[LEPRINCE DE BEAUMONT (Mme)]
Mylne, "The Bibliographer's Last Resort : Reading the Text", 18th-c. Fiction, vol.5, n.1, oct.
Chez Briffaut, Vienna, Austria 1755 - In French. For sale here are the first three volumes (Tome Premier, Tome Second, et Tome Troisieme) of a five volume set. The interiors are in remarkably excellent condition. All three volumes are rated Very Good. Beginning with Tome Premier, as you can see from the photographs the leather covers are in pretty decent condition. There is a loss of the maroon label that would have read Tome I. There is also a crack between the front cover and the spine and between the back cover and the spine. However, there is absolutely no looseness in either case. No give. Nothing. I don't know whether the covers were at one point detached and were re-glued. It's certainly possible, though I don't see any glue. In any event, the binding of the covers is very solid. The binding of the pages is exceptional. They are tight. There aren't any cracks or spaces anywhere. The inside covers and end papers are a very appealing dark blue marbled design. On the front inside cover there are a couple of small scrapings of the paper and you can see the boards beneath the design. There is also a very small bookplate of a Chauncey I. Clark. The same bookplate is in all three volumes. There is a tiny hole on the second blank end paper. There is a frontispiece which is in perfect condition. This is also the case with the title page, it looks excellent. And, wow, are these pages in terrific condition. Scrolling through, I'm not seeing any soiling, not seeing any significant creasing or dogeared corners. And no foxing. There is a blue ribbon. And there are two foldout maps … [Click Below for Full Description]

Parkinson, James
Second edition of this chemical handbook designed in part for students and amateur chemists. A fresh and wide-margined copy. The text provides an introduction to chemistry and its tools and vocabulary, and describes the appearance, uses, chemical affinities and reactions of a large number of substances including minerals, salts, elements, and substances produced by plants and animals. The elegantly engraved frontispiece depicts "The Economical Laboratory of Guyton", which features an alembic suspended over an oil burner, and also includes a chart of chemical symbols. Published at a time when chemistry was still in the process of becoming a modern and professionalised science, this volume provides an excellent overview of the basic chemical knowledge of the period. The author, surgeon James Parkinson (1755-1824), is best remembered for having identified the "Shaking Palsy" as a specific degenerative disease of the nervous system. He also studied fossils and geology, arguing in Organic Remains of a Former World (published in three volumes between 1804 and 1811) that fossils were the remains of living things that had been destroyed and then deposited in new locations by the flood, as well as that the Earth was in a constant state of transformation. Of particular interest in this edition of the Chemical Pocket-Book is the ad at the rear in which Parkinson, "being engaged in researches respecting Extraneous Fossils", asks that members of the public contact him with information about any fossils they may have found. "Instructive specimens are frequently lost, from their nature not … [Click Below for Full Description]

HERBERT (Jean-Jacques]

Prijs: ?975,- (incl. lijst).

SHORT, Richard; J. Mynde [engraver].
London Circa, 1755. Pair of copper engraved plates (each 58 x 73.5 cm), uncoloured, mounted on cardboard. Published as part of a larger series that celebrated British naval victories. These depict the capture of the famous Spanish vessel the "Glorioso". Very scarce. Richard Short (?-1702) was a naval officer and topographical draughtsman in the GB Royal Navy. Nothing is known of his naval career except the vessels in which he served: Baltimore (a sloop), Peregrine (a sloop built in 1749), Mermaid (a frigate, which he appears to have left before she sailed for Nova Scotia in 1754), Gibraltar (a frigate), and four ships of the line, Leopard (built in 1756), Prince of Orange, Dublin (which returned from the West Indies in 1763), and Neptune. After this service at sea he was appointed to the Chatham dockyard, England. In the pre-photography era drawing lessons formed a regular part of the training of officers. Short is known to be one of the first English military artists to record Canadian views during the period when British forces were stationed in Canada, which were engraved by various hands after his sketches. He is also known for views of naval engagements, engraved as a series by Caroline Watson and published by Boydell in London. J. Mynde (spelled here without the 'e') was a British engraver, active from 1740 to 1770. He worked mainly for booksellers producing plates of landscapes, portraits and anatomical subjects which he is best known for. He's portraits of Roger Earl of Orrery and William Harris, Doctor in Divinity rank as his principal.

An excellent example of the rare editio princeps of Roger Boscovich & Christopher Maire’s account of their important mission to measure the length of a degree of the meridian arc in Central Italy, featuring the first scientifically surveyed map of the Papal States. - This is an especially fine example of the very rare first edition of Roger Boscovich and Christopher Maire’s De Litteraria Expeditione, which provides a critically important piece of evidence supporting the prevailing theory as to the shape of the earth, in addition to featuring the first scientifically accurate general map of the Papal States. At the behest of Pope Benedict XIV, from 1750 to 1753, the esteemed Croatian polymath Roger Boscovich teamed up with the English Jesuit Christopher Maire to measure two degrees of a meridian arc between Rome and Rimini. Through their resulting calculations, they verified that the length of a degree of longitude progressively increases as one moves … [Click Below for Full Description]
