AESOP and John GILCHRIST (editor).
B.S. Kesavan, History of printing and publishing in India, p. 148; K. Smith Durlow, Early Indian imprints, p. 96. First edition of Indian, Arabic and Persian translations of ancient fables, most of them ascribed to Aesop. The work contains a total of 54 fables, each first given in English, followed by a translation (in the Latin script) into Urdu, Braj Bhasha, Bengali, Sanskrit, Persian and Arabic. The fables were translated from the English "by various hands" (title-page), but were supervised by the well-known Scottish surgeon and linguist John Borthwick Gilchrist (1759-1841). For many of the fables it was the first translation into an Indian language. As stated on the title-page, the book was published for the use at the Fort William College at Calcutta, established in 1800 as an learning centre for oriental studies.Title-page restored at the gutter, and a piece at the lower margin cut out, perhaps a former owner's inscription, restored. Some foxing and marginal water stains, mostly on the first and last few pages. Binding with a small wormhole, otherwise in good condition.

VOLTAIRE
" - S.n., s.l. Edition-originale.com - [AUTOMATIC ENGLISH TRANSLATION FOLLOWS] first edition, rare, with the first volume published in 1759 and … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Johnson Samuel]
Printed for R. and J. Dodsley and W. Johnston. 2 volumes. First edition, the first state with A2r of Vol. II reading "Contents,/Vol. II." The first edition consisted of 1500 copies in total, this being the most rare state. Small 8vo, bound in the original contemporary full calf, the covers with double-fillet gilt ruled frame, long ago expertly restored at the hinges in correct sympathy to the covers and spines, raised bands ruled in gilt and with gilt volume numbers, blanks present as called for, original end-leaves. Housed in a fine solander case of brown calf, the spine with raised bands and three red morocco labels gilt lettered and numbered. viii, 159pp; viii, 165 pp. Very scarce in full period calf in its earliest state, the text solid and quite fresh, very clean but for some minor expected age toning. The calf with some minor age-wear at the corners and normal evidence of age or use, sturdy and attractive and a pleasing and well-preserved and honest copy. RARE FIRST EDITION AND FIRST STATE ORIGINAL CONTEMPORARY BINDINGS. ESPECIALLY ELUSIVE THUS. This would eventually become Dr. Johnson's best selling and most popular work and it has never been out of print. The book was written in a single week to pay for the costs incurred in caring for Johnson's mother during her sickness and for her eventual funeral. It is also Johnson's only novel. Universally and immediately known as "Rasselas", the name was not actually given to the work until after the author's death. All of the editions published in Johnson's lifetime were done anonymously. Fleeman states that, "Johnson told R … [Click Below for Full Description]

Hamburg: [s.n.], 1759. 8vo (177 x 121 mm). 103 pp. Woodcut white-on-black title vignette (or printer's device?) of 3 grotesque figures hammering on an anvil. Untrimmed. Printing flaw to p. 26, with beginnings of lines faintly printed. Light soiling to first text page and to a few deckle edges, small wormhole through upper cover and first dozen leaves, occasional worming in gutters. Original plain wrappers with orange paper backstrip, the latter overlaid at top with a manuscript title label (torn and faded). *** First Italian Edition of Blondel's wide-ranging collection of meditations on social psychology (Des hommes tels qu'ils sont...), published in Paris the previous year. Blondel's loosely structured series of mildly reformist essays on human behavior and power relationships range from the political to the domestic and personal. In chapters on the people, the monarchy, and princes he contrasts the realities of each social stratum with what he views as their ideal expression. Chapters on celibacy, marriage, and men's attitudes toward women reinforce cultural stereotypes under the guise of reason and respect. Blondel describes the miserable conditions of the working classes as more painful to well-off observers like himself than to the victims, who are supposedly satisfied with their days of backbreaking labor, hovels and thin soups, since they know nothing else (pp. 61-62). His natural conclusion is to leave well enough alone, maintaining power securely in its present seat. In spite of (or because of) the tepidity of Blondel's pseudo-Enlightenment ideas, the brevity and r … [Click Below for Full Description]

Cooper, Samuel
Printed by Green & Russell, and Edes & Gill., Boston: New-England. xi, [1 blank], [13]-53 [3 blanks] pp, with the half title. Stitched into modern marbled wrappers. A short closed tear expertly repaired [no loss]. Very Good. With the contemporary ownership signature and inscription of James Cushing, 1759. Cooper, "for many years pastor of the Brattle Street Church, and later ardent defender of the rights of the colonists" [Streeter Sale 684], was an intimate friend of John Adams and Benjamin Franklin. He "became one of the most popular preachers in the country" [JCB Library]. This is one of only "a small number of sermons and miscellaneous pamphlets" that he wrote [DAB]. It illustrates the devotion to England that still permeated the Colonies, but also warns that continued loyalty depended upon Americans' enjoyment of the full panoply of British liberties. Cooper's delight in the English victory is sweetened by "a thorough Sense of the Importance of the American Service" in the reduction of the French capital. For Cooper, recounting the difficult task faced by the American troops, it proves "that a limited Government, happily administered, can command in uncommon Exigencies, a greater Aid from the People than the most unbounded Despotism." Americans "are attached to those priviledges which are the Birth-right of British Subjects." Indeed, "American Affairs do bear perhaps as near an Affinity to those of ancient Israel, as any modern Story; so that many Passages in the sacred Writings founded upon the peculiar Circumstances of that People, may with great Propriety be applied … [Click Below for Full Description]

Montaigne, Michel de.
London, S. and E. Ballard, 1759. Three volumes (complete). Octavo. Volume I: [28],414,[26] pages/ Volume II: [4],608 pages / Volume III: [36], [4],468,[27] pages. Original Hardcover (contemporary calf with gilt lettering on spine). Very good condition with the original spinelabels. Interior bright and clean. No foxing. Rear cover of Volume II nearly detached (this volume needs attention from a bookbinder). Provenience: From the library of Henry Augustus Viscount Dillon, with his bookplate / Exlibris in all three volumes. Michel Eyquem de Montaigne (28 February 1533 – 13 September 1592) was one of the most significant philosophers of the French Renaissance, known for popularizing the essay as a literary genre. His work is noted for its merging of casual anecdotes and autobiography with serious intellectual insight; his massive volume Essais (translated literally as "Attempts" or "Trials") contains some of the most influential essays ever written. Montaigne had a direct influence on writers all over the world, including Francis Bacon, René Descartes, Blaise Pascal, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Albert Hirschman, William Hazlitt, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Friedrich Nietzsche, Stefan Zweig, Eric Hoffer, Isaac Asimov, and possibly on the later works of William Shakespeare. In his own lifetime, Montaigne was admired more as a statesman than as an author. The tendency in his essays to digress into anecdotes and personal ruminations was seen as detrimental to proper style rather than as an innovation, and his declaration that, 'I am myself the matter of my book', was viewed by his contemporari … [Click Below for Full Description]

BALBASTRE (Claude).

[Attributes: Signed Copy]

[Map. Gulf of Finland] Åkerman, Anders
2 map leaves each measuring 55 x 74 cm. Plate marks 48 x 66,5 and 49 x 67 cm. Good margins. Rough edges with a couple of tears and creases. A few ugly stains. Many small creases in the map areas. A long repaired tear. Not the best copy. A spectacular map in two leaves covering the Gulf of Finland from Dagö to St. Petersburg including Helsinki and Reval (Talinn) and all the places on the coasts of Estonia, Finland and Russia. It was drawn by the engraver and globe maker Anders Åkerman. He founded a globe factory in Upsala in 1759 which operated until his death in 1778 when it moved to Stockholm. The globes were quite accurate and the plan was to create a lucrative export business, which in the end unfortunatelly failed. Domestically it worked better and a large portion of the estates in the country acquired a pair of the Åkerman globes (terrestrial and celestial). In 1768 Åkerman published Atlas Juvenilis, a very handsome school atals, issued in several editions throughout the 18th and early 19th century. The present map of the Gulf of Finland is a classic swedish map rarity. Always sought after by the collectors.

Johnston, Thomas:
[Boston, 1759. Copper engraving, 7 x 9 inches, on an approximately 9 1/2 x 12-inch sheet. Corners chipped, with minor paper loss, not affecting image. A few short marginal closed tears, neatly repaired. Some scattered dust soiling, a bit of stray ink along plate mark. A very good copy. In a half morocco box. One of the rarest and most important early American engravings, Thomas Johnston's view of Quebec is "the most important engraved view of that city, as well as the earliest executed by an American" (Deák). The view was prepared in conjunction with the British campaign against Canada, and was first advertised for sale in the BOSTON GAZETTE on Aug. 13, 1759, little more than a month before the French stronghold surrendered on Sept. 17. A key identifies twenty prominent sites which illustrate the importance of the capture. The involved publication history of the print reaches back forty- four years prior to its American appearance. A variation of the view first appeared in Paris about 1715, with the imprint of "A Paris, Chez Jean Crepy," and under the title of QUEBEC, VILLE CAPITAL DU CANADA OU NOUVELLE FRANCE, LE SIEGE D'UNE EVESQUE ET D'UNE COUR SOUVERAINE.... The title is followed by an eight-line description of the history of the settlement of New France, and this is in turn followed by a key to the twenty numbered buildings on the print. About the same time, circa 1715-20, it appeared under a different imprint, "A Paris Chez Chereau," with a slightly different title, reading QUEBEC, CAPITALE DE LA NOUVELLE FRANCE, EVESCHE, ET SIEGE DE COURT SOUVERAINE, with … [Click Below for Full Description]

The present work is contained within that work, but this is the material relating to children's health. There were many edition and translations that followed. Still adds, "So important were the Aphorisms considered that Gerhard Van Swieten of Leyden, who was subsequently the leading physician at Vienna and physician to the Empress Maria Theresa, spent, as Garrison points out, more than thirty years in composing a commentary on them; and a portion of this work, the Aphorisms with his commentary relating specially to diseases of children (Traite des maladies des enfans. . . Avignon, 1759)." – Still, p. 327. The book also contains a materia medica list of treatments for sick children as well as the Appendix. Grulee 589. [FFrye C188]
