JONSON, Ben.
1756. "The pseudo-scientific subject [of alchemy] provided a rich source of puns and metaphors that Johnson delighted in using to dazzle his audience." (Flachmann) Jonson is regularly considered the second-most popular English playwright, only to, of course, Shakespeare. The real draw of Jonson's work was his magnum opus, The Alchemist - a work in which Johnson satirizes alchemy and creates a mystique about a 'con-game' that truly was 'gold.' This beautiful seven volume set was the first edition of his complete works edited by William Gifford. This mid-18th-century printing of the complete works of Ben Jonson is a first collected edition edited by Peter Whalley.

BONNEVILLE Zacharie Pazzi de
A La Haye: chez Pierre Gosse Junior. Brunet and Graesse have the first edition appearing in 1756; we have not found any trace of this edition. With 56 folding plates. A scarce work. Not in the Bibliotheque Nationale de France and numerous other great libraries. Contemporary marbled sheep, spine in 6 decorated compartments. The work consists of a commentary on the notes and propositions left by Marechal de Saxe. These are various, and include the reasons for having a school of instruction for officers, to the use of the bayonet; there is also a curious note on the Tatars and Chinese. %.

MOUNT, W. AND J.
"A Chart of Part of the North Sea from the South Foreland to Burnham Flatts, and from Callis Schelling Isle"?Copper engraving from "The English Pilot Describing The Sea-Coasts, Capes, Head-Lands, Soundings, Sands, Shoals, Rocks and Dangers, The Bays, Roads, Harbours, Rivers and Ports in the Whole Northern Navigation"? published by W. and J. Mount, T. Page and Sons, London 1756. Coloured by a later hand. Size: 44 x 54 cm. The English Pilot was an important British sea-atlas published from 1671 to 1803. Initially published by John Seller, publication of the atlas changed hands periodically, with other publishers including Charles Price, John Thornton, and the Mount & Page firm. The charts from the English Pilot were intended as working charts so there was an effort to make them accurate, although predictably, many seamen complained that the charts were consistently out of date and that changes were slow to appear, a charge leveled at virtually every British, French and American Chart maker, including the respective governments of these nations. Ironically, it was in no small part due to the proprietary nature of the information included in the maps and sailing directions that there was a tendency for commercial pilots to pass the information from mariner to chart-maker more slowly than might otherwise have been the case, although the chart makers on the Thames and otherwise were undoubtedly reluctant to immediately make each and every necessary correction, for fear of undermining the economic viability of their businesses. Price: Euro975,- (excl. VAT/BTW).

In the great finales of Acts 2 and 4, Mozart reached a level which he could never surpass; indeed, he was hardly to equal the Bb Allegro of the second act finale for its mercurial motivic play and the subsequent Andante in 6/8 for the synchronization of dramatic revelation with the demands of musical form." Mozart, Wolfgang Amadeus. (1756 - 1791)Trois Quatuors...Oeuvre XVIII, 3e Livre de Quatuors. ["Prussian" String Quartets: K. 575, 589, 590] Paris: Imbault. c. 1792. Folio. 20+19+17+15 pp. Engraved. [PN] 345. With the notice of Pascal Taskin laid over the Imbault impression on the Violon I folio. Blue pencil notation on the title pages, usual foxing. A very fine and early copy of these late quartets. Gribenski 21.51. "Any difficulty that Mozart may have had in starting the Quartet K. 575, intended to be the first of six for the cello-loving King of Prussia, may well be largely due to that patron's passion. When in June 1790 Mozart himself said the task was still 'troublesome,' he was surely alluding partly to the imbalance that had been caused by the need to give some prominence to the cello, and to his own innovaions of texture and emphasis, much weight being given to the finales. The three quartets which he completed are the D major, K. 575, entered in his catalogue in June 1789; the Bb major, K. 589, entered in May 1790; and the F major, K. 590, entered in June 1790." (Alec Hyatt King, "Mozart Compendium" (Landon), p. 296) The quartets were first published by Artaria in Vienna, just after Mozart's death and shortly before the present edition. Mozart, Wolfgang Amadeus. (1756 - 1791) [Handel, George Frederic. (1685-1759)]Händel's Oratorium Der Messias nach W. A. Mozart's Bearbeitung. Leipzig: Breitkopf & Hartel. [1803]. First printing. Three parts bound as one: Erster Theil (108 pp); Zweyter Theil (96 pp); Dritter Theil (48 pp). Oblong quarto, contemporary marbled boards with manuscript title plate on front board. Boards and spine heavily worn, with one corner chipped from front cover. Internally in very fine condition with scattered foxing and a few pencil notations. First edition of the full score of Mozart's re-orchestration of Handel's Messiah, fully engraved. Köchel 572. "In 1789, at the request of Baron Gottfried van Swieten, Mozart, by all accounts a profound admirer of Handel, also re-orchestrated Messiah. It is often said that the subject of the re-orchestration was to compensate for the absence of an organ in the hall, but this is not borne out by what Mozart does, which seems more of a translation into terms suggested by the ordinary forces for these concerts; these included flutes, oboes, clarinets, bassoons, horns and trombones. The trumpets were demoted from melodic to harmonic instruments. 'The trumpet shall sound' and 'If God be for us,' which van Swieten called the 'cold aria,' were rewritten, the latter as a recitative" (Luckett, Handel's Messiah: A Celebration, 214). GELASIUS DE CILIA [Gelasio di Cilia] (1654-1721).
Radlmayr, 1756. Eighth edition. Small 8vo. 774, [10] pp. Head and tail pieces. Handsomely bound in full black morocco, gilt rule surround, corner fillets, raised bands, gilt spine compartments, all edges gilt. Ownership signature of the Ecclesio Parochialis in Wolterdingen [Germany], 1757. Lovely copy. A "CURIOUS TREASURY OF BENEDICTIONS, EXORCISMS, CHARMS, &C.": Contains a widely ranging series of benedictions and rites: "Gelasius de Cilia, in the curious Treasury of benedictions, exorcisms, charms, &c., gives several in which the titulus in introduced; for instance in the exorcism of the charta, or written charm, efficacious against demons and spectres, which commenced with a cross placed, like the little crucifix on the cross found at Clare. . . In the Benediction against Tempests we find the sentence - 'Jesus Nazarenus Rex Judeorum, - Titulus triumphalis benedicat et custodiat nos ab omnibus malis;' and in the solemn Exorcism of persons bewitched ('contra omnia malefica') the demon was adjured 'per triumphalem titulum,' which is directed to be written on the forehead of the sufferer." - p. 67. "Gold pectoral cross found at Clare Castle, Suffolk." The Archaeological Journal: Published Under the Direction of the . . . , Volume 25. London, 1868. Regarding exorcisms, Clement XI objected to some in current use: "Some of the formulas, in fact, were coarsely vituperative in the highest degree. The demons were addressed as infernal beasts, vile filth of hell, stinking dung and other contemptuous epithets, and were threatened that their meat and drink should be fire, hail, sn … [Click Below for Full Description]

[LEPRINCE DE BEAUMONT (Mme)]
¶ Barbier II. 1251 - Quérard supercheries I, 26591 - Quérard Fr. litt. HALE, Thomas.
London: Printed for T. Osborne, J. Shipton, J. Hodges, T. Trye, S. Crowder, & H. Woodgate, 1756. Large folio (415 x 245 mm). Contemporary sprinkled calf, brown morocco label. From the library of Robert Jocelyn, Earl of Roden, with his bookplate to pastedown, shelfmarks at head of spine and to pastedown. Supplementary leaves present. Joint ends starting to split, some wear to extremities and covers, front free endpaper creased, very occasional light worming and a few blemishes to contents. A very good copy. Engraved frontispiece and numerous engraved plates. First edition, issued in 61 numbers from 28 June 1755 to 21 August 1756. In size and scope perhaps the most ambitious guide to farming of the 18th century, Hale's posthumous book, gathered from his papers, was quickly followed by a Dublin edition the following year and a three-volume second edition the year afterwards. It provides a valuable snapshot of the methods of British farming in the middle of the century, and incorporates many of the new discoveries and technologies in agriculture and husbandry which had recently been introduced. MILAN. MANUSCRIT.

Leipziger Ostermesse, [Leipzig?]. First edition. In somewhat later hard paper covered with paste paper. With woodcut initials and a headpiece. 40 p. and 2 hand-colored, folding maps (from Schreiber's Atlas Minor). Signatures: A-E4. Map size: 237 × 173 mm. Scarce and important German geographical work on the British and French colonies in North America, in relation to the ongoing French and Indian Wars and the struggle for Acadia. Despite the title which calls for one, the book holds two hand-colored maps, both from Schreiber's Atlas Minor. The first shows the whole continent of America with accompanying table, it shows California as an island and other common cartographical oddities of the era. The second "Charte von dem Engelländischen u. Französischen Besitzungen in Nord America" is an interesting, detailed map of the British and French colonies in North America, shows many forts, villages, Indian names, and early colonial settlements, and includes excellent details west of the Mississippi River and the Great Lakes and Texas region. The map is also an early appearance of the newly formed (1752) Georgia Colony. The coloring distinguishes the region between the Appalachian Mountains and the Mississippi River disputed by France and England. The book starts with an explanation of the map and its coloring, and continues with the description of the territories involved or had importance in the French and Indian Wars. Besides the general overview, it gives a detailed explanation of the qualities and abilities of Newfoundland, Cape Breton Island, Bermuda, a lengthy description of … [Click Below for Full Description]

First edition of this impressive herbal by the prolific and energetic botanist who first introduced the Linnaean system of nomenclature to Great Britain -- a polemical figure whose failed acting career and disputes with members of the Royal Society led to academic snubbing despite his notable contributions to science and literature. This work was originally issued in 52 parts between January 1756 and January 1757, and appears here in its first book-form edition, with a title-page printed in red and black (the title-page is dated 1756 as it was issued with the first part, as per Henrey). Entries cover general plant descriptions along with information on medicinal usages; exotic species grown in Britain are included along with the "natives" of the title. => 75 copper-engraved plates by Boyce, Darly and Edwards, Benning, and other hands follow the text, each plate packed with images of multiple plants (uncolored here). The frontispiece, "The Genius of Health receiving the tributes of Europe, Asia, Africa, and America, and delivering them to the British Reader," was designed by Samuel Wade and engraved by Henry Roberts; Wade also designed the title-page vignette, "Asculapius and Flora gathering from the Lap of Nature," which was engraved by his frequent collaborator Charles Grignion the Elder.
1756. Madrid. Viuda de Manuel Fernandez. Folio (295 x 194 mm). 14 ff., 342 pp., 116 pp., 248 pp. Later mottled calf in period style, raised bands to spine, heavily tooled in gilt with red lettering piece, light rubbing, excellent condition. A fine copy in every way, pristine.- First edition of this important chronicle on the history of Spanish exploration, evangelizing missions and settlement in Asia: the Philippines, China and Japan. It is divided into three books, the first deals with the Philippine Islands and the mission carried out by the Franciscan Order, it contains extensive and detailed information on the islands, their conquest, early exploration, the native people and customs; it is a notable characteristic that the description of the archipelago and its coast were accurate enough for navigational use. The second book deals with China and Cochin China, the attempts to establishing missions, the first contact with the Chinese, imprisonments, local customs, progress of the faith, etc.; the third with Japan, similar aspects to the former. The Compendiois modelled and takes much from San Antonio's "Chronicas de la Apostolica Provincia de S. Gregorio de religiosos descalzos de N. S. P. S. Francisco en las Islas Philipinas, China, Japon", printed in Sampaloc in 1738-44, although it is a different work in itself. Of remarkable rarity in the market, we could trace no copy at auction in over 50 years. Institutional copies are more common. Palau, 154271. Cordier, Japonica 440. Retana, 309. Medina, Islas Filipinas, 483.
