A Prospect of the Rocks & that Salt Cavern at Castleton call'd Peak-hole, alias the D-l's A-fe

Published by Thomas Smith, London 1757 - A stunning view of the Salt Cavern at Castleton, by Smith of Derby, one of the most celebrated English landscape painters. Towards the middle of the eighteenth century a trend developed amongst English artists and printmakers, which sought to visually record the natural beauties of England and Wales. Sparked by a sense of national confidence and patriotism, English printmakers began to publish topographical prints of the important sights in the British Isles. In addition to being a visual record of the countryside they were meant to encourage public recognition of the beauty and history of England. They were aimed at English and foreign tourists who desired a memento of their travels, or at those vicarious tourists who collected topographical prints instead of traveling. One of the earliest and most influential landscape artists to begin this trend was Thomas Smith who came to be known as "Smith of Derby". Smith traveled the north of England painting famous houses and beautiful views. He was one of the first artists to depict wild landscape scenes, which became immensely fashionable with the development of the "picturesque landscape" towards the end of the century. Smith's paintings not only captured the English countryside at the onset of the Industrial Revolution, but also recorded the activities of visiting tourists and local inhabitants. These works capture a period in England's history, which was forever changed by the wheels of progress. Before the mills and the factories came to dominate the landscape of northern England Smith depicted its wild beauty and breathtaking scenery. This beautiful set is a wonderful example of Smith's superior work. This lovely print comes from a suite of eight views of Derbyshire and Staffordshire, produced by Smith around 1743. The views were then engraved and offered for sale by subscription, along with letterpress explanations of the sites. This important suite represent the first appearance of precipes and cascades in English landscapes, and mark a pivotal point in the concept of the countryside as sublime. The set was republished twice, first by Smith in 1757 and later by Boydell in 1769. In this view of one of the caverns near Castleton, generally known now and spelled out: "Devil's Arse", Smith explores another of the fascinating natural wonders of Derbyshire. Clayton The English Print 1688-1802 page 155-157, 299. Engraving with beautiful hand-colour. Printed on watermarked laid paper. In good condition with the exception of some staining on the right margin and across the top edge of sheet outside of platemark. Label on verso of sheet. Image size: 15 1/8 x 20 3/4 inches.

        Mes Rêveries

Amsterdam and Leipzig, Arkstrée et Merkus; Paris, Desaint and Saillant, Durand, , 1757. Ouvrage Posthume... 2 volumes, quarto (280 × 210 mm). Contemporary sprinkled calf, raised bands, spine gilt in compartments with floral and foliate tools, red morocco title piece, green stained and gilt "numbering piece", gilt barred edge-roll, green silk page-markers, edges sprinkled in red. 84 plates, 37 of them folding, 4 of them coloured, wood-engraved head- and tailpieces. Some light browning, one plate slightly misfolded and standing proud at the fore-edge, some light shelf-wear, corners a little soft, head- and tailcaps scuffed, but overall a very good set. First edition thus. "De Saxe's work is a comprehensive treatise on war. He puts forward his ideal military model, his "legion", and taking issue with the views and practices of his age, he advances many original ideas. However, rather than discussing his military doctrines, the aim of this book is to elucidate the intellectual premises that dominated his mind: he saw a need to subject military affairs to reasoned criticism and intellectual treatment, and the ensuing military doctrines were perceived as forming a definitive system." [Gat The Origins of Military Thought, p.33] Carlyle described it as a "strange military farrago, dictated, as I should think, under opium", which is perhaps not entirely as unfair as it may seem, a note on the original MS at Dresden reads, "I composed this work in Thirteen nights: I was ill, therefore, it may perhaps bear marks of the fever which I had. This ought to excuse the regularity of the arrangement, as also the elegance of style. I wrote in a military manner and to kill time." Whatever the oddness of its style the Reveries... was immensely influential, reprinted three times in 1757 and again in 1761 and 1763, German editions of 1757 and 1767 and English of 1757, 1759 and 1776. The Macclesfield copies with the Shirburn Castle blind stamp through the prelims. and bookplates to the front endpapers, that on the pastedowns being that of Lieutenant-General George Lane Parker, younger son of the Second Earl, who served for more than twenty years in the 1st Foot Guards. In 1773 at rank of Major-General he was appointed Colonel of the 20th Foot and saw service in the War of Independence. One of his contributions to the Shirburn Castle Library was a remarkable collection of books detailing the professional interests of a soldier in the latter part of the C18th. A handsome and well-provenanced set of this important work.

Cioranescu 25628. Travels, or Observations relating to several parts of Barbary and the Levant. Illustrated with cuts. Second Edition, with great Improvement

Printed for A. Millar and W. Sandby, London, England 1757 - All 38 engraved plates, including 15 maps (9 folding) and 22 woodcut illustrations (2 folding) , as listed on the page entitled "Plates contained in this work," are here. Newly guarded, sewen and bound by a master book binder. xviii, [2], 513, [1, list of plates] pp. Thomas Shaw (1692 or 1694 - 1751) graduated as MA from Oxford in 1720 and a year later was appointed Chaplain to the English factory at Algiers where he served from 1722 to 1733. He used his clerical position to travel and visited Egypt, Sinai, Cyprus, the Holy Land, Tunis and Carthage, as well as making various excursions into the interior of the Barbary states, Algiers, Tripoli, and Morocco. There is a great deal of material on Tunis and Algeria. The best description of North Africa of the period. A section on Lebanon is included in the description of the Levant. More than 640 species of plants are described. There is also a list of the rarer plants of Barbary, Egypt and Arabia. The plates include natural history, botany, animals, antiquities. "In Barbary travel he was comparatively safe, but in 'Aqabah he was stripped naked by robbers, and while travelling with 6000 pilgrims to Jerusalem he was seized and held to ransom. However, with 'a body capable of bearing the fatigues of travelling united to a mind rich in most kinds of human learning.'" (ODNB). Throughout all of his travels he was a meticulous observer, carefully recording geography, natural history, customs, and antiquities. He returned to England in 1733 published the first edition, engaged the botanist Johann Jakob Dillenius to catalogue his flora. The first edition of this work was published in 1738, and was criticized by a certain Dr. Richard Pocock, and in defense, Shaw wrote a supplement, the contents of which are interwoven in the present text. Shaw's aim was to restore the ancient geography of the regions he describes and to place the natural and civil history of such areas in a proper light. Shaw is well known in the field of botany for his catalogue of the rarer plants which he observed during his travels in Barbary, Egypt, and Arabia, a classification amounting to 632 species and including crude plates, all donated to and preserved by Oxford University under the name of Shawia. This is the last edition prepared by Shaw himself. "These Travels have been universally esteemed, not only for their accuracy and fidelity, but on account of the illustrations they contain of natural history, of the classic authors, and especially of the Scriptures" (Lowndes 2372-3); "For his time, his geological views are enlightened, while his conjectures on the subject of the pyramids have been fully confirmed by Belzoni and other investigators; his scrupulous fidelity was vindicated by James Bruce and by later African explorers." (DNB Cox I, 377; Weber 498. Blackmer Sale 307: "His work is valuable for its accurate descriptions of antiquities, geography & natural history he observed". Gibbon praised him and excepts him from the crowed of "blind" travelers.' His scrupulous fidelity was vindicated by James Bruce and by later African explorers. . . a noble example of typography' (D.N.B., vol 17, p 1384). Shaw presented his collection of specimens, ancient medals and busts to Oxford, where he was appointed principal of St. Edmund Hall, and held the chair of regius professor of Greek until his death in 1751. Lowndes 2372: 'These Travels have been universally esteemed, not only for their accuracy and fidelity, but on account of the illustrations they contain of natural history, of the classic authors, and especially of the Scriptures.' A handsomely printed work, the best description of North Africa of the period. The author visited Egypt, Sinai, Palestine, Cyprus and most of North Africa, and provides much material on Tunis and Algeria. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

I: 12 h. inc. portada, 240 pp., un mapa plegado. II: 4 h. inc. portada, 564 pp. III: 4 h. inc. portada, 436 pp. y 3 mapas plegados. Dublin. 1757. - 276pp. 20th-century red morocco, gilt, a.e.g., by Riviere & Son. One corner lightly worn; bookplate on front pastedown. Internally clean. Near fine. In a red half morocco slipcase and cloth chemise. First Dublin edition of this important work, after the first London of the same year, which is among the prime authorities for the Lake George campaign of 1755. This Dublin edition is expanded slightly, including George Washington's journal of his 1754 expedition in Ohio. Largely a vindication of Major Gen. William Shirley's conduct during his service as commander-in-chief of the British forces in North America during the Seven Years' War, for which he was charged with neglect of duty, reviewing the progress of the war in Virginia and the northern colonies, including Washington's capitulation at Fort Necessity and Braddock's defeat at Monongahela. Shirley was replaced by Lord Loudon as commander-in- chief. The following year Loudon, placing the blame for the loss of Oswego squarely on Shirley's shoulders, dismissed him from military office and removed him from the governorship of Massachusetts. It has been suggested that New York historian William Smith may have had a hand in the preparation of this work. ESTC N12681. HOWES L401, "aa."

Catalogue des Livres de feu M. Potier, Ancien Avocat au Parlement,

dont la Vente se fera le Jeudi quatre ["quatre" is crossed-out & corrected to "3" in a contemporary hand] Février 1757 & jours suivans. 4 p.l., 156, [4] pp.; 8, [3] pp. Two parts in one vol. 8vo, attractive antique half-calf & speckled boards, spine gilt, red morocco lettering piece on spine. Paris: Morel l'aîné, 1757. The Grolier Club and OCLC erroneously attribute the ownership of this catalogue to François Joachim Bernard Potier, duc de Gesvres (1692-1757). This is impossible as he was not a lawyer but a "noble d'epée" and died on 19 September 1757, seven months after this sale was held. Annie Charon, in the on-line "Esprit des livres," states that M. Potier was without doubt a member of the Potier family of magistrates and lawyers, many of whom had served the Parlement de Paris since the 15th century. We learn from the interesting two-page tribute in the preliminary leaves of the first part that Potier has devoted himself, in addition to his professional duties, to training young lawyers for the bar. His important collection of books on jurisprudence was available to everyone, both Frenchmen and foreigners. Indeed, the vast proportion of books described in the catalogue and supplement -- 2214 lots -- is devoted to legal topics. Fine copy. Priced throughout in a contemporary hand. ❧ Grolier Club, Printed Catalogues of French Book Auctions...1643-1830, 132-(lacking the schedule of sale for the first part and the Supplement). .

Folding map of the region during the Seven Year War, original colour in block and outline, dissected into 16 sections and mounted on linen, housed in the original marbled slipcase with the publisher's printed label to the upper board. The slipcase is a bit worn, but is sound, the map itself generally very good. Red half sheepskin, blue-grey paper sides (ca. 1800).

Second edition of both volumes of a remarkably detailed set of scale construction drawings (plans, sections, elevations, perspective views, etc., including many detail drawings of individual parts) of 18th-century Dutch waterworks, with the accompanying letterpress descriptions and notes. It includes locks, sluices, bridges, pumps, pile drivers, an ice-breaker, an elaborate water-bailing mill and more. Most of the plates measure about 45 x 54 cm, with the folding ones about 52 x 76 cm. At least most of the plates depict existing works, and the text occasionally gives some historical information. The drawings are so detailed and give such a clear picture of how the mechanisms functioned that one could use them to reconstruct the works shown. A fine copy, nearly untrimmed, with only some false folds in the half-title and an occasional minor defect in the paper. Plate 23 in volume 1 has no number, but it may have been trimmed off at the head. The inside front hinge has partly separated from the book-block, but the binding is otherwise good. A fine copy of a magnificent display of Dutch hydraulic engineering.

Oktober 1806); etc.
