Ockley, Simon
Cambridge, for Anne Ockley by permission of Henry Lintot, 1757. 8vo. 2 vols. (4), XXI, (29), 80, 339, (21) pp. (4), LVIII, 325, (3), (327)-356, (12) pp. With a folding engr. plate. Contemp. calf; modern spines with giltstamped labels. All edges red. Third edition of this classic and influential work, first published in 1708. Ockley (1678-1720) was Professor of Arabic at the University of Cambridge. "The importance of Ockley's work in relation to the progress of oriental studies cannot be overestimated [...] Ockley for the first time made the history of the early Saracen conquests attractive to the general reader, and stimulated the student to further research. [The 'History'] became a secondary classic, and formed for generations the main source of the average notions of early Mohammedan history" (DNB XLI, 364). The plate shows the Kaaba at Mecca, engraved after a drawing preserved in a manuscript in the Bodleian Library in Oxford. The manuscript, which formed the basis of Ockley's work, is now known as the ?Futûh esh-Sham by pseudo-Waqidi. - Browned and brownstained throughout. From the library of the British philosopher of religion, David Arthur Pailin (b. 1936), with his bookplate; also with engr. bookplate of Robert Fellowes (of Shotesham/Shottesham, Norfolk, d. 1869?). - BM 174, p. 334. Gay 98. Graesse V, 7. OCLC 6595742. Cf. NYPL Arabia coll. 33 (1st and later editions).

(With an engraved frontispiece by S. Fokke, after A. Schouwman and a folding portrait of Willem Muilman after H.J. Serin. The First Stadholder Bindery in The Hague was the largest and most important binding workshop in existence in The Netherlands in the eighteenth century. It accepted every kind of work and made the most beautiful designs known in its time in the whole country. It owned an enormous quantity of tools, and kept traditional methods. The bindery maintained contacts with publishers in and beyond The Hague and worked for many collectors, some of them important and influential. Apart from presentation bindings and bindings for collectors it also made bindings which can be considered luxury publishers' or booksellers' bindings. The gilding used on both bindings is very diverse, in the middle of the covers a central ornament with at the top and bottom a triple acorn, surrounded by a double ornamental/geometrical border, from which each inner and outer corner with a triple acorn, altogether within a broad ornamental border which is almost touching the gilt boardedges. ZOCCHI GIUSEPPE.
Firenze, Bouchard, 1757. Album in-folio grande; titolo in rame e 50 tavole incise. "The principal etchers of the Vedute delle ville were Giuseppe Benedetti, Pietro Monaco, Filippo Morghen and Joseph Wagner. [?] Among the better-known contributors to the series were the Venetians Michele Marieschi (1696.1743), who in 1741 published his own series of views of Venice, and Giovanni Battista Piranesi (1720-1778) [?] The 'Ville' print series is an architectural history of these buildings, defining the representation and self-fashioning of a building type. In contrast with the villas of the Veneto, it is astonishing how few of the elements of … [Click Below for Full Description]

Cordier, Sinica, col. 2098; Löwendahl 558; Pritzel 6865. First edition of Johann Reinhold Forster's English translation of Osbeck's Dagbok öfwer en Ostindisk resa, first published in Sweden in 1757. Osbeck's narrative includes observations on China's languages and customs, but is particularly rich in detail about its natural history. Toreen's account of his voyage to India and China, in the form of letters, is followed by Eckeberg's Short account of the Chinese husbandry, and a catalogue of Chinese animals and plants with their Linnaean nomenclature. The fine plates primarily depict plants. Neatly re-backed with the original spine laid down. Very good set.

GREEN, George Smith.
Printed for Francis Noble and John Noble. [1757?] - viii, 195, [1]pp ad. leaf; vii, (i) ad., 170pp, ad. leaf; 8vo. A near fine copy bound in contemp. calf, gilt ruled borders, raised & gilt banded spines, orig. red gilt labels; small expert repairs to heads of spines. Rare, ESTC T57440 records BL and Southampton in UK, and 5 copies in America (Beinecke, UCLA, Boston, Oberlin, Pennsylvania). Raven 411 (who dates this as 1757, though other sources suggest 1745-1750). Very little is known about George Smith Green, died 1762, who in two of his other works, The Parson's Parlour [1756], and The Images of the Antients [1758], describes himself as a 'tradesman of Oxford' He published 3 poems, 2 plays, and this, by far his most substantial, and possibly partially autobiographical, work. It describes a young tradesman, a cheesemonger, who 'as he mightily loved plays . engaged with a Company of young Gentlemen, that used to perform once a month for the entertainment of their friends .' (and) 'meeting with the Books of Ben the Bricklayer (Ben Jonson), he found that Kings and Queens, and some other Folks, as good as Cheesmongers, had done the same a hundred years before' It is a lively romp through life, and with its liberal use of dashes, italics, and false names (Mrs and Miss Beastly, Mr Bigbelly, Mrs Strong, Counsellor Somebody, Mrs Swallow, Dr Bentivoglia, a critic of Ale), brings to mind the work of Sterne, whose Tristram Shandy first started to appear two years later in 1759. In fact he appears to be trying to set a different style for his writin … [Click Below for Full Description]

Charlestown, [Mass.]: May, 1757. 1 p., partially printed and accomplished, docketed on verso. 1 vols. Folio. FAMILY FARM FROM A 1663 LAND GRANT. In 1663, Francis Norton and Nicholas Davison were granted 500 acres by Charlestown for various services rendered to the town. Norton was a haberdasher and successful merchant, who made most of his money in the fur and fish trades, in which his neighbor, Nicholas Davison was a frequent partner and collaborator. Their widows were deeded the land after their deaths. This indenture between Abigail Waters of Charlestown, to her son, Benjamin Waters, of Salem, for the sale of her land in Worcester, for the sum of five pounds is the land from Norton and Davison's original grant. Reading in part: "Containing in the whole about 500 acres and was given by the Town of Charlestown aforesaid to the Widows Norton and Davison which widow Norton gave her half of said land to her daughter Abigail Stone my Mother deceased which farm is described in the Whole in a Grant made by the Great General Court of the province of the Massachusetts Bay..." The document is signed by Abigail Waters with her mark and is also signed by John Chandler, Register of Deeds for Worcester. Abigail (Stone) Waters (1693 - After 1759) was the daughter of Elias Stone and Abigail Long. She married Benjamin Waters on October 18, 1717 and had five children. Thaddeus Mason (1706-1802), was the son of John and Elizabeth (Spring) Mason, of Lexington, Mass. He graduated at Harvard College in 1728, and was the private secretary of Gov. Belcher, whose son, Jonathan, was his classmate. … [Click Below for Full Description]
