Lacombe (cat.), 3165. - Von Schlosser, p. 494.

Engraved arms on title, an engraved headpiece depicting the Zwinger, & two engraved folding plates. 1 p.l., 101, [1] pp. Large 4to, cont. mottled & polished sheep (minor browning), spine gilt, leather lettering piece on spine. Dresden & Leipzig: G.C. Walther, 1755. First edition, and a fine large paper copy, of the "first separate catalogue of the Dresden natural history collections housed in the magnificent baroque Zwinger (built by Poeppelmann in 1711), which also accommodated the Dresden print cabinet. This catalogue is one of the fruits of Augustus the Strong's reorganisation of the old Dresden Wunderkammer into a number of specialised collections. The collection of ancient marbles was similarly catalogued in 1733, and the prehistoric and mineralogical collections in 1749; other departments of the museum followed in the nineteenth century… "Fossils and petrifactions, animal skeletons and specimens, corals and shells were all represented in profusion, but oddities and natural curiosities still abound in the form of 'Missgeburten', peculiarly shaped plants, and two pieces of gold and silver supposedly transmuted from copper and lead by Johann Friedrich Boettger, better known for his rediscovery of the art of making porcelain. The final chapter is devoted to a model of Solomon's temple, constructed over a period of twenty years from Biblical references by a Hamburg gentleman named Schott. The model had been admired by Peter the Great and exhibited in London where a pamphlet about it was issued in 1725. The folding plates give ground-plans of the Zwinger."-G … [Click Below for Full Description]

Éon de Beaumont, Charles de, French diplomat, spy, soldier and Freemason (1728-1810)
Tonnerre, d. d. ? S. Large 8vo. Receipt for household expenses for "Mlle. D?Éon", here "pour poisson". - Éon de Beaumont was a French transsexual political adventurer, secret agent of Louis XV in Russia (1755), then minister to England. The term "eonism" denoting the tendency to adopt the costume and manners of the opposite sex, is derived from his name. Despite d'Éon's wearing a dragoon's uniform all the time, there were rumors that he was actually a woman, and a betting pool was started on the London Stock Exchange about his true sex. D'Éon finally claimed to be physically not a man, but a woman, and demanded recognition by the government as such. King Louis XVI and his court complied, but demanded that d'Éon dress appropriately and wear women's clothing. D'Éon agreed, especially when the king granted him funds for a new wardrobe. Overall, Charles d?Éon spent his first 49 years as a man, and his last 33 years as a woman. Upon death, a council of physicians discovered that d'Éon's body was anatomically male. - Lower margin with tiny paper defect.

[No place or date; Paris:] De l'Imprimerie de Gissey. FIRST EDITION of the first book on podiatry or surgery of the foot as an independent speciality, and extraordinarily rare. G&M 9190: "Because of the non-standard title page without mention of place, publisher or date, the pamphlet seems to have been intended to have been given away by the author." In his introductory remarks Rousselot argues for an independent surgical approach to diseases of the feet, which he says is an entirely neglected aspect of surgery currently in the hands of untrained women and maladroit charlatans. He argues for it to be raised to the status of dentists and hernia surgeons. After this important and committed preface, Rousselot gives medical descriptions of the different corns and their surgical treatments. "He wrote three books, Mémoire sur les cors des pieds, 1755 (no copy of this book has ever been traced) and further books in 1762 [Nouvelles observations, ou méthode certaine sur le traitement des cors, 45 pages, G&M 4302.1] and 1769 [Toilette des Pieds]. His contribution was not a great one as he was too much influenced by Turner, but his remedies show common sense" (J.C. Dagnall, "The history of chiropodial literature", in The Chiropodist, 1965). As J.C. Dagnall wrote in 1965, no copy of this book was then known, and he himself constantly sought for a copy, but in vain. Since then and with improved knowledge of library holdings three copies have come to light, at the Bibliothèque Nationale de France, Harvard and Erfurt. The present copy is the only one known to have appeared for sale.12m … [Click Below for Full Description]

It was translated and revised by Abraham Gotthelf Kästner (1719-1800), professor of mathematics at Leipzig, later of mathematics and physics at Göttingen, teacher of Lessing and Lichtenberg, friend of Gottsched. Smith's work "became probably the most influential optical textbook of the eighteenth century. It was also published in Dutch in 1753, in German in 1755, and in two different French translations in 1767" (DSB). The work consists of two books, a general text on light, reflection, the eye, colors etc.; and a second book divided into three parts: analytical catoptrics, analytical dioptrics, and the manufacturing of optical instruments; the remaining texts are Kästner's own contributions. - Light browning throughout, otherwise a good, wide-margined copy. - Poggendorff I, 1219; DSB XII, 477 (Smith) and VII, 206 (Kästner). 1755. 8vo. 12 vols. With 72 engr. maps. Contemp. French full calf with giltstamped labels and gilt spines. All edges red; marbled endpapers. A fine copy of the twelve-volume octavo edition of the most detailed and accurate geography of its day (published simultaneously in four quarto volumes). All the maps are taken from the "Atlas Portatif" (1748-49) of Robert de Vaugondy. The fine map of the Arabian Peninsula is derived, via Vaugondy, from Delisle; "it includes the three classic divisions of the Arabian Peninsula and the following regional subdivisions: Tahama in the south west, Bahrain, which extends along the east coast and includes the town of Cathema, Yemen in the south which includes Oman, the States of the Cherif of Mecca which includes Hagiaz and parts of the centre of the Arabian Peninsula. Although the width of the Red Sea is exaggerated, the Sinai peninsula's shape is very close to reality. The topographical features and watercourses are not very different to how they are shown on other maps of the same period. A town named Naged is shown to the north west of the town of Janama" (Al Ankary). - Some bindings slightly bumped at extremeties. Contemporary ms. ownership "Leon. van Berg" to pastedowns; titles bear stamp of the La Valsainte Charterhouse, Switzerland (dissolved in 1825). Slightly browned.
