Pringle Giovanni (John)
[Click Below for Full Description]

GIBBONS (Thomas):
London: Printed by J. and W. Oliver...and Sold by James Buckland and John Payne..., 1757, 1757. FIRST EDITION. 8vo, pp. [xvi], 478, engraved frontispiece by Grignion after Thornhill of Paul preaching at Athens, contemporary calf, morocco label; lacks final adverts leaf, rear joint cracked, front cover detached, top and base of spine chipped, corners worn. Gibbons (1720 - 1785) wrote the most substantial work on rhetoric, in so far as it is concerned with style and expression, published in the 18th century. Other rhetoricians, such as John Ward and John Holmes (specifically his The Art of Rhetoric Made Easy [1755]) were concerned with rhetoric as a counterpart of logic. The first part of his treatise discusses and analyses metaphor, allegory, metonymy, synecdoche, irony, hyperbole and catachresis, while the second part is with formal inductions and responses in the development of an argument, a drama, or a narrative.

Impr. des Quatre-Saisons, 1757. Vera curiosità editoriale questo volume in 8° legato in cartonato rustico, sguardie, occhiello, frontespizio stampato in quattro colori, bella marca incisa in rame, motto anch'esso quadricromico "Ridendo dicere verum quid vetat?" posto intorno all'incisione, XXIV, 110 pp., bianca finale.

REIMARUS, Johann Albert Heinrich
Leiden, C. Wishoff, 1757. 4to. 4 Bl., 52 S., 1 Bl. Halbpergament d. Zeit (berieben u. verblaßt, Kanten bestoßen). Erste Ausgabe. [Click Below for Full Description]

published for The Author, London, 1757. Large Folio (546 x 368 mm), 46 etched and engraved plates on 47 sheets (plate 3 in two sections, 10 folding) by P. Fourdrinier and T. Major after Giovanni Battista Borra, light toning and foxing to scattered plates, very good copy in general. A TALL COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION OF THIS IMPORTANT ARCHITECTURAL SOURCE. "With the Ruins of Balbec following Palmyra in 1757, Britain was firmly placed in the forefront of archaeological studies" (Harris British Architectural Books and Writers 936). Blackmer 1835. FIRST EDITION of a magnificent work published to wide acclaim and influential on contemporary British Buildings. Wood, accompanied by James Dawkins, John Bouverie and the Italian artist and architect Giovanni Battista Borra, travelled extensively in the Levant, reaching the relatively not visited sites of Palmyra and Balbec in 1751. He published The Ruins of Palmyra in 1753, and The Ruins of Balbec four years later. Robert Wood was a British traveller, classical scholar, civil servant and politician. In 1750-1751 Wood travelled around the Levant with two wealthy young Oxford scholars James Dawkins and John Bouverie (who died of a fever early in their expedition) and an Italian draftsman Giovanni Battista Borra. Their primary goal was to explore the Troad and locate the key sites mentioned by Homer. Moving south into Syria, they then took careful measurements and drawings of the ancient Roman ruins of Palmyra and Baalbek. The results of these were published in 1753 and 1757 in both English and French editions and were among the first sys … [Click Below for Full Description]

ZOCCHI, Giuseppe.
Giuseppe Bouchard Florence, 1757. Landscape folio (390 x 58 cm). Etched title and 50 etched plates of the villas of Tuscany after Zocchi by Piranesi and other, mostly Italian, engravers; occasional very minor soiling. Contemporary mottled calf, spine gilt, red morocco label; neat repairs to joints and edges. Complete set of the finest pictorial record of Tuscany in the XVIII century - a fine example. Zocchi (1711-67), a painter, draftsman, and etcher, was the protege of Gerini, who commissioned these prints and also paid for Zocchi's artistic education in Rome, Bologna, and Lombardy. Although he made easel and mural paintings, Zocchi's oeuvre is richest in drawings and prints. The third (second Bouchard) edition. The first was published in 1744 and a second (Bouchard's first) in 1754. The fine plates show Tuscan villas set in gardens and the surrounding bucolic landscape. The scenes are enlivened by human and animal activity, often of a humorous nature: a man fights to control his cloak whilst his hat is whisked away by a Tuscan hill-top wind. To the more discerning viewer, the work is a powerful example of political art with the engravings carrying pro-Tuscan, and specifically pro-Florentine, messages. After the death of Grand Duke Gian Castone in 1737, the duchy devolved to a regency under imperial command, which caused tensions with the local nobility. These views provide a stocktaking of Tuscan villas during this period alongside efforts to balance the differing aims of the Imperial court, the resident government, and the local owners. Thus bridges illustrate the good t … [Click Below for Full Description]

AUCTION CATALOGUE: [GIRARDOT DE PRÉFOND, Paul])
Par Guillaume-Franç. De Bure, le jeune. 3 p.l., lv, [1], 241 pp. 8vo, cont. mottled calf (head of spine a little worn), triple gilt fillet round sides, spine gilt, red morocco lettering piece on spine. Paris: G.F. De Bure, 1757. One of the choicest and most celebrated collections formed in France during the 18th century, this copy has been priced throughout in a contemporary hand. Girardot, a timber merchant, on his retirement from business, became depressed. As Bogeng relates, his doctor, Hyacinthe Baron, himself an important collector, advised him to cure his melancholia by forming a library. The result is recorded in De Bure's excellently compiled catalogue. Many of the books and MSS. in the collection were bound by Padeloup in the most luxurious fashion. 1428 lots with nine scientific instruments also sold at the end. One of the principal buyers was the Duc de La Vallière. Immediately upon having sold this collection, Girardot embarked upon forming a second, which he sold in 1769 for 50,000 francs to Count Mac-Carthy, displaying both great taste and business acumen. Very attractive copy. ❧ Grolier Club, Printed Catalogues of French Book Auctions...1643-1830, 135.
Cfr. Einaudi, 1383. Goldsmiths, 9241; Kress 5597. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
