L'ARCHITETTURA DI M. VITRUVIO POLLIONE. Colla traduzione italiana e comento del Marchese Berardo Galiani.

In folio (mm. 400x258), bella legat. in p. pergam. coeva, cornice dorata ai piatti, decoraz. e tit. oro su tassello al dorso, tagli rossi, 4 cc.nn. (inclusa l?antip.), XXXII,462 pp.num., 1 c.nn.

Paris: Chez Durand 1758 Paris: Chez Durand, 1758. First edition, second issue. 4to (9-3/4 x 7-1/4 inches). [4], xxii, 643, [1] pp. Contemporary mottled calf, gilt spine with red leather label, marbled endpapers and edges. Upper joint starting but solid, half-title with small stain at outer edge, overall a fresh, crisp copy. Smith E.1B . First edition of the last major work of the French philosopher and encyclopEdiste, Helvetius, DE L'ESPRIT (On the Mind) was condemned by the Church and the Sorbonne for its uncompromising atheism, regarded as dangerously revolutionary by the Court of Louis XV, and publicly condemned by Parliament. A follower of Locke's empiricism, Helvetius's work was an important development in the history of utilitarian thought, and both Bentham and Mill were strongly influenced by Helvetius' elaboration of a theory which saw mankind as the product of his environment and his education. The first issue of the first edition is very rare: Smith locates only 15 copies. Although the second issue of the 1758 quarto is not as rare as the first, it should be noted that only one copy of the First edition has appeared at auction (in ABPC) since 1975, and that copy was the first issue; no copies of the second issue have appeared for 30 years

        De l'Esprit.

Paris, Chez Durand, 1758. 4to. Very nice cont. full mottled calf w. five raised bands on richly gilt back. All edges of boards gilt. Top-layer of leather on back-board gone. Upper hinges a bit weak, top-capital worn. Internally very nice and clean. W. the large armorial bookplate of Lord Viscount Lymington. W. half-title. Large woodcut title-vignette and many smaller vignettes throughout. (4), XII, 643, (1, Approbation + Privilege) pp.. First edition, second issue of the monumental work of French Enlightenment. Helvetius' main work, because of which he is remembered today. The work caused an immense uproar, when it appeared. It was considered heretical, atheistic, immoral etc. and lost its privilege within a few weeks; it was heavily condemned by the Church and the State and was burnt by the Hangman, the plan being to destroy all copies of it. Rarely had a book been met with such opposition, condemned by both the son of Louis XV and the Sorbonne, and the priests succeeded in convincing the court that the doctrines presented in this work could hardly be more dangerous, so even though Helvetius wrote three retractions, the book was still publically burned. Probably due to the noisy condemnation of the work, it was almost immediately translated into all European languages, making it quite influential. The likes of Bentham and Mill were influenced by the early utilitarian thoughts presented in the work, but apparently France was not ready for these new thoughts. When the Encyclopédie of Diderot and d'Alembert was suppressed for the second time, this had much to do with De l'Esprit, since Helvetius was thought to have been inspired by the dangerous encyclopedia. Both issues of the first edition are rare, and only four complete copies are known of the first issue. The printing history of the work is extremely complicated, but due to David Smith's bibliography from 2001, it has now been possible to positively identify this copy as being the first edition, second issue, i.e. E.1B. Not in Graesse, not in Brunet. From the library of Lord Viscount Lymington, who was married to Catherine Conduitt; because of her mother being the niece of Newton, his books and manuscripts ended up in the library of Viscount Lymington

Försök til mineralogie, eller mineral-rikets upställning.

Sthlm, Wildiska tryckeriet, 1758. 8:o. (40),251 s.
