Veduta degli Avanzi delle Case de Cesari sul Palatino...

1756. Acquaforte e bulino, 1756 circa, firmata in lastra in basso a destra. "Etching, from the first edition, third issue, of ""Le Antichità Romane. The first edition of this work, in four volumes, was published in Rome in 1756 at the printing - works of Angelo Rotili at the Massimo alle Colonne Palace, by Bouchard and Gravier, book - dealers and tradesmen located in Rome near the church of St. Marcel at the Via del Corso. This collection included a portrait of Piranesi, engraved by Felice Porziani, and a dedication to James Caulfield, count of Charlemont. This dedication was later abolished in the aftermath of a quarrel, described by Piranesi in his Lettere di Giustificazione [Letters of Justification] (1757), which also gave rise to three different versions of this first original edition (May 1756). These different versions are distinguishable from the title - page of the first volume, which initially was dedicated to the Irish aristocrat, then exhibited a cancelled dedication and coat of arms and, finally, bore a Latin motto written by the artist ""Aevo Suo Posteri set Utilitari Publicae"". Henry Focillon, in his 1918 treatise, presumed that Piranesi prepared and engraved the plates for this collection between 1750 and 1756, although some architectural features could have a few of them dating back to 1746. Actually, the oldest plates included in this collection probably date back even further, as suggested by the extraordinary complexity of this work, due to a prolonged phase of preparation and research, together with the stylistic alterations which can be observed by comparing the different plates. The magnificence of Piranesi's Antichità Romane, however, is not only in the artist's large graphic output. Indeed, this work is of primary importance from the standpoint of methodological innovation within the framework of contemporary archaeology, with the utilisation of texts which are of essential importance for the comprehension of the author's ideas and of the innovations implied in Piranesi's methodology. It can be asserted, as correctly emphasised by Focillon, that the Venetian architect founded modern archaeology. However, this new - fashioned approach implied an important disassociation and a significant deviation from the convictions and the official and academic culture of the time, which was of Anglo - Saxon derivation. This gave rise to a serious controversy, whose target was Piranesi, and to an adverse anecdotal literature concerning his person, the objective being the re - establishment of the endangered authority of the culture it was threatening. The main motivation behind the Antichità Romane was the documentation and preservation, utilising illustrations, of a heritage of ancient monuments which was being ravaged on a daily basis. This approach was incompatible with the one held by amateurs and antiquarians who only took pleasure from aesthetic contemplation and would not refrain from occasionally removing rather imposing parts from ancient relics for their private collections or, more simply, as souvenirs. The main new feature in his procedure was to unify into a single space the acts of excavating, surveying, structural inquiries and measurement together with the analysis of literary sources, the latter of which he examined for himself. This step of unification is characterised by the study of topography which, together with surveying techniques, the knowledge of antique procedures and materials, excavations and on - site inspections, gave rise to archaeology, in other words to the study of ancient history. Therefore, the four volumes comprised in this collection are the central nucleus, the fulcrum around which all of Piranesi's activity revolved, constituting the accomplishment and focal point of a method of inquiry and comprehension of the ancient city of Rome and, at the same time, the starting point for analogous and complementary works, which can be considered as additional proofs of his interpretation. Consequently, the Antichità can be regarded as an attempt to furnish a unified account of the city from its foundation up to the times of the last emperors, identifying monuments, areas and spaces, set side by side with prosaic and common aspects of the city, such as bridges and streets, which help to bestow it with an animated and vibrating atmosphere." "A topographical map of Rome depicting the paths of the ancient aqueducts. The inscription ""Dichiarazione delle note della Tavola"", explains the contents that include named walls of Rome and subterranean aqueducts as well as identifying footprints of ancient remains. This is the plate XXXVIII of tome I of Antichità Romane, first edition by the French publisher Bouchard and Gravier in 1756.         Catalogus Codicum Manuscriptorum qui in Bibliotheca Riccardiana Florentiae adservantur

in quo multa Opuscula anecdota in lucem passim proferuntur et plura ad Historiam litterariam locupletandam inlustrandamque idonea, antea ignota exhibentur Jo. Lamio. Engraved frontis., engraved vignette on title, & one engraved plate (reproducing specimens of handwriting). xxvi, [2], 436 pp. Folio, cont. vellum over boards. Liburni: A. Sanctini, 1756. The collections of early books, manuscripts, and works of art in the Biblioteca Riccardiana of Florence were begun in the 16th century by Riccardo Romolo Riccardi. In the last decades of the 17th century it was significantly enlarged by Francesco Riccardi, partially as a result of the dowry of his wife, Cassandra Capponi. Her father Vincenzio, an erudite and famous man of letters and science closely connected with the circle of Galileo, had left his daughter part of his extensive library of scientific and philosophical texts. The collections were housed in the magnificent palazzo in Via Larga (today Via Cavour), which was purchased from the Medicis in 1659, and is today known as the Palazzo Medici Riccardi. The Riccardi family was unusual in that they allowed the public to use the library throughout most of the 18th century. The present catalogue, prepared by Giovanni Lami (1697-1770), the famous librarian and antiquarian, describes about 3000 medieval and Renaissance manuscripts. This was one of the finest collections of early manuscripts in private hands at the time. It included many splendid illuminated and text manuscripts as well as autograph manuscripts by Petrarch, Boccaccio, Savonarola and of the greatest humanists including Alberti, Ficino, Poliziano and Pico della Mirandola. Fine copy. Bookplate A.R.A. Hobson. With a note on front paste-down endpaper: "Coll & perf: FCB. May. 1850." This was Francis Capper Brooke (1810-86). ❧ Nicolini 22.       8vo., 112pp., with a whole-page figure on p.105, bound in 19th century German half calf over mottled boards, spine gilt, labelled and lettered. A fine copy. The world's first bio-bibliography of earthquakes and seismology. Christoph Gottlob Grundig (born September 5, 1707; died August 9, 1780) was a German Protestant theologian, mineralogist and publicist. His interest in mineralogy had been nurtured when he was at school in Freiberg under Bergrat Johann Friedrich Henckel. From 1737 he held the post of evangelical pastor in Hermann village where he married and raised a family. From 1747 he edited a monthly magazine on the natural history and art history of Upper Saxony. Following his move to become senior pastor at Schneeberg in 1749, and following the dramatic Lisbon earthquake of 1755, Grundig gained particular credit for this, the world's first seismological bibliography. When he died in August 1780 his estate included a large library and a comprehensive collection of some 3300 specimens of minerals.

        TRIUMPHO DA RELIGIAÕ.

      - Poema Epico-Polemico; que A? SANTIDADE DO PAPA BENEDICTO XIV. DEDICA FRANCISCO DE PINA E DE MELLO, Moço Fidalgo da Casa de Sua Magestade, e Academico da Academia Real da Historia Portugueza. COIMBRA: Na Officina de ANTONIO SIMOENS FERREYRA, Impressor da Universidade, Anno de 1756. In 8º (20,5x14,5 cm) com [24], lv, [i], 331 pags. Five engraved plates (one a map, several folding). First edition of this monumental but unfinished description of the most notable antiquities (including runes, etc.), buildings, and topographical features of Denmark. Thurah (1706-59), following his retirement about 1750, planned a great survey of Denmark but died before he could finish. These volumes, all that were published of the survey, are concerned with the Danish islands Bornholm, Christiansoe, Amager, Saltholm, and Samsoe. Thurah was "the most significant representative of late baroque architecture in Denmark...after cadet studies in Copenhagen, he received instruction as an officer and military engineer in 1725-1727, studies that also embraced architectural training. Travels to Germany Italy, France, Holland and England further broadened his horizons. Shortly after his return to Denmark, he received the appointment of royal architect and went on to enjoy a distinguished and prolific architectural career."-Beasley et al., Millard Architectural Collection, Volume III, Northern European Books, pp. 38-39. An uncommonly fine copy in a most handsome "mirror" binding which was a popular style in Denmark in the 18th century. The folding map in the second volume has a tear carefully repaired. Rare when complete. .

British education: or, the source of the disorders of Great Britain. Being an essay towards proving, that the immorality, ignorance, and false taste, which so generally prevail, are the natural and necessary consequences of the present defective system of education. With an attempt to shew, that a revival of the art of speaking, and the study of our own language, might contribute, in a great measure, to the cure of those evils. In three parts. I. Of the use of these studies to religion, and morality; as also, to the support of the British constitution. II. Their absolute necessity in order to refine, ascertain, and fix the English language. III. their use in the cultivation of the imitative arts: shewing, that were the study of oratory made a necessary branch of the education of youth; poetry, musick, painting, and sculpture, might arrive at as high a pitch of perfection in England, as ever they did in Athens or Rome.

London: R., and J. Dodsley, 1756. 8vo., xl + 536pp., endpapers foxed, title and final leaf a little browned, contemporary calf, professionally rebacked to match, spine with raised bands and gilt lines, the old label re-used. A good copy with the late 18th or early 19th century armorial bookplate of the Kerr family, with Mary Kerr's signature, dated 1800, >at head of title. First edition. Alston X, 221. 'A treatise of fundamental importance for the history of English studies and the teaching of English, discussing all aspects of language-study, including grammar, rhetoric and elocution'. [Alston] Thomas Sheridan's father had, it is said, always wanted his son to be a school master as he was. But much of the younger Thomas Sheridan's life - until he was approaching 40 - was spent acting or theatre managing in Dublin and London. The latter part of his life was devoted to teaching and lecturing on elocution. He fell out with Samuel Johnson over pensions, Johnson finally damning Sheridan as 'dull, naturally dull'.

"Articles of Agreement to Establish a Quarterly Meeting of the Attornies [sic] in the City of New York and for Setting the Sum to be Received by Them for All Business in the Profession" [Running Title]. New York, November 26, 1756. 12" x 7-1/4" leaf, text on recto, some signatures on verso. Light browning and moderate edgewear, careful recent repairs to tears. * In this 1756 document, 15 New York lawyers agree to meet regularly and appoint "a Committee for drawing a plan" for uniform fees and regulations. This was certainly a precursor to formal bar associations, which were not established until the late nineteenth century. James Duane, is named the first clerk of what is, in effect, a cartel of New York lawyers. It is signed by James Duane (mayor of New York, 1784-1789), William Livingston (signer of United States Constitution), William Smith, Jr. (author of the 1756 History of the Province of New-York and co-compiler with Livingston of The Laws of New York), John V. Cortlandt, Richard Morris, Benjamin Kissam, Whitehead Hicks (mayor of New York, 1766-1776), and eight others. The ability of lawyers to set fixed fees remained in force for over two centuries until declared unconstitutional by the U.S. Supreme Court in 1975's Goldfarb v. Virginia State Bar.
