Teuber, Johann Martin.
Regensburg und Wien Bader 1756 - (21 x 16 cm). (20) 82 S.; SS. 83-211.
The Hague, Pierre Gosse, Junior, 1756. Folio (375 × 245 mm). Contemporary sprinkled calf, raised bands, gilt sun-in-splendour tools within palm branches to the compartments, red morocco label, blue sprinkled edges. Lightly browned and occasional spots of foxing, but overall a very handsome copy, spine a little dry and some rubbing to the boards, head-cap chipped. Fine large engraved trophy vignette to the title page, similar head- and tailpieces throughout, 40 engraved plates, 18 of them double-page, 4 double-page, folding. From the Macclesfield library at Shirburn Castle, with the blind stamp through the prelims and bookplates to the front endpapers of each volume, that on the pastedown being that of Lieutenant-General George Lane Parker, younger son of the second Earl. First Edition, surprisingly uncommon, three copies only on COPAC. "De Saxe's work is a comprehensive treatise on war. He puts forward his ideal military model, his "legion", and taking issue with the views and practices of his age, he advances many original ideas. However, rather than discussing his military doctrines, the aim of this book is to elucidate the intellectual premises that dominated his mind: he saw a need to subject military affairs to reasoned criticism and intellectual treatment, and the ensuing military doctrines were perceived as forming a definitive system" (Gat, The Origins of Military Thought, p.33). Carlyle described it as a "strange military farrago, dictated, as I should think, under opium", which is perhaps not entirely as unfair as it may seem, a note on the original MS at Dresden … [Click Below for Full Description]

[SAINT John of God Hospitals]
[Madrid, 1756. [2]pp. plus integral blank leaf. Maltese cross at head of title. Folio. Dbd. Contemporary manuscript annotation in ink and later pencil annotation on first page. Accomplished in manuscript at Buen Retiro, Spain on Feb. 13, 1756, signed by Joachim Joseph Vazquez y Morales, with additional manuscript annotations. Manuscript inscriptions on recto and verso of integral blank leaf. Extremely light dampstaining in margins, occasional minor soiling. A very good copy. A rare broadsheet proclamation by Ferdinand VI, King of Spain, confirming that the law, recorded earlier in the RECOPILACION DE LAS INDIAS, outlining the method of reviewing the administration and recording the accounts of the hospitals in the New World maintained by the religious order of St. John of God is to be observed in a precise and punctual manner. The Hospital Brothers of St. John of God were present in America, most notably New Spain and Peru, beginning in the early 17th century. Following the initial 16th- century wave of evangelization represented by the Franciscans, Dominicans, Augustinians, Mercedarians, and Jesuits, the Hospital Brothers was one "of another group of orders, of varying characteristics but largely devoted to caring for the sick and the destitute in the cities. Their very existence attested the new needs of an increasingly complex colonial society" (CAMBRIDGE HISTORY OF LATIN AMERICA). This copy, accomplished in manuscript in Buen Retiro on Feb. 13, 1756, is signed by Joachim Joseph Vazquez y Morales as representative of the King of Spain with the inscription, "Yo El R … [Click Below for Full Description]
