A La Haye: Chez Henri Scheurleer, 1757. Fine. Chez Henri Scheurleer, A La Haye 1757, In-12 (9,5x16,5cm), (6) xvj (2) 312pp. et xij, 296pp. et xvj, 280pp., 3 tomes en 3 volumes reliés. - New edition, illustrated with 8 figures, including the famous Battles books; the other figures are just as curious. Binding half mottled brown sheepskin contemporary. Back smooth decorated with four finials, roulette tail and head. As Exhibit tan morocco, black wax piece volume number. Corners bumped. Volume number of rooms of volumes I and II rubbed. Good copy.

The principles of agriculture and vegetation

Edinburgh: printed for G. Hamilton & J. Balfour. 1757. 8vo., viii + 179 + (1)pp., in a very good mid-20th century binding of half calf over marbled boards, spine lettered in gilt by Sangorski and Sutcliffe> in London, uncut. A fine copy. First edition: second printing (a reissue of the sheets of the 1756 1st ed., with a new title-page). Rothamsted p.75 (where it calls this 1757 printing the 1st ed.). Goldsmiths 9219. Higgs 1391. Only later editions in Perkins. An important contribution to agricultural science which was described by Professor Launcelot Hogben (Science and the Citizen>) as a 'pioneer work that bore fruit in the lectures of Humphrey Davy'. An Edinburgh doctor and 'close friend of Dr. J. Black, professor of chemistry at Glasgow, Home set out to discover 'how far chemistry will go in settling the principles of agriculture', and carried out pot experiments to discover the best types of fertilizers, though his interest in chemistry was not confined to agriculture. He perceived that there were two ways of investigating plant chemistry - the one to find out what the plant contained; the other pot experiments, and he did valuable work, but with a wide margin of error. Sir John Russell, in Soil Conditions and Plant Growth,> says: 'The book is a great advance on anything that had gone before it, not only because it recognizes that plant nutrition depends on several factors, but because it indicates so clearly the two methods to be followed in studying the problem - pot cultures and plant analysis. The problem, indeed, was carried as far as was possible until further advances were made in plant physiology and chemistry.' Home made a very real contribution to agricultural science.' [G.E. Fussell, More old English farming books,> pp.36-7].

The history of the Saracens. Containing the lives of Abubeker, Omar, Othman, Ali, Hasan, Moawiyab I. [and 5 more], the immediate Successors of Mahomet. Including (with their own divisional titles): [Chappelow, Leonard]. An account . of the life of Mahomet, and: Occkley, Simon (trans). Sentences of Ali[,] son-in-law of Mahomet, .Third edition.

Cambridge, printed for Anne Ockley, by permission of Henry Lintot, 1757. - 2 volumes. 8vo. [2], XXI, [29], 80, 339, [21]; [4], LVIII, "356" [= 358], [12] pp. With folding engraved plate. Contemporary calf. Rebacked, using the original spine-labels and new brown endpapers. Third edition of Ockley's most famous work, presenting Islamic history from 632 to 705, based on Arabic sources. "One of the most important steps in the introduction of Arab culture to Europe was the decision to use Islamic sources in order to write a history of the Arabs. This step was taken by Simon Ockley. It is based mainly on a manuscript in Oxford [Bodleian Library] wrongly attributed to the historian of the eighth century, al-Waqidi, but in fact composed at the time of the Crusades. Ockley accepted al-Waqidi's authorship, but was also acquainted with other historians such as Ibn Duqmaq, Ibn Abd Rabbah, al-Suyuti and Abu al-Fida" (Hamilton). It was first published in one volume in 1708 as The conquest of Syria, Persia, and Aegypt by the Saracens, dealing with Islamic history under the first three caliphs. Ten years later Ockley published a continuation entitled The history of the Saracens, continuing the history from the fourth caliph to the Umayyad 'Abd al-Malik (656-705). The present edition, published for the benefit of Ockley's widow Anne, was augmented with a Life of Mahomet, sometimes ascribed to Roger Long, but most likely written by Leonard Chappelow. - With a 1914 bookplate on pastedown with the owner's monogram "HJK", the motto "semper fidelis" and an open book with "Poles 1913". In 1658 Pope Alexander granted the Polish city of Lwow (now Lviv in Ukraine) the use of the motto "semper fidelis" in recognition of their resistance to the spread of Islam. In 1913 the Akademische Verbindung Semper Fidelis in Luzern, Switzerland, celebrated the 50th anniversary of its foundation. So the unidentified (Polish?) HJK may have been associated with Lviv and/or that student society. Some minor browning and in 1 leaf a marginal tear, but still in good condition. The binding is rebacked as noted, but otherwise good. ESTC T134350; Gay, Bibl. de l'Afrique et l'Arabe 98; cf. Blackmer 1216 (1st ed.); Hamilton, Europe and the Arab world 37 (1st ed); for background information: Arberry, "The pioneer: Simon Ockley", in: Arberry (ed.) Oriental Essays (1997), pp. 11-47. Complete map, scarce. So komplett selten aufzufinden. Der Polnische Thronfolgekrieg (1733–1738), auch Polnischer Erbfolgekrieg genannt, war ein Krieg um die Thronfolge Polens nach dem Tod Augusts II. (des Starken) († 1. Februar 1733). The War of the Polish Succession (1733–1738) was a major European war for princes' possessions sparked by a Polish civil war over the succession to Augustus II, King of Poland that other European powers widened in pursuit of their own national interests. France and Spain, the two Bourbon powers, attempted to check the power of the Austrian Habsburgs in western Europe, as did the Kingdom of Prussia; whilst Saxony and Russia mobilized to support the eventual Polish victor. The slight amount of fighting in Poland resulted in the accession of Augustus III, who in addition to Russia and Saxony, was politically supported by the Habsburgs. The war's major military campaigns occurred outside Poland. The Bourbons, supported by Charles Emmanuel III of Sardinia, moved against isolated Habsburg territories. In the Rhineland France successfully took the Duchy of Lorraine, and in Italy Spain regained control over the kingdoms of Naples and Sicily (lost in the War of the Spanish Succession), while territorial gains in northern Italy were limited despite bloody campaigning. Great Britain's unwillingness to support Habsburg Austria demonstrated major cracks in the Anglo-Austrian Alliance and may have contributed to Austria's military failures. Although a preliminary peace was reached in 1735, the war was formally ended with the Treaty of Vienna (1738) in which Augustus III was confirmed as king of Poland and his opponent Stanis?aw Leszczy?ski (who had received virtually no foreign military support) was awarded the Duchy of Lorraine. Francis Stephen, the duke of Lorraine, was given the Grand Duchy of Tuscany in compensation for the loss of Lorraine. The Duchy of Parma went to Austria whereas Charles of Parma took the crowns of Naples and Sicily, resulting in territorial gains for the Bourbons. Poland also gave up claims to Livonia and direct control over the Duchy of Courland and Semigallia, which, although remaining a Polish fief, was not integrated into Poland proper, and came under strong Russian influence. Contemporary sprinkled calf, red morocco label, double gilt rules, small gilt centre ornaments to spine. Housed in a burgundy flat back cloth solander box. Ownership inscriptions on front free endpaper and pastedown: William Nasmith, London, 19 March 1757; indecipherable initials, dated 6 June 1867; Tet Htoot [Burmese historian] from R. C. Trevelyan [English poet and translator], Christmas 1941. A little neat restoration to spine ends, few stains to front cover, endleaves tanned at margin from turn-ins, but a very good copy. First edition, with the half-title and the dedication, the first word on p. 9 is "ative" instead of the corrected "lative"; the other typographical error on p. 131 is corrected to "lancing". Cancels C12 and D1 and the omission of K5-K8 agree with the description of Todd, p. 200. These essays were offered by Hume to his publisher in June 1755 for 50 guineas. For a full account of the publishing history, with the suppression of one essay, its initial replacement with two alternative ones, which were then in turn replaced by an entirely new one, see Jessop, pages 33-35.
