[GRUNDIG, Christoph Gottlob]
One full-page woodcut on p. 105. 112 pp. Small 8vo, 19th-cent. half-sheep & marbled boards, spine gilt. Schneeberg: C.W. Fulden, 1756. First edition of the earliest bibliography of earthquakes and seismology; it is unknown to Besterman and Petzholdt and WorldCat locates no copy in North America. Grundig (1707-80), was a Protestant theologian, natural historian, and author of a number of works on natural history. He studied under Henckel at the Freiberg gymnasium who awakened his interest in mineralogy. Grundig was also the editor of several journals devoted to natural history and one of the founders of the famous mining school at Freiberg. He formed a large library and natural history collection (see Wilson, The History of Mineral Collecting 1530-1799, p. 173). Grundig wrote this work as a result of the dramatic Lisbon earthquake of 1755. He lists in alphabetical order the earlier published writings on earthquakes, gives a biographical sketch of the authors, and describes the contents of each work. Fine copy. ❧ Poggendorff, I, 965.

BELLIN, Jacques-Nicolas
Dépôt de la Marine c 1756 - 420mm x 580mm. Original hand-coloured copper engraved map. Large decorated cartouche to the top left, and two inset maps to the bottom right, one a plan of the port and battlements at Mahon, the other of the Western Mediterranean as a whole. A fine copy, with the central crease as usual. Jacques-Nicolas Bellin was a French hydrographic engineer who first joined the Dépôt de la Marine, the institution founded in 1720 to draw and amend the maps used by the navy, at the age of eighteen. He first drew the map from which this copy is engraved in 1740, shortly after his promotion to Ingenieur Hydrographe de la Marine, a promotion which gave him the monopoly in the printing and trade of navy maps. This plan with the Port of Mahon correctly orientated is likely to be drawn after the capture of Minorca by the French navy following the Siege of Fort S. Phillipe (depicted on the South bank of the plan). The map of the Balearics as a whole was one of only twenty-six maps Bellin had bound up and sent to the Royal Society of London in 1752, as part of his candidacy file for election to the scientific society. [Lisbon], [1756]. Recent boards.. The legislation governing one of the Marquês de Pombals most important ventures. "The company statutes were largely based on a plan put forward by the large noble vineyard owners of the Douro . . . The Douro producers reacted enthusiastically when Pombal announced his planned company in 1756. A mix of investments in the company's first capital fund was solicited from both producers and Oporto businessmen . . . The objective of the Upper Douro Company was essentially to protect the upper Douro vineyard owners from the vast expansion of vine cultivation by smaller producers which had occurred over the previous decades . . . All opposition was ruthlessly repressed on a day-to-day basis by the stringent enforcement of the Douro company's monopoly rights, and more generally by the vigorous exercise of military and judicial authority . . . The state was intervening to protect agricultural producers by seeking to control production and thereby assure stable markets and prices" (Maxwell, Pombal, paradox of the enlightenment, p. 62-3). Marquês de Pombal, Catálogo Bibliográfico e Iconográfico, 133. WorldCat. & COPAC both list 2 copies only.

Bavaria, Munich, d.d. 27 August 1823. Folio. No covers, only paper endpapers. 370 x 280 mm. (8) pages on vellum. Manuscript, calligraphic text with printed decorative margins. Peter moved there as well, where he served as a violinist. The French Revolution brought him to London, where his career as a composer began. During his time in London he lived at 44 Greek Street. NEWTON, Sir Isaac.
London: Printed for R. and J. Dodsley, 1756. First printing, very rare, of these letters of Newton which Koyré has described as "one of the most precious and important documents for the study and interpretation of Newtonian thought" (Koyré, p. 202). Newton here gives his views on the nature of gravity, on the formation of the solar system, on action-at-a-distance, and much else. He even foresaw in these letters the modern theory of galaxy formation (see below). Newton had been very careful to exclude such speculative 'philosophical' comments from Principia: in its second edition he famously proclaimed "Hypotheses non fingo," or "I feign no hypotheses." No copy of these letters located in auction records in the last 75 years. "When the great English natural philosopher Robert Boyle died at the end of 1691, he endowed a lecture series designed to promote Christianity against what Boyle took to be the atheism that had infected English culture after the revolutionary period of the mid-century. Famous Newtonians such as Samuel Clarke and William Whiston would eventually give the Boyle lectures. The first "Boyle lecturer" was the theologian Richard Bentley (1662-1742), who would eventually become the Master of Newton's alma mater, Trinity College, Cambridge... When preparing his lectures for publication--they had been presented to a public audience in London in 1692--Bentley conferred with Newton, hoping to solicit his help in deciphering enough of the Principia to use its results as a bulwark against atheism. Newton obliged, and a famous correspondence between the two began (eve … [Click Below for Full Description]

Warmholtz 6855 not. Carlander III, s. 88f.

HOMER:
Glasguae; In Aedibus Academicis, excudebant Robertus et Andreas Foulis, Academiae Typographi, 1756, 1758., 1756. 4 volumes in 2. Folio, 320 x 197 mms., pp. xi [xii blank], 312; [iv], 336; [viii], 297 [298 blank]; [iv], 336, complete with half-titles as called for by Gaskell but without the "rarely found" general title-page in the first volume of The Iliad, lacking the first blank and the final blank leaves in the first volume of the Odyssey, with a portrait bust of Homer from another edition of his works bound in as frontispiece, with off-set browning to title-page, contemporary calf, neatly rebacked with red morocco labels; some marginal damp-staining to margins in first volume of Odyssey and at end of second volume, but generally a good set. This is probably the most significant landmark in the printing history of Greek texts and certainly one of the most important texts in the history of typography. The type was especially designed by Alexander Wilson, and it was edited by Professors James Moor and George Muirhead. The volumes were awarded the Silver Medals of the Select Society of Edinburgh in 1756 and 1757. In 1757, The Scots Magazine also recorded that the Foulis Press had "gained all the prizes yet given by this society for book-printing." David Murray wrote that "for beauty as well as for accuracy, these splendid volumes can hardly be surpassed," and quoted another who declared that the large paper copy was "one of the finest monuments of Greek typography which our nation possesses." W Owen
London - W Owen, 1756 Book. VERY GOOD INDEED. Hardcover. A scarce eighteenth century book . Containing such instructions as will enable the shop-keeper to carry on his business with more ease and greater exactness than is usually done. Gives a good overview of the world of business and commerce in London in the 18th century. With additional page numbered *45 and 46* has been inserted between p 44 and 45. Though not the first of it's kind, this scarce pocket sized work provides a complete overview of various aspects of trade and book-keeping. Manuals of this kind had begun to appear since the late 17th century, and were usually aimed at a broad audience, in particular towards 'Gentleman'. Previously volumes sought, by claiming to appeal to all classes, to increase readership, as it was supposed that all could benefit from an understanding of book keeping, weights and measures, from Lord to apprentice. By contrast, this work aims itself squarely at a trade audience, and as stated in the preface, 'in the plainest language. . . nothing introudced without being explained in an easy and familiar method: Most of the books of this sort were either superior to common capacities and ordinary dealings, or hand introduced such loads of rubbish as were fitted more to increase the difficulty than to make this sort of knowledge useful and agreeable. ' Furthermore, this volume was released as a handy pocket-sized work, rather than more awkward octavos or folios that had more oftencome before. Complete collation unavailable, although appears to be complete. Condition: Rebound in quarter cal … [Click Below for Full Description]
