Gorrin - Typographia Radiciana, Chambery - Venezia, 1757. Due opere in un tomo in-4 (220x150 mm.), pp. 119, (1), (prima opera); pp. 102 (seconda opera). Fregi xilogr. ai front. Legat.mezza pelle. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

JAILLOT (Jean-Baptiste-Michel Renou de Chevigné, dit);
COLLINS, Captain Greenville (d. 1694).
[Paris: Jacques Bellin, 1757] Folio (53 x 36 cm.): letterpress title page containing list of contents, 19 engraved charts, all but one double-page. BINDING/CONDITION: Bound in contemporary marbled paper wrappers; spine worn, one chart with marginal chip. FRENCH EDITION OF COLLINS' LANDMARK PILOT CHARTS, FIRST PUBLISHED IN 1693. Captain Greenville Collins was an officer in the Royal Navy and ‘Hydrographer to the King'. Early in his career he participated in an expedition with Sir John Narborough (ca. 1640-1688) to the coasts of South America. He took charge of the frigate Charles between 1676 and 1679 and was afterwards promoted to Commander. In 1681 Samuel Pepys, Secretary of the Admiralty, appointed Captain Collins to survey the coasts of the British Isles and supplant the outdated Dutch navigation charts that were still in use. This was the first such survey undertaken of the British coast and it proved a lengthy and expensive exercise which lasted some seven-eight years. After its completion some of London's leading engravers--including J. Harris, F. Lamb and Js. Clark, James Moxon and Herman Moll--were employed to engrave the plates, and in 1693 Great Britain's Coasting Pilot was finally published. According to Tooley, "This work forms a landmark in the charting of Great Britain, being far in advance of any previous effort in this field. It is the first complete Pilot Book in English of the whole of the coasts of Great Britain, including Orkney, Shetland and Scilly Islands, in some ways the equivalent of marine maps of Saxton's land maps." Having spent eight years recording artefacts and buildings, including the the extensive remains of sepulchres, he published this collection of of over two hundred plates. About half of the items he recorded are now lost. According to Piranesi himself only seventy copies of the first issue had been printed before he lost patience with his patron Viscount Charlemont's failure to send funds promised to underwrite the costs of publication. He removed the dedications to each volume, expunged Charlemont's name from the text and added the text of two letters he send to the viscount demanding the promised funds (dated February 1757). … [Click Below for Full Description]

Everard, John.
London printed in the Year , And Now Reprinted in Germantown, by Christopher Sower: 1757. Two volumes. pp. xi, 268; 280. 4to. 200 mm. Some age stain, but relatively clean and tight. Bound in non-uniform early bindings. Hardbound. Very Good. The first volume has a ** contemporary manuscript note, probably in Christopher Saur/Sower's hand: 'Note. This is but the first Part of John Everard's Sermons. the Second Part is yet under the Press, ye 24th 3rd Mo. 1757." John Everard (1575?-1650?) was an English divine, preacher, and mystic. He was educated at Clare College, Cambridge. Though a great scholar and philosopher, his younger days (as he confessed in the preface to Gospel Treasures Opened), were days of ignorance and vanity, when he walked as other gentiles and as men living without God in the world, and he became ashamed of his former knowledge, expressions, and preachings. A brave and popular preacher, he was in constant trouble and frequently imprisoned. Each time some lord or other begged his pardon of the King, and as often as Everard regained his liberty he again took up his attack on the unlawfulness of marching with idolaters. In 1636 Everard was charged before the high commission court with heresy, being accused indifferently of familism, antinomianism, and anabaptism. After being kept some months waiting for his trial he was dismissed, but was soon again prosecuted. Such of Everard's sermons as escaped confiscation by the persecuting bishops were first issued in 1653 under the title 'Some Gospel Treasures Opened' The volumes are dedicated to Oliver Cromwell, and be … [Click Below for Full Description]
