REINHARDT, Christian Tobias Ephraim.
Glogau u. Leipzig, C. F. Günther u. (Teil 2:) Berlin u. Leipzig, o. Verlag, 1756-57. 144; 182 S. Mit 2 gefalteten Kupfertafeln. Pappband d. Mittelberger, Gottlieb
Frankfurt, 1756. [8],120pp. Bound to style in antique half calf and marbled boards. Very good. A mid-18th century account of German colonists in Pennsylvania by compatriot and traveller Gottlieb Mittelberger, reprinted in Frankfurt from the initial Stuttgart edition of the same year. Mittelberger's narrative is highly valuable for its firsthand information on the state of colonial Pennsylvania just prior to the French and Indian War. In particular, he gives many details of religious and cultural practices, social customs, societal structure, aspects of trade and agriculture, prevalent illnesses, and Indian relations, and also provides a detailed and lengthy description of the hardships of the transatlantic journey. The work is also notable for its frank appraisal of sexual behavior in Pennsylvania, and its denunciation of indentured servitude. Mittelberger travelled to Philadelphia from Heilbronn in 1750, and became a music and German teacher, before he returned in 1754, disappointed by his experiences. Indeed, his account is intended as warning to Germans not to immigrate to the colonies. Not only was the voyage a miserable one, according to the author, but the German immigrants were at great risk of being exploited in indentured servitude, which was often the price of passage, and being put to work in horrific conditions. Beyond this danger, Mittelberger reports on a widespread lack of religious belief and a prevalence of loose morals that he finds to be overwhelming. A fascinating though highly critical report on Pennsylvania in the early 1750s. HOWES M705, "aa." … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Jesuits of New Spain; Mexico; colonial manuscript].
Exceptional Mexican Colonial Catalogue of the Jesuits Fathers working in the Viceroyalty of New Spain (current Mexico and southern United States), a virtual who´s who of the Jesuit Order in the Viceroyalty; each entry begins with the name, county of origin (or region, most are Mexican-born, also from Guatemala), date of birth, date of entry to the Order and date of taking of habits. The catalogue is a unique insight to the human composition of the widespread Order, which only decades before had some of it´s members disproving the insularity of California, and making the first settlements in the region. The making of such catalogues of the members of the Order was by no means new, and several had been published in Mexico, all in Latin, however this is the only one in Spanish we have found; an earlier one, published in Mexico in 1751 "Catalogus Personarum, & Domiciliorum... Societas Jesu Mexicana", compiled by Juan Antonio Balthazar and Peter Zespedes, can possibly have served as foundation to this one. The printed edition is very rare, with three copies showing up in Wordlcat, none in the United States. This Spanish translation would appear to be unique. Several biographies, menologies, and chronics of the deeds and progresses of the Order´s activities in the Viceroyalty were published in the 17th and 18th centuries, however, at least to our knowledge, nothing of these characteristics in Spanish. Manuscript on paper, title illustrated within frame, clear handwriting, perfectly legible. Extremely rare, we were not able to trace any copies of this text … [Click Below for Full Description]

WÜRTZ, George-Christophe.
Blake, p. 496; Pritzel 41369; Quaritch, De Belder collection II, 907; cf. Hirsch VI, p. 339 (on the author). First and only edition of an "eccentric" pharmaceutical work by George-Christophe Wu¨rtz (1756-1823), a French philosopher and physician. In this work he "attempts to create a map of mental and physiological functions with herbal simples arranged according to the localities they effect. This is illustrated by the plate with the herbs appearing as stars as in a celestial chart" (Quaritch). The text, divided into two parts, discusses the method used and the scientific nature of the relations he found. Due to the completely new approach the present work earned him a respected position within the French and German medical field. Yadegar Asisi
Primus. Catellan, Jean-Marie De (1696-1771)
Toulouse: Aux Depens Du Caranove, Pres Les Augustins, 1756. Small Quarto. Nouvelle ed. French Language. Two volume set. Vol. 1: 596 pages. Vol. 2: 606 pages. The earlier editions of these arrests included not only serious capital crimes but the executions of heretics by burning at the stake. In 1733 Catellan received a papal bull which allowed him to administer justice though the extirpation of Protestants who had been suspended in 1669. (There continued to be secret meetings of Protestant congregations even after the Revocation of the Edict of Danes in 1685). While the wealthy business class that adopted the Protestant faith had fled France to enhance the economy of the Dutch, the economic ministers of Louis XIV and his successors came to depend upon increased taxation. Toulouse which along with Paris, was the earliest of these Parliaments, had to find those who could pay the tax and arrest those who clearly were defrauding the King. Here is a picture of the way the law was administered just a generation before the French Revolution. Many of these books were destroyed as emblems of the Ancient Regime, accounting for their rarity. Both volumes bound in a mottled calf, raised bands with compartments fully gilt decorated, red speckled edges, contemporary owner's name to title pages, small older repair to head of one volume, text clean and bright. A very nice, handsome set.

SAUNDERSON, Nicholas (1682-1739). -
Amsterdam, Arkste'e & Merkus, 1756. 2 voll. In-4. Prima edizione in francese. Smith, History of Mathematics, I, 454. DNB XVIII, 822: «The treatise is a model of careful exposition, and reminds one of the 'Algebra' which Euler dictated after having been overtaken by blindness. It contains an account of Euclid's doctrine of proportion, a good deal of what we now call mensuration, a consideration of Diophantine problems, and of magic squares, and it finishes with the solution of biquadratic equations». First French edition. With a fine portrait and 9 folding engr. plates. Contemp. mottled calf, spines with leather labels and richly gilt; a little rubbed, corners worn. Tears in 4 leaves towards end of vol. I repaired, plates a little browned and so … [Click Below for Full Description]
