Tail library labels. 2 wormholes along the lower joint of Volume I. A hitch in the lower joint with lack of volume II. Good copy, decorative.Physiocratic seminal work of theses in economics, in which the author advocates greater use of agriculture. He developed many theories on population and trade, and finance and covers many areas, the use of settlements, the tobacco trade, the state of the clergy, noting that the laws in France and limit its extension its prosperity, that household taxes must be alleviated; all is not without many provocations, such as the use of church members as laborers, serving the cities beggars forcing them to work in agriculture, etc. Angel Goudar portrays a nation mired in tradition and unsuitable laws, bringing to every problem a simple solution. (3 parts).

Paris, L'Imprimerie Royale, 1756. 4to. Without wrappers. Extracted from "Mémoires de l'Academie des Sciences. Année 1752". Pp. 189-220, pp. 323-360, pp. 524-538. With 4 engraved plates and 2 folded engraved maps (1. Dressée par Philippe Buache... with the inset map of the Gulf of St. Lawrence,1752 (27x31 cm.). - 2. Carte Minéralogique de la Suisse par Philippe Buache... 1752. (26x 36 cm.)). Text, plates and maps clean and fine.. First printing of these two important geological maps, being among the first geological maps ever made. The first map is the first geological map of North America and the FIRST OF THE CONTINENT. The second is the first of Switzerland. The Mineralogic map of North America showing the nature of the terrains of Canada and Louisiana. In its production it is unclear whether Guettard visited North America, but most of his information was compiled from reports of French officers and contemporary French travellers such as Xavier de Charlevoix and F. Goutier. He found enough parallels with Europe to apply his system of three mineralogical bands to the new continent. The map provides primitive mineralogy indicating the location of belts of marl, clay, sands, schistose and metalliferous materials. Different signs and annotations are used to locate rocks and minerals between the Atlantic Coast and the Rocky Mountains. This map, drawn by Philippe Buache, is also of interest for it's inclusion of the cartographic curiosity "Mer de L'Ouest" (Sea of the West) which is shown as occupying part of western Canada

He entered the Society of Jesus, studying humanities and philosophy until he left the order in 1736. In 1741 he became private tutor to the young Duke of Bouillon (Prince of Turenne at the time). There followed public functions that saw him in attendance at some battles of the War of the Austrian Succession (1740-48). His many works include a history of the Polish king Jan Sobieski, travel accounts of Holland and Italy, a study of ancient religions, belles-lettres, and a popular attack on the guild system, Chinki. He became a member of the Royal Academy of England and the Academy of Nancy. It is said that when he visited Voltaire at Ferney and announced his desire to return each year for three months, Voltaire replied that whereas Don Quixote had mistaken inns for castles, Coyer was mistaking castles for inns. He died in 1782. (See Henry C. Clarke: "Commerce, Culture, and Liberty: Readings on Capitalism before Adam Smith", Indianapolis, 2003.)

GRAVURA SÉC. XVIII ? MILITÁRIA ? POSIÇÃO DE ARTILHARIA DE LIPPE.

      - Guerra dos Sete Anos (1756-1763). Quartel General. 1762.

Clarke: "Commerce, Culture, and Liberty: Readings on Capitalism before Adam Smith", Indianapolis, 2003.).

Full brown calf glossy marbled time. Back to nerves decorated with 5 large florets. Part of title in red morocco. Tail headdress threadbare. Jolie binding, the unusual iron. The dispute over the military nobility and shopping was originally launched by the work of the Abbe Coyer who committed the nobility to engage in trade, this first book was followed by answers, objections and pamphlets throughout the year 1756. Our copy includes three essays related to this controversy. We know that the nobility was primarily military, trade was long considered the work of the lower classes. The work of the Abbe Coyer had the effect of a bomb, the contrary argument of old nobility was defended by the knight Arq. The first two tests trying to find a reasonable solution to this dilemma by examining the principles and theories of the two opposing ideas. The last test is a satirical tone in praise of idleness and taking against the current all the controversy on the functions of the nobility. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate.

S.l.: S.n., 1756. Fine. S.n., S.l. 1756, In 12 (9x16,2cm), (2) xxiv, 212pp., relié. - First edition, rare. Half morocco modern cherry. Confusing pastiche of a binding Restoration. Back with false nerves decorated boards five irons cold, gilt; roulette tail and head. Very nice copy. Important document about the history of Canada and the United States, the book begins by questioning the causes of conflict between Britain and France on the territory of Ohio. Indeed, in 1756, the beginning of the 7 years war, or Indian War, war of conquest as a legitimate occupation of the territories; this war would spread to Virginia and Nova Scotia all the lakes in Canada, some Indians fought alongside the English, other than those of French. Shebbeare returns to defeat England on the bad policy and general presence in Canada, the intervention of the American militia and Washington. The author roundly accused the British government (kings and ministers) to have failed in protecting the British colonies in America and predicted the ruin of England, citing examples the urge to bad policy in Canada . In addition to this charge, the author examines the situation of England in Europe, the treaty with Russia, the difficulties with the House of Hanover and France accuses his country again to be scuttled by disastrous political decisions. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate.

A twenty-four year old Colonel George Washington, as the recently-appointed Commander-in-Chief of Virginia Colonial forces, shores up frontier defenses against French and Indian raids

[Winchester, Virginia], July 21, 1756. 7.25" x 12.5". "Important Manuscript Document Signed, ""Go: Washington,"" 2 pages, 7.25"" x 12.25"", Winchester, July 21, 1756, entitled, ""Instructions for Capt Peter Hoge of the Virginia Regiment,"" providing detailed instructions concerning the construction of a series of small blockhouses and forts on the Virginia frontier designed to protect settlers from attacks from French-allied Indians following the debacle of Braddock's expedition against Fort Duquesne the previous summer. Fold separations expertly repaired, light soiling and toning, marginal loss not affecting text at left infilled, else very good.Although the spectacular defeat of General Braddock's expedition in 1755 heaped great dishonor on many involved, the young George Washington, in his capacity as aide-de-camp to the slain British general, escaped much of the blame, and was instead offered a commission as Colonel of the Virginia Regiment and Commander-in-Chief of all the colony's forces. Although a tremendous honor for the young officer, Washington was in a particularly unenviable position, forced to contend with supply and discipline problems, as well as distant politicians. British officers and officials far removed were in charge of decision-making, and one of the chief obstacles he faced was a lack of cooperation from regular British troops, who refused to accept the colonial militiamen as equals. Although in one respect this haughty British attitude toward their provincial cousins was born of simple prejudice, Washington too found the militia wanting, who on too many occasions ""had proved worse than useless ..."" (Freeman, 2:119) During the Revolutionary War, Washington would again face the task of transforming raw militia into a professional army, and this experience would prove invaluable in his education as an officer. As a means of reinforcing the sparsely-populated frontier, the Virginia House of Burgesses authorized the constriction of a string of small forts and blockhouses, spaced approximately twenty to thirty miles apart running along the Blue Ridge Mountains from the North Carolina to the Maryland borders. In obedience with the Virginia legislators' wishes, Washington issued extremely detailed instructions to Captain Peter Hog, that read, in full [with period spellings retained with minimal comment]: ""As The Assembly has voted a chain of Forts to be built on the Frontiers, The Governor ahs order[e]d out the Militia of Augusta to assist you in erecting them, and it was determin'd in a Council of War held at Fort Cumberland agreeable to the Governors orders that you should have the care of constructing them ?" 'And that you should receive directions to Build at or about 20 or 30 miles distance, as the situation of the Country requires or Ground will permit, and to have particular regard to the Body of Inhabitants to be defended, and the passes, most frequented by the Enemy ?" And that Capt. Hoge begin to guild, observing the above considerations to the Southward of Fort Dinwiddie extending the Line towards Mayo River as directed by the Assembly. You are therefore as soon as possible to proceed to Augusta Courthouse and Consult with the Commanding officers and others of that County, and fall upon the most expeditious Method to raise the Militia, with which and your own Company, except about 30 private[s]n w[hi]c[h] you are to leave under the Command of Lt Bullet, at Fort Dinwiddie[,] and set im[m]ediately upon that Duty taking care In[?] to observe the orders herew[i]th sent you by his Honor The Governor?"and to draft the best Work Men to take with you. If you are apprehensive that the Enemy will an[n]oy you, and endeavour to obstruct your erecting these Forts?" You are first to proceed to the place which shall be judged most convenient for the defence of the Inhabitants and erect your first Fort there ?" if not?"proceed as first directed?" You are, while upon this Work to keep out constant covering parties, and above all things guard against a Suprize?" I have sent you herewith [not present] a plan of the kind of forts you are to build, which you must follow exactly?" The Men drafted from your Company for this com[m]and will receive double pay for every day they work, w[hi]c[h] you are to exact in taking Account of ?" tis the Same that[']s allowed the Soldiers here how work ?" And the Militia will receive 6d extra for every day they work ?" Both Soldiers & Militia here are contented w[i]t[h] this Allowance. I hope your own Company with the Addition of the Militia, will be of Sufficient force to Conduct this Work; but lest dividing your Men may Subject your separated partys to the insults of the Enemy, I wou[l]d have you keep in a Body and Build Fort after Fort, leaving Garrisons in them from 15 to 30 Men under Com[m]and of a Sub[altern] or Trusty Sergeant?" As the Difficulty of getting tools in these parts is not easily to be conceived, I would advise you to pursue the same Methods in Augusta that I have done here Vizt. to get of the Inhabitants, giving receipts for the Quantity, and Sorts of each, and paying for the sue?"also the Damage & Loss, if any is sustain'd?" but to buy would be best if this you can do, take particular care of the whole you receive.""From the outset, Washington had held little hope that the Assembly?s call for the erection of a chain of forts would provide real protection for the frontier, but he was not in a position to oppose their will. (Washington would display a similar obedience to The Continental Congress during the Revolutionary War, even when he disagreed with their decisions). In a letter written to Dinwiddie on April 7, he observed that ?this expedient, in my opinion, will never, without an inconceivable number of men, answer their expectations.? On June 25, he wrote Dinwiddie again, noting the scarcity of both men and tools. Washington proposed increasing the troops available for fort construction by placing the Augusta militia under Hoge?s command. The governor approved the plan, and by the autumn of 1756, 17 forts were in place, garrisoned by some 2,000 regulars and militiamen. Washington continued to question the effectiveness of the forts, for as detailed in a report to the governor on November 9, they were still undermanned, and the troops there were characterized by ?indolence and irregularity. None I saw in a posture of defence, and few that might not be surprized with the greatest ease.? The quality of Hog?s leadership created more problems. On July 24, 1757, just a year after the present letter, Washington relieved Hog of command, noting the ?great complaints made concerning your manner of carrying on the works at the Fort you are building. It has cost infinitely more money than ever was intended for it. and, by the injudicious spot of ground you have chosen to fix it upon, it has caused a general clamour.? When Dinwiddie subsequently made Hog captain of a company of rangers, Washington argued that he was ?the most unfit person in the world ... is generally disliked [and] ... has neither activity, spirit, or knowledge enough of the woods? (Washington to Dinwiddie, Oct. 24, 1757). Late in 1757, dysentery forced Washington to return home, but his health improved enough for him to join in the spring 1758. Later that year he joined the march on Fort Duquesne. The experience disillusioned him, and ruined his relationship with British military officers, whose ranks he once so desired to join. In 1758 the British finally captured the strategic forks of the Ohio River bringing peace to the frontier. Washington returned to civilian life in 1759 still feeling slighted by the Crown. He turned instead to politics, and was elected to the House of Burgesses until 1774. Ironically, Washington?s tenure as American commander was plagued by many of the same problems that he experienced in the Virginia Regiment: insufficient troops, poor supply, erratic pay, challenges to his authority, and a sometimes interfering civilian government. His earlier service no doubt provided him vast experience for his Revolutionary challenges.Captain Peter Hog (Hoge, Hogg; pronounced HOGUE) (1703-1782). The Scottish native immigrated to Virginia along with his brothers Thomas and James in 1745. He was commissioned a captain in the militia by Governor Dinwiddie in 1754 and served under George Washington, whom he accompanied on the expedition ending in the surrender of Fort Necessity. Hog was left in charge of a company protecting the Wills Creek camp when Braddock went west from Winchester, and was not present for the latter?s defeat. After Washington relieved Hog of command in 1757, Dinwiddie made him a captain in a company of Rangers.         La revue des feuilles de Mr Freron EDITION ORIGINALE

A Londres: S.n., 1756. Fine. S.n., A Londres 1756, 2 parties en un Vol. in 12, viij, 3-140 121-406p., relié. - First edition, rare. The second part is entitled to: Analysis of some great philosophical works, preceded Reflections on criticism. Full glossy blond marbled calf contemporary. Smooth back decorated. Part of title in red morocco. Triple Net framework on boards and weapons struck large centers. Very nice copy. the second part has its own title page, as well as its half-title. The arms of the Princess Line, Henriette-Anne-Eugénie de Mézières Bethizy, wife of Prince Line (Claude Lamoral Hyacinthe Ferdinand, Marquis de Moy and Dormans). Olivier I, pl. 15: two crowns fused: I, large parts of Lorraine; on all party at 1 gold band Gules (Line); at 2, simple Lorraine; II, azure fretted gold six parts (Bethizy). It should be noted that female weapons are usually much rarer than male. The literary journal Freron (declared enemy of the party and philodophes main target of Voltaire) had considerable success since its inception in 1754, it still seemed as sheets, later forming volumes. LE PREVOST D'EXMES establishes a critical rule in périodiste Freron and the Literary Review. Freron vilified not only philosophers but the literature of his time. The second, more philosophical advocate for philosophers and the work of several authors as Diderot and Rousseau. Behind the criticism of the company Freron, reveals an ethics of writing and criticism. The work is composed in the form of letters to a lady in London. A useful table of contents allows you to find the themes and ideas discussed and the authors. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate. Contact us for any information! - [FRENCH VERSION FOLLOWS] Edition originale, rare.

[Madrid. 1756].. [2]pp. plus integral blank leaf. Maltese cross at head of title. Folio. Dbd. Contemporary manuscript annotation in ink and later pencil annotation on first page. Accomplished in manuscript at Buen Retiro, Spain on Feb. 13, 1756, signed by Joachim Joseph Vazquez y Morales, with additional manuscript annotations. Manuscript inscriptions on recto and verso of integral blank leaf. Extremely light dampstaining in margins, occasional minor soiling. A very good copy. A rare broadsheet proclamation by Ferdinand VI, King of Spain, confirming that the law, recorded earlier in the RECOPILACION DE LAS INDIAS, outlining the method of reviewing the administration and recording the accounts of the hospitals in the New World maintained by the religious order of St. John of God is to be observed in a precise and punctual manner. The Hospital Brothers of St. John of God were present in America, most notably New Spain and Peru, beginning in the early 17th century. Following the initial 16th-century wave of evangelization represented by the Franciscans, Dominicans, Augustinians, Mercedarians, and Jesuits, the Hospital Brothers was one "of another group of orders, of varying characteristics but largely devoted to caring for the sick and the destitute in the cities. Their very existence attested the new needs of an increasingly complex colonial society" (CAMBRIDGE HISTORY OF LATIN AMERICA). This copy, accomplished in manuscript in Buen Retiro on Feb. 13, 1756, is signed by Joachim Joseph Vazquez y Morales as representative of the King of Spain with the inscription, "Yo El Rey," and the annotation, "Por mand[a]do del Rey." Manuscript inscriptions on the recto and verso of the integral blank leaf attest to the document being reviewed by the Spanish colonial government in Santiago de Chile in 1757. A rare proclamation concerning the work of the Hospital Brothers of St. John of God in the New World. Not in Medina BHA or Palau, nor on OCLC. CAMBRIDGE HISTORY OF LATIN AMERICA I, pp.519- 20.

Lacking two addenda, one 8-page and one 4-page, which seem to be present in some copies. The engraved frontispiece depicts an art auction in progress and is engraved by Huquier after Baudoin. "In mid-eighteenth century France the level of connoisseurship in art, and in the art market in general, including the rare book trade, made significant advances. A significant landmark was the publication of the Edmé-François Gersaint, P.-C.- A. Helle, and and Jean-Baptiste Glomy catalogue raisonnée of the works of Rembrandt (1752), the first significant catalogue raisonnée in Western art history. As a result of this growing connoisseurship, and perhaps also as a result of Glomy's experience in editing the Rembrandt catalogue raisonnée, in 1756 commissaires-priseurs Jean-Baptiste Glomy (172?-1786) and Pierre Rémy (1715?-1797?) issued an auction catalogue that reflected a new level of scholarship and sophistication. In the auction catalogue of the sale in Paris of the paintings, sculpture in bronze, sculpture in marble, drawings, prints, porcelain, and furniture collected by Camille d'Hostun, Duc de Tallard, which they called a catalogue raisonnée, the auctionners authoritatively attributed works of art to a specific artist or workshop based on their own expertise. Prior to this catalogue descriptions of paintings in auction catalogues were vague, and often identified only by school, with little distinction made between originals and copies." (Jeremy Norman at HistoryofInformation.com). Torben Holck Colding (1918-98) was a Danish art historian
