The South Sea Company, founded in 1711, had its origin in the idea that the state could sell trading monopolies in return for funds to reduce the national debt. It was granted a monolpoly of the British trade with South America and the Pacific Islands, the riches of which were assumed to be unlimited. Up to 1719 the company appeared prosperous and successful in servicing its responsibility to the national debt, but in 1719 it took on the whole of the national debt in return for further concessions, beating off competition from the Bank of England for the privilege and profits. However, by 1720 speculation in stocks in the company was getting out of hand, and numerous companies were formed copying the techniques, and as the growth in sellers of stock rapidly outweighed the buyers, with the stocks falling from 1000 to 175, in days, and continuing downwards, dragging everyone else, including the Bank of England in their wake. By the year's end thousands had been ruined, and Parliament was investigating the affair. When large scale fraud and corruption was exposed by this investigation, the directors estates and assets were confiscated. The company actually managed to trade on until around 1750, and then sold out its remaining rights to the Spanish government. By 1807 all its rights were finally taken away, and in 1853 the final annuities were redeemed or converted into government stocks. Size: Large Folio. Quantity Available: 1.

First edition. Removed. Near fine, inked page numbers in upper right corner, lower corner of first leaf with a faint crease.. [2], 41, [1] pp. Illus. with Portuguese coat of arms on title page. "A rare and interesting document which outlines the regulations for the administration of Indian missions in Para and Maranha? following the secularization of the missions by the Portuguese Crown" (Lilly Library). Dated 3 de Mayo de 1757 and signed: Francisco Xavier de Mendoça Furtado [governador], followed by the Alvará dated 17 de Agosto de 1758 and signed: Sebastia? Joseph de Carvalho e Mello. The original law to abolish Indian slavery in Pará and Maranha? was passed June 6, 1755, but Pombal, who had seen to its passing, and his half-brother, Furtado, "immediately began to worry... that the Indians would revert to their primitive laziness." Instead of working for the colonists or the state they would be more concerned with their families. Thus Governor Furtado did not bother to published the law until two years later in this document in 1757 where he added this new system, Directorio de Indios, which placed a white director into each native village, directors who would supposedly teach the Indians to be civilized and encourage commerce, promote intermarriage between Indians and Portuguese, and lead them to become rich Christians. "In return for supposed teaching the Indians the Portuguese language, European methods of farming and trade, and domestic skills, the directors were to handle all the commercial transactions of their charges and were to receive 17 per cent of any gross income...[in addition to a 10 percent state tax... and furthermore]... all Indian males aged between thirteen and 60 were still required to work on 'public works' and to spend half of each year working for the colonists... Observers in Brazil immediately warned that such appalling legislation would lead to disaster," Leslie Bethel, "Colonial Brazil" (Cambridge, 1987; pp., 187-8). The provisions were later extended to all Amerindians in Brazil. Only one at auction since 1980. Rodrigues 883. Borba de Moraes I, p 226. Gauz: Portuguese and Brazilian Books in the John Carter Brown Library 758/4. Lilly Library: Brazil from Discovery to Independence 14.

        Book of Common Prayer

1758 - BOOK OF COMMON PRAYER. The Book of Common Prayer. Cambridge: Joseph Bentham, and Benj. Dod, 1758. Quarto, contemporary full green morocco, elaborately gilt-decorated spine, raised bands, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. $2200.Lovely 1758 Cambridge quarto edition of the magisterial Book of Common Prayer, handsomely bound in contemporary full morocco-gilt.Born of Thomas Cranmer's desire for liturgical texts upon which all of Europe's Protestant, English-speaking churches could agree, and which all English-speaking believers could easily comprehend, the Book of Common Prayer, first issued in 1549, has become what Diarmaid MacCulloch calls "one of a handful of texts to have decided the future of a world language." "Cranmer had been a Cambridge scholar (he had held a lectureship in Biblical studies) and a diplomat, before being plucked by Henry VIII to be archbishop, and he almost certainly did not imagine that he was writing one of the great, abiding works of English literature". But the acute poetry, balanced sonorities, heavy order, and direct intimacy of Cranmer's prose have achieved permanence, and many of his phrases and sentences are as famous as lines from Shakespeare or the King James Bible" (The New Yorker). Beyond its vocabulary and phraseology, the prayer book is "for most Englishmen second only to the Bible" (PMM 75). Bound with a contemporary edition of Sternhold and Hopkins' popular metrical psalter. Though the title page is dated 1758, this copy contains four cancel leaves (2C1-4) with prayers celebrating the accession of George III in 1760, instead of the prayers commemorating the accession of George II as called for in the Table of Contents ("A Form of Prayer for the 22d Day of June"). Also included (leaf 2C4r) is a proclamation by George III dated 7 October 1761. Griffiths 1758:6. Old owner inscriptions.Occasional light foxing. Restoration to gutter of leaf [C5]. Spine toned to brown, one vertical crack; light abrasions to boards. A handsome volume in near-fine condition. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Na officina de Miguel Rodrigues, impressor do Eminentissimo Senhor Cardeal Patriarca, [Lisboa] 1758 - [2], 41, [1] pp. Illus. with Portuguese coat of arms on title page. "A rare and interesting document which outlines the regulations for the administration of Indian missions in Para and Maranhaõ following the secularization of the missions by the Portuguese Crown" (Lilly Library). Dated 3 de Mayo de 1757 and signed: Francisco Xavier de Mendoça Furtado [governador], followed by the Alvará dated 17 de Agosto de 1758 and signed: Sebastiaõ Joseph de Carvalho e Mello. The original law to abolish Indian slavery in Pará and Maranhaõ was passed June 6, 1755, but Pombal, who had seen to its passing, and his half-brother, Furtado, "immediately began to worry. that the Indians would revert to their primitive laziness." Instead of working for the colonists or the state they would be more concerned with their families. "In return for supposed teaching the Indians the Portuguese language, European methods of farming and trade, and domestic skills, the directors were to handle all the commercial transactions of their charges and were to receive 17 per cent of any gross income.[in addition to a 10 percent state tax. and furthermore]. all Indian males aged between thirteen and 60 were still required to work on 'public works' and to spend half of each year working for the colonists. Historiae naturalis de serpentibus libri duo.

Heilbronn, F. J. Eckebrecht, 1758. Folio (37.7 x 22.6 cm). 55, [iii] pp.; 12 engraved plates. Contemporary (probably original) paper-covered boards. Short title in script on spine.= The complete part on snakes and "dragons" of John Jonston's famous "Historiae naturalis". This part, with fine illustrations of real snakes, as well as both a charming and bewildering variety of little dragons has always been one of the most popular parts. Perhaps that is why the German printer and publisher Frank Joseph Eckebrecht fully reprinted this work in 1758. Nine years later he also reprinted Jonston's book on fishes. 1758, of course is the year in which Linnaeus saw the tenth edition of his Systema Naturae published, a point in time when the existence of real dragons was much in doubt among serious zoologists. This may be the reason for Eckebrecht to shorten the title from the original "Historiae naturalis de serpentibus et draconibus". Linnaeus, however, based some of his new species on Jonston's descriptions and illustrations. Today, this edition, which was printed on much better, thicker paper, is much rarer than the earlier Frankfurt and Amsterdam "thin paper" editions. Uncut. Plate 8 bound after plate 9, otherwise the binder's instructions are followed. A very good, clean copy. Very rare. Nissen ZBI, 2135 (Amsterdam and Frankfurt editions).

PART OF THE EASTERN MAIN OF HUDSON'S BAY, OTHERWISE CALLED TERRA LABRADOR, EXTENDING NORTHWARD FROM THE STREIGHTS OF BELLE-ISLE, PARTLY INHABITED BY THE ESKIMAUX INDIANS... [manuscript title]

[Boston, 1758. Ink and watercolor manuscript map, drawn on two sheets each 10 3/4 x 29 3/4 inches. Sheets disjoined, light staining from glue remnants at inner edges of both sheets. Some dust soiling around edges and in rightmost map quadrant, a few patches of dark dampstaining in and around title area. Minor chips around edges, 2 3/4 inch tear in blank right margin. Light tanning. Good plus. Manuscript coastal survey with watercolor accents of the route of Captain Henry Atkins on his third voyage to Labrador in 1758, charting his course along the eastern coast of Labrador from the Strait of Belle Isle north to Davis Inlet and beyond. The chart marks the track of Atkins route, gives depth soundings approximately every mile, and identifies many of the islands fringing the coast and the bays and inlets along the coast. The title is set in the upper left corner, with scale below, an additional small cartouche to the right noting that a J. Leach made this copy from the original chart drawn up by Atkins, and a large compass rose on each sheet. Henry Atkins made three trips to Labrador in 1729, 1753, and 1758, where he was one of the first whalers to hunt sperm whales so far north on the North American coast, identified several viable fishing areas, and established trade with local Inuits. When he returned nearly thirty years later, he stopped in Boston to attract sponsors, one of whom was the Governor Francis Bernard, in whose papers the original account of the Atkins voyage resides. A unique document of important early exploration of Labrador and the northeastern Canadian coast.

      - Chez Gissey, à Paris 1758, In 4 (20,5x26,5cm), xiv, 588pp., relié. - First Edition. Bionda Vitello Pieno marmorizzato tempo. Torna lavorato in rilievo. Parte del titolo in marocchino rosso. Tappo testa logoro. Mascella superiore diviso in protezione e la testa. 2 angoli urtato.

Tutti i bordi rossi. Alcune frizioni e angoli smussati.

Bel exemplaire. INED, 4441; Kress, 5691; Einaudi, 1927.
