d’AVILER, Augustin Charles
1756 VIGNOLA Five Orders of Architecture Michelangelo ILLUSTRATED d’Aviler Paris Giacomo Barozzi da Vignola was one of the most important and greatest Italian architects, not only of the 16th-century, but throughout European history. His work, ‘Five Orders of Architecture’ has been the root of many architectural feats and the cause of many commentaries and lessons on architecture. French architect Augustin-Charles d’Aviler was one of the main advocates for Vignola’s style. In 1691, he published a commentary on the theory of Vignola’s ‘Five Orders’ entitled ‘Cours d’Architecture’. This work not only includes Vignola’s original orders but also descriptions of fine buildings, works of Michelangelo, instructions on new designs, materials used in construction, as well as lessons on various skills – masonry, carpentry, gardening, roofing, blacksmithing, and other skills necessary for building. The interesting thing about Aviler’s commentary is that it was considered so accurate, that it was adopted by all French lexicons as the choice for French architecture. This 1756 French edition features dozens of impressive vignettes and engravings depicting all facets of construction including facades and columns to decorative doorknobs and hinges. [Click Below for Full Description]

Small number in the upper corner of title page; small chip to lower corner; light, uniform age-toning; very good condition. Colonial Earthquake Sermon printed in BOSTON. Charles Chauncy (1705-1787) was an American Congregational Pastor of the First Church in Boston and, arguably, one of the most influential religious figures of New England during his lifetime. He was the grandson of the second President of Harvard, he himself held a Masters' of Divinity from the university, he vehemently defended Universalism, and greatly opposed the evangelical revitalization movement sweeping the Colonies in the mid-1700s known as the First Great Awakening. The earthquakes to which Chauncy referred in his lecture were the Cape Ann Earthquake and the devastating Great Lisbon Earthquake, both in November of 1755. According to him, the Earth had undergone a great alteration since the Fall of Adam and Eve and had been cursed to endure terrible trials and disasters for generations. After quoting various texts in support of his theory, he concluded that the world had been "cleansed" and was reverting to its pre-Garden of Eden state "and that the very world we now live in thus changed and made new is the place where good men after the resurrection and judgment shall live and reign with Christ forever and ever.

¶ Sabin, 19370 " In his preface the author remarks that Pennsylvania suffered more than any of the other English colonies from the defeat of General Braddock, and that he is publishing this work because of the great interest the French people took in the progress of the War with England. He says that he has based his account of Pennsylvania on an English pamphlet published a few months earlier. Simson’s famous edition of the Elements went through 26 editions, the 26th appearing in 1844. His conjectures about Theon’s additions were later confirmed by manuscript studies of Theon’s commentary on Ptolemy. (Heath’s Euclid Chapter V). Simson’s notes (pp. 355-431 of this edition) remain an important part of classical scholarship. “Simson’s version and his notes are so well-known as not to need any further description.” (Heath, Chapter VIII) [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

s.l: 1756. Contemporary light brown polished calf. Spine in decorated compartments. Red morocco title-piece. Upper joint with narrow crack to head. A very good and fresh copy.An important document on the history of Canada and the United States. The work begins by looking at the causes of the conflict between Great Britain and France over the territory of Ohio. In essence, 1756 marked the beginning of the Seven Years' War or French and Indian War, a war of conquest to establish the legitimate occupation of the territories. This war overran the territory from Virginia and Nova Scotia to the region of the Canadian lakes, with some American Indians fighting on the side of the British, and some on the side of the French. Shebbeare reviews the British defeats, mistaken policy and the generals in Canada, the intervention of American militias and Washington. The author frankly accuses the British government (Kings and Ministers) of having failed to protect the British colonies in America and predicts the downfall of Britain, giving examples of jealousy and misguided policy in Canada. As well as this accusation, the author examines the situation of Britain in Europe, the treaty … [Click Below for Full Description]

HALLER (A. von)
"This work on the heart stamps Haller as a first-class investigator and experimental physiologist. His findings are based on animal experimentation and the experiments are carefully documented" (Heirs of Hippocrate n° 556). Blake, p. 195. Waller n°3997. Wellcome III, p. 199. Couverture rigide Bon frontispice en taille-douce,

First performed in Vienna at the Burgtheater on July 16th 1782, with a libretto by Johann Gottlieb Stephanie the Younger after Christoph Friedrich Bretzner. "The most important composition of this period [1780-1783] however, was Die Entführung aus dem Serail, the libretto of which was given to Mozart at the end of July 1781. Originally planned for September, the première was postponed until the following summer (Mozart had completed the first act in August 1781). The opera was a great success: Gluck requested an extra performance, Schikaneder's troupe mounted an independent production in September 1784 (although the aria 'Martern aller Arten' was replaced because the orchestra was incapable of performing the obbligato solos), and productions were soon mounted in cities throughout German-speaking Europe. The earliest lengthy obituary of Mozart, in the Musikalische Korrespondenz der Teutschen Filarmonischen Gesellschaft of 4 January 1792, described th … [Click Below for Full Description]
