"The scoundrel's dictionary, or an explanation of the cant words used by the thieves, house-breakers, street-robbers and pick-pockets about town. To which is prefixed, some curious dissertations on the art of wheedling; and a collection of their flash songs, with a proper glossary. The whole printed from a copy taken on one of their gang, in the late scuffle between the Watchmen and a party of them on Clerkenwell-Green; which copy is now in the custody of one of the constables of that parish"

London: for J. Brownnell. 1756. "First (and only) edition. 8vo, pp. 32; 19th century half red morocco, gilt-lettered spine, new blue cloth folding box with leather label. The Huth - Slater - Brett-Smith copy, with the Huth bookplate. & & Despite the romantic framing story provided on the title-page, the text is largely derived from Shirley's The Triumph of Wit (1688), and the cant entries in B.E.'s A New Dictionary of the Terms Ancient and Modern of the Canting Crew (1699). Perhaps the gang member was carrying one of these books, or was newly initiated and required a ready translation of his confederates jargon? The Scoundrel's Dictionary nevertheless has its own charms. A product of a time of rising crime, when criminals were often viewed as popular culture heroes, its rough-and-ready appearance and pocket size fit it for practical or street use while its studious predecessors would have been more likely to be consulted or encountered in a library. It was a source acknowledged by Grose and it's rare, with only a single copy appearing at auction (that one twice) since 1976.& & Alston IX, 322, ""An abridged version of B.E.'s dictionary""; Burke, The Literature of Slang, p. 75, ""Reprints the section devoted to canting and canting songs from The Triumph of Wit, 1688;"" Coleman, A History of Cant and Slang Dictionaries I, pp. 68-69; not in the Cordell Collection; Kennedy 11895; no mention of the book in Partridge's Slang Today and Yesterday; Starnes and Noyes, The English Dictionary from Cawdrey to Johnson, 1604-1755, ""This book, often called the rarest of the cant dictionaries because so many copies are thought to have been lost in a great fire, is ...a reprint of Part III of The Triumph of Wit and hence another descendant of The Canting Academy. Whereas The Triumph of Wit was apparently intended for the diversion of the middle class, however, this dictionary seems to have had some contact with the beggars. At any rate it concludes with an unusual plea for charity to honest beggars."" & & OCLC locates 7 copies (5 in the U.S., ESTC adds 1), plus the British Library copy for which the publisher is given as J. Brownell. This is the only work recorded from the publisher, whichever way it's spelt. "

British Education: Or, The Source of the Disorders of Great Britain. Being An Essay towards proving, that the Immortality, Ignorance, and false Taste, which so generally prevail, are the natural and necessary Consequences of the present defective System of Education. With An Attempt to shew, that a Revival of the Art of Speaking, and the Study of our own Language, might contribute, in a great measure, to the Cure of those Evils. In Three Parts. I. Of the Use of these Studies to Religion, and Morality; as also, to the Support of the British Constitution. II. Their absolute Necessity in order to refine, ascertain, and fix the English Language. III. Their Use in the Cultivation of the Imitative Arts: shewing, that were the Study of Oratory made a necessary Branch of this Education of Youth; Poetry, Musick, Painting, an Sculpture, might arrive at as high a Pitch of perfection in England, as ever they did in Athens or Rome

London: Printed for R. and J. Dodsley..., 1756. FIRST ENGLISH EDITION. 8vo, 203 x 116 mms., pp.[ii], [xl], including half-title, 536, later 18th century mottled calf, rebacked, new morocco label, a very good copy, with the later armorial bookplate of John S. Pakington (1799 - 1800) on the front paste-down end-paper. Pakington, the first Baron Hampton, entered Parliament in 1832 and was noted for his interest in reforming education. Thomas Sheridan (1719 - 1788) combined his talents as actor and theatre manager with those of a proselytiser for British education and orthoepy. The work was first published in Dublin. Thomas Miller, in "The Formation of College English: A Survey of the Archives of Eighteenth-Century Rhetorical Theory and Practice" (Rhetoric Society Quarterly, 1990) notes, "The Irishman who had the greatest impact on college English was not a college professor but a public advocate of English studies, the elocutionist Thomas Sheridan.... Sheridan's argument that elocution would preserve the British way of life become more understandable when read against his specific proposals for teaching English in Ireland in order to keep the gentry from emigrating to learn how to become more English."

156 (1) ; (2) 111 ; 23 (1)p. . Jämför Warmholtz 8533, not.

A Short History of the Israelites. With an Account of their Manners, Customs, Laws, Polit and Religion. Being an useful Introduction tot he Reading of the Old Testament. Translated from the French of Abbé Fleury, Author of the Ecclesiastical History. By Ellis Farneworth

London, Printed for J. Whiston and B. White...and R. Baldwin..., 1756. FIRST AND ONLY EDITION of this translation. 8vo, 194 x 119 mms., pp. viii, 246, contemporary lightly speckled calf, gilt spine, red morocco label; lower front joint very slightly cracked, but a very good copy, with the inscription "Allen Wheeler/ E. Coll. Wadh./ Oxon." on the title-page, and in another contemporary hand on the recto of the blank leaf before the title-page, "Fleury's Manner of the Jews is an admirable little Book." Wheeler (1776 - 1823) matriculated at Wadham College, Oxford in 1792; he was later headmaster of Worcester College. Fleury (1640 - 1723) published Moeurs des Israélites in 1681. John Nichols, in his Literary Anecdotes of the Eighteenth Century quotes a letter from Thomas Bedford who claims that he, not Farneworth, was the translator. The entry for Farneworth in the ODNB doesn't mention this as one of his translations, but cites Nichols' report that Farneworth was obliged to "hawk round the town" the translation of Machiavelli. The work was reviewed at length (pp. 321 - 333) in the October, 1756 issue of The Monthly Review, with extensive quotation from the book and the rather lame conclusion, "the extracts we have already given will be sufficient to convey to our Readers a just idea of the whole performance, and likewise render it unnecessary to say any thing of the translation." Maslen and Lancaster. Bowyer ledgers, 4044. 500 copies printed.

        M. Fabius Quinctilianus His Institutes of Eloquence: Or, The Art of Speaking in Public in Every Character and Capacity. Translated into English after the Best Latin Editions. With Notes, Critical and Explanatory by William Guthrie

London: Printed for T. Waller..., 1756. FIRST EDITION. 2 volumes. 8vo, 206 x 125 mms., pp. xxxiv, 396; [ii], 568, contemporary calf, red morocco labels; very slight wear to front joint of volume 1, but a very good and attractive set, with the "Auchincruive" bookplate on the front paste-down end-paper of each volume. A commentary on Quintilian published in 1686 by John Warr (fl. 1648–1649) seems to be the first attempt to render a portion of Quintilian's Institutes in English, followed by this first complete translation by William Guthrie (?1708 - 1770). Another new translation by J. Patsall was published in 1774, who comments in his Preface that he had envisioned a translation of Quintilian just before Guthrie's was published, ungraciously remarking that, "It was necessary to give time for the judgment of the Public upon Mr. Guthrie's performance; but it was found not favourable to him."

A remarkable and most attractive sammelband of eight French, Dutch, and Belgian art auction catalogues. All of them are rare. I. Jean Omer Joly de Fleury (1700-55), a member of a prominent and wealthy family, was an important collector of prints, drawings, books, scientific instruments, and natural history objects. We learn from Gabriel Martin's preface that, due to the collector's sudden death, the prints and drawings would be sold "as found" in portefeuilles and the large collection of specimens again, would be sold "as found," in the drawers. Nevertheless, the collection is quite well catalogued and we can gather an excellent idea of the contents. Dezallier d'Argenville described Joly's collection in 1755, calling it "famous." He illustrates some of the specimens. II. A fine sale of 847 lots of prints and 19 lots of books with plates. Very rare; no copy in OCLC. III. 116 lots. OCLC locates only one copy, at the BN. IV. A painter's collection of art. 443 lots including paintings, drawings, prints, and reliefs. Collin de Vermont (1693?-1761), was "a pupil of Rigaud and Jouvenet. He studied in Rome and entered the Académie in 1725. In 1727, he was one of the artists to work on decorations for the Apollo Gallery in the Louvre."-Benezit, III, p. 1244. OCLC locates only one copy, at the BN. V. 300 lots of paintings by Rubens, van Dyck, Breughel, Wouwermans, and Teniers. Very rare; no copy in OCLC. VI. Benjamin da Costa, a member of the prominent Anglo/Dutch Jewish family, formed a small but important collection of paintings. 90 lots. Very rare; no copy in OCLC. VII. Adrien Maurice, duc de Noailles (1678-1766), had a brilliant military career and served in the wars of Louis XV in Italy and Germany. He was appointed a marshal of the French Army in 1734. The duc de Noailles was also a fiscal advisor to Louis XV and unsuccessfully recommended financial prudence. This catalogue contains only 88 lots but we find paintings by Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Titian, Raphael, Carracci, Dürer, Breughel, Rembrandt, etc. OCLC locates only one copy, at the BN. VIII. One of the most important art sales in Holland of the period. 117 lots of paintings (Wouwerman, Ruysdael, and others), 172 lots of drawings, 227 lots of prints, 85 lots of illustrated books, 20 lots of instruments, 192 lots of medals, and 29 lots of "Diverses Raretés." Not in OCLC. Fine copies. ❧ I. Lugt 906. N.B.G., Vol. 26, col. 861. II. Lugt 1404. III. Lugt 1395. IV. Lugt 1181. V. Lugt 1006. VI. Lugt 1400. VII. Lugt 1654. VIII. Lugt 1528. .

A Short History of the Israelites. With an Account of their Manners, Customs, Laws, Polit and Religion. Being an useful Introduction tot he Reading of the Old Testament. Translated from the French of Abbé Fleury, Author of the Ecclesiastical History. By Ellis Farneworth.

London Printed for J. Whiston and B. White.and R. Baldwin. 1756 - FIRST AND ONLY EDITION of this translation. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

An Appeal to the People: Containing the Genuine Entire Letter of Admiral Byng... (and) Further Particulars in Relation to the Case of Admiral Byng

Lon., 1756.. This is one of the more tragic episodes in British naval history. On his way to relieve the garrison on Minorca during the Seven Years’ War, Byng was surprised by the French fleet. After an indecisive engagement with the French he retreated without being able to resupply the garrison. Byng thought he was doing what he needed to protect his ships, but public and official opinion were against him. He was found guilty of dereliction of his duties. By the law of the day, this was a capital crime, and he was executed, despite appeals for clemency from people in power. See DNB. NMM V, part 1, 1168. The two pamphlets, dating from the time of the event, were written in support of Byng. “Appeal” is missing the bottom of the last leaf, with no loss of text. “Further Particulars” has a dark smudge at the top of the title page. Both are otherwise in very good condition, removed from larger volumes, and both are scarce in the trade. “Appeal” presently appears online for $1500. “Particulars” for $750. Both pamphlets

London: Printed by H. Woodfall, 1756. First Edition. Quarter-bound Leather. Very Good +. First Edition. 4to; [6], 201, [5], 203-361, [1]pp, with an engraved frontispiece and an engraved plate opposite the divisional title to the Essay on Tea, both by Thomas Major after Samuel Wale. Modern quarter-calf over plain paper-covered boards, the flat spine in six compartments between decorative gilt bands, with a red morocco gilt lettering piece to the second compartment; all edges stained red, end papers renewed. Title page and preliminaries lightly foxed, but the contents otherwise clean and bright, the binding tight and firm. A splendid, wide-margined copy offered at an attractive price. ESTC Citation No. T127188. Gibson's Library, p. 144. Hanway was both a widely traveled merchant, with connections to the Russia Company, and a philanthropist, whose causes included foundlings, prostitutes and the climbing apprentices of chimney sweeps. His mother's death, in 1755, prompted him to return to Portsmouth where she was buried, the brief trip that served as inspiration for this, his second book, to which he appended An Essay on Tea. In the book's main part, Hanway describes many of the places he visited (including Salisbury, with its great cathedral, and Stonehenge), with digressions on tombstones, sacred music and oratorios, divine poetry, temperance, lap-dogs, false grief, the ruling passion of women, and much else. His Essay on Tea indicts the beverage for causing everything from insomnia, weak nerves, and scurvy to bad teeth, and proposes 'Herbs of our own growth in lieu of tea.' Both works, but especially the latter, led to a literary skirmish with Oliver Goldsmith, Samuel Johnson, and other ardent tea-drinkers. Regarding A journal of eight days journey from Portsmouth to Kingston upon Thames, Johnson claimed that Hanway had ‘acquired some reputation by traveling abroad, but lost it all by traveling at home'. And though Hanway was largely right about the adulterated beverage that passed for tea in the mid-eighteenth century, Johnson lambasted Hanway's views in both the Literary Magazine and the Idler, where Hanway appears as Dick Wormwood, a man whose sole delight is to find everything wrong.
