[MITCHELL, John (1711-1768)]
London: A. Millar, 1757. 8vo. [2], xlix, [1], [17]-244pp. Contemporary calf, spine with raised bands, ruled in gilt on either side of each band, red morocco lettering pieceProvenance: Earls of Glasgow (armorial bookplate)Very fine first edition of John Mitchell's textual companion to his famed French and Indian War map.John Mitchell, a respected British physician, botanist, chemist, biologist, and surveyor, lived for a time in Virginia, but returned to England in 1746, where he remained. The map was decidedly pro-English in its interpretation of the various boundaries and geographical information depicted on the map, as would be expected for what amounted to thinly eiled propaganda. In addition to the geographical detail shown on the map, Mitchell included many annotations describing the extent of British and French settlements. The present work, separatel … [Click Below for Full Description]

Venegas, Miguel (and Andres Marcos Burriel)
Madrid: Viuda de Manuel Fernandez, 1757. First edition. Hardcover. Fine. Three volumes. Small 4tos. (24),240; (8),564; (8),436. Four folding copperplate maps: Vol. 1 contains the Mapa de la California, y su Costa Oriental Nuevamente Descubierta, based on Padre Kino's revolutionary map. Vol. 3 contains three maps: Seno de California; Carta de la Mar del Sur; and Mapa de la America Septentl. etc. Full limp vellum, early but probably not contemporary; green leather lettering labels, gilt. Vellum lightly soiled and rubbed, labels chipped, old mend to verso of the map in Volume 1 and to the tittle page of Volume 3, occasional light foxing. But overall a lovely set. In Spanish. The first two volumes were taken from the manuscript of Padre Venegas written between 1734 and 1739. It went unpublished because the Spanish Crown did not want details of New Spain disseminated. But eventually another Jesuit, Padre Burriel, edited the manuscript and added a third volume bringing the work up to date. The large map in volume 1 based on Kino's 1702 map includes ten captioned vignettes depicting local natives and wildlife, and also the martyrdoms of Frs. Carranco and Tamaral. It is indeed revolutionary as was the first attempt to end the notion that California was an island. Padre Consag's map, Seno de California, finished the job and is based on his own findings in a 1746 expedition to the mouth of the Colorado. This is the first printing of that map, considered foundational to the cartographic history of the Southwest. It is indeed revolutionary as it was the first attempt to end the notion that California was an island. Padre Consag's map, Seno de California, finished the job and is based on his own findings in a 1746 expedition to the mouth of the Colorado. This is the first printing of that map, considered foundational to the cartographic history of the Southwest. As Tooley notes (p. 111), Kino's map was not generally accepted; it was not until Consag confirmed Kin … [Click Below for Full Description]

Lind, James, M.D.
Printed for A. Millar., London, 1757. Second edition. corrected with additions and improvements. 8vo. xvi, (iii), (i) blank,476 pp.[light toning soiling] Contemporary Calf, rebacked, corners worn. 'Lind, founder of naval hygiene in England, wrote a classic treatise on scurvy, in which he described many important experiments he made on the disease. These experiments have been called "the first deliberately planned controlled therapeutic trial ever undertaken". Lind fought for the establishment of hospital ships, cleanliness and ventilation in sick bays, and other measures for which he has been called the "father of nautical hygiene"'. Serving as naval surgeon on the H.M.S. Salisbury in 1747, Lind performed what was probably the first deliberately planned controlled therapeutic trial ever undertaken. Lind isolated a dozen sailors suffering from the disease and over a fortnight gave to each pair of men one of six suggested treatments for the disease on a controlled regimen. Of the treatmens tried, the oranges and lemons proved the most efficacious. The account of this famous experiment is among the many important experiments on the disease described in this work by the founder of naval hygiene in England. It also gives an excellent critical summary on previous literature on the disease. "Lind showed that in preserved form citrus juices could be carried for long periods on board ship, and that, if administered properly, they would prevent the disease. The application of this knowledge by naval surgeons who followed Lind led to the eventual elimination of the disease from the Br … [Click Below for Full Description]

Voltaire
les Frères Cramer, 1757. This is the complete set, stated as such at the end of volume 17, of the stated First Edition, published by les frères Cramer in 1757, of the "Collection Complette des Oeuvres de M. de Voltaire" (382, 418, 328, 400, 351, 396, 446, 428, 403, 468, 399, 380, 391, 328, 335, 308 & 320 pages). These are bound in full tortoiseshell leather covers, which have extensive giltwork on the spines, all of which are securely attached, with no looseness to any front or back boards. The titles and volume numbers, gilt in red backgrounds, have some fade, but they are legible. There is minor edge wear and there are occasional scuffs, but no prominent stains or notable tears. The pages have a number of flaws, but are in very good condition overall. Several end pages have foxing and/or other stains, and there is some sunning to text pages. Most have none. The marbled page edges are uniformly clean and unfaded, as are the marbled inside cover spreads. There are no stamps or other attachments, there or elsewhere. The text is clean and unfaded throughout the set, with all lettering, and the occasional engravings and drawings, clearly legible. There are few tears, none of which are substantial. There are occasional corner creases, but, again, most pages have none. The frontispiece portrait of Voltaire, in Volume I, is in very good condition (see photo). International shipping would be by priority express insured mail, with a shipping charge of $100.00. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

MEER JR., NOACH VAN DER (1741-1822)
GEZICHT OP DE WATERKANT TE PARAMARIBO ?Vue Perspective de Paramaribo?, kopergravure vervaardigd door Noach van der Meer jr. voor ?Histoire Generale des Voyages? van L?Abbe Prevost uitgegeven in 1757. Later met de hand gekleurd. Afm. 22,5 x 32,5 cm. [Click Below for Full Description]

Edinburgh: Printed by R. Fleming, for A. Kincaid and A. Donaldson, Yair and Fleming, and W. Gray, 1757. 5 volumes, duodecimo in sixes (165 x 94 mm). Contemporary calf, dark tawny-coloured labels. Engraved armorial bookplates (by the fashionable Pugh Brothers, Lincoln's Inn) of Marquess of Headfort, most likely Thomas Taylor, 3rd marquess (1822-1894, succeeded to title 1870). Head of spine chipped on volume I, extremities chipped on volume V, old dark stains on back cover of volume I, touch of worming at foot of front joint on volume V (which has not progressed internally). An excellent set, clean, crisp and sound. First small format edition in English, following the two-volume folio of 1728 and originally published in French in 1726. Commissioned by the Order themselves, Vertot's history remained the standard work for two centuries. The Abbé's "talent as an historian was more of a literary than of a critical character" (Catholic Encyclopaedia), which perhaps was fitting for the telling of a tale of such legendary scope and scale. The Order was founded in Jerusalem after the reconquest in 1099; forced from the Holy Land after the fall of Acre in 1291, they settled briefly on Cyprus before being gifted lands on Rhodes. They were expelled from there by Suleiman the Magnificent after a six month siege in 1522, and after a short sojourn on Sicily, the Order was granted the islands of Malta and Gozo by the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V. In 1565 the Order organized the heroic resistance to the Siege of Malta, the island losing over a third of its population while withstanding a bom … [Click Below for Full Description]
