Giuseppe VASI (Corleone, 27 Agosto 1710 - Roma, 16 Aprile 1782)
"View taken from 1786 edition of the Vasi's Delle Magnificenze di Roma Antica e Moderna (first edition, in X books, published between 1747-61). The work was enlarged and reissued under the title ""Raccolta delle più belle vedute antiche, e moderne di Roma"" by Mariano Vasi after his father's death. This edition contains most of the plates from the original work, supplemented by a small number of new engravings. Vasi fils appears to have kept this edition in print for a number of years (a further edition appeared in 1803), and, as RIBA notes, the 'total [number of plates] appears to have been made up with whatever prints were to hand, in addition to a the numbered core of the work (which was itself somewhat fluid)'. Etching, in very good condition." Scalabroni, 263

[KRAUSS, Johan Carl].
Jacobsen Jensen 301; Waller, Cat. Ned. populaire boeken 92. Beautifully illustrated and hand-coloured introduction to herbs and flowers, published as an almanac for women and girls and designed to teach them the principles of botany. It is the first of four annual volumes published. The first twelve plates show plant species of classes one to six and eight to thirteen, so the plates are accordingly numbered Cl. I-VI and VIII-XIII. Each plate is accompanied by one leaf of letterpress text. Even though these texts are numbered I-XII, the names and classes agree with the plates. These are preceded by 6 leaves containing the 12 months of the calendar and another 6 with information on eclipses, holidays, advice to girls or women interested in botany and an introduction to the botanical texts. The last two plates and the numbered pages then follow with a thorough instruction on herbs and flowers, which continued in the almanacs for the following three years. These rare almanacs, really quite thorough botanical instruction books, were edited by the celebrated botanist Johan Carl Krauss (1759-1826). In very good condition. The wrapper is slightly dirty and the spine slightly tattered, but also very good. A rare and lovely little almanac designed to teach botany to women and girls, with 14 coloured botanical plates.

Li Bai; Wang Qi
[China]: Bao hu lou, 1759. Sixteen woodblock-printed volumes, all on double leaves, bound in traditional Chinese style with thread, in a later blue folding cloth case. The leaves have all been carefully re-backed, apparently during the Republican era, so that wormholes and other minor areas of loss have been made sturdy; new exterior wrappers were also added to each volume. The blue case bulges somewhat with the thickness of the volumes contained within. While one of the prefaces is dated to the 23rd year of Qianlong, 1758, a date cited for some listings in OCLC, two other prefaces and the last page of the work are dated to the jimao year of Qianlong, or 1759. This set of blocks may have been used for a number of years to print new copies as called for, without any indication of the actual date of printing. The interior title page, which gives the title "Li Qinglian quan ji ji zhu," states that it was printed from the woodblocks stored at Bao hu lou. An important edition of the works of Li Bai, the Tang dynasty poet, also known in English as Li Po.

[SEYFART (or SEIFERT), Johann Friedrich]
Decorative woodcut initials, tables in the text, & one large engraved folding table heightened in gold & watercolor. 3 p.l., 139, [1] pp. Small 8vo, cont. red vellum over boards (spine faded to white), sides richly decorated in gilt, a.e.g., fore-edges painted & gauffered. Amsterdam: "Aux depens de la Compagnie," n.d. [1759?]. First edition, in a most attractive decorated binding, of this pioneering survey of the Prussian army. Seyfart (1727-86), a military administrator, was the first to systematically compose biographies of units and generals in the Prussian army. The present work provides detailed histories of units in the order of their creation. It describes infantry, cavalry, dragoon, hussar, garrison, skirmisher, and grenadier units. The finely engraved and large table (approximately 520 mm long), notes the name of every regiment in the Prussian army at the beginning of 1759, as well as the rank of each unit's ranking officer, the colors of the unit uniform (many heightened in gold), and the number of men and horses. At the bottom of the table, Seyfart determines that the Prussian army consists of 204,546 men and 38,562 horses in 121 regiments. Fine copy. 18th-century engraved bookplate of Max Emanuel of Toerring-Jettenbach (1715-73), Bavarian nobleman and president of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences.

Jahrhundert, p. 286; Quérard X, p. 466. First and only edition in French of the memoirs of a German postmaster, who spent the Seven Years' War as a prisoner in Siberia. After the capture of Prussian Pillau (modern Baltiysk) by Russia in 1759, Wagner (1735-1820) had unknowingly been sending Russian troop movements to the Prussians but was betrayed, arrested and subsequently deported to Siberia. Wagner was first sent to Tobolsk and then to Mangazeya, where he arrived more than a year after his arrest and would spend another three years. In the memoirs he "describes the hardships of living there without any self-pity. His observations and experiences during the transportation and finally in the Far North of Siberia are given to the reader in graphic details" (Robel). Wagner was released in 1763 and returned home after a journey lasting a year and a half, but denied any financial support by the Prussian king. The memoirs are followed by a description of the Russian Empire, drawing on earlier accounts but also containing original remarks. In writing his account, published in German in 1789, Wagner probably collaborated with Johann Heinrich Würzer, one of Prussia's fiercest Jacobins. Both the memoir and the description of Russia deliver accusations against rulers who are not interested in the wellbeing of their subjects and of the rights of people living under occupation. In very good condition. Binding worn at the edges, … [Click Below for Full Description]

AESOP and John GILCHRIST (editor).
B.S. Kesavan, History of printing and publishing in India, p. 148; K. Smith Durlow, Early Indian imprints, p. 96. First edition of Indian, Arabic and Persian translations of ancient fables, most of them ascribed to Aesop. The work contains a total of 54 fables, each first given in English, followed by a translation (in the Latin script) into Urdu, Braj Bhasha, Bengali, Sanskrit, Persian and Arabic. The fables were translated from the English "by various hands" (title-page), but were supervised by the well-known Scottish surgeon and linguist John Borthwick Gilchrist (1759-1841). For many of the fables it was the first translation into an Indian language. As stated on the title-page, the book was published for the use at the Fort William College at Calcutta, established in 1800 as an learning centre for oriental studies.Title-page restored at the gutter, and a piece at the lower margin cut out, perhaps a former owner's inscription, restored. Some foxing and marginal water stains, mostly on the first and last few pages. Binding with a small wormhole, otherwise in good condition.

" - S.n., s.l. Edition-originale.com - [AUTOMATIC ENGLISH TRANSLATION FOLLOWS] first edition, rare, with the first volume published in 1759 and … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Johnson Samuel]
Printed for R. and J. Dodsley and W. Johnston. 2 volumes. First edition, the first state with A2r of Vol. II reading "Contents,/Vol. II." The first edition consisted of 1500 copies in total, this being the most rare state. Small 8vo, bound in the original contemporary full calf, the covers with double-fillet gilt ruled frame, long ago expertly restored at the hinges in correct sympathy to the covers and spines, raised bands ruled in gilt and with gilt volume numbers, blanks present as called for, original end-leaves. Housed in a fine solander case of brown calf, the spine with raised bands and three red morocco labels gilt lettered and numbered. viii, 159pp; viii, 165 pp. Very scarce in full period calf in its earliest state, the text solid and quite fresh, very clean but for some minor expected age toning. The calf with some minor age-wear at the corners and normal evidence of age or use, sturdy and attractive and a pleasing and well-preserved and honest copy. RARE FIRST EDITION AND FIRST STATE ORIGINAL CONTEMPORARY BINDINGS. ESPECIALLY ELUSIVE THUS. This would eventually become Dr. Johnson's best selling and most popular work and it has never been out of print. The book was written in a single week to pay for the costs incurred in caring for Johnson's mother during her sickness and for her eventual funeral. It is also Johnson's only novel. Universally and immediately known as "Rasselas", the name was not actually given to the work until after the author's death. All of the editions published in Johnson's lifetime were done anonymously. Printing flaw to p. 26, with beginnings of lines faintly printed. Light soiling to first text page and to a few deckle edges, small wormhole through upper cover and first dozen leaves, occasional worming in gutters. Original plain wrappers with orange paper backstrip, the latter overlaid at top with a manuscript title label (torn and faded). *** First Italian Edition of Blondel's wide-ranging collection of meditations on social psychology (Des hommes tels qu'ils sont...), published in Paris the previous year. Blondel's loosely structured series of mildly reformist essays on human behavior and power relationships range from the political to the domestic and personal. In chapters on the people, the monarchy, and princes he contrasts the realities of each social stratum with what he views as their ideal expression. Chapters on celibacy, marriage, and men's attitudes toward women reinforce cultural stereotypes under the guise of reason and respect. Blondel describes the miserable conditions of the working classes as more painful to well-off observers like himself than to the victims, who are supposedly satisfied with their days of backbreaking labor, hovels and thin soups, since they know nothing else (pp. 61-62). His natural conclusion is to leave well enough alone, maintaining power securely in its present seat. Cooper, Samuel
Printed by Green & Russell, and Edes & Gill., Boston: New-England. xi, [1 blank], [13]-53 [3 blanks] pp, with the half title. Stitched into modern marbled wrappers. A short closed tear expertly repaired [no loss]. Very Good. With the contemporary ownership signature and inscription of James Cushing, 1759. Cooper, "for many years pastor of the Brattle Street Church, and later ardent defender of the rights of the colonists" [Streeter Sale 684], was an intimate friend of John Adams and Benjamin Franklin. He "became one of the most popular preachers in the country" [JCB Library]. This is one of only "a small number of sermons and miscellaneous pamphlets" that he wrote [DAB]. It illustrates the devotion to England that still permeated the Colonies, but also warns that continued loyalty depended upon Americans' enjoyment of the full panoply of British liberties. Cooper's delight in the English victory is sweetened by "a thorough Sense of the Importance of the American Service" in the reduction of the French capital. For Cooper, recounting the difficult task faced by the American troops, it proves "that a limited Government, happily administered, can command in uncommon Exigencies, a greater Aid from the People than the most unbounded Despotism." Americans "are attached to those priviledges which are the Birth-right of British Subjects." Indeed, "American Affairs do bear perhaps as near an Affinity to those of ancient Israel, as any modern Story; so that many Passages in the sacred Writings founded upon the peculiar Circumstances of that People, may with great Propriety be applied … [Click Below for Full Description]

Montaigne, Michel de.
London, S. and E. Ballard, 1759. Three volumes (complete). Octavo. Volume I: [28],414,[26] pages/ Volume II: [4],608 pages / Volume III: [36], [4],468,[27] pages. Original Hardcover (contemporary calf with gilt lettering on spine). Very good condition with the original spinelabels. Interior bright and clean. No foxing. Rear cover of Volume II nearly detached (this volume needs attention from a bookbinder). Provenience: From the library of Henry Augustus Viscount Dillon, with his bookplate / Exlibris in all three volumes. Michel Eyquem de Montaigne (28 February 1533 – 13 September 1592) was one of the most significant philosophers of the French Renaissance, known for popularizing the essay as a literary genre. His work is noted for its merging of casual anecdotes and autobiography with serious intellectual insight; his massive volume Essais (translated literally as "Attempts" or "Trials") contains some of the most influential essays ever written. Montaigne had a direct influence on writers all over the world, including Francis Bacon, René Descartes, Blaise Pascal, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Albert Hirschman, William Hazlitt, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Friedrich Nietzsche, Stefan Zweig, Eric Hoffer, Isaac Asimov, and possibly on the later works of William Shakespeare. In his own lifetime, Montaigne was admired more as a statesman than as an author. The tendency in his essays to digress into anecdotes and personal ruminations was seen as detrimental to proper style rather than as an innovation, and his declaration that, 'I am myself the matter of my book', was viewed by his contemporari … [Click Below for Full Description]
