CANTILLON, R.)
- A Londres, Chez Fletcher Gyles, dans Holborn, 1755. (4), 430, (6, Table des Chapitres) pp. 12mo. Contemporary half calf, spine gilt in compartments, gilt lettering, floral ornament in each compartment, green paper covered boards, all edges red. Kress 5423; Goldsmiths 8989; Einaudi 846; INED 933; Higgs 938; En Français dans le Texte, 159; Leblanc 57; Antoin E. Murphy, Richard Cantillon: entrepreneur and economist; T. Hutcheson, Before Adam Smith, pp. 163-178. First edition of Cantillon's great work, 'the most systematic statement of economic principles before Adam Smith's Wealth of Nations' (Roll, p. 121). 'The economic repute of Cantillon, for a time completely obscured by the glory of Adam Smith, can never have rested upon the popularity of his little book, now one of the scarcest works in economic literature . The influence of the book is evidenced not only by the number but by the distinction of its students, including Gournay, Quesnay, Mirabeau, Turgot, and Adam Smith. It gave birth to Mirabeau's l'Ami des Hommes and apparently suggested much of the Tableau Oeconomique of Quesnay and parts of the Wealth of Nations . Cantillon avoided, as Jevons has pointed out, the one-sidedness of the Physiocrats; and yet has been marked out as a Physiocrat . Jevons thought Cantillon wrote 'with the scientific precision of a Cairnes or a Cournot,' and Prof. Marshall refers to his 'thoroughly scientific manner of discussion' . In France the Essai has been pretty continuously read (see e.g. Ganilh, Des Systèmes d'Economie Politique, 2d. ed. 1821), and so stimulating and suggestive does … [Click Below for Full Description]

NIXON, John
Londini: Typis J. Bettenham; Exemplaria prostant apud R. Manby & H.S. Cox (1744); London: Printed for R. Manby...MDCCLV, 1755. Bound in contemporary dark-brown calf over pasteboards. Spine sympathetically rebacked ca. 1900 in six compartments with two black labels bearing title and author. Date of first title stamped in gold at foot of spine. Inner hinges reinforced with canvas; text block unaffected. Boards scuffed, pitted, and bumped; binding solid. Pastedowns and flyleaves stained along edges; occasional spotting. Otherwise a good copy of this unique gathering of titles. Frontispiece depicts Greek votive marble chair which Nixon describes and studies in the Dissertatio.A sammelband containing two rhapsodic studies of fragmentary marbles (one figurative and one epigraphic) which survive in the Arundel Collection (now in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford). The two titles are unique, as previous literary engagements with Arundel's collection are almost exclusively enumerative; John Selden compiled a catalogue of the collection in 1628 with the help of Royal Librarian Patrick Young and antiquary Richard James. This collaboration, mobilized at the insistence of Robert Cotton on the arrival of the marbles from Greece and Turkey, produced the Marmora Arundeliana, printing twenty-nine Greek and nine Latin inscriptions in quasi-facsimile alongside translations and tentative interpretations. "It was this publication, and in particular the account of the Parian Marble, that made Arundel's name in learned Europe" (Vickers 9). Selden's work was expanded first, in 1667, by Humphrey Prideau … [Click Below for Full Description]

Strange Robert; Sacchi Andrea
Londra 1755. Romae" e a destra "Rob.tus Strange delin.t et Sculp.t Londini"; sotto più in grande "Apollo rewarding Merit and punishing Arrogance"; più piccolo sotto "From the Original painting of Andrea Sacchi, in y. Collection of Henry Furnese Esq.r" sotto "Sold by Rob.t Strange Engraver, at the Golden Head, in Henrietta Street, Covent Gerden London." Ed infine molto piccolo "Publishd according to Act of Parliament 1755". It was used in the Webster-Ashburton Treaty of 1842, the Quebec boundary definition of 1871, the Canada-Labrador case (1926) and the Delaware-New Jersey dispute (1932), among others. During the middle years of the eighteenth century, numerous maps were created as tensions over dominance in North America were leading up to the French and Indian War. Henry Fielding
A. Millar, 1755. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Good. Bound in contemporary full calf. (4), iv, xvii, (1), 19-240, 193-228p. Mispagination as usual with no loss to the text. Travel narrative detailing the author's trip to Lisbon in 1754. He prepared the manuscript before his death, but died before publication. First edition. This is the first edition. It was published first, but was actually printed second due to an earlier repressed printing, which was less edited. This first published edition is sometimes known as the Humphrey edition and is so named after the landlady at Rye who Fielding writes uncompromisingly about. Her name was changed from Francis to Humphrey due to this. The second edition, with less editing, is in turn sometimes called the Francis edition. After the Lisbon Earthquake there was an increased public interest in Lisbon and the second edition (first printed) was released. Condition: Good due to hinges. Front hinge cracked. Bumped with loss to the top of the spine. Offsetting to the endpapers. Small pencil inscription to the rear free endpaper. Small chip to the front free endpaper.
