in Paris, illustrated in plan and elevation on two of the plates. The recipient of this copy was probably George Phillip Ehret, M.D. (1741-1786), a surgeon of Watford, Hertfordshire, and son of the great botanical artist Georg Ehret.12mo, pp. xvi, 252, 5 folding engraved plates. Contemporary red morocco, spine gilt in compartments with ruled latticework and green morocco label, sides with floriated borders, gilt edges, blue endpapers (joints expertly repaired, spine a little dull). Presentation copy, inscribed at the foot of the title "Presented to G.P. Ehret from the Author" followed by a signature which has been almost entirely cropped, and in another hand "Paris, March 6. 1765."

Hogg, The African slave trade and its suppression 2488b; Ragatz, British Caribbean history, p. 569. However, France did not consent to Wilberforce's proposals and officially abolished in 1848. Included at the end is an appendix with extracts from various others, supporting the statements made by Wilberforce in the letter. Some damp stains throughout. IDES, Evert Ysbrandts.
Cordier, Sinica, col. 2468; ESTC T55175; Lach & Van Kley III, pp. 1759-1767. First and only edition in English of a travel account by the ambassador of the Czar of Muscovy to the court of the Emperor of China. Ambassador Ides (1657-1708) was a native of Holstein-Glückstadt and set up as a merchant in Moscow in 1687. In 1692 Ides was selected to lead a Russian embassy and trade mission to China. His account of this journey, first published in Dutch in 1704, is one of the "most detailed and accurate descriptions of inner Asia up to that time" (Lach & Van Kley). He gives rich descriptions of the landscape and inhabitants of Siberia and especially important is his information on Manchuria and Inner Mongolia, where the expanding Russian and Chinese empires bordered. As one of the first Europeans, Ides described the Gobi Desert.Combined with Ides's account of his travels is a description of the topography of China and of its inhabitants, supposedly written by a Catholic Chinese named Dionysius Kao. Ides had received a manuscript with this text from Kao and had later sent it to his Dutch friend Nicolaes Witsen (1641-1717), possibly together with a manuscript of his own account. According to a note by the original Dutch translator, Kao's text was written in "barbarous and unintelligible Latin, and somewhat better German" (p. 209). Most plates with repaired tears and waterstains, pages browned with some darker stains. Original binding heavily damaged but professionally restored. A fair copy of an important travel account.

Plautus. (Titus Maccius Plautus) [Ca: 254?184 B.C.]
J. Barbou, Paris: 1759. Three volumes. 12mo. [157 x 89 mm.] Engraved frontis, illustrations, and vignettes by Eisen, engraved by Lempereur and Aliamet. Tasteful contemporary full red straight grained morocco leather binding in the Syston Park style. Marbled endpapers. All edges gold. A clean and crisp copy of an eminent Barbou classic, probably from Sir John Hayford Thorold's Syston Park library. Plautus was a famed Roman writer of comedies, His plays, adapted from those of Greek New Comedy, are popular and vigorous representations of middle-class and lower-class life. Written with a mastery of idiomatic spoken Latin and governed by a genius for situation and coarse humor, Plautus' comedies achieved a great reputation. Characteristic of his plays are the stock comic figures: the knavish, resourceful slave, the young lover and his mistre ss, the courtesan, the parasite, and the braggart soldier. His plots and characters have had great influence upon later literature, with adaptations and imitations by many writers, e.g., Molière, Corneille, Jonson, and Shakespeare. Twenty-one plays survive, more or less complete: Amphitruo (Amphitryon), Asinaria, Aulularia, Bacchides, Captivi, Casina, Cistellaria, Curculio, Epidicus, Menaechmi, Mercator, Miles gloriosus, Mostellaria, Persa, Poenulus, Pseudolus, Rudens, Stichus, Trinummus, Truculentus, and Vidularia (in fragments) - Columbia Encyclopedia. For some interesting tales and comments on Plautus see: Hadas, 'Ancilla'. A brief history of the Barbou Classics is given by Schweiger (II 1269). [Caraccioli, Louis Antoine de]
Amsterdam: chez E. van Harrevelt, 1759 The first edition was published in Paris in 1758 (Cioranescu 15473). Original marbled wrappers, uncut. . Twelvemo. Spine worn in places, intermittent light dampstain near top margin. Still, a very handsome, large copy. The Marquis de Caraccioli (1723-1803) was born and wrote in Paris, though he studied in Mans and travelled in Italy, Germany and Poland. He was a prolific writer of poetry, fiction, history, and biography. A frequent topic was manners and the follies associated with them. He came out with an edition of Pope Clement XIV's letters, which attracted a good deal of notice; some thought that the letters were of his own authorship. Book collectors know him best for the color-printed book, Le livre de quatre couleurs (1757), and its successor, Le livre à la mode (1759). The present book was one of his most popular: at least eight editions were published in the decade following this first edition. The present edition, is however, rare: OCLC lists only the Clark Library copy.

[Caraccioli, Louis-Antoine, Marquis de ]
[Paris: Duchesne], De L'Imprimérie du Printems [sic], au Perroquet, L'Année Nouvelle , [1759]. [Paris: Duchesne], De L'Imprimérie du Printems [sic], au Perroquet, L'Année Nouvelle [1759] First edition, with text in green. The preface announces a second edition in red, stating that the color change was to accommodate different tastes ("il faut contenter tous les gouts"), but the preface to the second edition states that there was a problem with the green inks used in the first ("La couleur verte n'ayant duré que huit jours, ainsi que toutes les modes, je vous offre le plus beau des vermillions…"). The second edition has a different collation. The first is scarcer than the second according to RLIN and OCLC records. (A variant in green ink with a different collation yet also exists, though Cioranescu does not mention it.). Contemporary paste-paper boards. Twelvemo. Spine extremities lightly worn, but sound. A good, clean copy. This is a satirical work, poking fun at eighteenth-century manners and customs. Caraccioli (1721-1803) was born and wrote in Paris, though he studied in Mans and travelled or worked as a diplomat in Italy, Germany and Poland. He was a prolific writer on education, fashion, and morals. Book collectors know him best for the present work and its predecessor, Le Livre de quatre couleurs, which is in fact printed in four colors.

JOUIN (Nicolas)]
- II. Affaire des cent-un tableaux. (HELVETIUS, C.A.)
A La Haye, Chez Pierre Moetjens, (Provins, Michelin), 1759. With title-vignettes, titles printed in red and black. 3 volumes. (4), viii, x, 244 pp.; (4), xi, 209 pp.; (4), 166, iv, 34 pp. 12mo. Contemporary polished calf, spines gilt in compartments, gilt fillets on sides, gilt lettering to spine, a very good copy. Smith, E.10; Keim p. 714; Thomas, Checklist, p. 72; not in Tchemerzine-Scheler. Rare clandestine edition, made 'à la Hollandaise' by Michelins in Provins, of this epoch-making work which brought together the 'philosophes' in a common front against their ennemies (see: Belin, Commerce des livres prohibés, p. 102). Claude Adrien Helvétius (1715-1771) obtained the lucrative post of fermier-général in which he soon grew rich. He became known, however, for the philantropic and enlightened uses he made of his great wealth, particularly as a patron of the philosophers and men of letters. He resigned in 1751 from tax-farming, married and retired to his country estate, thenceforth devoting himself primarily to philosophical and literary persuits. The publication in 1758 of his principal work, De l'Esprit, proved to be one of the ideological causes célébres of the eighteenth century. Appearing at a moment of political reaction, De l'Esprit was noisily condemned by the authorities, both ecclesiastical and ministerial, for its dangerously heretical and subversive opinions. No book during the eighteenth century, except perhaps Rousseau's Emile, evoked such an outcry from the religious and civil authorities or such universal public interest. Condemned as atheistic, materialist … [Click Below for Full Description]
