SAINTARD (Pierre-Louis de);

Abraham De Moivre became, with Edmund Halley, a founder of English actuarial science. The author's dedicatory letter is address to Lord George Carpenter (1702-1749) (the first edition had been dedicated to Newton), where the author states emphatically "that this Doctrine is so far from encouraging Play, that it is rather a Guard against it. . ." [DNB, vol. 38, p.116]. / "The first edition of this work contains 175 pages, the second edition 258 pages and the third 348 pages. (FOULIS PRESS). HOMER
Glasguae [Glasgow]: In aedibus academicis, excudebant Robertus et Andreas Foulis, 1756-58. First Edition of the Foulis Homer. This is the outstanding Large Paper version of the most esteemed product of the Foulis Press, praised by Harwood as "one of the most splendid editions of Homer ever delivered to the world," with accuracy "equal to its magnificence." According to Gaskell, the Foulis Homer is "a magnificent achievement, a modern approach to type design." The Greek type was designed by Alexander Wilson, and was notable for breaking with the style of Garamond's grec du roi. Lowndes considered it "one of the most splendid specimens of Greek typography extant." Edward Gibbon observed the impact beautiful printing has on the reader: "As the eye is the organ of fancy, I read Homer with more pleasure in the Glasgow edition. Through that fine medium, the poet's sense appears more beautiful and transparent." Dibdin describes the "great splendor and beauty" of the large paper copies, one of which resided at the Althorp library. The Homer was edited by Glasgow classics professors James Moor and George Muirhead, who proofed it, page by page, at least six times. The great pains paid off: Robert and Andrew Foulis were awarded a silver medal by the Select Society of Edinburgh for the best-printed and most correct Greek book. Founded by Robert Foulis in 1740 and continued with and by his brother Andrew, the Foulis Press produced more than 700 editions in six decades of publishing, always characterized by accurate scholarship, fine quality paper and types, and printing that was done t … [Click Below for Full Description]

W Owen
London - W Owen, 1756. A scarce eighteenth century book . Containing such instructions as will enable the shop-keeper to carry on his business with more ease and greater exactness than is usually done. Gives a good overview of the world of business and commerce in London in the 18th century. With additional page numbered *45 and 46* has been inserted between p 44 and 45. Though not the first of it's kind, this scarce pocket sized work provides a complete overview of various aspects of trade and book-keeping. Manuals of this kind had begun to appear since the late 17th century, and were usually aimed at a broad audience, in particular towards 'Gentleman'. By contrast, this work aims itself squarely at a trade audience, and as stated in the preface, 'in the plainest language. . . nothing introudced without being explained in an easy and familiar method: Most of the books of this sort were either superior to common capacities and ordinary dealings, or hand introduced such loads of rubbish as were fitted more to increase the difficulty than to make this sort of knowledge useful and agreeable. ' Furthermore, this volume was released as a handy pocket-sized work, rather than more awkward octavos or folios that had more oftencome before. Complete collation unavailable, although appears to be complete. Condition: Rebound in quarter calf with marbled boards. Externally … [Click Below for Full Description]
