Oeuvres de Mr. de Maupertuis. Nouvelle edition, corrigée & augmentée. 4 Vols.

Lyon: Jean-Marie Bruyset, 1756. - Next-to-last (and probably still best) edition of Maupertuis's Collected Works, the final one published in his lifetime. Frontispiece, 2 leaves, vi, 1 leaf, xxviii, 309 pp, [1, errata], 1 leaf [contents]; 2 leaves, iv, 399 pp, 3 leaves [contents, errata]; 2 leaves, vii, [1, errata], 468 pp, 2 leaves [contents]; 2 leaves, viii, 6 leaves [contents, Avertissement], 346 pp, 2 leaves [Approbation] pp. Contemporary full leather. Joints rubbed, a bit worn in some spots, hinges starting. Else a Very Good set. Reprints (in Vol. II) Garrison-Morton 215.2, Vénus physique [1745]. Houzeau & Lancaster (no. 3481) lists a number of editions of Maupertuis's Ouevres, both in two and four volumes and both 8vo and 4to, but the actual existence of each of them remains uncertain. Only one was published after the one offered here, posthumously, also in Lyon and in four volumes, in 1768. The other editions listed by Houzeau & Lancaster are: quarto, Dresden, 1752; 4 vol., 8vo, Paris, 1752; 2 vol., 8vo, Berlin & Lyon, 1753; 4 vol., quarto, Lyon, 1754; 4 vol., 8vo, Lyon, 1754. The edition offered here, the first one to include a portrait of Maupertuis (curious in that Bentley Glass describes him as 'very short. His body was always in motion; he had numerous tics. He was careless of his apparel'), is the only one cited by Glass in his D.S.B. article on Maupertuis (Vol. IX, pp. 186-9). Vénus physique 'was an enlarged and more fully analyzed argument against the then-dominant biological theory of the preformation of the embryo. Maupertuis argued convincingly that the embryo could not be preformed, either in the egg or in the animalcule (spermatozoon), since hereditary characteristics could be passed down equally through the male or the female parent. He rejected the vitalistic notion that some 'essence' from one of the parents could affect the preformed fetus in the other parent, or that maternal impressions could mold the characteristics of the offspring. A strict mechanist, although a believer in the epigenetic view of the origin of the embryo, he looked for some corporeal contribution from each parent as a basis of heredity' (D.S.B. IX: 187). The 1768 edition cannot be much changed from the one offered here, for as Glass notes, Maupertuis 'departed again for France, a very sick man, in May 1756. Greatly distressed by the outbreak of the Seven Years' War, he decided to return home by way of Switzerland. He went to Toulouse, whence he set out again in May 1758. At Basel, too ill to proceed, he was received warmly by his old friend Johann Bernoulli. On 27 July 1759, before his wife could reach him, he died and was buried in Dornach' (p. 188). Simson, 1500' Robert Simson was born on 18 October 1687. He was Professor of Mathematics at the University of Glasgow from 1711 until 1761 and made a significant contribution to mathematical scholarship; his interest in early Greek geometers proved particularly influential. Simson's definitive edition of Euclid's Elements, first published in 1756 in Latin. This work contained only the first six and the eleventh and twelfth books. It became the standard text in England and, along with the Conic Sections, was produced in many editions, some posthumously. It was also translated into several languages. .

Les Reveries ou Memoires sur l'Art de la Guerre

The Hague, Pierre Gosse, Junior, , 1756. Dediés a Messieurs les Officiers Generaux par M. de Bonneville, Capitaine Ingenieur de Campagne de sa Majesté le Roi de Prusse. Folio (375 × 245 mm). Contemporary sprinkled calf, raised bands, gilt sun-in-splendour tools within palm branches to the compartments, red morocco label, blue sprinkled edges. Fine large engraved trophy vignette to the title page, similar head- and tailpieces throughout, 40 engraved plates, 18 of them double-page, 4 double-page, folding. From the Macclesfield library at Shirburn Castle, with the blindstamp through the prelims and bookplates to the front endpapers of each volume, that on the pastedown being that of Lieutenant-General George Lane Parker, younger son of the second Earl. Lightly browned and occasional spots of foxing, but overall a very handsome copy, spine a little dry and some rubbing to the boards, head-cap chipped. First Edition, surprisingly uncommon, three copies only on COPAC. "De Saxe's work is a comprehensive treatise on war. He puts forward his ideal military model, his "legion", and taking issue with the views and practices of his age, he advances many original ideas. However, rather than discussing his military doctrines, the aim of this book is to elucidate the intellectual premises that dominated his mind: he saw a need to subject military affairs to reasoned criticism and intellectual treatment, and the ensuing military doctrines were perceived as forming a definitive system" (Gat, The Origins of Military Thought, p.33). Carlyle described it as a "strange military farrago, dictated, as I should think, under opium", which is perhaps not entirely as unfair as it may seem, a note on the original MS at Dresden reads, "I composed this work in Thirteen nights: I was ill, therefore, it may perhaps bear marks of the fever which I had. This ought to excuse the regularity of the arrangement, as also the elegance of style. I wrote in a military manner and to kill time." Whatever the oddness of its style the Reveries... was immensely influential, reprinted three times in 1757 and again in 1761 and 1763, German editions of 1757 and 1767 and English of 1757, 1759 and 1776. The Macclesfield copy, with the bookplate of George Lane Parker, who served for more than twenty years in the 1st Foot Guards. In 1773 at rank of Major-General he was appointed Colonel of the 20th Foot and saw service in the War of Independence. One of his contributions to the Shirburn Castle library was a remarkable collection of books detailing the professional interests of a soldier in the latter part of the 18th century, most of the copies, as here, are large margined, handsomely bound and in a wonderful state of preservation, the folding maps and plates so fresh as to actually resist opening.

        Don Quixote de la Mancha.

      J. and R. Tonson and S. Draper, London 1756 - Folios, 2 volumes. Bound in half leather over marbled boards, gilt titles to the spine. Illustrated with frontispiece and 68 consecutive numbered plates, engraved by Gerhard Vandergucht. In near fine condition. Translated by Charles Jarvis. An excellent set. Don Quixote tells the tale of a man so entranced by reading about the chivalrous romantic ideals touted in books that he decides to take up his sword and become a knight-errant himself, with the aims of defending the helpless and warding off the wicked. With his somewhat confused laborer-turned-squire, Sancho Panza, they roam the world together and have adventures that have haunted reader's imaginations for nearly four hundred years. Don Quixote is generally recognized as the first modern novel. Over those years, it has had an incredible influence on thousands of writers, from Dickens to Faulkner, who once said he reread it once a year, "just as some people read the Bible". Vladamir Nabokov is quoted as saying, "Don Quixote is greater today than he was in Cervantes's womb. [He] looms so wonderfully above the skyline of literature, a gaunt giant on a lean nag, that the book lives and will live through [his] sheer vitality. He stands for everything that is gentle, forlorn, pure, unselfish, and gallant. The parody has become a paragon." [Attributes: Hard Cover]

With Several Political Reflections; And Thoughts ON Public Love. In Twenty-Five Letters to the same Ladies. By a gentleman of the partie

Printed by H. Woodfall, London 1756 - First Edition. 4to; [6], 201, [5], 203-361, [1]pp, with an engraved frontispiece and an engraved plate opposite the divisional title to the Essay on Tea, both by Thomas Major after Samuel Wale. Modern quarter-calf over plain paper-covered boards, the flat spine in six compartments between decorative gilt bands, with a red morocco gilt lettering piece to the second compartment; all edges stained red, end papers renewed. Title page and preliminaries lightly foxed, but the contents otherwise clean and bright, the binding tight and firm. A splendid, wide-margined copy offered at an attractive price. ESTC Citation No. T127188. Gibson's Library, p. 144. Hanway was both a widely traveled merchant, with connections to the Russia Company, and a philanthropist, whose causes included foundlings, prostitutes and the climbing apprentices of chimney sweeps. His mother's death, in 1755, prompted him to return to Portsmouth where she was buried, the brief trip that served as inspiration for this, his second book, to which he appended An Essay on Tea. In the book's main part, Hanway describes many of the places he visited (including Salisbury, with its great cathedral, and Stonehenge), with digressions on tombstones, sacred music and oratorios, divine poetry, temperance, lap-dogs, false grief, the ruling passion of women, and much else. His Essay on Tea indicts the beverage for causing everything from insomnia, weak nerves, and scurvy to bad teeth, and proposes 'Herbs of our own growth in lieu of tea.' Both works, but especially the latter, led to a literary skirmish with Oliver Goldsmith, Samuel Johnson, and other ardent tea-drinkers. Regarding A journal of eight days journey from Portsmouth to Kingston upon Thames, Johnson claimed that Hanway had ‘acquired some reputation by traveling abroad, but lost it all by traveling at home'. And though Hanway was largely right about the adulterated beverage that passed for tea in the mid-eighteenth century, Johnson lambasted Hanway's views in both the Literary Magazine and the Idler, where Hanway appears as Dick Wormwood, a man whose sole delight is to find everything wrong.

Wroth & Annan, Acts of French Royal Administration, 1550. ONE COPY ONLY LOCATED IN A CANADIAN LIBRARY. France’s response to the English declaration of war. Louis XV writes a strong defense of France’s position in North America. A superb collection of military commissions and other documents signed by four different Massachusetts colonial governors related to the military service of Thomas Turner Sr. and his son Thomas Turner, Jr. during the French and Indian War and the American Revolution

An archive of eight partly-printed documents dating between 1756 and 1772 concerning Thomas Turner (1711-1795), a captain in the Pembroke, Massachusetts militia and his son, Thomas Turner, Jr. (1735-1808), also a member of the Pembroke militia. Signatories include four Royal Governors of Massachusetts including William Shirley (1694-1771), Francis Bernard (1712-1779), Thomas Pownall (1722-1805), and Thomas Hutchinson (1711-1780). Two of the documents are countersigned by Andrew Oliver (1706-1774), who later became notorious for his appointment (at Benjamin Franklin's recommendation) stamp agent for Massachusetts in 1764. The elder Turner served as a captain of the Pembroke militia during the French and Indian War and likely marched with Amherst in the capture of Montreal in 1760. At the outbreak of the American Revolution, Turner's son, by then also a militia captain, led his men on the Lexington Alarm of April 19, 1775. Turner, Jr. also served at First and Second Saratoga. On the advantage of taking the mean of a number of observations, in practical astronomy. In: Philosophical Transactions 49 (1755), pp. 82-93. Whole number, 4to. [16], 444pp. Fold. plates, text illustrations. London: L. Davis & C. Reymers, 1756. 255 x 195 mm. (uncut & unopened). Quarter morocco, marbled boards in period style. Some dust-soiling and fraying to edges, but very good.

First Edition. Simpson's paper is considered a milestone in statistical inference, as well as the earliest formal treatment of any data-processing practice. Simpson was the first to attempt to prove mathematically that the mean result of several observations is nearer to the truth than any single observation (the law of large numbers). A key feature of his paper was that Simpson chose to focus "not on the observations themselves . . . but on the errors made in the observations, on the differences between the recorded observations and the actual position of the body being observed. . . . [This] was the critical step that was to open the door to an applicable quantification of uncertainty" (Stigler, Hist. Statistics, pp. 90-91; see also pp. 88-94).

"Simpson was the first to characterize the errors in observations as independent events, taking positive and negative values with equal probabilities, and the first to provide a mathematical expression for the probability that the error in the mean result will lie between assigned limits" (Todhunter, History of Probability, p. 309).

Also present in this volume are two important medical papers: Jonathan Wathen's "A method proposed to restore the hearing, when injured from an obstruction of the tuba Eustachiana" (G-M 3356), describing his method of relieving catarrhal deafness by injections into the Eustachian tube through a catheter passed into the nose; and John Machin's "An uncommon case of a distempered skin" (G-M 4013), containing the first known description of ichthyosis hystrix.

Veduta degli avanzi di mausolei e delle fabbriche sepolcrali sparse per la via Appia, cinque miglia in circa da Porta S. Sebastiano distante.

. [REMAINS OF FUNERARY STRUCTURES ALONG THE VIA APPIA ANTICA]. Copperprint. Rome 1756. 36x59 cm. Printed on strong paper with the watermark fleur - des - lis. Le antichita romane. * When Piranesi arrived in Rome in the year 1740 he was instantly impressed by the splendour of the antique ruins in the ancient city. For almost a year he was an apprentice in the studio of Guiseppe Vasi, his later colleague and rival, where he learned the art of engraving copper plates. He began his extremely successful career depicting Rome's architectural gems (antique and contemporary) on extra large-scale single sheets: the famous "Vedute di Roma" (Views of Rome). Piranesi was an obsessed artist. Relentlessly he added plates, sometimes variations of former ones, to the collection, until, at the end of his life, there was a total of 135 views showing the majesty and the splendour of the once powerful capital of the Roman empire. An excellent copy.ìIn some manner not yet accounted for, Mirabeau had obtained, and for many years retained, possession of the unpublished manuscript of Cantillonís Essai sur la Nature du Commerce en gÃ?nÃ?ral...[which was] published in 1755. The manuscript had made a deep impression on Mirabeau. At one time he seems to have intended to modify and publish it as its own. Subsequently he proceeded to write a running commentary upon the Essai, and it is the work thus commenced which appeared, subsequently to the publication of Cantillonís manuscript, under the title of LíAmi des Hommes, ou TraitÃ? de la population, in three parts, with the imprint â?¡ Avignon, 1756...This remarkable treatise created the greatest sensation throughout the whole of Europe. It is said to have gone through forty editions, and was translated into several languages. Its anonymous author, soon discovered, became the idol of the day, and was generally referred to by the sobriquet which he had chosen for the title of his book. The meridonal vivacity of his style, his wit, his naÃ?ve egotism, his piquant irony and frequent paradox gave him a great literary vogue, and led some of his readers to compare him to Montaigne; while the importance of his subject and the ability of his views, in turn original, daring, and profound, earned for him the more durable attention of those who cared rather for the matter than the style...its leading propositions are the following: Population is the source of wealth, and the means of subsistence are the measure of population. Agriculture is the great source of subsistence. A large population is desirable; and to this end the encouragement of agriculture is the means...Luxury, idleness, and public debts are to be reprobated...The influx from country to town should be counteracted and absenteeism should cease. Religious toleration, free tradeóinternal and external,óa more equal distribution of wealth, a diminution and more equitable partition of the burdens of taxation, are among the desiderata for the economic improvement of the countryî (Palgrave II, pp. 775-776).ìIn 1758 appeared a continuation of LíAmi des which the hand of Quesnay is plainly visible. It consists of a Dialogue entre le Surintendant díO. et L. D. H., a reprint of the MÃ?moire sur les â?¦tats provinciaux, with a reply to objections which had been published against it, and a series of, separately paged, Questions intÃ?ressantes sur la Population, líAgriculture, et le commerce proposÃ?es aux AcadÃ?mies et autres sociÃ?tÃ?s sÁavantes des Provinces, asking for local information upon agricultural conditions, and also suggesting some general considerations somewhat in the style of Berkeleyís Querist. These questions, the reader is informed, are not by the author of the MÃ?moire sur les â?¦tats provinciaux. In 1760 appeared the fifth and sixth partsî (Palgrave II, p. 776).Einaudi 3941.
