Theodorus, Flavius Malius; Heusinger, Jacob Friedrich, editor
Wolfenbuttel: Bindsal. Good with no dust jacket. 1755. First Edition. 40 pp. Editio princeps. A small quarto. Leather boards are scuffed and quite rubbed at the corners, front board detached, spine covering is dry and rough. Marbled endpapers with some age and a few numbers written on them. Title page has the stamp and inscription of Ign. F. Hostmann who would become Bishop of Cleveland. Original silk page marker. Some amusing woodcuts, text in double columns under an italic text, entirely in Latin. Date from colophon. Theodorus (fl 376-ca409) was a consul of the Roman Empire and the author of this treatise on metres, "one of the best of its kind" (H. Keil). Augustine of Hippo was initially a fan but came to dislike Theodorus intensely -- however, not for reasons having to do with metrical scholarship! The editor, J. F. Heusinger (1717-1778) , was a noted grammarian in Wolfenbuttel (Guelpherbyti) , an admirable interpreter of Greek and Latin authors. For this editio princeps, he worked from an old manuscript of Theodorus's work. Very scarce. No auction records and no originals for sale. Most of the copies in WorldCat are later editions, even those in the 1755 record. ; 4to 11" - 13" tall; 40 pages .

[Victor, Benjamin]
London: Printed for C. Corbett, opposite St. Dunstan's Church in Fleet-Street, 1755. One of two editions printed by Corbett in 1755; the ornament on title page., preliminary pagination and lines 7-13 on p. 208 differ. Title page with woodcut "squirrel" device. [6 (of 8)], 208 pp. Lacking A1 half-title. 1 vols. 12mo. The Curious Affairs of Mrs. Wolseley. The "widow of the wood" was Ann Northey Whitby, whose dalliances and serial marriages are chronicled by the theatre manager, literary dabbler, and poet-laureate of Ireland, Benjam Victor. The publication here of letters and legal facts connected with Northey and Sir William Wolseley so scandalized the Staffordshire Wolseleys, that one descendant of Northey's fourth husband bought up and burned as many copies as he could. ESTC N936; Block, p. 144. Title-leaf slightly chipped at edges and reinforced with tape on verso, scattered soiling. Bound in full modern tan calf. A good, serviceable copy.

Scheurleer, Hendrik Florisz. (1692-1768)
Prijs: ?975,- (incl. lijst).

[DEZALLIER D'ARGENVILLE, A. J. D.]
Paris, De Bure, 1755. 4to (28.6 x 21.1 cm). Engraved frontispiece, [6], xvi, 560 [1] pp., 26 engraved plates. Contemporary full mottled calf, richly floral gilt spine with five raised bands and gilt lettered red morocco label. Marbled endpapers, edged red. Next to La conchyliologie (1742, 1757) and La lithographie (1742), this is d'Argenville's most important publication, but lesser known and rarer than the other two. It was published anonymously, as were the other two. l'Oryctologie mainly deals with corals, fossils (mainly of molluscs, and fish), minerals and precious stones, but an appendix also includes "oyseaux qui n'ont jamais eté gravés" and "Poissons de l'Amerique dessinez par la pere Plumier et qu'on pretend n'avoir jamais eté gravéz". The plates were designed by Devermont and engraved by Chedel. The frontispiece depicts Cybele with a mural crown, holding an ammonite and a coral, and with crystals and stalagmites at her feet. Light shelfwear, otherwise a very good copy; text and plates clean, with strong impressions. Ward and Carozzi 660; not in Nissen. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

ROTH, Johann Michaël.
KVK & WorldCat (2 copies, 1 lacking the Augsburg parts and the other more seriously incomplete). An extremely rare and stunning display of the vibrant graphic and topographic trade in mid-18th-century Augsburg, the main part devoted primarily to the earthquake and tsunami that desolated Lisbon and many other cities in Portugual, southwest Spain and northwest Africa on 1 November 1755. It brings together maps, plans, prospects, bird's-eye views and other views from most of the leading Augsburg print publishers of the day, bringing the destruction into sharp graphic focus, with many views, often including before and after pictures, of Lisbon, Meknes (Mequines) and Fez in Morocco. Several views show looters or others who tried to exploit the chaos hanging at the gallows. The collection goes beyond a mere record of the earthquake and tsunami, however, providing an excellent overview of Portuguese and Spanish topography in general, with many city views, plans and fortification plans. The title-page notes that the publisher can supply copies already bound ("gebunden zu bekommen"). But it also seems likely that the present copy was supplied by the publisher in its wrapper made of so-called gold brocade paper. Augsburg raised the production of this kind of decorated paper to an art in the mid-18th-century, and the present example (two whole sheets, for the front and back wrapper, printed from the same block) is a fine specimen. In very good condition, with only the spine of the wrapper somewhat tattered.
