Porträt von Friedrich Wilhelm Gleim, 1759

1759. Kupferstich auf Papier, Inschrift: "Friedrich Wilhelm GLEIM", Signatur: "FKauke Sc. 1759", Papier: 17,8 cm x 10,1 cm, Platte: ca. 16,7 cm x 10,0 cm, Darstellung: 15,7 cm x 9,4 cm.

Seizure of Dutch vessel by British Privateers, an "Inhibition and Monition" issued 1759 by the New York High Court of Appeal for Prizes, and attested and signed by John Cruger Jr., Mayor of New York.

New York: 1759 - A fascinating window on British privateering during the Seven Years War with France and its broader implications for the colony of New York. This document pertains to the consequences of the recently enacted British Parliament's Rule of 1756, which declared that neutral ships carrying enemy cargo were in fact legal prizes, on a privateering case before the Admiralty court in colonial New York. This is an example of the complications that had arisen under admiralty law, in which privateers seized cargo from neutral vessels (which was not permitted) because they deemed the cargo itself to be from a hostile nation. The commanders of the British privateers 'Defiance', 'Delancey' and 'Marlborough' alleged that the cargo of the Dutch vessel 'De Vrouw Clara Magdalena' could be seized in spite of the fact that the ship belonged to the neutral Dutch because the cargo was said to be French. This was presented before Lewis Morris, vice admiralty court judge, who ruled in favor of the privateers. However, the Clara Magdalena's Dutch owners appealed, and this "Inhibition Citation and Monition" prevents the British privateers from taking possession of the cargo until the appeal is heard in the Privy Council Chamber in the Cockpit, London.Lewis Morris Jr. (1698 - 1762), was a son of the wealthy and powerful colonial landholder Lewis Morris Sr. Lewis Jr. used his influential position as judge on the admiralty court for the benefit of the colony and for himself. Here Morris ruled in favor of the British privateers, a decision which would benefit the British war effort, Morris' own career and the colony of New York. Morris's position as judge was a powerful one because it originated with the Admiralty and couldn't be revoked by the colonial governor; also, as an admiralty judge his court did not include juries, so his decisions were his own. Morris understood how privateering could be financially beneficial to New York; between 1739 and 1748 privateers brought 91 prizes to New York, attracted there by Morris' efforts on their behalf. As a result of Parliament's Rule of 1756, Morris, who felt that he was expert at discovering deception in Dutch ships' papers, condemned almost every Dutch ship captured by privateers as "lawful prize". John Cruger, Jr. (1710 - 1791) was a colonial New York merchant from a large ship owning family, the fortieth Mayor of the city (from 1757 to 1766), the speaker of the Province of New York assembly (1769 to 1775), a member of New York's delegation to the Stamp Act Congress and a Member of the Committee of Correspondence. While in the Assembly he voted against approval of the proceedings of the First Continental Congress and was named as a "suspected" persons at the New York Provincial Congress in 1776. Cruger left the city in 1776, and stayed in the Dutch loyalist town of Kinderhook, returning to New York City in 1783. One of a number of original manuscripts on vellum,15 3/4 x 13 1/2" with the seal of the Court and attested by the Mayor of New York (signed John Cruger) on a separate attached sheet 7 1/4 x 12" with seal. On the verso of the manuscript, the signed statement of the server, John McKesson.

[Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Document Signed

Confidant of Missouri pioneer Jonathan Bryan (1759-1846) of the noted St. Charles family whose relatives included their neighbor Daniel Boone. DS, 1p, 7½" X 12", St. Charles County, MO, 1847 February 2. Near fine. Acknowledgment that Tuter, who signs himself as "Administrator of the Estate of Johnathan Bryan," has had a writ of replevin made out and issued to the St. Charles sheriff, Edward C. Cunningham (1809-65), for delivery to an unnamed offender. The writ seeks to recover the following property apparently wrongfully taken from Jonathan Bryan's estate: "one negro man a Slave named Heney one Two horse waggon and one pair of Briches Two Black horses one Lorrel horse with bold face one walnut Cupboard one clock one Bureau one bedstead and bedding one walnut Table one Trunk one Bible...." In other words, everything but the kitchen sink. Signed at the conclusion by Tater (in his definitely untutored hand). Tales of slaves are found in the Bryan family lore, such as: "Mrs. Jonathan Bryan, a kinswoman of Daniel Boone, was working in her yard with a slave woman when a boy slave screamed. She saw an Indian warrior heading for them with a tomahawk in one hand, and a gun in the other. The women ran for the house. Just as they were slamming the door, they caught the warrior's head and right arm between the door and facing. The slave woman grabbed the hatchet from his hand and killed him with a sharp blow. The women had barely recovered from their fright when the boy shouted again...." Could the slave boy in this old family legend by none less than the "Slave named Heney" whose return is demanded in this replevin suit? Quite unusual slavery item with an intriguing history.

The Great Charter and Charter of the Forest, With Other Authentic

, 1759. 1759. Blackstone's Handsome Edition of Magna Carta Blackstone, Sir William [1723-1780]. The Great Charter and Charter of the Forest, With Other Authentic Instruments: To Which is Prefixed an Introductory Discourse, Containing the History of the Charters. Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1759. [iv], lxxvi, [iv], 86 pp. As in many copies, the half-title and table of contents (Tabula) are bound between pp lxxvi and p. 1. Folio (13-1/2" x 10-1/2"). Recent period-style calf, gilt fillets with corner fleurons to boards, raised bands, lettering piece and gilt ornaments to spine, speckled edges, marbled endpapers added. Copperplate initials and vignettes. Light toning to text, negligible faint dampspotting in places, faint offsetting from vignettes, internally clean. A handsome copy. * First edition. Texts of documents in Latin, Blackstone's essay in English. The engraved dedication to the Earl of Westmoreland is surmounted with his armorial ensigns; initials in the text are ornamented with engravings of various buildings at Oxford University. The tail-pieces on pages lxxvi and 73 are historical vignettes; the other ten tail-pieces are facsimiles of the royal seals that are attached to the original documents. This remarkable work is esteemed for its production and scholarship. Its physical appeal was recognized as early as 1829 in Richard Thompson's An Historical Essay on the Magna Charta of King John, which described it as a "beautiful and rare edition." Blackstone's essay, which is based on a great deal of original research, argued that the charter was the foundation of English liberties. This idea, first proposed by Coke, was a central tenet of Whig ideology. More important, Blackstone's research into the original texts demonstrated that all earlier editions of the charter were based on the significantly different reissue of 1225, in the reign of Henry III, rather than the original one endorsed at Runnymede. His philological approach was highly influential; it established the textual focus that has governed subsequent study of the charter. Eller notes that Worrall's Bibliotheca Legum Angliae (1788) lists an edition from 1758 with the title Magna Charta and Charta de Foresta. She was not able to locate any copies, however. Later research indicates that this edition is a ghost. Holli

[Gesellenbrief]

The plates and text-blocks generally very clean and fresh. RARE FIRST EDITION OF WHAT IS GENERALLY CONSIDERED TO BE ONE OF THE GREATEST FRENCH BOOKS OF ALL TIME AND ONE OF THE FINEST ILLUSTRATED BOOKS EVER TO BE PRODUCED, ONE OF THE MOST AMBITIOUS AND SUCCESSFUL EVER PRODUCED, AND THE ZENITH OF THE 18TH CENTURY DECORATED BOOK IN FRANCE. ?THE FABLES of La Fontaine are known universally and exhibit the versatility and fecundity of the author's talent more fully than any of his other work. For his edition of THE FABLES, La Fontaine, the great French poet took inspiration from Aesop, Horace, Boccaccio and Ariosto and Tasso, Machiavelli's comedies, and Eastern stories that in his epoch were transmitted through translations from the Persian. The boldness of the politics is as much to be considered as the ingenuity of the moralizing, as the intimate knowledge of human nature displayed in the substance of the narratives, or as the artistic mastery shown in their form. Perhaps the best criticism ever passed upon La Fontaine's FABLES is that of Silvestre de Sacy, to the effect that they supply delights to three different ages: the child rejoices in the freshness and vividness of the story, the eager student of literature in the consummate art with which it is told, the experienced man of the world in the subtle reflections on character and life which it conveys. Nor has any one, with the exception of a few paradoxers.denied that the moral tone of the whole is as fresh and healthy as its literary interest is vivid. The book has therefore naturally become a standard French reader both at home and abroad. It is no small testimony to its merit that not even this use (or misuse) has interfered with its popularity. Oudry, (1686 - 1755) was one of the most famous artists of France. His artwork, designed for La Fontaine?s FABLES, the most famous production of the great French author is considered the most masterful interpretation of the most famous fabulist. He served both Louis XV and Louis Fagon (1680-1744), an Intendant des Finances and book collector. Oudry decorated his houses in Vanves and Fontenay-aux-Roses with arabesques, flowers and birds. Fagon was charged with reviving the fortunes of the tapestry manufactory of Beauvais, which had flourished under Colbert, and he gave the task to Oudry and his associate, Besnier, in 1734. Oudry succeeded in his tasks, becoming wealthy in the process. His success at Beauvais led to a further appointment as inspector at the Gobelins manufactory in 1736, where his works were copied as cartoons for tapestries. Through most of the 1730s, he concentrated mainly on producing des [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

The Chemical Works...abridged and methodized. With large additions, containing the latest discoveries and improvements made in chemistry and the arts depending thereon, by William Lewis...

FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH, with considerable additions by the translator William Lewis (author of Commercium Philosophico-Technicum, London, 1763-65) from his own experiments. Neumann (1683-1737) contributed significantly to the establishment of Stahlian chemistry in Germany and its dissemination throughout Europe. "He distinguished clearly between pure and applied chemistry and insisted that the chemical approach to nature was vastly superior to the mechanical philosophy" (DSB).
