Contemporary notation on title, stamp of Society of Jesus on flyleaf, & booklabel. FIRST EDITION. This famous defense of intolerance offered some very interesting observations on demography in its analysis of the political causes and effects of the St. Bartholomew's Day massacre and expulsion of Protestants from France. At the time of writing the issue of tolerance had come up again, and Caveirac's work made a considerable stir. The author of the N.B.G. article on him compared it to Naude's work of similar title on science and magic. Sauvy, 'Quelques demographes ignore du XVIIIe siecle,' in Spengler, Economie et population. Les doctrines francaises avant 1800. De Bude a Condorcet (transl.of his French predecessors of Malthus;1954) 362-68. INED 3400 bis. Not in Kress, Goldsmiths or Einaudi.

An Account of Two Missionary Voyages by the Appointment of the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts. The one to New Jersey in North America, the other from America to the Coast of Guiney

London: Benjamin Dod, 1758 Book. Very Good. Leather Bound. 1st Edition. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. London: Benjamin Dod, 1758. First Edition. Octavo. [iv], 87 pp. Later brown full calf. A very good copy. "Thompson's account of his proselytizing efforts in the American colonies and along the west coast of Africa on behalf of the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel. He was the first Anglican missionary to Africa, and two decades later wrote a defence of the slave trade at the behest of the S.P.G., which was active in the trade" (Christies). "Thompson published in 1758 An Account of Two Missionary Voyages, a lively narrative of his experiences. Then, when the abolition campaign began, he seems to have been asked by his former employers to write in their defence. As he had been for five years the employee of a company which was principally concerned with trading in slaves, and had associated in an always perfectly amicable way with their African suppliers and customers, it need be no surprise that he was ready to publish, in 1772, a thirty-one page pamphlet, The African trade for negro slaves shown to be consistent with principles of humanity and with the laws of revealed religion. He drew on the Bible to justify slavery, and also on African practice, remarking that: 'The customs of the blacks are many of them good rules of policy, such as would not disgrace a more regular constitution' (Thompson, The African Trade, 25). His pamphlet elicited a few pages of angry retort from Granville Sharp, beginning: 'For shame, Mr Thompson!' (Sharp, 29), incorporated in his The Just Limitation of Slavery (1776)" (Oxford DNB); Howes T203; Howgego F59; Sabin 95529..

The book of nature; or, the history of insects

Seyffert, London 1758 - Swammerdam, Jan (1637-80). The book of nature; or, the history of insects. . . . With the life of the author, by Herman Boerhaave. Translated from the Dutch and Latin original edition, by Thomas Flloyd. Revised and improved by notes from Reaumur and others by John Hill, M.D. 2 parts in 1, folio. [6], xx, [6], 236; 153, lxiii, [12]pp. 53 engraved plates, a few by Swammerdam. London: C. G. Seyffert, 1758. 440 x 274 mm. (uncut). Quarter calf, marbled boards in period style. Edges a bit frayed, light toning, but very good.First Edition in English. See Dibner 191. Despite a scientific career that lasted only a dozen years, Swammerdam was one of the outstanding comparative anatomists of the seventeenth century. His most remarkable work was in the field of insect anatomy, which he undertook in order to disprove Aristotle’s claims that insects lack internal anatomy, develop by metamorphosis (sudden and complete transformation) and arise from spontaneous generation. By refining his techniques of microdissection and injection to the point where he could use them on the smallest and most delicate anatomical parts, Swammerdam was able to illustrate for the first time the complex internal structures of insects, including their reproductive organs; and to demonstrate the gradual development of an insect’s adult form throughout all its larval stages. These observations are "indubitably the foundation of our modern knowledge of the structure, metamorphosis and classification of insects" (Cole, p. 285). In addition, Swammerdam performed valuable investigations of crustaceans, mollusks and frogs, and was the first to prove experimentally that muscles do not increase in bulk when contracted via nerve stimulation. The Biblia natura, Swammerdam’s major work, was published fifty-seven years after his death by Herman Boerhaave (1668-1738), who assembled it from unpublished manuscript materials integrated with a slightly revised version of Swammerdam’s Historia insectorum generalis (1669). Boerhaave’s biography of the author, which prefaces the work, remains the chief published source of information about Swammerdam’s life. The English translation of Biblia natura was prepared by the physician John Hill (1716?-75), author of several botanical treatises (including the monumental Vegetable System [1759-75]) and a host of miscellaneous works. Brazier, Neurophysiology in the 17th and 18th Centuries, pp. 40-45. Cole, History of Comparative Anatomy, pp. 270-305; Library of Early Medicine & Zoology, 731.

Octavo (166 × 96 mm) Contemporary streaked calf, tan morocco label, raised bands with gilt reeding, compartments gilt with penels enclosing a floaral tool, edges stained red, marbled endpapers. Housed in a neat tan cloth drop-back box. Half-title bound in. Somewhat worn, stripping from the boards, upper joint cracking but sound, erosion at the corners and edges, particularly the lower rear, with some minor loss to the lower fore-corner of the rear endpapers and last few leaves, text unaffected, light toning to the text, but overall a very good, honest copy in unrestored contemporary condition. First French edition, one year after the first London. An extremely interesting account of India in the mid-eighteenth century; "a compendium of observations on both English and Indian cultures … the declining power of the Mughal government, and its replacement with English measures. A plethora of observations on subjects such as trade, fortifications, public buildings, and relations with the French" (Riddick) these last probably accounting for its rapid translation. Born in 1732, the son of an immigrant Swiss jeweller; "After taking a course in writing and merchants' accounts at J. Bland's academy in Bishopsgate, Grose was elected a writer in the East India Company in November 1749 and arrived to serve in the Bombay presidency in August 1750. He was advanced to deputy secretary early in 1753, but his career ended soon after, when he was dismissed the service and sent home, 'having been deprived of his senses for some months past, and there being no hope of his recovery'" (ODNB). His life thereafter was somewhat rackety, running through his inheritance in his father's lifetime and being forced by debt to flee to France where he lived for four years. "His mother's death brought another inheritance (though vested in two of his brothers), [when] he returned to England in 1774, but only after being imprisoned for attempting to travel without a passport and badly injuring one of those arresting him. No later reference to him has been found." The editing, and augmentation, of this work for publication has recently been shown to be the work of John Cleland. In his "avertissement" the translator, Philippe Hernandez, remarks that Grose had been "plus … aidé" [greatly assisted] by "M. Cl.", "homme célébre en Angleterre par ses productions, son style & son gout" [famous in England his works, style and taste]. Circumstantially this identification of Cleland as "a key collaborator or perhaps the text's ghostwriter"could be seen as being confirmed by the fact that Hernandez was one of the editors of the Journal Étranger in which excerpts of Fanny Hill had been published in 1755. Further hard evidence has been traced by Hal Gladfelder, who publishes a letter sent by Cleland to his lawyer in 1757 asking him to obtain "some papers relating to" the East Indies, as a "Mr. Grose of Richmond" has "appl[ied] to me for some materials towards a treatise" on the subject (Fanny Hill in Bombay: The Making and Unmaking of John Cleland, pp34-5). He also identifies a great deal of "material that echoes his preoccupations and experience": his etymological researches; his interest in the political effects of trade; "the extended accounts of Mogul seraglios and the dancing girls of Surat [which] are akin to passages in the Coxcomb and the Dictionary of Love" (p35); together with a somewhat malicious story relating to a sea captain, William Boag, with whom Cleland had tangled previously, which could have no other source. Represents Cleland's only writing on his time in India. An interesting edition of an important text with typically tangled eighteenth-century origins.
