Four Letters . to Doctor Bentley.

Printed for R. and J. Dodsley, London 1756 - First printing, very rare, of these letters of Newton which Koyré has described as "one of the most precious and important documents for the study and interpretation of Newtonian thought" (Koyré, p. 202). Newton here gives his views on the nature of gravity, on the formation of the solar system, on action-at-a-distance, and much else. He even foresaw in these letters the modern theory of galaxy formation (see below). Newton had been very careful to exclude such speculative ‘philosophical’ comments from Principia: in its second edition he famously proclaimed "Hypotheses non fingo," or "I feign no hypotheses." No copy of these letters located in auction records in the last 75 years."When the great English natural philosopher Robert Boyle died at the end of 1691, he endowed a lecture series designed to promote Christianity against what Boyle took to be the atheism that had infected English culture after the revolutionary period of the mid-century. Famous Newtonians such as Samuel Clarke and William Whiston would eventually give the Boyle lectures. The first "Boyle lecturer" was the theologian Richard Bentley (1662-1742), who would eventually become the Master of Newton’s alma mater, Trinity College, Cambridge. When preparing his lectures for publication—they had been presented to a public audience in London in 1692—Bentley conferred with Newton, hoping to solicit his help in deciphering enough of the Principia to use its results as a bulwark against atheism. Newton obliged, and a famous correspondence between the two began (eventually published as [the present work]). The exchange is of great philosophical interest, for Bentley elicited a number of important clarifications that have no peer within Newton's published oeuvre" (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy).Bentley’s first letter is lost, but from Newton’s reply we know that he must have "asked why some matter in the Universe formed the luminous Sun and other matter became the dark planets, whether the motions of the planets could arise from natural causes, whether the lower densities of the outer planets were caused by their distance from the Sun, and what produced the inclination of the Earth's axis "In answering the first question, Newton made his famous prescient comments about the distribution of matter in the Universe: As to your first query, it seems to me that if the matter of our sun and planets and all the matter in the universe were evenly scattered throughout all the heavens, and every particle had an innate gravity toward all the rest, and the whole space throughout which this matter was scattered was but finite; the matter on the outside of the space would, by its gravity, tend toward all the matter on the inside, and by consequence, fall down into the middle of the whole space and there compose one great spherical mass. But if the matter was evenly disposed throughout an infinite space, it could never convene into one mass; but some of it would convene into one mass and some into another, so as to make an infinite number of great masses, scattered at great distances from one to another throughout all that infinite space. And thus might the sun and fixt stars be formed, supposing the matter were of a lucid nature. But how the matter should divide itself into two sorts, and that part of it which is fit to compose a shining body should fall down into one mass and make a sun and the rest which is fit to compose an opaque body should coalesce, not into one great body, like the shining matter, but into many little ones; or if the sun at first were an opaque body like the planets, or the planets lucid bodies like the sun, how he alone would be changed into a shining body whilst all they continue opaque, or all they be changed into opaque ones whilst he remains unchanged, I do not think explicable by meer natural causes, but am forced to ascribe it to the counsel and contrivance of a voluntary agent."Bentley wrote back questioning whether matter in a uniform distributi [Attributes: First Edition]

Two volumes, quarto, with seven folding maps, complete with errata leaves, and with the additional series of asterisked leaves (volume I, pp. 437*-450*); contemporary French mottled calf, spines gilt in compartments between raised bands, double red & green labels, red edges, marbled endpapers; bookplates; in very good condition. The great French study of the South Seas. A fine copy of this important work: 'An extremely important and thorough collection of voyages, and one of the outstanding works relating to the early history of Australasia' (Hill). This is an especially large copy (measuring 285 x 210 mm.), with extremely generous margins, and probably represents a Large Paper issue: interestingly, the four leaves consisting of pages 401-408 have been made up to size from an example of the regular issue by extending their margins to match: they illustrate the substantial difference between the size of a regular copy and this special version. We have not handled a copy of this size before.De Brosses' book is one of the most important general works dealing with early voyages to the Pacific, which aimed to stimulate French discovery and colonisation of the South Seas. It contains an account of all voyages to the south, beginning with the second Vespucci expedition of 1502 and going up to 1747, including the voyages of Magellan, Drake, Schouten, Tasman and others. Edward Gibbon applauded the care and 'singular diligence' of de Brosses as an editor, and the text was later silently used as the basis for Callander's highly influential Terra Australis Cognita of 1766-8 (in this form it had much to do with British plans for colonial expansion by transportation). 'Extremely important. Here de Brosses suggests that France should colonise Australia, virtually predicting the basis of its final settlement by maintaining that the colonisation should be by France's 'foundlings, beggars and criminals'. This is somewhat scarce, but with patience copies can still be obtained', wrote Rodney Davidson in 1970; the book is nowadays actually quite rare on the market. This copy is complete with the additional "asterisk leaves", so-called because they are numbered 437*-450*: containing an article "Sur les découvertes des Hollandais dans l'Australasie", with details of the discoveries of the Dutch in Australasia, they are not always present. The maps include those of Australia, New Guinea, and northeastern Australia which make the book particularly significant.

Nothing escaped his attention on his travels on horseback - plants and insects, ruinic stones and other ancient remnants, farmers working in the fields and meadows, the changes in the weather" (DSB).//Soulsby 213.

On the advantage of taking the mean of a number of observations.

Davis & Reymers, London 1756 - Classic of Statistics and Data Processing Simpson, Thomas (1710-61). On the advantage of taking the mean of a number of observations, in practical astronomy. In: Philosophical Transactions 49 (1755), pp. 82-93. Whole number, 4to. [16], 444pp. Fold. plates, text illustrations. London: L. Davis & C. Reymers, 1756. 255 x 195 mm. (uncut & unopened). Quarter morocco, marbled boards in period style. Some dust-soiling and fraying to edges, but very good. First Edition. Simpson's paper is considered a milestone in statistical inference, as well as the earliest formal treatment of any data-processing practice. Simpson was the first to attempt to prove mathematically that the mean result of several observations is nearer to the truth than any single observation (the law of large numbers). A key feature of his paper was that Simpson chose to focus "not on the observations themselves . . . but on the errors made in the observations, on the differences between the recorded observations and the actual position of the body being observed. . . . [This] was the critical step that was to open the door to an applicable quantification of uncertainty" (Stigler, Hist. Statistics, pp. 90-91; see also pp. 88-94). "Simpson was the first to characterize the errors in observations as independent events, taking positive and negative values with equal probabilities, and the first to provide a mathematical expression for the probability that the error in the mean result will lie between assigned limits" (Todhunter, History of Probability, p. 309). Also present in this volume are two important medical papers: Jonathan Wathen's "A method proposed to restore the hearing, when injured from an obstruction of the tuba Eustachiana" (G-M 3356), describing his method of relieving catarrhal deafness by injections into the Eustachian tube through a catheter passed into the nose; and John Machin's "An uncommon case of a distempered skin" (G-M 4013), containing the first known description of ichthyosis hystrix. MOST CELEBRATED MIDWIFE OF THE 17th CENTURY - - Justine Siegemundin (1651-1705) vollst. - - Rare edition of this classic in Obstetrics and Gynecology. Justine Siegemundin was the most celebrated German midwife of the 17th century. In 1672 she obtained a copy of De Graff's book of generation, which started her on her career as a really scientific midwife. Basically self-taught she developed her skills to the degree that she was made Court Midwife by Frederic III and the royal family of Prussia. The book, a result of her own experience, is of major interest and importance for its original obstetrical illustrations not copied from Roesslin or Rueff. The fact that the work was written in German instead of Latin aroused a great deal of criticism. The major portion of the book consists of a dialogue between Justine and her pupil Christina. Generously illustrated with instructive copperplates, the "Siegemundin" had a great influence and new editions appeared up to 1756. - - cf. Garrison & Morton 6149 (1st. Ed. 1690); Hirsch V, 394-95; Thomas, Classical Contributions to Obstetrics and Gynecology, pp.54-59; Waller 8294; Fasbender 213-16; Neuburger-Pagel III, 894-96.

Par Centurion Lucas 1756 - - Par Centurion Lucas, A Rouen 1756, In 8 (10,5x16,5cm), (24) 536pp., relié. - Edition originale, rare. Plein Velin souple. (24) 536pp. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
