Abhandlungen zur Naturgeschichte der Thiere und Pflanzen; welche ehemals der königl.

franz. Akad. der Wissenschaften vorgetragen worden; ... Aus dem Französischen übersetzet. Leipzig, Arkstee und Merkus, 1757-1758. 3 volumes. 4to. pp. xxvi, (40), 1100, with 1 engraved frontispiece, 3 printer's-marks and 137 (mostly folded) engraved plates. Contemporary half calf, richly floral gilt spines with 6 raised bands and gilt-lettered labels. Nissen 3128; cf. Pritzel 2341. Dealing mainly with the natural history of animals, only the second half of the third volume treats plants. The animal dissections were done by the famous French anatomist and physician Claude Perrault, who was the leader of the famous French anatomists, of which Cole (p. 395) said: "The Parisians laid the foundation of our knowledge of comparative anatomy". Perrault (1613-1688; working in the fields of zoology, medicine, and plant- & animal-physiology) was "an original and influential figure. Few of his predecessors described so many species in such detail, or with such clarity and precision ..." (D.S.B. X, pp. 519-521). The beautifully engraved frontispiece shows Louis XIV and his Chancellor Colbert visiting the French Academy of Sciences in 1671. Many of the very attractive plates show animals in front of a beautiful and detailed landscape with villages, rivers, etc. and were printed on strong paper. Pages 81 to 94 concern camels and describe the anatomy of 2 camels 'Anatomische Beschreibung zweier Kameele', the text is accompanied by three plates. The first plate is a dromedary and the second a camel, both in front of a lovely landscape, the third plate shows anatomical details of the animals. A good and clean copy.

A Prospect on the River Manyfold, at Wetton-Mill

Published by Smith, London 1757 - A stunning view of the River Manyfold, by Smith of Derby, one of the most celebrated English landscape painters. Towards the middle of the eighteenth century a trend developed amongst English artists and printmakers, which sought to visually record the natural beauties of England and Wales. Sparked by a sense of national confidence and patriotism, English printmakers began to publish topographical prints of the important sights in the British Isles. In addition to being a visual record of the countryside they were meant to encourage public recognition of the beauty and history of England. They were aimed at English and foreign tourists who desired a memento of their travels, or at those vicarious tourists who collected topographical prints instead of traveling. One of the earliest and most influential landscape artists to begin this trend was Thomas Smith who came to be known as "Smith of Derby". Smith traveled the north of England painting famous houses and beautiful views. He was one of the first artists to depict wild landscape scenes, which became immensely fashionable with the development of the "picturesque landscape" towards the end of the century. Smith's paintings not only captured the English countryside at the onset of the Industrial Revolution, but also recorded the activities of visiting tourists and local inhabitants. These works capture a period in England's history, which was forever changed by the wheels of progress. Before the mills and the factories came to dominate the landscape of northern England Smith depicted its wild beauty and breathtaking scenery. This lovely print comes from a suite of eight views of Derbyshire and Staffordshire, produced by Smith around 1743. The views were then engraved and offered for sale by subscription, along with letterpress explanations of the sites. This important suite represent the first appearance of precipes and cascades in English landscapes, and mark a pivotal point in the concept of the countryside as sublime. The set was republished twice, first by Smith in 1757 and later by Boydell in 1769. This print is from Smith's second edition. Wetton Mill in the distance was a river run mill for grinding corn. River Manyfold (now Manifold) appears well-named as it forms a large loop before the viewer. Wetton is in Staffordshire. Clayton The English Print 1688-1802 page 155-157, 299. Engraving with beautiful hand-colour. Printed on watermarked laid paper. In good condition with the exception of some staining in the margins. Two creases along bottom corners. Label on verso of sheet. Image size: 15 x 20 7/8 inches.

With Several Articles never before made Public. The whole translated from the original German manuscript, and illustrated with various representations of the exercise in sixteen copper - plates. The first 3 plates and plate XVI each have an inserted page of Explanation, that to plate XVI is erroneously numbered Plate IV and inserted wrongly opposite plate IV instead of at page 54, in addition most copies have the 3 leaves of explanation for plates I, II, and III inserted between pages 26 and 27, whereas ours are inserted correctly with those plates before the text of Part I, plate IV is misplaced after the first 3 plates and should be at page 26 / 27, at the beginning of Part II where it is described in Chapter I. Collated and complete. Pages vii, (1 - Contents), (8 - Explanations), 59, (1), bound in full old calf, modern calf reback, gilt lettered title to spine, original endpapers. Covers and corners slightly worn, 2 names on front endpaper, quite foxed on title, prelim pages and last few pages, foxing throughout, including some plates, mostly to margins, all text legible. Binding tight and firm. A good copy. This work is translated from a German manuscript, apparently a copy of Regulations issued by Frederick the Great some time after 1742. The regulations relate in Part I to Field - Duty for infantry, cavalry and artillery, in Part II to forming battalions, marching, passing a bridge, regiments in action, regulations for artillery when marching. The unknown editor states in his preface that in this work "many Articles of the Prussian Service are made public, which have hitherto been kept secret". MORE IMAGES ATTACHED TO THIS LISTING. This edition is also valuable for the long list of colonial subscribers, as well as the narrative of Isaac Morris, one of the members of the Wager's crew left in Patagonia, which was not included in the first edition.         The History of the Province of New-York, from the First Discovery to the Year 1732.

1757 - Expertly bound to style in half 18th century calf, over 18th century marble paper boards, spine simply gilt in six compartments, red morocco lettering piece. One of the very rare large paper issues of the first edition of the first history of New York. William Smith was a graduate of Yale, became a distinguished New York lawyer, and later justice of the province. He was involved in a number of major land litigation cases in colonial New York, and it is likely that because of this he and Holland would have become closely acquainted. A Loyalist during the Revolution, Smith moved to Canada upon its conclusion and there became a chief justice as well. This history covers the period up to 1736. An important early history of New York. Howes rates the large paper edition a "d." This is only the second large paper copy of the work we have encountered. Howes S703, "d" (for the large paper issue). Streeter Sale 871. Church 1023. Sabin 84566. (11 1/4 x 9 1/8 inches). xii,255pp. plus folding plate. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Travels, or Observations Relating to Several Parts of Barbary and the Levant. lllustrated with Cuts.

London: Printed for A. Millar and W. Sandby:, Second edition with great Improvements, 1757 - 4to, 2 parts in 1, xviii, [2], 513, [1]pp, 38 engraved plates, including 15 maps (9 folding0, and 22 woodcut illustrations (2 folding), as per list, two plates with minor neat repairs to verso, contemp. full calf with later neat reback with raised bands, lettered and gilt ruled spine, rubbed along some extremities. A VG+ generally clean copy. Thomas Shaw was Chaplain to the English factory at Algiers and used his clerical position as an occasion for several travels. The first edition of this work was published in 1738, and was criticized by a certain Dr. Richard Pocock, and in defence, Shaw wrote a supplement, the contents of which are interwoven in the present text. Shaw's aim was to restore the ancient geography of the regions he describes and to place the natural and civil history of such areas in a proper light. Shaw is well known in the field of botany for his catalogue of the rarer plants which he observed during his travels in Barbary, Egypt, and Arabia, a classification amounting to 632 species and including crude plates, all donated to and preserved by Oxford University under the name of Shawia. This is the last edition prepared by Shaw himself. "These Travels have been universally esteemed, not only for their accuracy and fidelity, but on account of the illustrations they contain of natural history, of the classic authors, and especially of the Scriptures" (Lowndes 2372-3); "For his time, his geological views are enlightened, while his conjectures on the subject of the pyramids have been fully confirmed by Belzoni and other investigators; his scrupulous fidelity was vindicated by James Bruce and by later African explorers." His studies of minerals substances enhanced the understanding of various metals and compounds, the results of his many experiments heating substances in a furnace were published in his Lithogeognosia of 1746, his detailed tables of results were invaluable to the development of mineral chemistry.
