HILL, Sir John (1716-1775)]
London: printed for T. Osborne, T. Trye, S. Crowder & Co., and H. Woodgate, 1757. Folio. (16 5/8 x 10 inches). Engraved emblematic frontispiece, 60 engraved plates, all finely hand-coloured by a contemporary hand, most plates unsigned but including work by C. Edwards & Darly, J.Hill, Boyce, Philips, B. Cole, Ed. Alton and others, after Edwards, J. Hill, Van Huysum and others. Early 19th century full dark green morocco, covers elaborately bordered in gilt, spine with raised bands in seven compartments, lettered in the second, the others with a repeat overall decoration in gilt, contemporary marbled endpapers, marbled edges (expert restoration at joints) An exceptional example of the first edition of this important 18th-century gardening book: with very fine contemporary hand-colouring. The work was issued in 60 weekly parts between August 1756 and October 1757, and was available with plates uncoloured or coloured. The present example is truly exceptional: it is among the best contemporary coloured examples that we have seen. The plates are coloured by an assured and highly-talented hand, using a strong palate, and show oxidisation of the pigments which is a reliable indicator of early colouring. The work, intended as a companion to the Compleat Body of Husbandry (London, 1756), was designed along very unusual lines for the period: each weekly part includes information on what should be done in the garden during the following week together with descriptions of the plants that should be at their peak at that time. In the introduction, the author's intentions are … [Click Below for Full Description]

Edinburgh: Printed for Rob. Bremner, the Assigney of Sig. Pasquali, and sold at his Music-Shop [c.1757/8]. Oblong folio (255 × 350 mm), pp. vii, [1], 28, with 15 pp. of engraved music interpolated throughout the letterpress text, which is largely printed on folded half-sheets; some staining, dust-soiling, and other marks, small section of title torn away, edges a little ragged, sometime strengthened with Japanese paper, small wormhole in lower margin towards the end; stitched in the original drab wrappers, pen trials and staining to front cover, lower cover sometime replaces with card; early inscription to title-page (‘Newport’). Rare first edition; others followed in London. ‘Having purchased the whole musical Effects of the Author after his Decease, this Work was found amongst them, ready for the Press, and is presented to the Public without any Alteration’ (publisher’s preface). According to Burney, Pasquali (c.1718–1757) came to London from Italy about 1743 ‘and from then on was extremely active in the three main British musical centres. He spent the period 1748–9 in Dublin, where he produced an oratorio, Noah, and a masque, The Temple of Peace. By 1750 he was back in London, returning to Dublin in 1751. From October 1752 onwards he lived in Edinburgh, where he led the orchestras at both the Canongate Theatre and the Musical Society, wrote and acted in a “whimsical Farce” entitled The Enraged Musician (based on Hogarth’s print), and composed, among other works, a Stabat mater which continued to be performed in Edinburgh after his death’ (New Grove). Berlin: Haude & Spener, 1757. 4to. (215x175mm). Pp. 217-402 of the 'Mémoires de l'Academie Royale des Sciences et Belles Lettres', vol. 11. The three Euler works are: pp. 217- 273 and 3 plates; pp. 247-315 an 1 plate; 616-361 an 1 plate. Back strip of old marbled paper. A fine copy. ¶ First edition of these three classic memoirs in which Euler established the principal formulas of hydrostatics and hydrodynamics (Eulerian flow). In his "Principia motus fluidorum" (written 1752 but not published until 1761) the general principles were outlined, but the theory was elaborated in its mathematical details from 1753 to 1755 and published simultaneously in these three memoirs from 1757."It (the system) comprises the continouity equation for liquids with constant density; the velocity-potential equation (usually called after Laplace); and the general Euler equations for the motion of an incompressible liquid, gas, etc. As has generally been the case in mathematical physics, the main innovations were in the application of partial differential equations to the problems. At the beginning of "Continuation des recherches" Euler emphasized that he had reduced the whole of the theory of liquids to two analytical equations..." (A.P. Youschkevitch in DSB). - Eneström: Euler Bibliography, E 225, E 226, E 227. - There are three other memoirs printed together with Euler's works: 1.

Decker, Matthew].
[No place or printer], 1757. 8vo. 2 vols. (2), 302 pp., final blank. (2), 392 pp. Contemporary calf, giltstamped double red label to prettily gilt spines. All edges red. First French edition. Matthew Decker (1679-1749) was born in Amsterdam but grew up in England and became a successful merchant, a director of the East India Company and a member of parliament. He wrote two important books on trade: "Serious considerations on the several high duties which the nation in general, as well as trade in particular, labors under, with a proposal for raising all the publick supplies by one single tax" (1743) and the present one, originally published in 1744 as "Essay on the causes of the decline of the foreign trade, consequently of the value of the lands in Britain, and on the means to restore both". The implication of Decker's title, namely that British foreign trade was declining, appears inaccurate, but his arguments were mainly meant to show the possibility of improvement of British trade. His chief proposal was to abolish import duties, and in his book he attempted to refute the objection that this would diminish the value of land. As McCulloch states, "few if any of the older works on commerce [.] have so many well-founded claims to attention [.] or embody so many enlightened, ingenious, and original views". Adam Smith owned a copy of this book: while his library catalogue attributes it to William Richardson, current research argues strongly in favour of Decker's authorship. This French translation is the work of J. P. de Gua de Malves, a mathematician also credited with othe … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Burke, Edmund, 1729-1797]
London: Printed for R. and J. Dodsley, in Pall-mall., MDCCLVII [1757]. FIRST EDITION. A pristine, complete copy of Burke's seminal treatise on aesthetics. Through its five parts and numerous query-like 'sections', Burke sets forth his theories on the Beautiful and the Sublime. Studying physiognomy, grace, proportion, obscurity, color, "the cries of animals," the senses, and much more besides, Burke attempts to make the subjective, objective and the mysterious, visible and comprehensible. In this, Burke's treatise forms an extension of Lockean epistemology, moving beyond Locke's treatment of perceived objects and Bildung to the emotional and moral effects of perception. Famously, Burke defined the Sublime as encompassing "whatever is fitted in any sort to excite the ideas of pain, and danger, that is to say, whatever is in any sort terrible, or is conversant about terrible objects, or operates in a manner analagous [sic.] to terror"--it is in these things, Burke writes, that one finds the "source of the sublime" (13). Burke's work had a profound effect on literary and visual Romanticism in the years following its publication. "A Philosophical Enquiry into the Origin of our Ideas of the Sublime and Beautiful shared the preoccupation of the time with the linkage between human psychology and cultural phenomena, in this instance aesthetic taste. It argued that the instinct for self-preservation was associated with apprehensions of pain and danger and thereby with a sense of the sublime. Instinctive sociability, by contrast, was associated with pleasure and a sense of beauty. On … [Click Below for Full Description]

Norden, Frederick Lewis
London: Lockyer, Davis and Charles Reymers, 1757. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine. This is a beautiful example of "Travels in Egypt and Nubia . Translated from the original published by command of his Majesty the King of Denmark and enlarged with observations from ancient and modern authors, that have written on the antiquities of Egypt, by Dr. Peter Templeman" Published in London in 1757 by Lockyer, Davis and Charles Reymers and written by Frederick Lewis Norden. In a modern burgundy binding. This is complete in 2 volumes and in very nice condition, though there is some foxing and discoloration to some of the earlier pages in Volume 1. I find very few of the plates with any discoloration or foxing, as shown in the many photos provided, however there is also some discoloration to the final 8 pages of the book, including 3 of the prints. All in all, this is a beautiful example of one of the First editions in English of an important early illustrated account of exploration in Egypt. Norden, a Captain in the Danish Navy, made a journey in 1737-1738 through Egypt as far south as Sudan at the request of King Christian VI of Denmark. "After touring Alexandria and Cairo he proceeded up the Nile as far as Derr in Nubia, one night unknowingly passing Richard Pococke travelling in the opposite direction. Norden then retraced his steps to Alexandria and re-embarked for Europe in May 1738. During his year in Egypt, Norden produced the first coherent maps of the country . He died in Paris in September 1742, but his friends organized his papers on Egypt and published them in tw … [Click Below for Full Description]
