(With an engraved frontispiece by S. Fokke, after A. Schouwman and a folding portrait of Willem Muilman after H.J. Serin. The First Stadholder Bindery in The Hague was the largest and most important binding workshop in existence in The Netherlands in the eighteenth century. It accepted every kind of work and made the most beautiful designs known in its time in the whole country. It owned an enormous quantity of tools, and kept traditional methods. The bindery maintained contacts with publishers in and beyond The Hague and worked for many collectors, some of them important and influential. Apart from presentation bindings and bindings for collectors it also made bindings which can be considered luxury publishers' or booksellers' bindings. The gilding used on both bindings is very diverse, in the middle of the covers a central ornament with at the top and bottom a triple acorn, surrounded by a double ornamental/geometrical border, from which each inner and outer corner with a triple acorn, altogether within a broad ornamental border which is almost touching the gilt boardedges. The spines are decorated with floral gilding. Bound with rich chintz endpapers with a floral pattern with apples and pears in green, red and purple. All edges gilt-edged and near the spine and at the corners gauffred with a design of leaves.) Storm van Leeuwen, J. (2006). Dutch Decorated Bookbinding in the Eighteenth Century.         Recens Edita totius Novi Belgii.

Augsburg 1757 - Original wash color; fine condition. A superb example of a richly engraved map of the Northeast, which includes a fascinating view of New York City with a rarely seen depiction of the original wall that would become Wall Street. Called the Restitutio View for its dramatic depiction of the restitution of Dutch power in the New York City in 1673, it shows Dutch soldiers marching south along the city¿s east side on their way to seizing the fort. Dutch rule in New York lasted only a single year before the English took final control in 1674. (See Manhattan in Maps, reference below, for an account of this surprising event in New York history.) The wall that stood where Wall Street now runs was in fact a wooden stockade, built in 1653, when word reached New Amsterdam of a planned though later aborted, English attack of the city. Atop the view, a monarch, possibly George II, is being presented with the bounty of America. Published the T. C. Lotter, this was the final edition of the very long-lived Jansson-Visscher series of maps. The Jansson map, which served as the template of the general map in the series, was one of the most durable prototypes in the mapping of America. cf. Augustyn/ Cohen, Manhattan in Maps, pp. 46-7; Tooley, America, p. 291, #26a, fourth state.

Abhandlungen zur Naturgeschichte der Thiere und Pflanzen; welche ehemals der königl.

franz. Akad. der Wissenschaften vorgetragen worden; ... Aus dem Französischen übersetzet. Leipzig, Arkstee und Merkus, 1757-1758. 3 volumes. 4to. pp. xxvi, (40), 1100, with 1 engraved frontispiece, 3 printer's-marks and 137 (mostly folded) engraved plates. Contemporary half calf, richly floral gilt spines with 6 raised bands and gilt-lettered labels. Nissen 3128; cf. Pritzel 2341. Dealing mainly with the natural history of animals, only the second half of the third volume treats plants. The animal dissections were done by the famous French anatomist and physician Claude Perrault, who was the leader of the famous French anatomists, of which Cole (p. 395) said: "The Parisians laid the foundation of our knowledge of comparative anatomy". Perrault (1613-1688; working in the fields of zoology, medicine, and plant- & animal-physiology) was "an original and influential figure. Few of his predecessors described so many species in such detail, or with such clarity and precision ..." (D.S.B. X, pp. 519-521). The beautifully engraved frontispiece shows Louis XIV and his Chancellor Colbert visiting the French Academy of Sciences in 1671. Many of the very attractive plates show animals in front of a beautiful and detailed landscape with villages, rivers, etc. and were printed on strong paper. Pages 81 to 94 concern camels and describe the anatomy of 2 camels 'Anatomische Beschreibung zweier Kameele', the text is accompanied by three plates. The first plate is a dromedary and the second a camel, both in front of a lovely landscape, the third plate shows anatomical details of the animals. A good and clean copy.

A Prospect on the River Manyfold, at Wetton-Mill

Published by Smith, London 1757 - A stunning view of the River Manyfold, by Smith of Derby, one of the most celebrated English landscape painters. Towards the middle of the eighteenth century a trend developed amongst English artists and printmakers, which sought to visually record the natural beauties of England and Wales. Sparked by a sense of national confidence and patriotism, English printmakers began to publish topographical prints of the important sights in the British Isles. In addition to being a visual record of the countryside they were meant to encourage public recognition of the beauty and history of England. They were aimed at English and foreign tourists who desired a memento of their travels, or at those vicarious tourists who collected topographical prints instead of traveling. One of the earliest and most influential landscape artists to begin this trend was Thomas Smith who came to be known as "Smith of Derby". Smith traveled the north of England painting famous houses and beautiful views. He was one of the first artists to depict wild landscape scenes, which became immensely fashionable with the development of the "picturesque landscape" towards the end of the century. Smith's paintings not only captured the English countryside at the onset of the Industrial Revolution, but also recorded the activities of visiting tourists and local inhabitants. These works capture a period in England's history, which was forever changed by the wheels of progress. Before the mills and the factories came to dominate the landscape of northern England Smith depicted its wild beauty and breathtaking scenery. This lovely print comes from a suite of eight views of Derbyshire and Staffordshire, produced by Smith around 1743. The views were then engraved and offered for sale by subscription, along with letterpress explanations of the sites. This important suite represent the first appearance of precipes and cascades in English landscapes, and mark a pivotal point in the concept of the countryside as sublime. The set was republished twice, first by Smith in 1757 and later by Boydell in 1769. This print is from Smith's second edition. Wetton Mill in the distance was a river run mill for grinding corn. River Manyfold (now Manifold) appears well-named as it forms a large loop before the viewer. Wetton is in Staffordshire. Clayton The English Print 1688-1802 page 155-157, 299. Engraving with beautiful hand-colour. Printed on watermarked laid paper. In good condition with the exception of some staining in the margins. Two creases along bottom corners. Label on verso of sheet. Image size: 15 x 20 7/8 inches.

NEW REGULATIONS FOR THE PRUSSIAN INFANTRY:

London, J. Rivington and J. Fletcher; A. Linde; and Thomas Pote, 1757.containing an exact detail of the present field - service: and Particularly the most essential and recent Parts of the Foot - Exercise. With Several Articles never before made Public. The whole translated from the original German manuscript, and illustrated with various representations of the exercise in sixteen copper - plates. FIRST EDITION, 1757. Small 4to, approximately 225 x 170 mm, 8¾ x 6¾ inches, engraved encampment headpiece to dedication to Duke of Marlborough, 16 engraved plates on 15 folding sheets, (plates V & VI on 1 sheet), the number has been omitted by the printer from plate VI. The first 3 plates and plate XVI each have an inserted page of Explanation, that to plate XVI is erroneously numbered Plate IV and inserted wrongly opposite plate IV instead of at page 54, in addition most copies have the 3 leaves of explanation for plates I, II, and III inserted between pages 26 and 27, whereas ours are inserted correctly with those plates before the text of Part I, plate IV is misplaced after the first 3 plates and should be at page 26 / 27, at the beginning of Part II where it is described in Chapter I. Collated and complete. Pages vii, (1 - Contents), (8 - Explanations), 59, (1), bound in full old calf, modern calf reback, gilt lettered title to spine, original endpapers. Covers and corners slightly worn, 2 names on front endpaper, quite foxed on title, prelim pages and last few pages, foxing throughout, including some plates, mostly to margins, all text legible. Binding tight and firm. A good copy. This work is translated from a German manuscript, apparently a copy of Regulations issued by Frederick the Great some time after 1742. The regulations relate in Part I to Field - Duty for infantry, cavalry and artillery, in Part II to forming battalions, marching, passing a bridge, regiments in action, regulations for artillery when marching. The unknown editor states in his preface that in this work "many Articles of the Prussian Service are made public, which have hitherto been kept secret". MORE IMAGES ATTACHED TO THIS LISTING.         Memoirs of Wool, Woolen Manufacture, and Trade, (Particularly in England) From the Earliest to the Present Times; With Occasional Notes, Dissertations, and Reflections. The Second Edition, Revised and Enlarged.

London: Printed for the Author. 1756 1757 - 2 volumes. 4to, pp. xxxi xxxii Errata, xxxiii -xxxvi Subscribers, xxxvi blank], 432; 449 [450 blank], contemporary mottled calf, spines gilt in compartments, morocco labels; upper front joint volume 1 cracked, binding rubbed and dried. Smith published the first edition of this work in 1747 as Chronicon Rusticum-Commercial, or memoirs of Wool, but this revised edition is a more substantial and useful work. Arthur Young, in his Annals of Agriculture claimed that its accuracy was so reliable that "scarcely any measure relative to that commodity [wool] can be stated which has not been fully explained and considered on the most liberal and enlightened principles; not deduced from vague theories, but from the clear page of ample experience." McCulloch in his Literature of Political Economy (1845) called it "one of the most carefully complied and valuable works" of its kind. Smith's topic was a timely one, as wool was one of the chief marketable commodities produced in England in the 18th century; at the time of its writing, nearly a million people in England were depended in one way or other on the production of wool. The work was republished again in 1765. Adam Smith, in the Wealth of Nations, described the author as "very accurate and intelligent" (IV, viii, 25). [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        SARCOTIS. CARMEN

Apud J. Barbou [second part: Londres, et se vend à Paris, Chez J. Barbou], Coloniæ Agrippinæ, et venit Parisiis 1757 - Central to a Curious and Sensational Literary Fraud Threatening Milton's Integrity. 152 x 89 mm (6 x 3 1/2"). 1 p.l., 108 pp.; 2 p.l., 192 pp., [2] leaves. Two parts in one volume. First Separate Printing. Contemporary mottled calf, blind-ruled borders, flat spine with gilt compartments featuring foliate thistle centerpiece, morocco label, marbled endpapers. Woodcut illustrated title page, headpieces, and tailpieces. Graesse IV, 436; Brunet III, 1515. Joints a bit flaked, tail of front joint with quarter-inch crack, leather just slightly crackled and a bit soiled, but an excellent copy, the rather pretty binding sturdy and still bright, and THE TEXT BOTH IMMACULATE AND EXTRAORDINARILY FRESH. Involving the Belgian poet and philologist Masen (1606-81), the English teacher and scholar William Lauder (d. 1771), and, most importantly, Milton's reputation and integrity, this is the first separate printing of a work of central importance in one of the most bizarre stories in the annals of literary fraud. Lauder's entire adult life seemed dominated by bitterness and animosity: he was the victim of a freakish golfing accident, which led to the amputation of a leg; then he experienced a series of professional disappointments, both in seeking positions and in his attempts to promote the sale of literary materials for use in the schools. In this latter category, one of his setbacks had a tangential connection with the reputation of Milton, and in 1747, to the amazement of the learned world, he published in the "Gentleman's Magazine" a kind of twisted revenge in the form of an article claiming that "Paradise Lost" was largely plagiarized from "Sarcotis," the present Latin poem by Masen (or Masenius). There followed elaborating articles, indignant rejoinders from Milton's defenders, and a book-length consolidation of the "Gentleman's Magazine" pieces in which Lauder claimed that Milton borrowed from no fewer than 18 contemporaneous writers of Latin verse. Eventually, Lauder published another book on the subject, this one purportedly containing actual excerpts from the works Milton was said to have plagiarized. It was a work Warburton described as "the most silly and knavish book [he] ever saw," and it wasn't long before an aroused public discovered that the suspect passages had all been maliciously put into the works in question by Lauder himself. Though Lauder tried desperately to retrieve his lost reputation, there was no hope, and he eventually emigrated to Barbados, where he died in poverty after failing with a grammar school and then a huckster's shop. "Sarcotis" first appeared in print in 1664 as part of a larger work entitled "Palaestra Eloquentiae Ligatae," printed in three parts in Cologne from 1654-83, and it was in this publication that Lauder discovered the poem. Once the Lauder controversy exploded, there was suddenly a demand for "Sarcotis" to be reprinted. The present volume contains the poem in the original Latin, and in a second, separately paginated, part, it contains a French translation of the work and a 64-page account entitled "Observations sur le 'Paradis Perdu' de Milton & sur la 'Sarcothee' de Masenius," which seems to have been extracted from a periodical publication printed in 1754. This is an extremely rare book, NUC locating only four copies. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
