La revue des feuilles de Mr. Freron

S.n.. First edition, rare. The second part is entitled to: Analysis of some great philosophical works, preceded Reflections on criticism. Full glossy blond marbled calf contemporary. Smooth back decorated. Part of title in red morocco. Triple Net framework on boards and weapons struck large centers. Very nice copy. the second part has its own title page, as well as its half-title. The arms of the Princess Line, Henriette-Anne-Eugénie de Mézières Bethizy, wife of Prince Line (Claude Lamoral Hyacinthe Ferdinand, Marquis de Moy and Dormans). Olivier I, pl. 15: two crowns fused: I, large parts of Lorraine; on all party at 1 gold band Gules (Line); at 2, simple Lorraine; II, azure fretted gold six parts (Bethizy). It should be noted that female weapons are usually much rarer than male. The literary journal Freron (declared enemy of the party and philodophes main target of Voltaire) had considerable success since its inception in 1754, it still seemed as sheets, later forming volumes. LE PREVOST D'EXMES establishes a critical rule in périodiste Freron and the Literary Review. Freron vilified not only philosophers but the literature of his time. The second, more philosophical advocate for philosophers and the work of several authors as Diderot and Rousseau. Behind the criticism of the company Freron, reveals an ethics of writing and criticism. The work is composed in the form of letters to a lady in London. A useful table of contents allows you to find the themes and ideas discussed and the authors. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate. With Several Political Reflections; And Thoughts ON Public Love. In Twenty-Five Letters to the same Ladies. By a gentleman of the partie

First Edition London Printed by H. Woodfall 1756 First Edition. 4to; [6], 201, [5], 203-361, [1]pp, with an engraved frontispiece and an engraved plate opposite the divisional title to the Essay on Tea, both by Thomas Major after Samuel Wale. Modern quarter-calf over plain paper-covered boards, the flat spine in six compartments between decorative gilt bands, with a red morocco gilt lettering piece to the second compartment; all edges stained red, end papers renewed. Title page and preliminaries lightly foxed, but the contents otherwise clean and bright, the binding tight and firm. A splendid, wide-margined copy offered at an attractive price. ESTC Citation No. T127188. Gibson's Library, p. 144. Very GoodHanway was both a widely traveled merchant, with connections to the Russia Company, and a philanthropist, whose causes included foundlings, prostitutes and the climbing apprentices of chimney sweeps. His mother's death, in 1755, prompted him to return to Portsmouth where she was buried, the brief trip that served as inspiration for this, his second book, to which he appended An Essay on Tea. In the book's main part, Hanway describes many of the places he visited (including Salisbury, with its great cathedral, and Stonehenge), with digressions on tombstones, sacred music and oratorios, divine poetry, temperance, lap-dogs, false grief, the ruling passion of women, and much else. His Essay on Tea indicts the beverage for causing everything from insomnia, weak nerves, and scurvy to bad teeth, and proposes 'Herbs of our own growth in lieu of tea.' Both works, but especially the latter, led to a literary skirmish with Oliver Goldsmith, Samuel Johnson, and other ardent tea-drinkers. Regarding A journal of eight days journey from Portsmouth to Kingston upon Thames, Johnson claimed that Hanway had 'acquired some reputation by traveling abroad, but lost it all by traveling at home'. And though Hanway was largely right about the adulterated beverage that passed for tea in the mid-eighteenth century, Johnson lambasted Hanway's views in both the Literary Magazine and the Idler, where Hanway appears as Dick Wormwood, a man whose sole delight is to find everything wrong.

Paris: Desaint & Saillant, Durand, 1756. Octavo, engraved frontispiece portrait by Tardieu le fils, and 10 engraved plates by Chedel, engraved titlepage vignette, headpiece to dedication leaf and tailpieces at end of each canto; a very attractive copy in contemporary French mottled calf, spine gilt, crimson morocco label. First edition, rare: "an epic poem on the discovery of America" (Sabin). This attractive work contains many beautifully-executed plates, including scenes depicting Columbus' landing in the New World, his introduction to the American court, and a vivid shipwreck. Although the work is very much the product of Du Boccage's agile pen, she shows that she is also familiar with the voyage accounts of Anson and Frezier, among a litany of erudite notes.Madame du Boccage (Marie-Anne Le Page) ran a distinguished salon in Paris, frequented by Voltaire, Fontenelle, and other luminaries. Together with her husband, Pierre-Joseph Fiquet du Boccage, she had a passionate interest in literature, and published several interesting works, including imitations of Milton and Pope. Le Colombiade is her greatest contribution, a poised revisiting of the moment of contact between Columbus and the indigenous Americans. The work picks up Colombus as he meets a thoughtful leader of an Indian nation, who asks who he is and why he is there. "Columbus replies in astonishing detail, telling his auditor of 'the three continents which form the universe', of the Supreme Being, of European manners and inventions, of his project, of Queen Isabella, of scurvy, of strange 'phenomena' of the sea, and of unrest among the sailors. 'Merveilleux Etranger,' exclaims the chief, no doubt overwhelmed by the barrage of heroic couplets. After many adventures a prayerful Columbus is visited by a tutelary angel who reveals the vast consequences of his enterprise." (Terence Martin, 'American Literature Discovers Columbus', in Christopher K. Lohmann, Discovering Difference, Indiana, 1993, p. 25).Throughout, there is an emphasis on the national and European consequences of New World discovery, and the poem is, in a sense, a companion piece to her earlier play Les Amazones (1749), in that much of the American authority is vested in the figure of a powerful woman.A second edition was published in 1758, but included only 8 plates.

Principes mathématiques de la philosophie naturelle.

Paris, Desaint & Saillant, Lambert, 1756. (Avertissement). Cohen, The French translation of Isaac Newton's Philosophiae..., Archives internationales des sciences 21, 1968. ***** First and sole French translation of Newton's "Principia". FIRST ISSUE. One of the very rare copies with both titles dated 1756, about 12 copies are known with this title page. This 1756 edition was presumably issued in a very small number of copies and then quickly withdrawn on account of its imperfections. The Cotes preface is present. Second state of the "Avertissement". "Known throughout intellectual Europe as Emilie, the name popularized by Voltaire, Mme du Châtelet - beyond the influence she had for some fifteen years on the orientation of Voltaire's works and on his public activity - contributed to the vitality of French scientific life to the parallel diffusion of Newtonianism and Leibnizian epistemology. Her affairs entertained the faishionable world of her period, yet her last moments revealed the sincerity of her scientific vocation. Although she limited her efforts to commentary and synthesis, her work contributed to the great progress made by Newtonian science in the middle of the eighteenth century".

All volumes are listed with title, size, purchase price, and optionally, a description of the binding. We counted nearly 900 volumes for the single year 1758. Among the suppliers, we find the major printers and booksellers of the period. Jean-François Le Barbier II (1731-1774) was bookseller in Le Mans, from 1750 to 1774. With an other manuscript which is an inventory after Le Barbier's death, of his stock, with prices in margin. In-folio. [370 x 230 mm] Collation : (242) ff.

– Goed. IV 1, 488, 7, 5; Mendelssohn-Kat. Wolfenbüttel Nr 24. [Attributes: First Edition]

ALICANTE, Spain. "Plan de la rade Alicant en Espagne".

      - A fine manuscript chart of Alicante Bay, Spain, drafted by a French naval officer during the Seven Years’ War. This highly attractive original manuscript chart showcases the Bay of Alicante, an important harbour along the Costa Blanca, drafted during the period of the Seven Years’ War (1756-1763). While the chart is undated and unsigned, it stylistically accords perfectly with the manner of the mid-18th Century. It was also almost certainly drafted by a French naval officer as during the period vessels of the Marine Royale (Royal French Navy) frequented Spanish waters and ports. While Spain did not formally join the French side in the war until 1761, since 1733, France and Spain were united in the alliance of the ‘Bourbon Family Compact’ (Pacte de Famille / Pacto de Familia), owing to the familial relationship between the two countries’ ruling houses. Spain still maintained cartographic secrecy laws, motivated by (not unjustified) fears that hydrographic intelligence could be used by enemy states, notably Britain, to attacks their ports. This ensured that very few charts of Spanish waters were published up to this period, which often required French naval officers to draft their own charts of Spanish ports. With toponymy written in French, the waters are colored in a brilliant aquamarine wash, typical of period, featuring a sailing ship and a compass rose, from which radiate rhumb lines, while bathymetric soundings dot the approaches to Alicante’s port. Features along the shore are represented pictographically, including towns and mountains. The city of Alcante is labeled as "ville d’alican", while in the waters before its quays are labeled ‘le molle’, the anchoring place for ships. Above the city, atop a steep precipice is ‘Le Chateau’, the Castell de Santa Bàrbara, an ancient fortress that was captured by Alfonso of Castile from the Moors in 1248. To the right of Alcante is the town of ‘Ste. Face’ (Santa Faz), while the points marking both extremities of Alicante Bay feature guard houses, acting as both beacons to shipping and as sentries on alert for enemy fleets. Alicante was long one of the most important ports in the Valencia region of Spain. Its role as an entrepôt took a great hit during the War of the Spanish Succession (1701-14), during which it was occupied by the British for three years. Following the conflict, Alicante focused its economy on the export of high value agricultural products such as oranges and almonds, leathers goods and fish. This especially attractive chart of Alcante is an important artifact of Seven Years’ War era and a fine work of maritime cartography created by a French naval officer operating in Spanish waters.

SPAIN - BALEARIC ISLANDS / FINE POLISH PRINTING: KRÓTKIE ALE FUNDAMENTALNE OPISANIE BALEARYJSKICH I PYTHYUZYJSKICH WYSP MAJORCA, MINORCA, IVICA I FORMENTERA Z DOWODNIEYSZYCH I NOWSZYCH RELACYI ZEBRANE I DO DRUKOWANIA Z NIEMIECKIEGO.

Warsaw: [Jesuit Press] 1756 - Octavo (17.5 x 11 cm / 6.9 x 4.3 inches): 8, 72, 1 folding plate of maps (30 x 45.5 cm / 11.8 x 17.9 inches) – Collation Complete, bound in contemporary half calf with marbled boards (Very Good, internally bright and clean, main title with paper in blank space below text carved out and replaced with a patch (an old alteration) in order to supposedly remove stamp, just grazing a few letters but otherwise no loss, map with excellent original hand colour with one small tear with old repairs at hinge just entering image, binding with some splitting at head and tail and minor shelf wear but overall good and firm). Extremely rare – a lovely gem that represents the first detailed description of the Balearic Islands in Polish, issued in the wake of the Fall of Minorca (1756), by the Jesuit Press of Warsaw, including a fine sheet of maps engraved by Bart?omiej Strachowski. This extremely rare and attractive work is the first printed description of the Balearic Islands printed in the Polish language, and features Bart?omiej Strachowski’s magnificent plate of maps of Minorca, which perhaps represents the earliest printed maps of Spain issued in the Polish language. The work was published by the Jesuit Press of Warsaw in order to satisfy the Polish intelligentsia’s curiosity regarding the Balearic islands in the wake of the successful French siege of British Minorca in May-June 1756, one of the most shocking events to occur in Europe during the era. The text features a fascinating and lucidly composed description of the Balearic Islands, including fine summations of its history, geography, politics and natural sciences. As noted in the title, the work was ‘drukowania z niemieckiego,’ meaning "printed from the German," as the Jesuit Press derived the text from Johann Friedrich Seyfart’s Kurze doch gründliche Beschreibung der Balearischen und Pythyusischen Inseln, Majorca, Minorca, Yvica und Formentera (Frankfurt & Leipzig: Adam Jonatan Felsseckers Erben, 1756), itself and extremely rare work (which notably did not feature a map). Seyfart, in turn, borrowed from the very best sources, such as John Armstrong’s The History of the Island of Minorca (London, 1752); George Cleghorn, Observations on the epidemical diseases in Minorca, from 1744 to 1749: to which is prefixed, a short account of the climate, productions, inhabitants, and endemical distempers of that island (London, 1751); and the Abbé de Veyrac’s Etat present de l’Espagne (Paris, 1718). The works starts out with a short but informative section, Opisanie Fortecy s? Filippa na wyspie Minorce jako prawdziwego Porto Mahon, which describes the island’s main city, Maó (Mahón) and the great bastion of Castle St. Philip, which guards its harbour, one of the finest natural ports in the Mediterranean. The remainder of the text features the well-ordered descriptions of the various aspects of the Balearic Islands. Bart?omiej Strachowski’s Plate of Maps of Minorca - A highlight of the work is the wonderful plate of maps of Minorca created by the prominent Polish engraver Bart?omiej Strachowski of Wroc?aw (with the imprint ‘Straschowsky sculps., Vratislaviae,’ lower right) entitled, Mappa Wyspy Minorki z planta? Portu y miasta Mahon z naleza?cemi fortyfikacyami port zas?aniaia?cemi mappy de Bellin. The cartography is derived from Jacques-Nicolas Bellin’s Carte des Isles de Maiorque Minorque et Yvice (Paris, 1740), one of the period’s most influential maps of the Balearic Islands. The sheet features three maps with nomenclature in both Polish and German: 1) focusing on the entire island of Minorca (upper centre); 2) a detailed plan of Maó (Mahón) Harbour and Castle St. Philip (lower left and centre); and 3) a general map of the Balearic islands (lower right). Strachowski’s two exquisite Rococo cartouches respectively contain the main title and a key to 28 sites on the Maó (Mahón) Harbour-Fort St. Philip plan. The original hand colouring of the maps is especially attractive, with the lovely palett

Iliados ... Odysseias ... [in Greek].

Glasguae: excudebant Robertus et Andreas Foulis,, 1756?8. Together 2 works, 4 volumes bound in 2, folio (315 x 200 mm). Contemporary or perhaps late 18th-century vellum over thick boards, dark green morocco labels, smooth spines, sides with outer frame formed with a twin fillet in red, spot-marbled endpapers, binder's blanks of laid paper with Pro Patria watermark in the "Maid of Dort" form, red-brown burnished edges, pink silk bookmarks. Without the general title (issued in 1758), as usual. Bookplate of St Andrew St John, 14th Baron St John of Bletso (1759?1817), to each pastedown. Vellum lightly marked, silk bookmarks detached and laid in with resulting thin tan-lines to one spread in each volume, a few minor marks internally, sig. 4f1 Odysseias with two small marginal paper flaws just touching a couple of letters on verso, overall a fine set. First edition of the Foulis Press Homer, described by Edward Harwood as "One of the most splendid editions of Homer ever delivered to the world ? its accuracy is equal to its magnificence" (Harwood, 4?5). The text was carefully edited by the Glasgow professors James Moor and George Muirhead (Moor was Robert Foulis's brother-in-law) and the book was printed in a new fount of Greek type designed and cut by the Glasgow typefounder Alexander Wilson, the fount being noted for its beauty and regularity. The brothers jointly won the silver medal of the Select Society of Edinburgh for the best-printed and most correct Greek book. "As the eye is the organ of fancy, I read Homer with more pleasure in the Glasgow edition. Through that fine medium, the poet's sense appears more beautiful and transparent" (Gibbon, Miscellaneous Works).

[Attributes: Hard Cover]

        Original Mute Violin

Used; Like New/Used; Like New. An original mute (or "practice") violin, with the pegs, fingerboard, bridge, tailpiece, and strings of a normal violin on an anchor-shaped frame, without a resonating space.<br>Mute violins, known to have existed since the eighteenth century and mentioned by Leopold Mozart in his Versuch einer gründlichen Violinschule (1756), are built to allow violinists to practice technique without actually generating a sound -- and therefore without disturbing their neighbors. They may have an outer frame with the shape of the violin, or an even more minimal anchor-shaped frame to allow for a comfortable hold and for shifting hand positions. Some mute violins were constructed from the remnants of earlier functioning violins. Today's violinists have the option of practicing on an electric "silent violin," the successor to these eighteenth- and nineteenth-century instruments.
