Friendship album of Conrad Friedrich Daumiller (Daumüller) from Nuremberg.

Nuremberg, Altdorf, Jena and other places, 1753-1756. - Oblong 8vo. Title page, 9 pp. of index, and 290 entires on a total of 155 ff. Contemporary red-dyed vellum, covers and spine elaborately gilt. A southern German student's curious and substantial friendship album, containing numerous entries and poems in German, Latin, and French, many with salacious or erotic content: "Ein Buch, ein Freund, ein Glas, ein wol gebiltes Weib / Sind der Galanten Welt vergnügter Zeitvertreib." Among such risqué contributions are the usual pious sayings, as well as quotations from the classics and by contemporary poets such as Gellert and Lessing. - Conrad Friedrich Daumiller (Daumüller) hailed from Nuremberg, studied theology in Altdorf and Jena, and died in 1761, still a young man, as a candidate for a preacher's office at the Carmelites' monastery in Nuremberg. Another friendship album of Daumiller's is known in the Anna Amalia library in Weimar, covering a similar period of time but comprising no more than 28 entries (Stb 318; acquired from a Nuremberg auction in 1811; cf. K. Goldmann, Nürnberger und Altdorfer Stammbücher aus vier Jahrhunderten, Nuremberg 1981, no. 376). - A few leaves have been removed, apparently by a (near) contemporary owner. Well preserved; binding somewhat faded; gilt decoration oxydized; slight defect to lower spine-end. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

A New and Accurate Description of the Present Great Roads and the Principal Cross Roads of England and Wales, Commencing at London and continuing to the farthest Parts of the Kingdom...

London, England: R. & J. Dodsley, 1756. First [and only?] edition. In contemporary [?] or very early full leather binding of brown calf. Boards present but completely and cleanly detached. The binding much rubbed and dessicated, especially along the spine. The hubbed spine bearing, in blind-stamp, "Roads of England." Also, at the spine tail, in much-rubbed gilt, the date 1756. The firmly bound text block retains great integrity. 7 x 4.5 inches. On rag content, laid paper. With title page, 6 unnumbered pages, 168 and lxiv numbered pages. Title page states, Price Bound Four Shillings. With a handsome tail-piece engraving at p. 161 and at p. xl. Tipped in to the FEP opposite page lxiv is a large fold-out B&W map with decorative cartouche, Kitchin's most Accurate Map of the Roads of England and Wales: with the Distances by the Mile-Stones, and other most exact Admensurations between Town & Town. Map measures 14.5 x 14.25 inches (37 x 36 cm). The map in remarkable condition; just a hint of age-toning. Book's pastedowns and opposite FEPs with glue off-settings. Front pastedown with the handsome armorial/pictorial bookplate of R.P.L. Booker. A blank front FEP with the inscription, likely in his own hand, "R. P. Lee Booker, Eton" in very small neat ink writing. Preliminaries lightly to moderately age toned. Else a rather clean copy. Downgraded to Good Plus chiefly on account of the poor state of the binding. Deemed worthy of custom rebinding or restoration. This is a study of the then-present principal roads of England and Wales, with detailed descriptions of way-stations, landmarks, distances, &c. Includes a section about the itinerary of Antoninus and Roman stations in England. Perhaps the most remarkable and significant feature of the book is the fold-out map, a map that seldom survives in extant copies of the book. A rare book in any condition. R. P. Lee Booker [died 1922?] was educated at Winchester and New College, Oxford, where he gained a first class in Mods. and a second class in Lit. Hum. in 1887. No later than 1888 he was appointed to the faculty at Eton College, Windsor, eventually serving as a House Master. Booker apparently served in WWI. By 1920 Booker had left Eton in hopes that he would find suitable employment elsewhere, though he made some critical remarks about the education system. He commented on the difficulty of getting his work printed. Booker was exceptionally interested in English antiquity, archaeology and history. He was a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries [FSA]. Specific interests apparently included: Prehistoric monuments and earthworks; Roman monuments and Roman earthworks; English ecclesiastical monuments; English secular monuments. In that regard, and commencing around 1908, he was active in contributing extensively to an inventory of the ancient and historical monuments and constructions connected with or illustrative of the contemporary culture, civilization and conditions of life of the people in England from the earliest times to the year 1700.. Presumed First Edition. Disbound. Good Plus. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. Association Copy.

1756. CELSUS, Aulus Cornelius. (GREIVE, James). A. Cornelius Celsus Of Medicine. London: Printed for D. Wilson and T. Durham, 1756. Octavo, full contemporary calf gilt rebacked with original spine laid down, raised bands, original red morocco spine label. $8000.Scarce first edition in English, Greive's ""fine and scholarly"" translation (DNB) of ""the greatest medical treatise from ancient Rome.""""Roman literature, otherwise so barren of good medical authorities, can boast of possessing in Celsus one who, for elegance, terseness, learning, good sense and practical information, stands unrivaled"" (Peck, 308). Celsus' De Medicina ""is the oldest medical document after the Hippocratic writings. Written about AD 30, it remains the greatest medical treatise from ancient Rome, and the first Western history of medicine;"" its editio princeps, printed in Florence in 1478, ""was one of the first medical books to be printed"" (Garrison & Morton 20). Celsus' work is notable for containing important, early Western accounts of dentistry (including treatments of toothaches and fractured jaws) and surgery (including the first accounts of the use of ligature and early descriptions of plastic surgery). A physician and lecturer in chemistry, Grieve ""omitted no pains in examining the various editions of his original, nor in consulting his best annotators"" in preparing this first edition in English: ""Whoever has sufficient leisure and disposition for an attentive perusal of this work must perceive it has cost the Translator much time, care, and study… Dr. Grieve has shown himself a gentleman of literature and application"" (Brueggemann, 641). Engraved title page from a 1687 edition of De Medicina published in Amsterdam by Joannem Wolters affixed to front pastedown. With portion of a line engraving (measuring 3 by 6 inches) regarding 17th-century cancer patients affixed to rear pastedown. The Wellcome Library holds another, larger fragment of the same broadside, and believes it to be an advertisement for ""the services of an English travelling healer, possibly Sir William Read (d. 1715)… Read was oculist to Queen Anne, traveled around England treating people for cataract, cancer and other diseases, flaunted his services to charity and received a knighthood for his charitable services"" (Wellcome Library).Scattered light foxing. Title page with excised strip renewed, including the word ""OF"" from the title. Binding expertly restored. A most desirable copy in contemporary binding. Scarce.

[Leclerc, 1766], London [Nancy] 1756 - THE FIRST PUBLISHED ATHEIST DENUNCIATION OF THE CHURCH: A FOUNDATION WORK IN THE ATHEIST CANON. "LE LIVRE LE PLUS HARDI ET LE PLUS TERRIBLE QUI AIT JAMAIS PARU DANS AUCUN LIEU DU MONDE" â€" GRIMM. Octavo (190 x 120mm.) pp. [2], ii, xxviii, 295, [1]. a*2, a-b8, A-S8, T2. Woodcut ornament on title, typographical ornaments. In contemporary cats-paw calf, spine richly gilt in gilt ruled compartments, large sunflower tools gilt at centres, green morocco label gilt, edges with gilt dentelle roll, blue marbled endpapers, all edges marbled blue. A fine copy, fresh, crisp and clean. First edition, very rare and a fine copy, of Holbach's first work, the first published atheist denunciation of Christianity, printed in a very small print run, with a false date and imprint, in the guise of a work by Holbach's friend Boulanger, who had died a few years previously. "Paul Henri Thiery, Baron d'Holbach (1723-1789), was the centre of the radical wing of the Philosophes. He was friend, host, and patron to a wide circle that included Diderot, D'Alembert, Helvetius, and Hume. Holbach wrote, translated, edited, and issued a stream of books and pamphlets, often under other names, that has made him the despair of bibliographers but has connected his name, by innuendo, gossip, and association, with most of what was written in defence of atheistic materialism in late eighteenth-century France" (Richardson, p. i). Holbach realised that the publication of his incendiary text would need to be treated with the utmost caution. He had carried out the posthumous publishing of two works by his good friend Boulanger, L'Origine du Despotisme Oriental in 1761 and L'Antiquità Devoilà in 1765. He then took advantage of the cover given by these works to publish his own, much more explosive work, concealed behind the name of Boulanger, using a false date, and with a title that imitated one of Boulanger's. "M. Barbier has published detailed information given him by Naigeon to the effect that Holbach entrusted the manuscript to M. De Saint-Lambert, who had it printed by Leclerc at Nancy . . . Most copies that got to Paris at that time were bought by several officers of the King's regiment then in garrison at Nancy, among them M. De Villevielle, a friend of Voltaire and Condorcet. Damilaville (one of Holbach's chief collaborators) did not sell a single copy and even had a great deal of trouble to get one for Holbach who waited for it a long time" (Cushing p. 46). The most detailed bibliography to date, by J. Vercruysse, entirely concurs with Barbier's account of the printing of the few copies of the first edition at Nancy, but corrects the date of printing to probably 1766, as correspondence about the work, particularly from Voltaire, Diderot and Grimm commenced from that year. The watermarks also date the paper to 1762-3. We now know, through the testimony of Naigeon, Holbach's chief collaborator, that Holbach then used this clandestine form of printing to publish, with the same collaborators, a whole series of atheist texts, an extremely dangerous occupation. "Indeed, Diderot feared for his friends who produced such atheistic works, writing in 1768, 'It's raining bombs on the house of the Lord. I go in fear and trembling lest one of these terrible bombers gets into difficulties.' He certainly had in mind his friend d'Holbach" (Holohan. pp. xl). The initial diffusion of the work was slow as it was produced in a very small print run, and was actively sought after by the police. Both Voltaire and Diderot wrote to friends advising extreme caution because of the danger of owning the work. Voltaire noted that it had created "une sensation prodigieuse et merità e," describing it as a bomb thrown against the ancient edifice of the church. Diderot wrote that the work was being sold for as much as four gold 'Louis' and that anyone caught selling a copy was severely punish . . . Es folgt eine ausführliche Beschreibung - bis auf die Manschetten. Bei der Autorenangabe dürfte es sicher um ein leider nicht zu lüftendes Pseudonym handeln. Das in der entsprechenden Literatur als "Brief der Krügerin" eingegangene Werk wird schon von Neubaur als "sehr selten geworden" bezeichnet, heute ist es praktisch unauffindbar.

Principes mathématiques de la philosophie naturelle.

Paris, Desaint & Saillant, Lambert, 1756. (Avertissement). Cohen, The French translation of Isaac Newton's Philosophiae..., Archives internationales des sciences 21, 1968. ***** First and sole French translation of Newton's "Principia". FIRST ISSUE. One of the very rare copies with both titles dated 1756, about 12 copies are known with this title page. This 1756 edition was presumably issued in a very small number of copies and then quickly withdrawn on account of its imperfections. The Cotes preface is present. Second state of the "Avertissement". "Known throughout intellectual Europe as Emilie, the name popularized by Voltaire, Mme du Châtelet - beyond the influence she had for some fifteen years on the orientation of Voltaire's works and on his public activity - contributed to the vitality of French scientific life to the parallel diffusion of Newtonianism and Leibnizian epistemology. Her affairs entertained the faishionable world of her period, yet her last moments revealed the sincerity of her scientific vocation. Although she limited her efforts to commentary and synthesis, her work contributed to the great progress made by Newtonian science in the middle of the eighteenth century". DSB 3, 215- 217. 2 volumes in-4. [248 x 192 mm] Collation : (4), XXXIX, (5), 437 pp., 9 planches. / (4), IV, 180, 297, (2) pp., 5 planches.

[AUTOMATIC ENGLISH TRANSLATION FOLLOWS] first edition, rare, these two volumes published two years apart and whose result will never see the day.       First edition, rare. Half morocco modern cherry. Confusing pastiche of a binding Restoration. Back with false nerves decorated boards five irons cold, gilt; roulette tail and head. Very nice copy. Important document about the history of Canada and the United States, the book begins by questioning the causes of conflict between Britain and France on the territory of Ohio. Indeed, in 1756, the beginning of the 7 years war, or Indian War, war of conquest as a legitimate occupation of the territories; this war would spread to Virginia and Nova Scotia all the lakes in Canada, some Indians fought alongside the English, other than those of French. Shebbeare returns to defeat England on the bad policy and general presence in Canada, the intervention of the American militia and Washington. The author roundly accused the British government (kings and ministers) to have failed in protecting the British colonies in America and predicted the ruin of England, citing examples the urge to bad policy in Canada . In addition to this charge, the author examines the situation of England in Europe, the treaty with Russia, the difficulties with the House of Hanover and France accuses his country again to be scuttled by disastrous political decisions. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate. [Ensemble] La noblesse oisive

First edition of these three treaties. Full brown calf glossy marbled time. Back to nerves decorated with 5 large florets. Part of title in red morocco. Tail headdress threadbare. Jolie binding, the unusual iron. The dispute over the military nobility and shopping was originally launched by the work of the Abbe Coyer who committed the nobility to engage in trade, this first book was followed by answers, objections and pamphlets throughout the year 1756. Our copy includes three essays related to this controversy. We know that the nobility was primarily military, trade was long considered the work of the lower classes. The work of the Abbe Coyer had the effect of a bomb, the contrary argument of old nobility was defended by the knight Arq. The first two tests trying to find a reasonable solution to this dilemma by examining the principles and theories of the two opposing ideas. The last test is a satirical tone in praise of idleness and taking against the current all the controversy on the functions of the nobility. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate. LE PREVOST D'EXMES establishes a critical rule in périodiste Freron and the Literary Review. Freron vilified not only philosophers but the literature of his time. The second, more philosophical advocate for philosophers and the work of several authors as Diderot and Rousseau. Behind the criticism of the company Freron, reveals an ethics of writing and criticism. The work is composed in the form of letters to a lady in London. ESTC Citation No. T127188. Gibson's Library, p. 144. Very GoodHanway was both a widely traveled merchant, with connections to the Russia Company, and a philanthropist, whose causes included foundlings, prostitutes and the climbing apprentices of chimney sweeps. His mother's death, in 1755, prompted him to return to Portsmouth where she was buried, the brief trip that served as inspiration for this, his second book, to which he appended An Essay on Tea. In the book's main part, Hanway describes many of the places he visited (including Salisbury, with its great cathedral, and Stonehenge), with digressions on tombstones, sacred music and oratorios, divine poetry, temperance, lap-dogs, false grief, the ruling passion of women, and much else. His Essay on Tea indicts the beverage for causing everything from insomnia, weak nerves, and scurvy to bad teeth, and proposes 'Herbs of our own growth in lieu of tea.' Both works, but especially the latter, led to a literary skirmish with Oliver Goldsmith, Samuel Johnson, and other ardent tea-drinkers. Regarding A journal of eight days journey from Portsmouth to Kingston upon Thames, Johnson claimed that Hanway had 'acquired some reputation by traveling abroad, but lost it all by traveling at home'. And though Hanway was largely right about the adulterated beverage that passed for tea in the mid-eighteenth century, Johnson lambasted Hanway's views in both the Literary Magazine and the Idler, where Hanway appears as Dick Wormwood, a man whose sole delight is to find everything wrong.
